I've encountered him during a kids birthday party and a school fundraiser within the last three months and he's been rude from the start of every interaction. I got to try Kona Ice since they were one of the few food stands at the Honolulu AIDs Walk 2013. They technically weren't a stand though, they're a shave ice truck! Like a lot of shave ice places the ice was soft as snow. The syrups were way above average. Clean and bright is the only true description that pops into my head. They have some exotic flavors. I had tiger's blood which I forgot exactly what it was, but it was good! I added ice cream to my order which they did not charge me for. Not sure if that's standard. The ice cream was a delicious vanilla that I could tell was far above the average ice cream you typically get. As for the worker's they were very friendly and professional. The truck is absolutely adorable and hard not to spot since it's so colorful. The prices were a tad more pricier than most places, but the quality of the ingredients seem worth it. You can also opt to put ice cream inside! After ordering from the window, you'll get a plain Kona Ice because there's a self-serve syrup station on the outside of the truck. There were at least eight different real-fruit flavors to choose from. I choose to go with Watermelon and Lemon-Lime. The syrups look very concentrated, but they weren't too sweet and not watery at all. Just keep in mind that dispensing your own syrup will get a little messy. The syrups left my hands feeling really sticky afterwards. The price point for a snow cone-type treat was a little high. I believe it was around $6.00 for the largest size. It comes in multiple sizes so you can get a small one for a lower price and a big one for a larger price. The Kona Ice trucks are always so festive so there is usually sine tropical music on while the truck looks like it went through a festival for hula dancers. Some Kona Ice trucks have it to where you can choose one of their more popular flavors and put in the flavoring yourself, but if you want one of their more exotic flavors you can ask and they can get it for you. If you ask for an exotic flavor and they do not give you enough flavoring you can always go back and ask for more with no extra cost needed. My mother did the same from her number trying to get a response and still nothing. My husband tried as well and still nothing. My husband made one last attempt and texted him again and finally we got a response with a link. I went to the link, booked a time on her birthday for 1 o'clock, PAID and got a confirmation. When the birthday date and 1 o'clock came, no truck, no call!!! I texted them twice, my husband text them, we called numerous times and no responses. At 2:30 I texted one last time telling them how unhappy I was with their service and how I already paid and that this was unacceptable. FINALLY a reply saying o sorry it must have been a glitch they could come at 3:15 or give me my money back. I still had them come since all the kids had been waiting for 2 hours but I really wanted to cancel. We paid $4 for a "medium" shave ice that was served in a small cup and the ice was chunky and thick, much like the kind you'd make at home during small-kid time. The syrup was high-fructose corn syrup overload, with no real flavor at all, unless you count "red" or "purple" as a flavor.
