Awful greasy food and high prices. I will never go back. Rude employees too. Never again.

I recently got takeout from Spring Garden, and while even the "spicy" options don't seem to have as much heat as I'd prefer, it's a great local option if you are seeking reliable, American-style Chinese food. The prices seemed a bit high until I got my order - the portions are ENORMOUS. I ordered the Szechuan tofu and it was enough for 3 generous portions. My partner got the Moo Shu Vegetable, and his was similarly sized. My food was a little more sweet than spicy, and I will know to ask that the tofu not be deep fried next time I order, but my partner was really happy with what he got - he said it was some of the best Moo Shu that he'd ever had. The restaurant is small, really just for takeout and delivery, and the staff was very polite and friendly. It's not very close to the metro, so not sure when I'll be able to make another trip, but if you're in the area and willing to get delivery or to make the trip, it's absolutely worth it. read more

The food was greasy and tasted like it had been made some number of days before. I always over-order Chinese food so we can eat leftovers for a couple of lunches. This is the only time I can remember that I threw everything out after we ate - and we didn't eat a lot of it. It wasn't too edible. read more

Went back first time in several years. Used to be my 'local' Chinese take out joint when I lived in NW DC. Had one of my 'favorites' for take out - Drunken Beef Noodles. Still satisfies ( tho commensurately more expensive). I would say keep your expectations in line with it being a 'Take-out' joint in non Asian neighborhood and great for when you have that yen to stay home, watch a good streaming series, and devour some decent DC Chinese fare. read more

Went here because it's close to my apartment but they literally tried to charge me over $18 for 4 chicken wings and pork fried rice..... when I asked the lady how such a simple order could cost so much her response was "it's an up charge for pork fried rice." WHAT, where, and since when????? I've never in my life almost paid 20$ for chicken wings from a hole in the wall Chinese spot (DC or not). AND DEFINITELY was not going to start today. I called and asked if the chef could prepare a dish off the menu. It was perfect. The best Chinese I have eaten in a long time. So surprisingly delicious. The recipe is not one I want to share. In all fairness, I did order after peak hours but really appreciated the time they spent helping me eat within my dietary restrictions. I will be keeping this on my list of favorites! read more

I live in DC and there is no doubt a shortage of good Chinese restaurants. Sure, we have your typical "chicken wing and fries" carryouts but they miss out on good Chinese cuisine. I frequented Oriental East in Silver Spring for decades until they closed shop roughly 4-5 years ago. Spring Garden came at the recommendation of our neighbor. He spoke very highly of the food and boy was he on point! Today was my 2nd visit and it was even better than the first. I tried their beef w/broccoli, combination lo mein and shrimp egg foo yung. Can I tell you that everything SLAPPED! No I mean that in a good way! It made me want to slap the first person I saw. The flavors are present and accounted for baby! Whew, and the portion size - on point. I enjoyed everything so much that I went back for 2nds which is rare when I had a full 1st plate. I live 20 mins away and my food was still piping hot when I got home This will definitely be my new go-to spot. If I had to write one negative it would be parking. It's really rough finding street parking since there's no parking lot. If they could, I would recommend that they become a full service restaurant complete with waitstaff and the whole nine. I'm giving this place 3 stars because I am judging it solely on the fact that I have only had two things off of their menu. If and when I eat a larger variety of food, I will update. I went in here to grab a quick snack while waiting for my kids to finish dance class. I decided on the spring rolls and some egg drop soup. The food was fresh, hot and the rolls crispy. I really enjoyed their egg drop soup and have gotten it several more times following my first encounter. I even got my daughters hooked on it and for just $1.98, it's very satisfying along with the side of the crispy noodles. I add a little pepper, some noodles, spoon and then eat. While in here I grabbed on the Belly reward cards and entered my info into the tablet they have on the counter and every time you go in there you just scan and can earn rewards. I already got a free drink! The place is clean, there's ample seating and a nice window seating area to watch the world go by as you eat. There's free wifi access and it's quiet. It seems to be more of a place that people take out their food but I still enjoy sitting in there with my hot soup occasionally. I don't really see any other Chinese take-out places in this area so I guess they have that advantage. I'm just pleased that they don't water down the soup like some places. That is all. read more

The woman who worked there acted like she'd rather be doing any else. She was rude when we asked basic questions about how the meat was cooked. When we got the food and brought it home the wonton soup had ONE tiny wonton. It was basically just watery broth and the one tiny wonton. The other brocoli tasted rancid and we could tell it wasn't fresh. The floor was so dirty, we should have known the food wouldn't be good. read more

The miso was so amazing, the best part about it was the tofu and how well they absorbed the flavor of the miso. Got this right before closing time but it was still just as good as though I had gotten it when they first opened. Definitely recommend. read more

I think this place has the best lunch special in NW DC. Portion size is huge!! I always ask to make mine extra spicy and it totally makes the food taste better in my opinion. The eggplant dish was pretty tasty too. Ask to cook eggplants very well. Usually this is key to good eggplant dish. Unlike other Chinese restaurants, their shrimp size is big too. Not the best American Chinese place in DC, but it's near my place and I occasionally get a hankering for food that is incredibly bad for me, so there you go. :) The people there are quick and efficient, but could be friendlier. No problems or disrespect for as long as I've been going there, but they could put a bit more effort into customer service with a smile. I always get it to go and just eat somewhere else so I can't really comment on dining there, but from what I've noticed when picking up my orders the dining room seems satisfactory. Nothing special, but it looked like a fine place for a casual meal. The sesame noodles are good and I like eating them cold the next day. The other options are pretty standard, though I would like to see a few with a bit more kick and spice. read more

Spring Garden is just half a block away from a dance studio that I frequent so I stop by for a quick lunch quite often. There are 6-8 two top tables in the eating space along with 4ish bar stools that look onto Wisconsin. The service is friendly and quick -- the food comes out hot and fresh within 15 minutes or so of me ordering. I highly recommend the chicken or pork lo mein -- it's really tasty! I've also had the 4 chicken wings and fries which were good but severely overpriced at $7ish dollars in comparison to what I'm used to seeing in other parts of DC or in PG county. This is a great little Chinese food spot and I'll continue stop by! read more

Down the way fr my yoga studio, this is such a great treat on occasion after class. My favorite is the moo shoo vegetable. I also like that they give you hot mustard with your eggroll. A pretty standard American Chinese restaurant. However, on the scheme of such restaurants, it's probably on the lower end. The chow fun was mostly noodles and borderline too dry. The eggplant dish had a [practically] neon-orange sauce - though I liked the quantity of eggplant and carrots. Best crispy beef, best crispy chicken in the metro DC area. Their carry out system is super safe during these COVID-19 times. Been coming here for years, never have had anything less than excellent there. The "decor" isn't much to look at, but who cares--they put their effort into the food, which is always excellent. I ordered delivery through the Yelp app on Sunday and had a very easy and convenient experience. Ordering the food was as simple as placing things in your bag. Luckily there were coupons available automatically through the app and I ended up getting two free egg rolls which were awesome! The app notified me when the order had begun to cook. This place is QUICK. Probably thirty minutes after I had placed my order the delivery man was at my door. All the food was steaming hot and good quality and tasty. Came in craving some Chinese carry out, got exactly what I asked for. Heavily recommend the drunken noodle, flavor is great and make sure to get it spicy for some good kick. The shrimp spring rolls are great too, paired with duck sauce and it tastes amazing. Awful food. Tastes very stale and odd and highly salty. The hot and sour soup was very sour, the balance was not there. We also ordered veggie spring rolls and they sent us the one with shrimp which was actually torn. We don't eat meat. We also got mapo tofu which also tastes stale and very weird taste. I grew up in Southeast DC where you can find a carryout next to every single mailbox, stop sign or traffic light. None of them serve authentic Chinese food, so I know not to expect gourmet food. With that said, this place is probably the worst I've ever had. The food is just bland. It's like a cross between mall food and a microwave bowl from the grocery store. I've had beef and broccoli that tasted like some stew beef made in a pot at home, and combo lo-mein that looked like it was made with spaghetti noodles. The people are nice, they deliver and they're friendly. It's nice and clean in there, but the chinese food just isn't my cup of tea. So why give them three stars? Chicken Wings and Mumbo Sauce!!!* *For the uninitiated, wings with mumbo sauce is a cultural cuisine amongst us "urban" kids who grew up in DC. Go into any "hood" carryout and you'll see a hand written sign on the wall listing prices for the various number of wings/fries combination. I was completely surprised to find that they actually sell it on this side of town, because to be honest, you usually only find it in the hood. The wings are crispy, the mumbo sauce is more barbecue-ish like you'd find at Eddie Leonards, although they refuse to put it on the chicken for you. They give it to you on the side and charge 75 cents for additional cups. Also, sometimes they only have potato wedges instead of crinkle fries (odd), but it's good enough to give them three stars. read more

Great delivery place and worth the small delivery fee. Their lunch specials are a super deal. Portions are large and the food tastes very fresh. My friends and I have ordered many things and are pleased. Some of our favorites are: curry chicken, curry shrimp, chicken chow fun, pepper steak, beef with snow peas, king Po chicken, human shrimp, and Singapore noodles. The wonton and chicken noodle.soups are great. Love the ginger flavor in the wontons. Skip the egg rolls and stick to the spring rolls. Edamame and avocado salad are nice. This is a solid 3-star Chinese take-out restaurant. Don't expect any more or any less from it and you won't be disappointed. The soups are solid, especially the hot and sour soup, and the entrees are fresh and arrive hot. The delivery is usually fast and they are always friendly at the door. Their online ordering system is easy to use and allows you to select a time you want the food to be ready if you're going to pick it up (or set a later time for delivery, too, I think). Some tips: the sweet and sour chicken is the only bad dish I've had there so far. It's breaded and fried in what seems like pancake batter. It comes out like chicken in fried dough with a neon orange sauce. Don't do it. The Szechuan tofu with mixed vegetables is good, as is the Kung pao chicken, and all the chicken-with-vegetable type dishes. All the mooshu dishes are good. So this review was going to be all, Meh. And then I realized that I have never, not once, had Chinese take out that tasted any different from my Spring Garden experience. Of course I've had better Chinese. But that's not why I stepped into Spring Garden, was it? 1.) It is considerably less crowded, and probably a little cheaper, than Meiwah, AND you don't have to deal with Meiwah (added bonus!!!) 2.) It is a family-run operation. I like to support those. 3.) I walked in on a Sunday night at 8:15 on the way to Safeway and got lazy. I walked back out 10 minutes later, dinner in hand. I just had the worst Chinese food I've ever had, and that's saying a lot, considering a beetle once crawled out of my lo mein (not here). I ordered from Spring Garden for delivery - it's the first and last time I will ever eat food from here. Ordered, expecting to have leftovers, but needing to get to the $12 minimum: Crab Wontons with Cream Cheese - typical meh frozen and fried, Egg Drop Soup - which they forgot, so I don't get to review that, and Cashew Chicken Lunch Special - more detail follows. I would have been upset by the small portion size (other local Chinese places are much more generous than this for lunch specials) if the chicken were edible. There were about 4 cashews in the meal - they used 'filler' in this small portion and made it really chicken-with-vegetables-and-a-couple-of-cashews. The chicken was literally just dark meat fat (barely even meat) with zero flavor. I am not picky with my Chinese food - I get that it's fast food and it's not generally really high quality anywhere. This is about delivery only. I have never been inside the restaurant. I used to order from Mayflower. A lot. To the point where I started to worry they had memorized my standard order and had it ready to go before I even ordered it. But then one night, my roommate and I decided to try Spring Garden on a whim. I pondered the shrimp and broccoli -- usually a decent thing to try at a new place. And I decided, "Hmm... I think I am in the mood for some string beans." So I ordered the shrimp and string beans, medium hot. Let me tell you, Yelp. It was amazing. It was really amazing. The shrimp were eh, but the string beans were the best thing I had ever eaten. They were very spicy, something for which I was literally not prepared (I have always had plenty of water on hand since). Another time, I ordered it mild, and it lacked the delicious flavor that the medium hot possesses. I have also had the shrimp wonton soup, which was a little salty for my tastes but not awful, and shrimp rolls (delicious and so fresh!). My vegetarian roommate ordered kung pao tofu and enjoyed it. Basically, I order the shrimp and string beans, like... once a week. It is really good, even though the shrimp differ in size each time. Honestly, I'd probably be just as happy or happier with just the szechuan string beans on their vegetarian menu, but I order the shrimp because it helps me meet the rather high minimum of $12 (maybe my only complaint). This was my first time ordering from Spring Garden, but it won't be my last if they keep up the quality and freshness of their food. I ordered after the lunch rush and before the dinner hour, so maybe that's the tip for a good meal. Being the creature of habit that I am, I typically order Mongolian Beef every time I eat Chinese food. Today, I decided to spread my wings and try something new, so I ordered the pork Chow Fun. I'm glad I did. First, the delivery was prompt -- maybe 30 to 40 minutes or so. The delivery guy was pleasant and handed me the order. I could tell it was still hot from handling the bottom of the bag, but when I opened the containers, the food was still piping hot! Second, the Chow Fun is delicious and it has plenty of meat in it! There's literally one to two good-size pieces of pork with every forkful. The container of food was so hot that I had to wait a few minutes for it to cool a bit. I'm a stickler for food that's hot -- cold food is always a deal-breaker for me. Finally, the only thing that wasn't in the bag was the extra soy sauce I asked for, but it's OK. I'd rather have hot, delicious food and just two packets of soy sauce than a cup of soy sauce and disappointingly cold, tasteless food! The best part is that it'll last me at least two meals. This is why I tend to avoid the "carry-outs" and so forth, among other reasons. For the quick Chinese-American lunch, I would suggest ordering from Spring Garden - if in the area. The shrimp w/broccoli is pretty simple - I had them add pepper. The chicken w/black bean sauce is flavorful - again, plus pepper. The hot & sour soup is hot - & sour. No surprises here. The spring rolls are not as crisp as I would have liked them, but who am I to complain? 3.5 stars for a good, filling meal when needed. *They are not stingy with the fortune cookies, which is a big plus for me - although, I am not quite sure why... read more

SKETCHY DELIVERY PRACTICES. A food order was delivered to my house - I opened the door and the delivery person handed it to me, no payment needed. There was no receipt included with the food. I thought it was for my roommate who was not home at the time, so I accepted the food and set it in my kitchen. Literally 45 minutes later, the delivery person came back to my house asking for the food back because it was delivered to the wrong house. I would hate to be the people that received that cold food that was sitting in my house for almost an hour! read more

It's true there is nothing spectacular about Spring Garden, BUT there is nothing BAD about it either. It's like that girl you used to date in college, you have fond memories of her, you wouldn't want to marry her but you don't exactly want to run her over with your car either. And if she happens to be hanging out with you and your friends at a bar you'd probably still have a pretty good time. In other words it's good every now and then but if I had to have it every day I might think otherwise. Great online ordering system for such a small standard Chinese Restaurant. The food is consistent, possibly a bit greasy at times but then that's kind of what you expect from a greasy spoon random local Chinese place. If you want cheap gourmet Asian, go to P.F. Chang's, if you live or work in the Tenleytown area and just want something that's not going to suck, then hit up Spring Garden.
