Having found no noteworthy restaurants in Franklin, we decided to drive down the highway to Kostos for some ethnic fare. Having read positive things about the flaming cheese, I had to try the SAGANAKI. It could have been great, but it was a little strange. The cheese was sliced to the right thinness to allow for a nice crisp on both sides. The lemon squeezed on top was nice. However, the cheese itself had a strange flavor. I've had this dish numerous times at countless Greek restaurants, but this one had a very odd flavor. I don't know if it was the type of cheese used or if there was something added to the outside that burned onto the pan and created the flavor. The PITAS served with the saganaki were very nice. Fresh, warm and slightly buttery grilled. The house made MEATBALLS were excellent, according to my husband. They were a nice large size and came with a good amount of red sauce. The side Greek salad was a nice size for $3.50. Although the dressing lacked flavor and was too oily. Husband's SHRIMP skewer was served with rice and salad. Everything on the plate was super oily. It tasted fine but wasn't the healthy option he'd hoped for. Service was great. In and out quickly, which is what we wanted. In 30° super windy weather, it wasn't the best time to sit out on the porch area, but the overhead heaters do a pretty decent job. read more

We used to come to Kostas regularly. We enjoyed the casual family experience. Recently, they made changes to the theme, menu and overall service in response to Covid19. It's now like a fast food Restuarant. Illuminated menu board and all. The food was served cool to warm. You have to get plastic ware and plastic drink cups. Overall, I would give a basic average rating. We will need to find a new place to go to get casual quality service and inviting food presentations. read more

Food was great. Service not so much. Server never brought out salads, didn't bring out dinner rolls as she said she would until our food came out and we asked about it. Did not see her in between ordering and getting food. She told us our meal would be a $1 cheaper since she forgot our salads. Oh, boy! This family owned restaurant has a menu that has something for everyone. While they are primarily a Greek restaurant, they also have many traditional Italian dishes and burgers, seafood, ribs, soups, and salads. They also offer daily specials which are posted on the board as you walk in. Our server greeted us shortly after we were seated and took our drink orders. If it's your first time, it will take a while to make your way through the menu. We had four in our party and three of us got the Greek sandwiches and the other person got the shrimp and pasta salad which was a special of the day. The gyros were cooked just right and came with a Greek salad and fries on the side. The Greek tzatziki sauce which was very good also came on the side. The shrimp and pasta salad had a very generous amount of shrimp and was seasoned just right. We were here later in the afternoon and the place was almost full, so when ever you come you may have to wait. Our server checked on us several times and offered us all To-go drinks. Everything about this place is very well done. We will definitely stop again when we are in the neighborhood. read more

Tonight was the first time that I have had an absolutely horrible meal here. I am so disappointed, as I usually look forward to having a meal here when in town on business. I ordered the Gyro Platter without the pita and with mixed veggies instead of fries. The portion of gyro meat was ALMOST enough to cover the palm of your hand. It looked like it had been run through a chopper instead of the generous, long slices that they normally serve. Also, the only vegetables that they had were candied, overcooked, carrots. The last meal that I had here a couple of weeks ago, and didn't review, was mediocre. I will probably be exploring other eateries on the rest of my business trips. The service that we received from the waitress was the only redeeming point on this visit. :( read more

I selected the meatloaf and was overwhelmingly impressed by how great it was. It tasted more like a family recipe, handed down from father to son than restaurant fare. My husband and I just went here today for lunch on our honeymoon! Everything we ate was amazing. We had the chicken pasta, Greek salad, lemon chicken soup, and Greek lasagna. My husband was in love with the sauce on the lasagna as its a little sweeter than most with a touch of cinnamon. We are thinking about going back tomorrow for lunch and dessert! We got Kostas to go for 17 people. Kostas was on top of things! This may be the first time I've had the whole to-go order for the team correct. Everything was absolutely delicious, the service was great, the owner's dad came out and said hello and even took care of our bus driver with a gyro and fries. We will for sure come back here if we visit WCU again. The girls all said really good things. I ordered a Greek salad with chicken and it was good. We are local people who eat here often. The menu has a very large and varied selection of entrees, as well as nightly specials, and the prices are very reasonable. They have carrot cake slices that are huge and so delicious! My only criticism is that in a restaurant whose clients are generally tourists passing through, it would be nice for the manager/owner to act as if he recognizes us. read more

One of the best things about small towns are family owned restaurants. My visit to Kostas Family Restaurant reinforced this. From entry to exit the smiles and service were fantastic. I was greeted and seated immediately upon entry. Just after 1pm the place was pretty full, so I didn't expect the food to come out so fast, but it did. Taylor was my server and she was great! I had the Philly steak sandwich with a side salad. Both items were ordered with a couple of subtractions from their typical menu description (no onions & no peppers), I say this because they were both served in a timely manner and correct. Again, Taylor was great. The salad was fresh and the Philly was delicious with melting cheese throughout. Taylor thanked me and invited me back (2 great points for a server to make). She directed me to the front counter to settle my bill with the cashier. I did not catch this young ladies name but she was ANOTHER smiling, friendly employee. Came here on our way to Durham from Atlanta. Traffic was horrible and so Siri diverted us up this way instead of our usual route. This restaurant is so good we will now not only be stopping here whenever we go to Durham to visit family, we will be changing our route to accommodate that. Still, it was so well seasoned and fresh it was super tasty. Hummus and tzatziki with pita - This was good, all parts of it. Tasty spreads, soft slightly chewy pita, zingy olives. yum! Gyro Salad - This was yummy and fresh. I will say however that it comes with very little meat. So if you are a carnivore, order extra meat. I don't understand the accolades. The food was acceptable, but hardly what I'd consider great. The Spanakopita - dumbed down to "spinach pie" on the menu - was bland and flavorless. My wife had a shrimp and pasta dish that was nothing more than a pile of spaghetti with over-cooked obviously not fresh shrimp in a bland and flavorless red sauce. I eat here at least once a week and love it. All my restaurant criteria are met: high quality food, variety, friendly service, and good value. My favorite is the Greek salad with gyro meat. Very large platter so it fills me up. The clam chowder is surprisingly one of the best I've ever had. The carrot cake is fantastic and a single slice is big enough to split with the whole table. One of the more recommended restaurants in the small town of Dillsboro, Kostas is *the* place to go for anything resembling Greek/Italian in the Sylva area. The locals swear by it, will praise it and for the area, it rightfully deserves a large majority of that praise. They have some amazing options for lunch in the form of sandwiches and gyros, the flaming cheese is a must have. I've ate here countless times and enjoyed each experience for the most part. I've had a few dishes that were better than others, but this is a place I will continue to visit and is clearly one of Sylva's best dining options.
