I really wanted to like this place. I've been here dozens of times because it's local to me, over 2yrs. I've spent hundreds of dollars here. But at a certain point, I realized it just isn't working out. Why I kept going -- the coffee is good; they make a strong latte and charge a very good price for it. I've bought per cup, and I also bought their beans multiple times. I've brought friends here, too. The food is decent, a little expensive, not bad but not something I would purposefully seek out. More like, it's available and I'm already here. The food is very photogenic. Why I'm not going anymore -- the service is bad. They're friendly people, and that's just fine. But they're also REALLY slow. I mean I've waited 20min+ for a morning latte, and it wasn't that busy. There was like 3 other customers. Numerous times, there's plenty of staff but they're just joking around with each other behind the counter. They're nice but they're not doing their job. At a certain point, the job is what matters....not every customer is here to just hang out. You gotta keep the line moving. I also think they should call out names (when your order is ready) MUCH louder than they do. I've seen multiple people waiting around and not realizing their cup was ready, so it's not just 1 person with poor hearing. Lately their rewards system is "down", and I guess that's it for me. Not a fan. I waited long time on line and asked for ice cappuccino, which they told me that they don't do that. Instead they offered me a drink that is similar. I took that and also added half avocado toast. I received 1/3 of drink in a big plastic cup. Despite the bitter taste (which they were kind to put more milk), it was a wired way of serving. I was in a meeting so o didn't say anything. Then I got the avocado toast. Damn I can't believe I spend $15 in this place. Not worth it. Also they are strict with rules of laptop using. So far, I have been very impressed with the service and food. The young lady behind the counter is on point and quick. She is very professional. I am addicted to the Tuscan kale salad, though. That salad was meticulously made. The combination of beets, oranges, walnuts, and ricotta salata dressed in sherry vinaigrette have you wanting to eat this salad every single day (if you can afford it, lol). The food isn't cheap. You definitely feel fulfilled after eating but paying 10 something for a salad every other day becomes a financial drain. On the first visit, I purchased two boiled eggs for a dollar each. The boiled eggs were okay; I could've made them at home so it wasn't worth it, in my opinion. So in this eatery, you can pop out your laptop and chill. Well, you know what I mean. One of the best things about Park Slope is all the different coffee shops (unfortunately all of them do not open before 7-8am so anyone in medical field is stuck with Starbucks, DD, or some other chain). However one of my favorites is KOS. Their coffee and coffee/espresso drinks are by far the best across the board. Some other establishments may have 1 or 2 that trump the equivalent at KOS, but overall you will be satisfied with anything you order off the menu. My Favorites: -Carmel Latte -Maple Syrup Latte -Iced Chai Latte w/shot of espresso (THE ABSOLUTE BEST IN PARK SLOPE) My only critiques of the place is that it is on the more $$$ side (worth it) and that they only take cash. Also, I'm starting to see a trend that a lot of the coffee shops in the area (excluding Root Hill Cafe on 4th Ave) are not really friendly to people studying/using laptops. KOS is in the middle of the bunch, but their "designated study area" is so small that you have to wait to so move to that area. If that wasn't enough, my friend also ordered a frittata with a side of bacon and was delivered the most embarrassing portion of food I've seen for $12. Trust me, it would have been fine if the food looked like it should cost $12. Oh, and you guessed it: the $5 side of bacon included not one but two pieces! I visited on a Friday morning for breakfast. I had a feeling I was going to love this place simply based on the plants at the entrance and the charming interior. I ordered the biscuit, egg and sausage breakfast sandwich per the recommendation of my sister and wow, it didn't disappoint. I've visited countless cafes just to try either the biscuits or scones (nothing I love more than a fatty and buttery pastry - really!). I could tell by the fact that there were only two biscuits left in the bakery case that these things were popular and they satisfied my craving while also being a hearty breakfast. I also like that they didn't add any cheese and uniquely used a hard boiled egg instead of scrambled, fried or the weird eggs that look like a rubbery square from fast food places. No, this was a freshly made breakfast sandwich! It's also served with some greens on the side just so you can pat yourself on the back of eating your veggies, ha. I also ordered my usual drink of choice, an iced latte with oat milk. I recall telling my sister something along the lines of, liking the latte even more than Stumptown coffee which is what I loyally drink at my favorite fancy coffee shops up in Boston. The experience was complete with comfy seating or maybe, we got lucky for arriving at 10:00 on a morning where most people weren't working out of this cafe. If you're here in the morning though, you'll notice the line will form quickly! So I recommend to be mindful of other guests who'd like a seat but there is plenty of bar style seating facing the front window of the cafe for people-watching too. read more

I've walked past Kos a million times but never bothered to check it out. My colleague suggested meeting there, and I was pleasantly surprised. The prices are fair, and the service was quick and friendly on my visit. The house blend is a good cup of coffee, not too acidic or burnt (like Starbucks). They have those buy 10 get one free cards. There are plenty of tables, packed closely enough that you can poke your neighbor (this is New York, after all). But it still manages to feel comfortable. The best part is that it's relatively quiet. I'm not sure if there was music playing or not, but it was at a low enough volume that you can concentrate and do work or have a conversation. There was no stroller brigade or screaming toddlers. The design of the place is functional, not particularly inspired (and probably why I walked by so many times). And the neighborhood still needs a place to meet for coffee or tea that is open past 7 pm. That said, I will happily come here again. read more

After discovering one of my favorite coffee shops was closed on Sunday, I wandered through Park Slope, looking for a cafe to get some writing done. I'm pretty picky about atmosphere and seating options, so it took me a while to find Kos Kaffe. The cafe is so sunny and well lit, with high, airy ceilings it instantly seemed like the place to buckle down and get some work done. This is a very laid back spot, with homey touches like houseplants and books and flea market furniture. The place was busy, but I found a spot at one of the laptop tables with no problem. In weekends, there are certain hours when people using laptops can only sit at bar tables and these big communal tables. Might be during the week too, not sure. A little annoying, but there seemed to be enough seating and outlets for everyone who needed them the whole time I was there, and it was very busy. Unfortunately, the benches are not very comfy. The coffee was good and comes in a massive mug if you order it to stay. After a while, I got hungry and ordered a grilled cheese sandwich, which was next level, with an oozing sea of tangy cheese and very buttery toast. So glad I found this place, it's one of the most atmospheric restaurants and perfect for relaxing weekend work or catching up with friends over casual brunch. read more

I come here all the time, and I love the vibe... the big windows are great for people watching and keeps the place open and airy . The owners, Allon and Sarah are amazing and friendly people... Sarah is a chef and created the menu, which is fresh, local, and delicious. If you are coming for breakfast, the oatmeal is one of the best items on the menu, with roasted pears and dried apricots... for lunch the Kale Salad with fresh beets, oranges, and walnuts... the coffee is great too! This place made a good first impression on me, so maybe I'm forgiving its flaws a little more than I should. I ordered an iced latte, which I thought would be under $5 (which was all the cash I had -- they've got a $10 card minimum, which is insane and unreasonable, in my opinion), but with tax it was $5.20ish. As I counted my cash, the cashier said, "Do you have $5?" I said yes, to which she replied, "That's fine." and started making the latte. So my first impression was that they provide great customer service. On my next visit, I'd forgotten about their minimum and didn't have any cash. So I purchased a gift card for $20 and used that, as there isn't a minimum with those. Their seating for laptops is somewhat limited, and it's usually pretty busy when I'm there (late morning/early afternoon), but I've always managed to find a seat. There are quite a few tables reserved for those not using laptops, so you shouldn't have a problem if you're coming for a meal. My only negative experience was when I recently got a cortado to go and the shot was overextracted and papery and disgusting. I'd gotten that sense when I'd had their lattes, but there's enough milk in that to disguise a bad shot. That, in my opinion, is the true test of a coffee shop -- when it's just the espresso (or, in this case, the espresso and a little milk), how good is the drink? In this case, it was awful. So I'll be sticking to their lattes. But overall, this place has a nice vibe, the staff is kind, and the neighborhood is beautiful, so I'll definitely be coming back. read more

I called the restaurant to see what was going on and was informed by the woman who answered the phone that this "really wasn't their problem" and that I needed to call Seamless. I tried to explain to her that I'd already called Seamless, to no avail. She proceeded to yell and talk over me, repeating that this "wasn't their problem". I am specifically noting the date and time of what occurred so that the manager of this establishment can figure out who this shining beacon of excellent customer service is. I went in today to get a hard boiled egg, fruit salad and coffee to go, and after 15 minutes, got this as my $6 fruit salad (apples that aren't ready yet, and one tiny pear and tiny apple with seeds). Kind of a rip off, and not really a fruit salad, even though the people working there are incredibly nice. You'll need at least $4 cold hard cash here for a mediocre caffeine-free ice tea that is almost as flavorful as Snapple. The air conditioning is insufficient during NYC's summer months. For WiFi on my laptop, in the "lap top designated zone," it was easier and faster to create my own personal hot spot through my phone then to get this place's password. Some of the hard, heavy chairs make you regret sitting in them or even looking at them. All of the above combined with the broken lock on the bath room door make this place lackluster. As I despise Park Slope losing authentic venues (if this is even an authentic NYC cafe), it would be GREAT to see this space get its $hit together and perhaps increase its presence through night life entertainment, such as live music, comedy, book readings, or poetry slams. Or maybe this cafe simply needs a REAL air conditioner with a bathroom that locks, comfortable chairs, and more flavorful drinks with less ice cubes in them? With the new Starbucks opening on 4th Avenue and Union Street, this town's independent businesses must work harder than ever before to make a dollar. I do have sympathy. As much as I don't like it, Starbucks has the cheaper beverages and better air conditioning. So please local non-Starbucks cafes -- GET IT TOGETHER. Everyone has a different taste in coffee. It's like chocolate or wine; people have strong opinions unless they're not a Yelp reviewer or they're someone that doesn't seek out restaurant reviews at all (aka people without taste buds). My taste profile? I drink a lot of coffee, and I do not like light roasts. I'm not a snob, so I'm okay with cream and sugar even though it shouldn't be necessary. Most importantly, I am a fan of Kos's coffee. It's very well thought out and roasted, and it's ground fresh and made strong. It's worth the price if you know what you like and know that it's rare for a place to hit all your marks. The food is also phenomenal. Incredibly high quality/standards for a small cafe. Dreamy buckwheat pancakes. The cool to cold service doesn't bother me because polite is all that should be required. My only warning is the wait for food. If you're in a hurry or trying to keep a schedule, this is not the place for you. This food is not fast, but it will be perfectly cooked and seasoned. read more

What's up with some of these negative comments. I am not a hipster. I'm a marketing professional and a 61 year old grandmother. I love this cafe because I am always greeted warmly, by name, by the young staff and chef, and feel completely comfortable hanging out with my coffee and a good book. The food is excellent and yes, prepare to wait for it. The kitchen is minute and one person is preparing everything. But if you're not in a rush, you'll find the best yogurt/homemade granola/fruit bowl, to die for buckwheat pancakes, great salads and sandwiches and a delicious cappuccino. I've had coffee from around NYC and Kos Kaffe's is decent, but nowhere near being the best and I've had coffee from all over and from different roasters as well. Anyway, we came here as we saw that they had a good amount of seating available here and I wanted to get some work done. There are signs on most stables stating that you cannot be on a laptop before a certain time (4 PM I think). Luckily, I was there after 4 PM. It was a bit cramped on the teeny tiny tables but we managed to make it work. My only real complaint is that there was no air conditioning in here and it was 90 degrees outside. Also, it wasn't ventilated properly, so as they were roasting or cooking, you could actually see the smog in the space. Upon leaving, I realized that I had stayed in there long enough (about an hour and a half) for my clothes to smell like it too. That was a big no no for me. read more

I'm seeing a lot of reviews that have a similar experience to mine. I went here to buy an iced coffee and thinking it was a roasting house, I'd assume it would be on point. I waited over 22 minutes, yes 20 minutes (I timed it), from when we walked in to me getting a black iced coffee. There were 5 individuals in front of us and 2-3 workers. They were moving at a snails pace. The food selection looked mediocre with an extremely high price tag. Theres an overly complicated laptop policy with internet use that seems to be the size of an essay. I didnt use a laptop here, but if I did, I swear it would be more complicated than taking the LSATS. Overall, I got a 'meh' coffee, that took an outrageously long time to order. read more

Came here and despite saying I wasn't going to order food from here again... I did. I got a veggie frittata which I did not like. It was rather bland. I didn't need the butter knife (thank god). It was gross! How could the workers have the right mind to wrap that silverware in a napkin and think it's ok to give it to a customer? No laptop use at private tables between the hours of noon and 3 pm. SO glad I checked this Kafka-esque policy before ordering! When I walked in, I naïvely assumed that a coffee shop that clearly seems to cater to the laptop crowd would...y'know, cater to the laptop crowd. I mean, sure, I get if for some places in Manhattan. If you're in the middle of a bustling business district and you have three tables, you probably don't want some jerk lingering with a small coffee and a glass of water all day. But this is Park Slope, and the place is GIANT. More than half the tables were unoccupied when I stopped in at about 12:30, with the poor laptop people crowded onto uncomfortable counters and a meager communal table. I also get if you're trying to be a place where people meet for lunch, but this wasn't a restaurant that serves coffee: this is a coffee shop with some food. The people sitting at the tables were all alone, and all working----some on paper, some on iPads (which is different from a laptop how, exactly? yet is apparently tolerated and encouraged). Anyway, their laptop policy lost them my business that afternoon, and forever (or at least until they adopt something more sensible). I like to hang out at coffee shops and get work done. I usually spend a fair amount of money when I do. You'd think a coffee shop like Kos would understand that. read more
