Had a great quick meal here before a Top Gun showing a few blocks away. Service was friendly. Food was delicious and the atmosphere was casual and easygoing, which struck me as very Thai. We went with our server's recommendation of the Catfish Gone Wild, which was delicious. She scared us a bit with a note about it being quite spicy. We had it toned down and asked for mild spice, though it came out not spicy at all, so might just try the standard preparation next time. Highly recommend!!! KOOK KAI'S THAI restaurant deserves 100+ stars review. Amazing food that is authentic, fresh, and delicious! I have eaten at many Thai restaurants including Bangkok, and the food here is top notch. We ordered the Catfish Gone Wild and the Crispy Duck Basil. WOW and WOW!! The catfish was so tender and flavorful with authentic spices including rhizomes and peppercorns with just the right amount of spiciness. The crispy duck was one of the best I have had anywhere. Perfectly crisp and tender slices of duck breast meat with crispy green beans(!) and bell peppers in a heavenly sauce that had perfect complex interplay of flavors (sweet, salty, spicy, touch of sour). After we ordered, both dishes arrived quickly to our table and were piping hot, served with steamed rice. I substituted brown rice. We also had a Thai iced coffee that was perfect... it was strong, not too sweet, tasted freshly brewed and it was a generous amount served in a large wine glass. We ate outdoors at a nice table with a patio umbrella. They have more tables inside and we saw many customers coming to pick up carryout, too. Plenty of parking: free parking along the street and also a public parking lot directly across the street. The service is wonderful. It was our first time visiting and the waiter was friendly and suggested the popular menu items. Then our food arrived and it was served to us by the owner, Kai! He shared with us how the restaurant uses top ingredients such as dried chilis imported from Thailand. He and his aunt are the chefs! I love that this is a family owned restaurant that takes great pride in preparing authentic Thai food. Kai is very friendly and shared that his favorites are noodles! First time ordering from this restaurant and the last. I ordered papaya salad, pad thai with shrimp, and red curry. Didn't even try the papaya salad, it smelled spoiled and went straight to the trash. The Pad Thai was the wort I've had in my life - tasteless, the noodles were overcooked and basically broke into tiny pieces as i tried to roll them onto the fork. I paid extra (+$3) for shrimp and found 3 shrimp in the whole dish. The lime was on its last breath and should have not been plated. I ate a few bites, picked out the veggies which were somewhat fresh and threw out the rest. The only item that was good was the red curry. The broccoli was fresh and the dish tasted very well. It's a tiny restaurant so maybe it was just our bad luck but we got stuck sitting next to some weird people (two old couples who kept trying to talk to everyone) and since the tables are so close together, it made for a unpleasant meal. If the food has been better, we could have overlooked the space, but it was also disappointing. The spring rolls were good but the drunken noodles were gummy with too many raw onions. I tried visiting this restaurant several times in the past, but have had consistently negative experiences every time. Everything that I'm writing about in this review is pretty consistent with the previous 3 times that I visited this place. The first thing that I noticed when I walked through the front door (similar to the last 3 times I visited) was that there was no air conditioning. The room temperature in the restaurant felt pretty hot, and almost matched the outdoor temperature (which is currently 79 degrees and very humid at the time of this review). For a restaurant that serves mostly hot dishes, it would have been nice to have indoor fans or something, to help lower the indoor temperature on a humid, summer day. The waitress, however, was very friendly and I appreciated her warm, friendly disposition. She immediately greeted me at the door and seated me in the dining area. When I sat at my table, the first thing I noticed was that the dining area was nearly empty (not a good sign when you're eating lunch at noon, in a generally populated and busy area). There was one other family seated across from me, and the only thing I could focus on was the simple fact that they were all sweating profusely and attempting to swat a few flies that were hovering over their food. The dining area, however, had a comfortable, cozy feel to it. There are benches lined against the walls, with a colorful assortment of pillows, which give the overall space a cozy, living room vibe. I immediately ordered a Thai iced tea, which was served in a wine glass. The Thai iced tea was refreshing, but didn't make up for the fact that it felt like it was over 80 degrees in the restaurant. I also ordered the beef drunken noodles. The dish looked great (as you can see from my photo), but there was nothing special about it. Typically, drunken noodles have a thick, slightly creamy soy sauce base, but these drunken noodles were slightly bland, and it seemed as though the noodles sucked up all of the sauce that was used to cook the noodles with. There were Thai basil leaves, but the flavor of the basil leaves were not infused into the dish, so it seemed as though the basil leaves were mere decorative elements of the dish, sprinkled onto the plate as an afterthought. The beef itself was a bit overcooked, and dry, which left the overall flavor profile of the dish somewhat bland, and absent of the natural characteristics that make a drunken noodle dish a drunken noodle dish. Overall, I have not been pleased with any of the past 4 experiences that I have had at this restaurant, and I will not be returning again. read more

I did not care for the Pad Thai at all, and the pork was thinly sliced and tough, not like the tender shreds I expected.

They have really good food. The pad Thai and the Tom kha soup are especially good. Definitely would recommend!

The food is incredibly fragrant and flavorful, the vibe is very chill and inviting, and the staff are all super friendly. As some other reviews have pointed out, they will often draw something cute on your to-go food containers. I've been looking for a local Thai restaurant that serves good spicy catfish for a long time. I found it in Kook Kai's Thai Noodles. Their catfish entrée is great. They will adjust the spice level to your liking and give you plenty of catfish, along with green beans, eggplant and other vegetables. I can't wait to go back! read more
