After hosting Christmas lunch for the family, we had nothing in the tank for making dinner tonight so I flipped a coin between Sushi and Indian food. Service was decent, the food was... odd. We ordered several rolls along with some sushi and then some lo mein, and a chicken tempura roll for the kid. 3 of our rolls were based on "spicy tuna" -- which you think should be a pretty safe order for as good as sushi normally is around here. But no. I'm still convinced this was 100% canned tuna. Disgusting. The chicken tempura roll we got for the kid was also undercooked, the batter wasn't crispy and was very off putting. My husband and I visited Koto for the first time on Thursday. We were excited to see that their menu has tons of vegetarian options for my husband. We had the avocado salad, vegetarian Gyoza, and each got two rolls. Hubs got the Sweet potato tempura roll and a vegetable roll. I got the avocado roll and the chicken tempura roll. My husband loved everything he tried, and I thought their chicken tempura was the best I've ever had. The place was quiet, clean, excellent staff and quick service. One of the best prawn & vegetable tempura meals I've had in a long time! The vegetables & prawns were done exactly the way I like them. The tempura was crunchy, the vegetables & prawns were cooked through but not over done, and they were NOT greasy. The only part of the meal I wouldn't recommend was the salad dressing. It was just weird. The fried rice was excellent! The other people at my table had sushi that they said was super, while the other said the teriyaki shrimp bento bowl was wonderful. Never been here before but had heard good things about their lunch combos. On this beautiful Saturday we decided that today was the day. The entrance is pretty grand and we smelled not only food, but cleaner from freely mopped floors. We were promptly seated and got our drink order in right away. Thr waitress was kind and offered us the amount of time we needed to go over the menu. We ordered 3 roll combos ($14) that included both miso soup as well as a small salad. The rolls (eel avocado, shrimp tempura, Alaska) were large and fresh. The rice was perfect and I was satisfied with the whole picture. The platters were glass and made the presentation even more appealing. We will certainly come back another time to enjoy more great food. read more

The tempura fried cheesecake was interesting, but not something I would order again. Warm, gooey cheesecake just isn't my thing, I guess. Two rolls and dessert via grubhub was $40! The shrimp was over cooked as over cooked steak and tasted reheated, vegetables with the exception of the brocolli was mushy, mixed rice was exceptable. California roll was delicious. I ordered the mango madness sushi to go and their were multiple hard pieces in my food wich I assume is crab that they didn't take apart. The pieces were as hard as platice and definitely not ment to be in sushi and they need to do a better job at that. Will not be going again. They also have multiple health violations. FOOD POISONED first impression was ok. the host seemed nice but didn't say anything to us when he sat us. Our waitress didn't know english very well but you can be nice to people and not speak their language. The little plates on the table had dried food on them. The sushi was bland. the roll that i got food poisoning from was the shrimp avocado roll. i was in the bathroom all night throwing up. i thought i had just caught the sickness that was going around but the throwing up and diarrhea stopped in two days and i felt completely fine. then i remembered i was the only one out of me and my friend who had eaten the shrimp avocado roll. First visit, Friday evening, somewhat busy, we did not do the Hibachi. Egg rolls were some of the best we've ever tasted. Fried perfectly, not too greasy and flavored perfectly. The chicken Tom Yum soup was had a perfect balance flavors and spice. If you're not used to spicy food it will "mildly hit you". Trex roll and pink lady roll were amazing. T. rex had a nice fried crunch on the outside, the sauce was delicious. The pink lady although raw was delicious as well. Chicken fried rice was different but delicious. Not as greasy as what you'd find at your local Chinese take out location and maybe not as flavorful but the flavors it had were a perfect balance as well. Server was rushed at times but attentive. This is probably more of a Japanese restaurant than anything else, and for that reason, stick to the Japanese dishes. We got the general tsos chicken, it tasted like Buffalo sauce and ketchup, I do not recommend. The sushi is average, certainly not the best, but not the worst. Worst Sushi Ever Tempura shrimp was harder than a rock - I asked to get something else - they gave me a bowl of fried rice - had about a pound of pepper on the rice.... Actually really great! Went at lunch time and it was very clear. Quiet, calm place with kind workers. Take our toddler and baby. Cook asked if our toddler was afraid of the fire and didn't do it because she is. He made a special effort to keep her entertained along with us. Ok.... Here goes. I'd say that my experience at Koto was a perfect storm of bad food and service. It's hard to know where exactly to start. I'll just go through it all for you. We made a reservation for a hibachi table but when we arrived they had no hibachi tables available. We waited awhile and they offered a round table in the corner. It was sunset so half the table went blind from the sun. The restaurant was filled with smoke so we all left smelling like dinner. The salad was dunked in dressing and the soup was ok but only had two slices of mushroom in it. The leafs of lettuce were huge so please cut them smaller. The server kept reaching over the table the whole time she came by. It's a circle. Go around. At one point she refilled a water and spilled it all over the table. She didn't bother to clean it up. So then there was the food, so disappointing. It was not good. My shrimp was way over cooked and super tough. My steak was also overcooked and tough. I'm guessing that they left it under the heat lamps. The noodles were oily and had too much sauce. The veggies were over cooked as well. The whole experience was awful and the bill had the tip added in. I left smelling like smoke and filled with nasty food and disappointment. The meal also sent several people to the bathroom for a fitting ending to a crappy dinner. read more

Ordered the shumai, also. Not a fan, personally, but tried them. Decent. I got the shrimp noodles for my entree. It's a PLATE FULL of noodles and a handful of shrimp. Tasty, but would've liked more pieces of shrimp. It was quite busy. A family of four sat next to us. The family needed a high chair, which was placed in between our tables which made it inconvenient for my friend to get out to use the restroom and to get out when we left. Greeted when we walked in, sat real quick by a gentleman. Then our server came and she was very nice and checked up on us frequently. The sushi here is very good! I'm kind of blown away since this is south bend. It is Boston pricing though. We ordered the chicken hibachi lunch special (for the BF) and the sushi lunch for me. I also got an order of the salmon nigiri and the angry dragon roll. I got a mai tai to drink and the bf got 2 cocktails that i forgot the name of but he liked alot. This was $88 after tip --- for lunch! Whoa! I had a really good time so it's okay... they didn't have soap in the bathroom but it was very clean. My wife and I went Sunday (early evening), and WOW! We're from out of town and it was our first time going. Great experience overall. Wasn't crowded at all, sushi was amazing, and the wait staff tuned in the NFL game for us. Will definitely return next time we're in town. Koto's from afar looks like a very nice Asian restaurant. It still has a resemblance of a nice place, but has seem to lack its luster. It was odd the host greeted us with short sleeve shirt and sport shorts with the flip flops to boot. Just kind of odd off the get go. The sushi was okay at best. We sampled 5 rolls, 1 was good, 3 were okay, and 1 was almost inedible. Which would be fine if the price reflected. It did not. Red wine for the girlfriend, beer for me, and 5 rolls with tip was a $100 dinner. I absolutely do not mind paying good money for good sushi. I do not like paying good money for bad sushi, so for those reasons I think we'll avoid this place in the future. At least until they do something with this menu. read more

I travel for work and finding a new place to eat where I feel comfortable is important to me. I have never had a meal here that was less than perfect. I've never had to wait to be seated. The food has been consistently wonderful and the wait staff is professional and prompt. After ordering, food arrives very quickly. The music playing isn't so loud to be intrusive but is soothing. I never feel rushed to order or to leave. I will continue making this place my special treat each week to myself. It never disappoints! read more

I was severely disappointed in my experience this evening. We called to make reservations; however, when we arrived, we were informed that they booked us for a regular table and not hibachi. No big deal... extra 30 minute wait, but mistakes happen... while waiting, I began to sweat... now I understand that a hibachi restaurant could possibly have more heat than normal restaurants; however, this was ridiculous...we sweated the ENTIRE evening. Now with our hydrating liquid rolling out of our bodies, you would expect that they would be aware of the need to keep their guests hydrated, right?? Nope. I had to wave across the dining room twice at our waitress to get her to refill my drink, and both times she failed to bring a refill for my child. The third time, I had to stand up and walk over to the service station to gain the attention of a server and ask for a refill. Now, let's move on to the chef, food, and dinner service...We ordered two appetizers, the Koto for Two (the most expensive dinner choice on the menu), and an extra order of shrimp. You would think that would maybe garner a little "extra"' in the customer service department...nope. The chef's performance, communication, and cooking flare was all lack luster. He maybe spoke 5-10 words to the entire table the entire evening other than confirming our food orders. He did very few "tricks", did not explain what he was cooking, made no jokes, and did not engage my kids at all. He seemed utterly confused when I asked him to split our KOTO FOR TWO between my two kids and me, and simply put no food on one of my child's plate, making me redistribute each course between my two kids (maybe he thought my one child wasn't hungry??)? It took FOREVER to get the bill, although, the receipt was brought quickly. I will say the food was VERY tasty. Loved the soft-shell crab appetizer. Loved the scallops/lobster tail/shrimp. The two dipping sauces were VERY tasty! I preferred this to the other Japanese Steakhouse on Grape Road (Yoko Hanna??). However, the poor service and uncomfortable environment would cause me to have serious reservations about booking here again. read more
