    Complimentary fried wontons
    Desi-Rae S.

Kowloon is where you want to eat when you're in the mood for traditional American/Chinese cuisine. I discovered this hole-in-the wall about a year ago. I went back this weekend as I was in the area. This place reminds me of the Chinese restaurants from my childhood. The nostalgic leather booths, the half-hearted Asia décor, the flat dark carpeted floor and that magic aroma you can only get from an old-school Chinese place. (I call it yummy magic - you know the tantalizing aroma I'm talkin' about.) Outside it looks unassuming, located in the corner of a tiny Bethel mini-mall, it's larger than it looks. Inside there are lots of seats, a full bar and of course an endless menu of everything traditional American/Chinese cuisine has to offer. Pu-pu platters, soups, chow miens, lo miens, rangoons, teriyaki, egg rolls, fried rice, daily and lunch specials, it's hard to decide! Expect hot tea and ice water to arrive as soon as you're seated. But don't fill up on the bottomless complimentary fried wontons with duck sauce. Save room because the portions are generous, fresh, and pipping hot. I was in a party of 4, the restaurant was moderately busy and our food came out fast much to our pleasant surprise. The House Special Fried Rice is a favorite of mine, loaded with veggies, shrimp, ham, and pork. I've been eating my left-overs for 2 days now! The staff are friendly, courteous, and deliver top-notch service. You can tell this is where the locals go for their favorite Chinese. It's good for groups, there is free Wi-Fi so parking your buns in a booth with your laptop for a working lunch is no problem. There are a couple of TV's so you can catch the game. Don't like what's on? Ask, and you get the remote! Bathrooms are single stalls by gender. The ladies room was clean and stocked (I can't speak to the men's room). Parking is crowded as the lot is small, we parked out back, it appears as though parting across the street and on the street is OK but I'm not 100% sure on that. I get to Bethel once a year and a stop at Kowloon on a Sunday afternoon is quickly becoming a family tradition of mine.

It was my first time here, and I am in Bethel while doing organic farming. I'm from Maryland and had been craving Chinese food for the longest, so I luckily found a place. I was greeted by an extremely warm and hospitable staff! They seated me right away and gave me an ice cold water. One of the great things was that a complimentary appetizer of wonton crisps and a sweet pineapple sauce was given free of charge. Which was breathtakingly delicious! I ordered Generals Chicken as my main dish & It tasted absolutely phenomenal!!! They ask your for your spice preference as well. The chicken had sweet and spicy hints, and the fried rice was on the darker side and had a smooth taste.. the menu has a very wide variety & best believe that I will be back again very soon!

Their sweet and sour chicken fingers (with an amazing red sauce), spare ribs, and beef teriyaki are usually great. The teriyaki has been bland lately though, like they don't marinate it nearly as well as they used to in years past. Their red sweet and sour sauce is amazing and the duck sauce is pretty good too. The crab rangoons are nice and crunchy. I haven't ventured much from these items since I like them so much, but it sounds like there are some issues with having consistent quality at times with them looking at some other reviews. If they can keep the food consistent, these dishes are great. My favorite Chinese food by far for these items when done right. Service was fast, server that took our call and brought our order was very polite. Gave some feedback about the teriyaki not being as flavorful as it usually is and they were very receptive and apologetic. Offered a credit but I declined. The restaurant physical space could use an update inside and out.

The sushi bar was wonderful, the seaweed salad was the best! Fresh and presented nicely. The soups were hot and sour, egg drop and won ton. I tried the egg drop which was light and tasty. We did arrive close to 3 pm and I felt some of the food was a bit chewy from time. Variety was awesome. The tea we had to drink was gold peak green tea which I buy by bottles and here it's fountain! My hubby left for the men's room and the gentlemen came to talk. I mentioned it was his birthday and this is what he wanted! I went back only once trying most dishes. We rested and were going to get dessert. Well the 2 gentlemen came out with their dessert cakes and treats to make a festive bd dessert. They sang happy birthday to him which was a classy act. I left a substantial tip as I felt our meals were special! Bathrooms were clean as was the entire building. We will return to eat again, but trying to hit there closer to noon for fresh hot food! I highly recommend ZHANG's and I hope you will too. Funny, the building they are in is an old Burger King but nothing like it inside !!!

**This is an update from previous review left 2 years ago**…read more This is my first time back to this establishment since I wrote a 1-star review nearly 2.5 years ago. I have to say that their food quality and quantity have gotten MUCH better. It's still americanized Chinese food so to expect 5-star dining is an unrealistic expectation. The staff is friendlier and understanding of food allergies. The to-go dishes are taller allowing for more food to be stored. My family and I ordered the General Tso combination plate, the steak low mein combo and the Szechuan chicken combo. Additionally we ordered crab Rangoons and egg rolls. The rice was cooked well, my wife thought it was a bit crunchy for her, the general tso chicken was cooked well and the flavor was good. My son did not complain about his Szechuan chicken, oh and my daughter had the sweet and sour chicken. My wife said the crab Rangoons were a bit on the sweeter side, but they satisfy the craving for them. My daughter loved the egg roll and she typically does not like egg rolls. Overall, I am impressed with the improvement in quality, appearance and quantity. They are still not my local go-to, but if we are looking for something quick and don't want to travel 35 minutes to our favorite Chinese restaurant, they have earned my business back after losing it 2.5 years ago.
