This was my favorite place I have ever stayed. It was my fiancés birthday, and our last chance to escape Reno for a mini vacation before we get married. I booked us a trip to go hiking and stay at buttes resort on a whim and a quick Google search. I am SO happy we stayed here. Pulling up, we met with Jim the owner who was super nice and got us set up in our cabin, lucky number 5. It was sooooo cute. The grounds are kept very nice and there is a beautiful overlook in the back. The cabins have little patios and common areas to hangout with the other guests. They have an office that has free movies to borrow, board games, Menus for the restaurants and more. Walking into our cabin we were totally in awe. It was so homey and we were instantly comfortable. The cabin is decorated really well and has everything you can possibly need including a kitchen, utensils, plates and cups, hot coffee, a microwave, a fridge, and more. Our bed was really comfortable, the temperature was easily changed, we didn't notice any outside noise and we just had an absolutely amazing time. I can't wait to come back. read more

This was our first time staying here and it was such a beautiful, peaceful retreat. Our stay was magical; surrounded by the tall pines and sounds of the Yuba river. We stayed in cabin 4 with beautiful balcony overlooking the river and snowy mountains. The room was clean and cozy with all the amenities one would need. The shower was also hot and great water pressure. I had talked to Jim on the phone and he was very sweet and helpful. Rosa was also great help in advising things to do and places to eat. Overall, we had a very special time for our weekend getaway and will definitely be coming back! Thank you for a beautiful experience! read more

We enjoyed our stay. Comfortable enough. Decent value. HOWEVER, be aware that the property map on the website is inaccurate. Be warned that you may not get what you think based on the map. We thought our cabin was at least facing toward the river with an opening between two other buildings (not expecting a view of the river but at least facing in that direction). Instead, our cabin was facing the parking lot, directly adjacent to the parking lot, and sandwiched between two other cabins. There were two other buildings between our cabin and the river. Very different than what the property map displays. We would not have rented that cabin if we were aware of the actual location. read more

If I could give negative stars I definitely would! The photos and map depictions on their website are not an accurate representation of the actual "resort" I would not call it that! It is run down with lots deteriorating wood decks and railings. Our back door barely shut and wouldn't lock. Shower pressure was minimal and we had lukewarm showers. Parking is very tight, I don't think there was even enough for each unit to have a spot. The owner followed us around and was creeping all of us out. Felt like a horror movie. Don't travel with service dogs as this manager will "fine" you for dog hair as he considers it "unreasonable"! We had intended on staying two nights even payed in advance but could only stand to be there one night! read more

Amazing place. After coming off of the PCT that morning, we were greeted by the owners of this place. The town had lost power and they offered a warm place to sit and get out of the rain. They offered their generator to charge our phones. After a last second cancellation, they got us in to the most cozy room, complete with a kitchen and fireplace. We spent the rainy afternoon watching movies and staying dry. Very clean. I would absolutely recommend this place to everyone. read more

Sierra city is a very family oriented and friendly town. It is a town of people who come together for each other. Tonight the whole town came together to raise money for a Camp fire victim by having a spaghetti dinner and auction. It seemed as if the whole town was there and everyone was doing something to support the event. This is the kind of town I'd like to eventually find to live in. The cabin we are staying in at Buttes Resort is roomy, rustic yet clean and cozy. It overlooks the river and will probably have a beautiful view when the sun comes up. read more

This was the second time I'd stayed at the Buttes Resort and both times were excellent. The resort is in the middle of town, with some of the cabins having river views from their balconies. It has a wonderful Swiss Chalet feel, and the cabins are comfortable, excellently stocked and meticulously clean, definitely the best value and highest quality in the area. The weather was cool, and Jim had the room prewarmed with the fireplace going when I arrived; which was very appreciated! We have made this trip a tradition for a number of years and have never been disappointed with the cozy cabins, the view from the deck, and the proximity to quaint restaurants, walks, and the beauties of Sierra Buttes. Great escape from the city life! Quite, clean and in a location with endless adventure opportunities. My girlfriend and I stayed for 2 nights around Valentines Day 2018 and had an awesome experience. We stayed in Cabin 7 which had a private deck and bbq, new comfy bed and was very clean. The fireplace came in handy as well. Cabins 4, 7 and 9 were our favorites since they were more private and each have a private deck. And at just over $100, you cant beat the price. The operator Jim was very hospitable and knowledgeable about Sierra City and was able to give good suggestions on what to do in the area. We enjoyed hiking to the Sardine Lakes, breakfast at the Red Moose (excellent) and dinner at the Buckhorn across the street (great appetizers and drinks). We had such a great time we are headed back this weekend!! read more

Love, love this place. The cabins are so cute and comfy. The host is great as well. The only drawback is, pets are not allowed so I had to take my baby aka mini doxie with me elsewhere when we're in Sierra City. I wished the host will consider pets. Nevertheless, I'd still highly recommend this gem. read more

I have stayed here for years with a group that comes from all over the country. We spend a couple days here each year in late August. This year was no different. Mike and Lindy are the perfect hosts. The rooms are clean and well appointed, the outside patio is inviting for large groups to get together and share stories as we like to do. They have a couple of honeymoon suites. I don't know the room number of one, but the other is 9. Very nice rooms with fantastic views of the Yuba River in the canyon. If I am within a 50 mile radius and I need a place to stay, it will always be the Buttes. read more

Wanted to go to a small town with a quiet place to stay. Did i mention on MEMORIAL WEEKEND. Crazy right, no such thing. Yes if you go to Sierra City you can find the best place ever. Buttes Resort. We booked two cabins. Perfect weather. We lounged around and had wine on their great deck. It was such a clean place to stay. Prices are perfect. Not to mention the owners Mike and Lindy. Those two are fantastic. They have a beautiful common deck that over looks the Yuba River. They have a public bbq for their guest. So if you drive by and wanting to check out the place, ring the bell first. Mike and Lindy take CARE of their guest. Privacy is a priority for their guest. WHICH I TOTALLY appreciate. We returned again in late Sept. weather was alot different. RAINY. We had a very quiet weekend. It was perfect. We will be going back in 2015. My friends and I got caught behind a huge March snowstorm on the 49 attempting to get home. We pulled in here once we realized it was getting bad and we didn't have the right chains. A gentleman, whom we assumed owned the place, but at least ran it (Jim or Mike?) gave us a two room cabin for a very decent price. The cabin was spacious and comfortable. He even called the grocer in town to see if he was open for us to buy food (since the restaurant in town was closed). By the grace of God, we had food already. We stayed in the rooms, cooked food, staying warm and comfortable all night. The next morning, the same man plowed behind our car and gave us advice on how to get back to Reno. It was such a kind and wonderful atmosphere. We really loved it and hope to return to the cabins in summer! :) read more

We had a clean, light and airy room for four nights in August. The deck and bbq added to our enjoyment as well as the sound of the North Yuba passing by below. We were supposed to have a Sierra County wedding that weekend, but, of course that was shut down by Covid. Jim handled the early reservations in January smoothly and later the cancellations. We didn't want to miss any time in the mountains and kept our reservation. It is hard to be an innkeeper right now, so many added regulations . We were grateful for the amenities of the resort, for access to the river and the amazing Lakes Basin and for the grit of the business folks in Sierra County. read more

My husband I were enjoying the day wandering around Sierra City before returning home. We had always wanted to stay at this resort. After going by the office and seeing there was no one there, I walked over by the deck to look at the premises. At that point I was approached by a very hostile owner who told me to stay off the deck (hadn't even walked on it) and that it was for private guests only. He said it in such a threatening manner I thought he was going to physically threaten me or call the cops. I responded saying I was just checking the place out to see if we might want to stay there, but I mumbled, not now! I have never had an encounter like that in all my years of traveling throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Europe. I will also note that we have also been staying in that area for over 20 years in the lodges nearby and motels, so it's not like we are unfamiliar with the area or people. Obviously I am not the only person this man has verbally attacked in the past. I just read a review from a visitor (on Tripadvisor.com) who had the very same response. I would say, this person needs to get out of the business if he is that aggressive and angry with potential customers. This is no way to address people who are only looking to potentially stay at his premises. read more

We wanted a quiet place near the Yuba river so I could re-acquaint myself with my fly rod. Found this place on the internet. Looks nice. Lots of pics. Called the owners up and reserved one of the smaller cabins. Arrived at 6:30 Friday night. Mike and Lindy greeted us and made us feel at home right away. Walked across the street and had a very nice meal at the Buckhorn. Beautiful outdoor garden setting. Cabin was very clean, very nice, and quite comfy. Slept like a baby. We stayed 2 nights, found great places to fish and we will be back. read more

Very nice people. Really enjoyed the privacy, quiet... Clean rooms, soft sheets.... We bbq our own lunch, cooked breakfast in our cabin, so nice not having to leave to eat. Stayed 2 nights. we also like the Rustic Cottages in Tahoe, I think this place (BR)was better. played pool, "rented" movies, close to river where we went fishing. Wonderful mountain getaway! The Buttes Resort has separate cabins right in town, walking distance to restaurants and bars. Our cabin had a balcony overlooking the Yuba River -- great to listen to the sound of the roaring river with the spring snow melt. In the other direction we could see the majestic Sierra Buttes. Rooms are very clean, beds were great, nice linens. Great "mountain cabin" decor with lots of wood. Didn't get a chance to use the kitchenette but will plan to next trip! Wonderful cozy gas fireplace. They had a computer for guests in the common room and a wide selection of DVDs if wanted to take one back to the room. Mike and Lindy's Buttes Resort is by far the best place to stay in the region. The cabins overlook the Yuba River. Each cabin is beautifully appointed and extremely clean. There is a reading library, pool table, darts and a computer available. The resort is in the middle of town and close to everything. My husband and I are reoccurring visitors here. The place is amazingly private, secure, and clean considering it's right off the main road. the owners make every effort to keep it that way! Having spent most our time there on the private deck we really appreciate that not everyone is allowed to wander in. The view really is amazing though! We met Mike and Lindy on our annual Jeep outing when staying across the street. Mike took it upon himself to act as our offroad tour guide one day even though we were not staying at the resort. Subsequent trips have included stays at the Buttes Resort, and have all been most enjoyable. The rooms are perfect, and Mike and Lindy are the most gracious hosts! The only bad thing is that the cabins fill up fast during the summer...book early! read more

Just got back from another great stay at the Buttes Resort. Stayed in cabin 2 this time. It had a small but fully stocked kitchen, and it was fun. The 4th of July is really quiet and away from all the congestion and noise of a big town. If you want to see billions of stars, this is a good place to do that. The owners are great and make sure you have privacy during your stay. My family has been coming here for years. You won't be disappointed! read more

This gem of a place is the ONLY place to stay if you are in the area surrounding Sierra City. The rooms are spotless and have kitchens that are fully stocked with all you need (if you want to cook your own meals.) Beautiful view from the deck, and an extensive collection of DVDs, books, games if you don't want to hike or bike in this beautiful area. Very quick ride to the trailhead to hike to the Sierra Buttes Fire lookout which is a great hike with amazing views. Enjoy! read more

This lodging is excellent -- partly because it is one of the few places I can stay without having to worry about dogs barking or otherwise being out of owner's control. Guests know the rules well in advance. Small companies like this resort must protect their property and their guests. It's great to have "human friendly" lodging rather than "pet friendly" lodging. read more

We were talking on the deck (dogs were not going indoors) and MIKE told us to LEAVE, dogs are not allowed. This is the best place to stay! Nicely decorated, VERY clean cabins overlooking the Yuba River. There's a TV, a DVD player in the room. The kitchens have a microwave, toaster, coffee pot, stove, oven, pots & pans, silverware, plates, glasses, (wine & otherwise), refrigerator. All you need to do is bring some food! If not, there are some restaurants within walking distance. There is a gas burning fireplace for comfort. If you need anything that's not in the room, just ask the owners.The owners are the best! It's quiet , peaceful and very beautiful. Well worth the drive. Oh, there's a gift shop, a pool table, games, books, movies, a gas grill. Or you can just sit on the deck and watch the river. A couple of weeks ago we had the pleasure of staying at the Buttes Resort which had changed hands since our last visit several years ago. What a great surprise. We stayed in cabin 1. It was spotlessly clean and perfectly decorated. It was impossible to find any fault with the resort. The grounds are lovely, the cabins have well-stocked kitchens; the owners Lindy and Mike are friendly hosts and take pride in their business. They live on-site and assure that your visit is just perfect. Some of the cabins have nice decks with views of the river in the canyon, there is a bigger deck for all guests to use, and a swimming hole down the path. If you have been gravely disappointed in the accommodations in this neck of the woods, try the Buttes Resort. You will not be disappointed. read more

Sierra City is like stepping back in time---truly a unique experience. We were only at Buttes one night but loved it-clean, tastefully done cabins and very friendly, helpful management. Great hiking and mountain biking (check out Downieville as well), and create your own nightlife! They have Wifi but no cell reception, which makes it even better. Definitely a find if you really want to get away without having to drive forever. read more

My husband and I have stayed here several times. We were somewhat on guard as we knew ownership had changed. However, we were pleasantly surprised. The new owner, Jim, is very friendly and accommodating. He loves the area and the resort and it shows! Already many upgrades, such as new bedding, etc. This resort has fantastic views of the Pacific Crest and the river. The cabins are unique, clean and comfy. Wow...what a gem way out in Sierra City. As many of these reviewers mentioned, Mike and Lindy (owners) put their heart into this property and it shows. Rooms and cabins are very nicely appointed, homey, and clean, clean, clean. The kitchenettes in the cabins are perfect for a little breakfast or lunch. They welcome guests like family. The added features like the deck overlooking the Yuba River are a joy and you'll find lots of little thoughtful extras like a pair of binoculars on the outdoor bar to view the river and the surrounding mountians. The activity room (office area) is filled with DVD's, books, a pool table, complimentary computer/internet (yeah...WITH a printer). The restaurant across the street does not disappoint either. Mike and Lindy are a wealth of information for activities and recommendations for areas activities and eats. I will be back! read more
