I have driven by this local spot countless times since moving into the area over 12 years ago - what took me so long to come in?! An unassuming exterior gives way to a come-as-you-are, all-are-welcome spot that I feel is a great cross-section of what it means to be a community in Houston. Friendly owner and patrons (clearly lots of regulars, which is really cool), unpretentious decor, and a solid menu that anyone should be able to find something to enjoy. Order at the counter and they will bring your meal out to you; I had their Grilled Chicken Club with a side of fries and drink, and all in with tip it was under $20 which is typical these days. Food was prepped fresh so it arrived piping hot, I really enjoyed it all (especially those fries - perfect crispy crinkle cuts with amazing seasoning). Kojak's has been in the area since the 70s. They serve a mix of American and Mediterranean cuisine. I was first introduced to this place after I got hired from my company and got to eat lunch with the other managers and directors. It's nice cause now it's a tradition I do with our new hires after a day of orientation. I've tried a few dishes, but I gravitate toward their avocado BLT on french bread. The bread is nicely toasted and still soft inside. There's plenty of bacon and avocado. Their crinkle fries are good, but it's the seasoning they use that adds a nice touch. You can ask for extra seasoning on the side. Other people have ordered soups, the gyro plate, and something homey like meatloaf. One of my coworkers is vegetarian, so it's nice that they have a falafel sandwich and other options. Many people seem to go here for lunch in between their work day. There's enough tables and chairs and some booth seats. Sometimes they are out of a certain type of soda or the ice machine is broken, but they do keep a bucket of ice or let you pick a canned soda of what's out. read more

Being from the East Coast you get the need for a good bagel sometimes... today was one of those days. My friend and I ordered bagel sandwiches. I'm glad that Brazos bagel has set up shop in Kojak's. Kojak's offers sandwiches with everything from chicken to lox. (Wednesday through Sunday only). Overall the service was okay. Nothing special. The girl was more concerned with her slicing items than originally serving us. I was semi bummed that they only offered the everything or plain as choices for the sandwiches. Just WOW! The freshly baked bagel by Brazos Bagels was the perfect base for the scrumptious vegetable sandwich. Can't remember the exact name of the plate but the sandwich had a delectable pesto sauce and cream cheese paired with fresh and crisp tomato, spinach, purple onion, and avocado. I will be back just for that! Went nicely with a glass of rosé. The sausage, egg, cheese, potato & biscuit gravy bowl was so delicious as well especially if you're craving a hearty southern style breakfast/brunch. What to do to fight cabin fever? Write a review or two on Yelp. When I visit a city I've never visited or have only visited a few times, such as H-town, I make sure to find the storied eateries, either chains or stand-alones, Italian food, Greek food, and possibly a type of cuisine the area is famous for, providing it's not spicy. As for filling the hatch with Greek food at a reasonable price, Kojak's fits the bill. It's called Kojak's Fine Foods because they appear to have items sitting on shelves the way they'd be displayed at an ethnic grocery store ... and they also cater. Neither of those two options were relevant to my needs as someone passing through town. However, their sit down cafe' was definitely relevant to me. I got myself a platter and sampled their gyro meat, hummus, and some stuffed grape leaves. It was all very good but I remember that the stuffed grape leaves really stood out. I could have eaten many more of them. At the end, I ate some baklava that was placed in a plastic clam shell. It was also good. They also have soft drinks and bottled drinks you can buy. For a quick meal during the lunch hour, you can go up to the counter and put your food on a tray. The prices were fair and, as others have said, the service was more perfunctory than friendly. I didn't care because it was obviously a busy time and they had to be efficient. I also liked the simple and open set-up of Kojak's eating area. You just help yourself to a four top, plant your food and your behind down, enjoy your meal, and take a respite from the L.A.-like hustle and bustle of H-town inside their air conditioned locale. Something about Kojak's struck me as funny. You are still inside the Inner Loop, although barely, but the area doesn't feel that much different than if it was on or near the Outer Loop. It's near a big freeway interchange on Houston's NW side. Once inside, there were a lot of suburban office park employees lunching and it was a little bit of a time warp, with some - not many - of the guys looking like they might have had a beeper and some of the gals sporting feathered hair! Regardless, the patrons seemed like a friendly, relaxed bunch. And, I couldn't finish a review without mentioning that Kojak's has free parking in front of their store in this strip mall where you might be jockeying for a space among people's trucks, muscle cars, and big SUVs down in the Republic of Texas. read more

Beware. Kojak''s now adds a 4% fee when using a credit card to pay. This fee is NOT mentioned on their website & is levied in a nontransparent manner. There is NO line item on the receipt that says credit card fee. Instead, a second menu pricing system is used. For example, a Gyro plate which lists on the menu @ $14.00 shows on a credit card receipt as $14.56. NO explanation for the price difference on the receipt. The only way to pick up on this is to compare menu prices with the receipt. Totally underhanded & sneaky. read more

Located in a strip mall, this restaurant is really nothing special and I wouldn't go back. There is plenty of parking (because the place is empty). The staff is nice and the restaurant is clean and large. But, why do you go to a restaurant? For the food. Well, the grilled chicken club was lacking in flavor. The chicken was rectangular chunks of flavorless protein. I ate the sandwich because I was hungry and it provided protein and food that I needed, but I certainly didn't 'enjoy' it. My husband had the chicken Parmesan. The dish had no marinara sauce on it. Isn't that kind of standard. As you can see from my photo, it's a breaded cutlet of chicken accompanied by some mediocre veggies. The chicken was lacking the marinara, but it also had a measly tiny bit of cheese on it. It was really quite sad. Also, if you are eating in or taking it to go, all drinks are in styrofoam cups. If they serve food on ceramic dishes, they must be able to wash glasses to. It's lazy and a waste to have disposable cups. Don't waste your time here, there are plenty of decent places in the area. read more

Really good what I would deem "plate specials." Salmon picatta, chicken enchiladas, meatloaf all on point. In particular with the first two, the sauces are unusually good. Vegetable quiche as well is a standout. Have been going here since the late 90s, through all of their restaurant layout iterations. They really try to introduce new things - from dinner to live music - to patrons. Owner is typically onsite and working like a dog. Worth a try, folks! read more

Real reason for the 2 rather than 3 star rating: super duper annoying your meal is ready buzzers. Look and sound like they were bought at the 99 cent only store. You been to a place where you weren't really sure what they were known for serving? This is just one of those places. It's in a strip center and seems to have been here for a long time and was decently crowded so they are doing something right. And that something just might be price and location. It's a bit confusing, they have a menu on the wall, the have printed daily specials, and a separate burger/sandwich menu in print format at the register. You order at the front and get a buzzer to come pick up your food. I was lucky and got the Mama's meatloaf which was the special for the day. The meatloaf itself was pretty good and a big serving. The mashed potatoes were solid too, the veggies seemed like reheated canned/frozen. My friend had the gyro sandwich and it was awful. The fries were not that outstanding either. Their sweet tea was not sweet at all, but they do serve Katz coffee/tea. I wouldn't come back, and from yelp reviews the food is all over the place too. I guess over time you find that one dish that keeps bringing you back, to me it's not worth a 2nd try. They do offer FREE wifi and there is a back room that seems to have more business people sitting there for extended periods of time doing work. read more

I ordered a Tuna melt along with fries. I wasn't expecting potato wedges though but they were cooked to my liking. Not too soggy with oil but not too crispy either. The tuna melt was alright but thought it could've used another slice of cheese. I'll probably be back just to try out the Chicken Parmesan. Hidden near the Heights is a small deli. They have quite a selection consisting of burgers, salads, Antone knock off sandwiches, etc. I've eaten here a few times and everything is pretty consistent. This time I had their version of Super Original which tasted pretty good, if I had a critique it would be that they need to make sure the pickles aren't sopping with its brine on the sandwich as I got a pungent taste of pickle a few bites, easily remedied by just not getting pickles.
