This was a nice sushi experience on Magazine! I actually don't think that Orleans Parish has many great sushi spots, but this is a nice one! The staff were super, super kind and attentive. I opted for bar seating to see the sushi being prepared fresh. All of my dishes were tasty..I just wouldn't recommend the cucumbers because the marinade was missing some tangy/umani-ness and the cucumbers probably should've been smashed for optimal sauce absorbtion. But, the fish in my roll was great quality and the mussels were delish. Pro tip: their speciality rolls are pretty big, but you can order a half portion. Was very excited to go try after such amazing 5 star reviews. Specifically wanted a great spicy tuna handroll expecting that their spicy tuna would be phenomenal since the reviews made it seem as if this were excellent grade sushi. Roll came out, first bite highly disappointed as it seemed like low grade quality sushi. I next ordered a rainbow roll, which was absolutely awful! Fish on top was farrr from fresh and the crab mixture was not good along w mushy rice holding the roll together.. I don't know who qualifies this as a top grade sushi restaurant but in my honest opinion it's a mediocre grade type sushi restaurant camouflaged by the location and chic name and decor.. read more

I think this might be the best sushi and rolls I've had in the city. Koru is a cute small place but they are not playing with the options and delivery. There's plenty to choose from on the menu for each category. I went in and was greeted and given the option for a table or at the sushi bar. I chose the sushi bar. I ordered a Koru Fashioned, which is their equivalent of an old fashioned. It was strong! But that's perfect! Don't ever change please! For an appetizer, I ordered the baked green mussels, which were really flavorful and tender. The sauce is very savory and good for dipping. I ordered the M&M roll because it had a little bit of everything in it. I also ordered the salmon belly sushi. Now this was the highlight! Everything was so fresh and tasted so good, but that salmon belly was so good I ordered it TWICE. It's so buttery smooth and fatty and flavorful! I'll be back just for that! read more

My Airbnb was within walking distance and I am so happy I made time to try Koru out. I went solo for lunch between conference calls. I loved being able to sit and watch the chef make my order. I think I surprised them with how much pickled ginger I ate. LOL Everything was fresh and tasted amazing. The staff were all so fun. It seemed like everyone was one big happy family. Visiting for a conference so went out to eat with my brother. My brother is very adamant that New Orleans struggles in the Asian food department but he was pleasantly surprised. The place is small. Went around dinner and was seated immediately, with option for table or at the bar. Got the koru roll, salmon crudo, and a few sushi a la carte. The fish is fresh and tender. We opted to get it dressed, so it came with oil dressing and toppings which was a nice addition. Overall, pricey but likely fair for New Orleans sushi. I had a great experience at Koru. The service was good, both the server and sushi chef took time explaining dishes. It's a small spot, but worth trying. We got there right before a wave of people and sat at the sushi bar. I was super excited about trying the Japanese oyster special, but they ran out. Our food was fresh and came out in a timely manner. I ordered miso soup and beef tataki from the kitchen. We really like the beef tataki! It was presented well. We ordered yellow tail, smelt roe, a rainbow roll ($16), and the koru roll ($22) from the sushi bar. Everything was fresh and flavorful. The chili garlic and smelt roe gave the Kuro roll a nice pop. The bar had limited choices, so my cousin had difficulty finding something on the drink menu. She settled on a dirty martini; she said it was one of the best she's had. We also had 2 rounds of a hot sake. In true New Orleans fashion, the bad weather briefly knocked out their card payment system. They handed it with grace and patience. Seemed like a decent spot to take my partner for their birthday dinner. We pulled up, ready to feast, hoping for a sushi experience that'd knock our socks off. Instead? More like a light tap on the shoulder--forgettable and kinda disappointing. We kicked things off with three appetizers: carpaccio, fried calamari, and seaweed salad. The carpaccio? Standard. Nothing to write home about, nothing to get excited over. Just... there. The calamari? Again, fine. No crunch that made me wanna do a happy dance, but it got the job done. Seaweed salad? Same story. Decent, but I could've gotten the same at any generic sushi joint. Now, let's talk sushi. We ordered salmon belly, toro, BBQ eel, halibut, and uni. I had hopes. I had dreams. And they were all crushed one bite at a time. * Salmon belly - Fine. Standard. Came with chili garlic oil, which I've seen a million times before. Not impressed. * Halibut - Tasted clean, but forgettable. Wouldn't order it again. * Toro - Meh. Nothing special. Also, the knife work? A little rough. Looked like it got handled by someone in a rush. * BBQ eel - Lukewarm. Didn't feel fresh. And if I'm eating eel, I want that fresh, slightly charred warmth. Disappointing. * Uni - This one hurt. I love uni when it's done right, and I've had my fair share. But this? NOPE. The second I caught that fishy, salty smell, I knew it wasn't gonna sit right with me. And when I tasted it? Yeah... I literally spat it out. No thank you. Overall? Kuro Sushi isn't the worst, but it's definitely not making my must-return list. With so many sushi spots out there, I need something that stands out, and this just wasn't it. If I'm craving good sushi, I'd rather go to Yakuza House or Daiwa, where I know I'm getting quality. Former NOLA residents visiting for business. Spouse and I spotted Kuro while driving by in the early afternoon, liked the look of the place and the reviews I could find, and arrived at about 8pm. The venue was nearly full, but we were lucky enough to be immediately seated at the sushi bar by very friendly and efficient staff. We can't claim to be connoisseurs, never having been to Japan, but we've had sushi across the United States and Europe and Kuro's sushi is easily in our top three sushi spots anywhere. The sushi rice is exceptional - just sticky enough. Not too much vinegar, so you can still taste the rice AND the fish. Just a touch of sweetness. All of the fish we had, toro, salmon, salmon belly, tuna, hamachi, halibut, mackerel, yellowtail, eel... beautiful pieces of fish hand sliced just before serving and with exquisite flavor. (A little less sauce on the eel might be good, but that's a matter of taste. You might find it's just the right amount.) Spouse has celiac so we could not try many of the rolls, but the spicy tuna roll has just the right amount of heat and the yellowtail roll was delicious. Prices reasonable for excellent quality. I had the best dining experience of my life at Koru. The food was phenomenal. Every bite had a different flavor and added a little something special. The sashimi was served in thick slices and melted in your mouth. The rolls created an experience in themselves and you can't leave without ordering the Fried Oreo ice cream. The dinner at Koru was mine and my niece's favorite meal during our visit to NOLA. It was a 10 out of 10! The quality of the sashimi was amazing! It was extremely fresh and the texture was like silk. The fact they had uni made our day, but the fresh wasabi was the cherry on top! We love sushi and I have never given a 10 to any sushi restaurant. Koru is the first.
