When you are in the Smoky Mountains (NC) you can only eat so much BBQ. I know it is hard to believe, but for me it is true. To our surprise, Kobe Express had some very fresh sushi and very tasty calamari. I have had the opportunity to eat her twice over the last month and I have not be disappointed with the food. With us still being in COVID times, it was not surprising to have everything delivered in to-go containers. Sure hope we will return to table service pre-COVID style. The reason I gave three stars was not the food, but was the service. Our first time eating here was good service, but this last time it seemed like we were bothering the waitress. I guess everyone can have a bad day, but it always makes a more pleasant dining experience when both the patrons and wait staff are happy. Also makes for greater tips! read more

Honestly not bad for what you might expect of sushi from Western NC. The rolls I got with spicy mayo/other sauces were a little heavy handed on the sauce for my tastes (I prefer to taste the fish), but overall I can't complain. Good portion, reasonable enough price, friendly staff. I'll probably stop by again while I'm in town since I'm not much of a BBQ/burger/fried chicken type person and that seems like all they got in this part of the country haha. read more

Good food, mediocre service. I told the server my kids would have water- she told me they had pink lemonade. I told her again that they'd have water. She brought pink lemonades. I then ordered food for my kids and again she told me about something different they have for kids. I'm aware of what's offered as I looked at the menu. She never came to refill drinks, we had to go to the counter for silverware and to go plates, the bill hit the table as soon as the drinks were brought out and we never saw her again. September 30 2022 Walk in the door to see a sign that reads, "To go or reg seat yourselves." Sit down at what looked like a clean table, server stops by (not to greet us or any sort of pleasantries) just long enough to wipe the table, saying it wasn't clean.We apologized, as it looked clean to us. Anyway, when we get the menus I let her know it will be to go, she snatched up the menus and silverware and say, "They're doing to go at the counter," and walks away. At this point we decide to just leave, as her attitude and demeanor were not hospitable in the least. As we walk out, she yells back at us, "The counter is just over there. You can go order," with a condescending tone. The restaurant was not very busy. She even stopped to talk to a customer about her schedule before being our menus. Teriyaki, grilled and hibachi style dinners and fresh sushi are menu options. I got steak and chicken with broccoli, fried rice and carrots; it was tasty..I left full. My friend had the hibachi chicken and broccoli and she enjoyed it too! Service was friendly and quick and a highlight was that right outside the back foot was a family of elk! I've had some really terrible meals during my travels but this one didn't rank amongst them. However, I was very unimpressed by my meal at Kobe Express especially after reading all the high reviews before my visit. Both me and my wife ordered the Hibachi Steak combination. I had chicken, wife had shrimp. All meats were very well done and not very flavorful. Not horrible but not that great either. The rice had parts that were so crunchy that I thought I had broken off a piece of my tooth but it was just very crunchy rice!!?? Wife had the clear broth soup that was good. I had the wilted salad with ginger dressing. Way too much dressing and it had a very slushy texture unlike any ginger dressing I've ever had. We also ordered egg rolls as appetizers that were on par with just about every low price Chinese food shop. The carrots? Weirdly served as a type of side dish and very sweet and lukewarm. Probably best to be left off the plate. The server was very good and the food arrived very quickly. The restaurant like most in Cherokee is a bit run down and slightly dirty. Decided to visit this establishment when traveling through the Cherokee area. The only think I can say is stay away from this place. The booth I sat in was very in comfortable and needed repair. The table rocked back and forth while I tried to eat. I started with sushi. It was pretty good not the rice was too sweet. The clear broth was acceptable. It's certainly not a fancy restaurant in New York City with upscale decorations and atmosphere. The furnitures are outdated. But I had great dining experience. The staffs are very nice and accommodating. Highly recommend their hibachi or teriyaki combination platter, as good as other hibachi places I have been to. We were very skeptical to have dinner here while visiting Smoky Mountains National Park but we were pleasantly surprised and came here to dine two nights in a row. First night we got the Hibachi steak, chicken and steak combination platter which comes with the clear broth soup, carrots. The next night we had the Hibachi combination and substituted the rice for soba noodles and had the vegetable tempura and fried calamari. It was delicious. Fast and friendly service. The food was hot and well prepared. The Fried Calamari was good, a little heavy on the batter but it was cooked perfectly. The Jumbo Shrimp and Broccoli was flavorful and cooked just right. The shrimp was done and the broccoli was slightly crisp but warm. I am usually very satisfied and happy with Kobe. The food is freshly prepared and always yummy. They offer a drive thru which is so helpful. The only thing holding back from leaving a 5 Star review is the need to constantly defend the staff as being unfriendly. They are extremely matter of fact. I have eaten here very often so I know to have my order ready if I'm calling one in and to not expect banter from the staff when dining in. It's a cultural thing and nothing personal, I'm sure. All that being said, the restaurant is reasonably clean. The staff is fast and efficient and the food is served quickly. I don't eat sushi so I can't recommend it but I can recommend the teriyaki and/or hibachi chicken, shrimp, or steak with rice or soba noodles. The crab pillows are basically a crab Rangoon and they are very crunchy and yummy. They have really good southern sweet tea. Give them a try! read more

Kobe Express, is a small new sushi and habachi restaurant. I do admit, it's a bit concerning to eat at a sushi joint in a Native American town, although they have two Japanese sushi chefs slicing up the fish. Unfortunately, one day when we arrived for lunch, not one of the two sushi chefs were in, therefore sushi was not available. What?? How does neither sushi chef show up to work? Basically that day, it was just a hibachi restaurant. Elsewhere we went... We've only had the sushi, soups, and appetizers the few times we went to Kobe. The prices are fair. The sushi is good enough. They do go heavy on their spicy mayo and sauces, so if you want otherwise, make sure you specify, or you may be disappointed. My favorite roll was the Paradise Roll, especially with the soy paper. Runners up after that would be the Volcano Roll and the Red Dragon Roll. Make sure with the Paradise Roll, and most definitely the Volcano Roll, that you ask for them to ease up on the sauces! Really any mention of sauce on the menu, you should tell them to take it easy. read more
