The veggie fried rice was delicious. The rainbow sushi roll was not great. The entertainment was excellent! The guy running our grill was funny & personable. Our waitress was not helpful. She gave me a hard time about ordering from "the kitchen" as opposed to the grill. Finally, I said "am I not allowed to order sushi because I'm seated at the grill?" I was with a large group and had prelooked at the menu so I was prepared; the waitress gave me a hard time about my order, had me confused and made me look stupid in front of my co-workers. ‍ I would return for the entertainment but would hope for a different server. Soho must be an abbreviation for "So Horrible". We had reservations for 630p. It was to be my 50th birthday dinner. I had been waiting all week for this meal. We arrived at 620p and did not get seated in the dining room until 640p. I have worked in restaurants in the past. They were busy. I understand being in the weeds. We weren't upset by that. Here are the details so you can avoid disappointment at this terrible place: 1. The table next to us was sat not long after we were put at our table 2. We were given three menus; there were four of us (and before you get all uppity there were STACKS of menus at the host station) 3. The table next to us had a waitress pretty much immediately and got their water/drinks. They, apparently, were not wearing their Deathly Hallows invisibility cloaks as we were. 4. They got their salad/soup 5. At 7pm someone brought us water. NOT our waitress. Probably some kind other-tabler who took pity on us. 6. 712pm our waitress finally came out to get our order and said, "I am so sorry, I'm the only waitress in the dining room." This was not even subjectively true. The table next to us had a completely different server. Different body shape, hair color, skin color, facial structure...everything. As did the other two waitpersons we witnessed at the other end of the dining room. I'm not always the quickest dude, but I can certainly tell when humans look different. Kind of one of those basic kindergarten fundamental skills we're all taught. So, she lied to us. 7. At 720p we finally received our drinks. 40 MINUTES AFTER BEING SEATED. No sushi, no salad, no soup. No opening table basics. The table next to us? Yes, they had their entrees. And there were more of them. Their food was definitely delivered by a person dressed like our waitress, but still definitely NOT our waitress. It was other waitress. Perhaps an otherworldly poltergeist waitress bringing food to the living that our waitress couldn't, see? Oh my God I'm like the kid in Sixth Sense. I see dead waitresses. 8. We got up to leave, and I waited to speak to the hostess. I told her that I was upset about the service, she smiled and asked if I wanted a seat. I pointed at the table and told her that I had, in fact, been seated nearly an hour ago and the waitress lied to us and brought us our drinks 40 min after we'd been seated. I pointed to the table where we were (this is only about a minute and a half after we got up) and they were already cleaning it off. The staff didn't come out to ask if anything was wrong. Body wasn't even cold baby. Just clear it off and move on to the next customer they will disappoint. 9. When I explained what happened she laughed and said, "Sorry". That was it. No genuine contrition. No, "Hey, can we make this right? Sorry we crapped on your 50th birthday dinner, the only one you'll get in a lifetime." Nope. Just laughter and nothing. I'm a very patient man. Life happens. People screw up. I get it. But when that waitress lied to us when empirical evidence existed in our faces to the contradiction of her assertion, it was just too much. We've spent thousands there over the years celebrating big moments. Never again. We'll go to Hana Yori in Mishawaka from here on out. I'll never get that birthday back and Soho will never get any more of our family's money. read more

Highly disappointed in the service and experience. I made a reservation for hibachi for my daughter's birthday. There were 10 of us. We didn't it get seated until nearly 7pm but our reservation was for 630. We then were not greeted for another 15 minutes. No drink order. Nothing. They all knew it was a special occasion as I told them and we brought in a cake. The cook came and cooked and entire meal for the table opposite us before we got anything. Once the cook started he never warned us about the fire. My daughter was so excited for it and missed it and I missed taking a picture as he never greeted us. But we heard him tell the other table 'here it comes'. The Miso soup was bland. The salad was WET with water. Most of our party got hibachi but three of the ordered offf the menu. The cook has finished making our entire meal before the other guests were served. I had to get up twice to go check in their food because it felt so rude to be eating in front of them fo so long. We were invited to a birthday party at Soho so we could not say no. We had visited a couple of times a year since they opened but have not been there in a few years due to similar experiences as I am writing about. Our friends booked the Teppanyaki room so we had a dozen of us being entertained by our chef. After asking the server questions about the types of tuna served (AHI does not cut it for me) we started with Edamame and a Rainbow Sashimi appetizer. The Edamame, something that is hard to complain about, was cold and they used table salt instead of sea or rock salt. The Rainbow Sashimi was advertised as sashimi with cucumber and ponzu sauce. It came wrapped in cucumber in a pool of ponzu. It was served with Yellowfin, Salmon, white tuna, and Yellow Tail. The Yellow Fin was very fishy and the color and texture screamed frozen. The white tuna (what is white tuna any way) was very oily. I don't think it was albacore but I did not ask. The Yellow Tail was the best of the four with the salmon being slimy and fishy. After the appetizer I decided to stay away from the fish so I went with Filet Mingnon and Scallops. The chef was very entertaining and I enjoyed guzzling sake from a mustard bottle. The steak was tender and well flavored but the scallops (ocean) were cut so thin that they tasted like salt bombs after they were seasoned with the grill soy. My wife, not wanting Teppanyaki, went with Sushi Maki. She ordered the Caterpillar Roll which was cucumber and eel topped with avocado, eel sauce and sesame seeds. The middle was mostly cucumber with very thin strip of eel. She also ordered the Angry Dragon, it was shrimp Tempura and cucumber topped with avocado, eel, eel sauce and spicy sauce (notice she stayed away from the raw fish). Strangely there was much more eel on this roll then the eel roll. She was not overly excited about either roll. My favorite thing of the night was the Sake Sangria. It was Sake, Cabernet Sauvignon, with juice and grenadine. The Cab really carried through. As far as service, it seemed that once I questioned the tuna, the server was a little put off. Our reservation was for 8, we got in at 8:20 and our chef showed up at 9:40. Even worse, they started vacuuming at 10 even though they didn't close till 11. It really made the meal enjoyable eating to the sound of a vacuum cleaner. If I was not with my friends the meal would have been cut much shorter as we would have not moved past the appetizer... the things we do for our friends. read more

Walked in the door and the place was completely packed with people waiting for the single hostess to deal with all types of issues and complaints from customers. Honestly it's pethetic how when a person calls ahead 24 hours before for a reservation for a wonderful date night out, upon arrival we let them know we are here 5 min before 830pm. The asked if we had a reservation (keep in mind it's packed) and I said yes. They then PROCEEDED to tell us we have to wait 45 effing minutes. THEN WHEN PEOPLE CANCELLED the proceeded to seat walk-ins. The management is awful. This is the funny part.... We then got our name called twice and they proceeded to try and sit us at the grill when our reservations were for dine in table. And the host proceeded to get agitated and walked us around the whole establishment just to have us sit back in the waiting area. Food was mediocre At best. Honestly McDonald's would have been a quicker and better choice... FOOD POISONING. AGAIN. My fiancé is projectile vomiting after eating here, the last two times, in a row! I was able to avoid it because I refused to eat anything here after witnessing her last bout with Soho food poisoning. We sat on the tempenyaki side... and if you've ever glanced around at the walls, and seen them dripping with oil, scum and grease, you get an immediate sense that cleanliness is not the owners' priority. Someone needs to take a Hazmat crew to this place. Another bad omen is when your grill chef has fingernails, black and grey with filth... Also alarmingly, my fiancé has shellfish allergies, and even after notifying both the server and chef, multiple times, the tray of chicken and steak still arrived mixed with shrimp, all cross contamination! This place is going to kill someone. I've had decent meals in the past, but I refuse to eat here until the department of health steps in and deems this place safe for humans. Located in the posh city of Granger Indiana just by location alone Soho connotes sophistication, class, and stellar service. Well after several times of visiting this place, I hoped (based on their popularity) that Soho would live up to their name and exceed expectations. Thus far I have visited Soho for different occasions, birthday parties etc.., and most recently a lady's night out with a large group. When I made my first visit to Soho, they were packed beyond maximum capacity with a wraparound line out the door. Usually with businesses this is a good sign, showing an establishment's favor in their local area. I like most do not enjoy overly crowded restaurants, yet regardless the most important objective is getting seated promptly, and attentive service. For my first visit unfortunately the evening got off to a bad start. When we all arrived the hostess misbooked our party for 8pm instead of 7 PM in addition to already everyone being famished. This was due to severe language barriers because half the staff is semi-bilingual with Japanese being their primary language. Once it reached 8pm my friend and I asked when we would be seated, and the hostess kept saying in 5-10mins. Well....... 5-10 mins turned into 1hour and 15mins my first visit.!!!!!!! On my most recent visit we all went during the week instead of a weekend at night being much less crowded. However that's where contrast from my last visit ended. Similar to my first visit we waited roughly 50 mins to be seated. Once we were all seated, we looked at the menu. The menu options were decent however they are ubiquitous of typical Teppanyaki/Japanese cuisine, with nothing distinguishing Soho from its competitors. Once we were ready to order ONCE MORE similar to our long wait time to be seated, our party waited an additional 30mins JUST for our orders to be taken. What I cant understand is Soho wasn't even busy that day so what was keeping the servers so consumed??? Then after ordering our food it took an additional 35 minutes for the appetizers to arrive. While waiting one of my friends both her and I were furious, and starving. She was sooooo hungry that she whipped out a bad of Keebler cookies to eat because our appetizers took so long to arrive. Ridiculous!!!!! Finally when , our appetizers arrived an additional 30-40mins later.......our chef came. He then verified everyone's order, but I was upset due to me repeatedly reminding him of my order. Then after another 40 minutes the chef concluded showing off his Teppanyaki tricks and our meals were completed. To summarize, I don't think I have ever in my life had to wait soooo long just for standard service. The quality of the food was decent (not stellar) but after roughly 3 hours of being there and the insanely long wait times I was too pissed to eat all of my entrée. My party as well as other parties that evening were flagging down servers, and many of the staff went ghost. Overall Soho offers typical Japanese food, but EVERY SINGLE time regardless of the occupancy or day of the week I've experienced severe staffing inadequacies!!! Where are the staff!!!!!!!! What takes them so long!!!!!!????? I told my friend after our last visit "Please don't host another party here ever again!!!!!!" My very strong suggestion is if you are looking for notable Teppanyaki restaurants Hona Yori, East Tokyo are improved versions of Soho offering better quality with more menu options. I personally love this restaurant, but there are definitely things they need to work on. In the past, we have had some pretty bad servers at this place and we have done the Hibachi grill and off the menu. For some reason, it seems like you get worse service when doing the grill. Today we did off the menu and had a very nice server, but she had no name tag, so I can't recognize her. Dark hair to maybe past shoulders, really cute and great disposition. I ordered the vegetable fried rice and my husband ordered the beef and shrimp fried rice and he also got the yodun noodles and I know I misspelled that. Soho has the best fried rice of any I have ever had. The noodles are also amazing and the way you know you've received great Japanese food is that when you reheat it later and it still tastes amazing. I also love their yum yum sauce. I could swim in it. ;) Anyway, the prices are somewhat overpriced, but considering the area Soho is located in (Granger) it's pretty much expected. I've been to Soho quite a bit and I have never seen the place super busy. I can only assume that it's waitstaff and pricing keeping a lot of people away because it cannot be the food. I also love that when you sit in main dining and look up, it looks like you are under the stars. It's fiber optic and it's just so comforting and relaxing. Whoever decorated that restaurant did an outstanding job! I just love the way Soho looks inside. There's a small but classy bar off to the side and it's a very clean restaurant. I would say just work on getting more servers that are attentive and I'd say lower the prices, but that's not going to happen. Lol. Our bill with a 10 dollar tip was 63 dollars. We were there at lunchtime and they don't have a lunch menu that offers smaller portions for a smaller cost. And if they do, I've never seen evidence of that. This restaurant has come back from being so-so only a few years ago. We like that it has a lovely sushi section, or a fun teppanyaki section (you can still get sushi on that side). They have big portions, excellent lunch prices, and entertaining teppanyaki chefs. *COVID UPDATE: While we were here, we saw a couple come in without masks. The hostess told us they do not enforce masks to be worn. The bartender made many drinks with his mask pulled down on his chin, so both his mouth and nose were exposed. Many patrons without masks walked out (and some back in) with inches of people waiting to be seated. We will not return to this restaurant after observing the cavalier attitude toward safety exhibited by this restaurant. It is against St Joe county regulation, and it is NOT SAFE. I've been to plenty of sushi places around the country and would have gave this 5 stars because the sushi itself is great. However, it was the environment and wait times that really ruined this for me. The 2 stars is completely based on the food quality, otherwise I would give a zero if possible. We had reservations at 6pm and had to wait to be seated 20 minutes later. Once we were seated the booth I was in had a broken / loose backboard where myself and the guy behind me kept pushing each other back and forth. It was like having a little kid on an airplane kicking your seat behind you during dinner. Part of the experience was ruined by the amount of people leaned on the railing of our table with their butts right next to us in our face at our table waiting to be seated while we eat apps. People were just piled in constantly clogging the entire front of the restaurant. Constant door draft had to put the jacket back on. I ordered a standard bowl of Miso Soup to start which took 30 minutes to get. This is usually standard delivered very quickly. The only reason it came out was because we had to ask the server where the soup was. It took around an hour and 20 minutes to get 3 rolls of sushi for the table. I have never seen a wait time like that in my life. They told me "it was a busy night" as the excuse, but have been to plenty establishments that could handle capacity no problem in the past and see this place as unprepared, staffed or equipped to handle even a mediocre load of people for service. I place this lack of performance on management and their inability to get their establishment run properly and should seriously look at their experience from a customers perspective. Really simple stuff to actually make your restaurant a pleasurable experience and avoid reviews like this. Finally, we were here for a birthday and we're going to have cake and a desert but we're handed a check mid meal and felt rushed out at this point. By this time it was time to throw in the towel on experience and look for another place. Hopefully management reads and can improve. read more

We had a 6:30 reservation, which we got sat promptly at. The waitress was very slow with getting our drinks. When the drinks finally arrived, 15 minutes after we were sat, she took our order. 3 tables were sat after us; one 20 minutes later, one 40 minutes later and another 45 minutes later. All of them got their food before us. I'm not one to complain to a manager but after sitting there over an hour and seeing all these other tables get served, we felt it was necessary. The manager did nothing but make excuses. The hibachi cook hurried through cooking our food that some people got undercooked shrimp. We told the waitress that it was my daughter's birthday and all she did was bring out the dessert sat it down and walked away, to top it off she added the undeserving gratuity to the bill. OMG so frickin' good! I LOVED this place, the experience, the food, the service, all excellent! It's a little pricey, but worth it in terms of quantity of food and quality of experience you're getting. My boyfriend and I went to Soho Japanese Bistro not expecting much, but as soon as we sat down, we were having a blast! We ordered edamame and sake, which were both excellent. As our main course we got the lobster, steak and shrimp for two. As soon as the cook came out, everyone sitting around our table was having an awesome time. He confirmed with all of us what we wanted, cleaned his grill, and then became a total show star! He started squirting sake into our mouths, throwing broccoli into the air for us to catch with our mouths and made a big show of the flames on his grill. Super fun! The food turned out delicious too! Usually, at places like this, I don't expect the shrimp and lobster to be top notch, BUT MAN they were incredible! We go here every year on our anniversary. We used to love it. Beautiful place, great decor, waterfall and fish pond. Separate sushi bar and grill and restaurant areas. Great food at a decent price and the sushi always looks amazing, is fresh and delicious. The service in years past was also very good. Attentive waiters, friendly sushi chefs and great hostesses. Even sometimes a free dessert and our waiters always talked to and interacted with us. This year the service has taken a nose dive. We waited over 5 minutes before the hostess even acknowledged us. Then they sat us in the restaurant area and lit our candle which was nice. Our waitress came and took our sushi order. We asked her for edamame with a side of wasabi to come first with a hot sake to come with our meal. She brought the warm but not hot sake to the table with the edamame and no wasabi. We had to ask for more soy sauce a couple times also after having to track her down because she was no where to be seen. She spilled water on the table and left it, never came to check on us while we ate and wasn't very friendly at all. While we sat there we saw other diners have long waits at the hostess station and often with no hostess to be seen. Then a Pizza Hut guy came and delivered 2 hot pizzas to the hostess desk. We left after one course and didn't even order dessert. It was VERY disappointing for our one special meal. We were hungry for sushi and remembered seeing a nice looking sushi / teppan grill place right by our grocery store (Martin's), so we strolled into Soho and my first impression was WOW. It's flagstone brick walls, dark wood work, twinkling ceiling, craft beer display, elegant teppan rooms and sword flanked sushi bar make this space both sexy and upscale. We opted for a table under the twinkling faux night sky and awaited our server. Unfortunately we waited a long time (at least 5 minutes) for her to even acknowledge us and it goes downhill from there. We'd ordered a cold sake, an unfiltered one and she looked at us like we we're speaking another language. I further clarified by saying the name and the price ($13) and again the look of utter confusion on her face was apparent. Roughly 10 minutes later we received our sake. So far... not impressed. She dropped off our sake and walked away... about 5 minutes later she returned and we'd both decided to order the sashimi lunch. She then asked us what kind of sushi we'd like, we had to pick... which was in complete contrast from the menu. The sushi lunch you could pick, but we'd ordered the sashimi, which was "chef's choice"... she rolled her eyes at her own mistake and walked away. The whole experience so far... was strange. Nearly 40 minutes later... we finally received our sashimi (10 pieces each of ahi tuna, yellowtail, salmon & albacore. The sushi... was excellent and truly the ONLY reason I gave the restaurant 4 stars. Our service hovered around a 1-2, which is sad. I cannot stress enough how high quality their fish is... served cold, displayed nicely and with reasonable prices. Our sashimi lunches we're $11 each and included a miso soup or salad as well. We will go back to Soho... and hopefully have better service the next time around. I'd like to try their teppan grill and without question will enjoy their sushi once again. read more

Went there for the first time since I heard they have good food,plus i am a fan of japaneese cuisine. first off, i was disappointed from the moment i walked in there the receptionist just asked how many people were in our group and proceeded to bring us to the habachi table but never asked if we wanted to, kinda sterotyping on my end just because were mexicans so i told her no we are not eating there. She looked irritated and proceeded to bring us to a table. Second the waitress assigned to us looked irritated from the moment she started asking for orders, we can all see it in her RBF(resting B. Face). We told her it was our first time there but she couldn't care less, from my experience eating anywhere when i say it's my first time most waiters will suggest some food to try.. She left us and said she would come back, didn't even ask if we wanted to try some appetizers first. From the moment we sat in the dinning table we felt like we were not really welcome there and we felt like we were being questioned "why we are sitting there and not the Hibachi area". I looked around and most servers looked like they are about to spoon feed everyone on their table and even hearing other waiter suggesting food and drinks to other customers, They even gave us a "chipped" bowl for the udon.Third, the dining area was so dark that taking photos was more of a struggle than a memorable experience. And lastly the food was just okay and not that great, there were mostly food that used the name but did not lived up to expectation. The udon was soggy and it's broth tasted like instant noodle. The sushi was good but i bet Martin's sushi tasted better, the wasabi was not even real wasabi and should have been a bit spicy. The steak was dry and they even tried to make up for the dryness with the sauce that tasted like oyster sauce with water. The fried rice was so dry and lacked taste in it seems like they forgot to add salt to it. Overall it was a terrible experience and terrible choice to go there. I believe it doesn't matter how good the place looks like if tha staff themselves treats you based on race and looks. If there was a dress code to be treated with respect then they probably should put that sign outside their establishment to make up how terrible their food is.
