Walking into this restaurant is like walking into a time capsule. The walls are covered with photos of happy customers from years ago, making it obvious this used to be the place to eat. Unfortunately, that seems to be a distant memory. The memorabilia is covered in dust, the parking lot is always empty, and in the three times I've been here since moving to the area, I've either been the only customer or the only table in the restaurant. The frustrating part is that the food is actually good, which is why I kept giving this place another chance. I originally thought the owner was just a little strict, but with each visit she became more rude and dismissive. This visit was the last straw. I spent around $40 on my meal, and one of the items I ordered was the tempura shrimp basket with assorted vegetables. Instead, I received shrimp and five pieces of potato. I've ordered this exact dish before, and it came with a variety of vegetables. When I politely asked about it, the owner brought the chef out, and instead of fixing the mistake, they both repeatedly insisted that it has always been served with only shrimp and potatoes--as if repeating it enough would somehow change reality. Their own menu clearly says "assorted vegetables." I wasn't asking for anything extra. I was asking for exactly what I ordered and what was advertised on the menu. The most disappointing part? I was literally the only customer in the restaurant. If there's ever a time to go above and beyond for someone, it's when you have one table to take care of. Instead, they chose to argue with me over their own menu, then went back to the front of the restaurant to sit together and watch TV. Good food can bring people in once. Good customer service is what brings them back. Sadly, this restaurant seems to have forgotten that. I didn't know what to expect when I walked in, but opening the door was like entering a comforting and humble bapjip in the heart of Seoul. The walls and ceilings were decorated with Korean money, cultural items and also Irish pride, given its proximity to Notre Dame. I ordered the Goon Mandu, which arrived steaming hot and perfectly crispy. The best Yookgaejang that I've EVER eaten came next. Perfectly seasoned broth filled with beef, eggs, sprouts and onions. If that wasn't enough the generous banchan tasted incredibly authentic and was clearly homemade- confirmed by the server, who was responsive and quick. Outstanding Korean... First time downtown at Electric Works and Seoul Garden... Simply put, it was outstanding Korean food - Very authentic. We've traveled to Korea multiple times for work, and the food here was very close to what you get abroad. We got the bibimbap, bulgogi, and dumplings (we ordered way too much food), and it was all insanely good. If you don't prefer spicy, I'd suggest getting no spice because even the mild/medium had a big kick. The only con was it took about 15+ minutes to get our food, but they just opened this location and I presume are working out the kinks - No big deal, just get a flight of ciders from Kekionga while you wait. read more

The interior was filled with smoke due to insufficient ventilation, and it's hard to get the attention of anyone when trying to pay. Seoul Garden is a joy! When I pulled up, there were a bunch of Korean aunties chatting in the driveway, soaking up the sun on the patio, holding their cell phones up, saying hello to me. I felt instantly filled with happiness. The beef galbi is to die for. The sushi is all fresh. The bulgolgi and katsudon are simple yet elegant. Even if you have no idea what a dish is when you order it, your mouth will be rewarded anyways. No other restaurant is so forgiving with its menu (and Seoul Garden's menu is several pages long). I struggle to accept that I may never get to every dish on the menu. I came back to Seoul Garden twice within the week that I first discovered it. I will be returning many times more to thrill my taste buds. Covid measures: they will seat you at a distance. I've been coming to this place for years! It's a small hole in the wall place that has some of the best sushi in the area. The sushi rolls are always fresh and the free banchen snacks that are brought before meal are homemade and to die for! When I order take out, the owner will sometimes throw in different extra sushi rolls or items which is very generous. I've had sushi at other restaurants, but the freshness and variety are my favorite in the area. There are other delicious Korean dishes as well. read more

The food was well seasoned and the the 갈비 (gal-bi) was not too touch or chewy. I also had the 대구매운탕 (spicy cod fish stew), which could have been a bit saltier, but it hit to spot for Korean soups. The beef bibimbop was absolutely horrible, I don't know how you can mess up bibimbop but they did here. What a wonderful little treasure. We stopped in after a matinee at the Morris. The banchan (side dishes) were excellent. Favorites were the kimchi, mushrooms and fishcake. My husband's bulgogi was wonderfully seasoned and incredibly tender. I had the stone pot bibimbop. It stayed sizzling and hot almost the entire time I ate it. I used my spoon to make sure I could scoop up all the crispy bits. We also indulged on a spicy tuna roll which was good. Be patient with the service because they are working their tail off. Any wait when ordering will be worth it!!!! Remember be nice. (Saw a guy walk out who was very mean to an elderly worker. It made me mad). Ambiance is eclectic but endearing. It took a while to order because we needed to review the menu, but we ended up with the following: - haemul jeong - bulgogi - Futo Maki We ordered the Jeong before placing our main order, so it came out first... the jeong way okay, the batter to veggie/seafood mix was like 5:1, it does fill you up and it's large, enough for 6+ people to share - too much for two people :) But the taste wasn't bad, but not work $10 for the dish. - Bulgogi - decent for Midwest... they used a lot of ginger and you can see the chunks of the ginger's in the dish; too Americanized. Futo maki - basically Korean Kimbop flipped inside out :) Not bad. Banchans - decent... radish kimchi, napa kimchi, odeng, seaweed, spinach, and soybean sprouts. Not the best, but decent to have with the meals. Overall, lot of food offering - both Japanese and Korean (typical of all Seoul Garden locations!!). I like how they have the grills with fans, something new at this location. Paying our bill took long time, even when I called the owner as they walked by, she walked by me... then after 10 minutes, my friend yelled "excuse me" to the owner and then our bill was taken care of. Very good local Korean food. There are many options available on the menu. They not only have cooked food but also raw food to cook on the grill like good ole' Korean BBQ as well as sushi and soup. Being from Southern California I've been spoiled with good Korean food and good Korean BBQ. Seoul Garden measures up, if not, exceeds many of those Southern Californian hot spots. Service is nice and fast. This was my second time here and when I was here the first time, my girlfriend, who was born and raised in Korea, remarked that it tastes just like traditional Korean food. We went in for a late lunch on a Saturday and were the only two people at the restaurant. The service was attentive and friendly, and the food came out fast. However... The atmosphere was ok, filled with small trinkets found at garage sales and Korean writing all over the walls. The side dishes were disappointing to say the least. Most were dry, bland, and incomparable those at more authentic Korean restaurants. The Goon Man Doo was probably the best part of our lunch -- tenderly fried and filled with beef and chopped vegetables. The Bulgogi Bibimbap was nothing to write home about, and I would not recommend. Not warm enough for my taste, though the bulgogi was marinated pretty well. The two things (one entree and one appetizer) were all we ordered, and the bill with tip was over $30. I will not be back just because the price does not justify the food. Maybe the BBQ and/or Japanese food will be better than what we had, but you'd probably be better off going to Sunny's Korean Restaurant in South Bend. read more
