Seconding dog friendly and CHEAP. And you get what you pay for. I've stayed here a few times with friends over the years if we are too lazy to camp in the nearby state parks. What do you get? Very basic motel room, with no air conditioning (fans are provided) and basic kitchen and bathroom amenities. It was great to have a full kitchen though, plus an outdoor BBQ - we brought a ton of food and drinks with us and we ate very, very well. Why bother? It's CHEAP and located in a beautiful stretch of road by the Yuba River. Just walk across the street to soak in the river to cool off or to try some fly fishing. About 15 minutes away by car is the cute little town of Downieville, a mecca for outdoor sports. This was a great alternative for a quick, CHEAP getaway - no crowds, no noise, just you and your two and four-legged friends out in nature. The owners/managers are a hoot - they'll gab til the cows come home, but are actually very nice and do as much as they can to make you feel comfy. read more

Dog friendly. Cheap. Easy walk to the Yuba River. In Loganville on leased Forest Service Land. Small rooms. Funky and classic way-side stop. The old Bank AmeriCard sign out front says just how long this place has been going since the last remodel- 1969? But that's what makes it so unique. Plenty of parking. Our host was a real 'clamper'- gold miner that is- knew the gold miner language and life style almost too well...talked our ear off. But he made sure we were all situated and gave us some tips on how to get to the swimmin hole by the river. Don't get any ideas about being a claim jumper though! the river is fully staked in these here parts. This is for those that like the highway 49 historic feeling and a way to know the real thing. Kokanee is a type of salmon species common to Lake Tahoe and the Truckee River. The person who named the place must have been trying to lure fisherman. Oh, and the Forest around Kokanee Kabins is big and beautiful and heavenly. Bring your favorite drinks and a camera and call Kokanee Kabins home for a weekend. If you're not into funky best to go up the road to Butte's Inn or High Country Inn. read more

Jeff and Lisa are the special new owners. They are very accommodating and their cabins are updated, very clean and have kitchen facilities. If you fly fish you can walk across the street and find some delightful holes to fish as well as to swim if that's your desire. This is close to Sierra City and Downieville (both charming towns). There's hiking, biking, fishing, swimming, restaurants, etc. in the area. There's a sweet lawn area for picnicking adjacent to the rooms. I love this place! They are dog friendly, open arms type people. I love the little Kabins, they are homey, and warm when its cold outside! Lisa and Jeff are just the sweetest people ever, and always make us feel welcome! Be sure to sign the guest book, as it provides memories, and a story of the kabins! Please do not go here though, if you are expecting a 5 star resort, at 2 star prices! Naturally there might be a human hair in the room, but if you want to relax and step away, this little place will meet your needs. This place is a toilet. The barely conscience, shirtless manager showed us a flea infested room which overpowered us with the unmistakable smell of a gas leak. Dog hair on the the sheets, urine specimen jar on the counter, flith covering everything. Your $70 is better spent on a tent or on a ticket from the sherriff for sleeping in your car. read more

Stayed here one night on a whim with my sister. We were in the area needed a place to stay. I looked up local places and this place sounded cute and was reasonably priced. When we arrived it was completely different than we expected...4 tiny rooms in the middle of nowhere. The owner, was nice and very accommodating. The rooms were VERY basic but did have a small kitchen with refrigerator and a stove and the bathroom had hot water and a shower. There is no television and we had no cell phone reception (through verizon). The owners provide a bear horn for each of the rooms in the event that a bear comes uninvited, which made us a little apprehensive but was good to have. Although old and very basic, the room was cute and personable. This is one step up from tent-camping, but did the job for us. Not for anyone who is picky or high maintenance. read more

Jeff the owner is amazing and might have saved our lives, at least saved us from spending a snowy night sleeping in the back of our car in the middle of this horrible snow storm. Yesterday afternoon my girlfriend and me were trying to get back to the bay area from Tahoe and all roads were closed due to a horrible blizzard, we decided to try driving 70 to 49 because it was the only road that wasn't closed. After dredging through horrible snow any not even being able to see the road we made our way over the peak of the mountain and headed down past Sierraville only to be headed off by a landslide blocking the road. Conditions were so bad there was no way we were going back over 49 and we just happened to see Jeff in town, he said he had a cabin and would let us stay for the night. Jeff let us right in no questions asked, gave us the WIFI password and was happy to hear that I was a mutual rock and roll fan. He turned the heater on for us and gave us a flashlight in case the power went out. He was so incredibly hospitable. We had a great night in the cabin, a queen size bed was the perfect size for the two of us and the little stove allowed us to cook some leftovers we had in our cooler. By morning time the snow had cleared and we saw him heading back up the mountain from Downieville, he let us know the road conditions and told us to have a safe trip. We will most definitely be coming back to stay, although I don't think we will ever drive through here in the winter again.. We'll find a nice spring day to come visit again. What a great place to get away for some R&R in the Sierra mountains!! We spent Memorial Weekend at these adorable throw back cabins from the 1940-50s era. A true get away - no TV, no cell phone service - just pure freedom from the hustle and bustle. The four (4) cabins are very quaint, charming and centrally located for driving to numerous hiking locations. Each unit has a kitchenette with stove/oven, microwave/coffee maker, toaster....easily sleeps two comfortably - all the amenities one would need - just like at home. The cabins are situated across the street from the river - it was SO peaceful and serene - we couldn't have asked for more. The owners are very accommodating and down to earth. We will definitely be back! It was a memorable weekend! read more

The Kokanee Kabins have been under new management for almost two years...and the cabins are much improved from the descriptions of prior Yelp reviews! Our cabin was very clean, comfortable beds, well-stocked kitchenette. The new owners have painted the outside of the buildings, and will be updating the interiors this year. We stayed here one night every place else in the area would not let us stay only one night. It was ok. The towels were soft and the shower hot. The bed just ok. Very tiny - floor clean, but there were other areas that could have been cleaner. Wood around the sink looked dirty - I thought maybe it's just old - wiped it and dirt came off. It's on old cabin, so don't stay if you are really picky. I wouldn't mind going back, but if something else was available I would try that. The price seemed good for the area. read more

This place is a gem. This is the second time I stayed here, the first was last year around this time and then I just stayed here last weekend. The owners Jeff and Lisa have been consistently kind and respectful. They are authentic real people who offer a wonderful place to stay while in this magical forest. They offer privacy while at the same time being available if you need anything. The cabins are modest and super clean and had all we needed, a small stocked kitchenette, bed, bath. They're located are right off Highway 49 and about a 10 minute walk directly across the street you'll find the Yuba River in all it's beauty. The river is so glorious right now we could hear it from the cabin. About a 30 minute drive and you'll find Sardine Lake which is wondrous. Oh and they allow dogs too! Super bonus as I brought both my dogs and gosh Lisa even remembered their names. Kokanee gifted me and my sweetheart and our dogs a beautiful respite to recharge, can't wait to go back!! read more

Two years ago My wife and my first stay at kokanee was the same weekend the proprietors Jeff and Lisa arrived and were moving in to operate the motel. Another couple arrived later that afternoon and got a room and later joined us sitting in chairs in lawn in front of the cottages. Jeff and Lisa came down and joined in too. None of us knew each other but it was so relaxing and comfortable we quickly became acquainted and partied the afternoon and late into the night sharing food and drink. We had one of better times of our lives. My wife and I just came back from another great weekend at Kokanee where we had the place to ourselves. Jeff and Lisa joined us the evening on the lawn and we had another great time as good friends. Kokanee Kabins are a throwback to the 1950's. Its a 4-room motel with one detached cabin nestled in the forest. It has a large lawn common area with BBQ and picnic tables and lawn chairs where our dog hangs out with us. The wood paneled rooms have a kitchenette and small bathroom for the wayward travelers and fishermen. It has heat but no airconditioning. There are fans in the room with large windows and screen porch doors for circulation when its warm. Jeff and Lisa have been doing upgrades to the motel. It is freshly painted inside and out. Dog friendly. Much Cheaper than staying up the road in Sierra City. Easy walk to the Yuba River. Joe Bob says check it out for that quick weekend get away and a pleasant alternative to the higher priced hotels and B&B's. read more
