Walked into this bike shop unannounced and received amazing service. I needed a brake kit installed on my bike. I met the owner of Miguel who was knowledgeable and friendly. I had brought the brake kit that was specifically made for my bike. I left my bike as well as the brake kit and Miguel said I could come back later that day and pick it up. He said it would be an hour. Shortly after I left, Miguel called to tell me that there were some parts missing in the brake kit. We agreed that I would call the manufacturer and see if they could send me the missing parts from the Kit. I agreed to get back to Miguel once I spoke with the manufacturer. An hour went by and I received a second call from Miguel. He said he was able to put the brake kit on and piece it together with American ingenuity and some spare parts. This level of service was above and beyond. I was able to pick up my bike and it works beautifully. I could tell Miguel really cared about his customers. He got me back on my bike fast and made sure that it was properly repaired. He also charged a very reasonable price. I highly recommend Krakatoa Bike shop and Miguel if you're looking to get your bike repaired, want an honest opinion when looking to buy a bike, or need any kind of bike accessory. I was in the market for a new gravel Bike. I have experience with Mountain Bikes but I am very new to road/gravel bikes. I had little to no knowledge or experience with road and gravel bikes. That being said I do research. I read reviews I called lots of shops and I try to learn as much as I can before buying something. However, nothing can beat having human to human interaction with a knowledgable salesperson and technician like Miguel. Krakatoa bikes was one of the many shops I called. One of the main differences was Miguel took the time to ask me questions, and provide solid guidance. i could tell he really cared about understanding my needs. He must have talked to me for 10 minutes the first time I called, knowing in this COVID-19 situation bike shops are short-staffed and demand is very high. I actually live 45 minutes away, but Miguel was so great I decided to come out and sit on a few bikes as he also was one of the only ones to have a Salsa Gravel bike in my size just to get a feel for. I ended up going with a Salsa Warbird that Miguel got and assembled in under 2 days. Miguel gave me an amazing price on top of it all. I was just amazed at the turnout and the build is quality. Best bike store I've ever been to in terms of attention and care to the customer's needs. You're always dealing with Miguel, the owner. He knows his stuff and he's super friendly and professional. He set me up with a great Norco mountain bike a couple years ago, and I've loved it! Recently, I went in with a stupid, simple repair task where I'd gotten stymied. Miguel asked me to show him what I was doing. He patiently watched me and quickly explained what I was doing wrong. He walked me through the whole process, so I learned! I came to Krakatoa bikes a couple of years ago on a recommendation from a friend. I got hooked up with new suspension for a great price and he has been my go to guy for anything bike ever since. I am a firm believer in supporting local businesses with great service and quality products, and Krakatoa bikes delivers. The owner from day 1 has treated me like family. He has always been fair, honest and friendly. He fixed up my 1996 Marin Palisades Trail MTB and brought it back to life when I thought it was hopeless. I've used it now in back to back Dawn to Dusk adventure races and it's been solid and dependable thanks to Krakatoa. When I saw the one nasty review on here I was honestly baffled. If you got a problem with someone or their business: why wouldn't you try to just work it out face to face? Why bottle it up and explode later on the internet? These blog troll crusaders hiding behind the power of a keyboard and safety of a computer screen drive me nuts... If people had the wherewithal to just talk to the people they have problems with and solve it right then and there, then there wouldn't be a problem. I just ordered a brand new bike from Krakatoa, and the owner helped me pick out the best brand, size and value for what was in my price range and for my type of riding. I am so stoked! Not sure if this is an actual bike shop or a front for selling something else. Stopped by a couple of times, but the shop was closed, yet hours stated said that they were open? Finally, when they were open I was meet by a dude with a super weird vibe. I'm guessing he was super baked, couldn't look me in the eye when I asked some bike questions. How this is a valid bike shop is beyond me. I like to support local small business when I can, but this experience left me scratching my head. read more

Someone removed my review because of a conflict of interest. Now, how could a costumer have a conflict of interest reporting his experience at a shop? I've never worked in any bike shop, and know no bike shop owners personally. The only explanation is that the owner of this business is so dishonest that he even has negative reviews removed by making bogus claims. No wonder there is only one 5 star review aside from mine; does he remove all the negative ones? First part of a business is whether or not the employees treat you with respect. Usually, you don't want to do business with people who are rude to you. Well, the clerk or owner was rude. That's the first issue. Second, when a business tells you they will call to check on the pricing of an item and get back to you, but never do, that again shows poor business skills, and a certain lack of respect and organization. Third, when you run a business, you should make sure your costumers are not attacked by your ill-behaved dog. People don't go in stores to have to fend off a large dog jumping all over you. Fourth, when you go into a business you don't want to be waiting while the clerk is on some personal call. And when the clerk does get off the phone, you don't want him telling you some sexist comment about the girl he was on the phone with. For all the above reasons, I can only give one star to this business. read more

I had a terrific experience working with Miguel at Krakatoa Bikes to purchase my new mountain bike. I am an intermediate rider - fire roads and single track that are not super technical - and have ridden misfit and underwhelming mountain bikes that cost around $200 all my life. I wanted a significant upgrade. I visited six different new bicycle shops in Fairfax and San Anselmo. All of the shops were quite nice and helpful however Miguel was definitely the best. He spent considerable time with me listening to what I wanted and describing options - and pointing out upgrades to consider and those to ignore. I knew a few things I wanted for sure, but a lot of the options and pros/cons I was not very informed on. Miguel was the most knowledgeable of all the shops I spoke with. He worked on pricing for me, researched prior year equivalent models and different approaches with build kits and customizations to optimize price vs feature set. I researched a lot of his advice later online and found it very well informed, and ultimately I purchased a Salsa El Mariachi. The one I wanted needed to be ordered and arrived fast. Miguel is amazing - he's a great technician and can fix just about any bike problem, and quickly, improvising if needed and getting the parts within a day or two if not at hand. He provides excellent customer service, taking care of many straightforward issues on the spot, while you wait. He also is incredibly knowledgable and gives good advice on how to take care of your bike and fix things yourself for those interested. Miguel is the most trustworthy bike master we've had the pleasure of meeting, which means we can relax and know he's got our interests at heart. We now only shop and get serviced at Krakatoa. Miguel worked with us to find the bike to meet our needs and price point, and with his core brands of Norco, Salsa and Ellsworth we had access to some of the best bikes on the market. We've bought two Norco bikes for our 14 and 10 year old boys. They and we love the bikes, and the included lifetime service is a huge bonus. Went to Krakatoa because they are listed as a service outlet for Razor electric scooters, and I had a problem with my son's. Miguel took at least 30 minutes to help troubleshoot the problem, pinpointing weak battery voltage as the likely problem. He charged me zero for his time and help. Then, when I wrote to the battery company to ask for a refund and they asked for documentation, Miguel took additional time to write out an explanation of the test and the results, which allowed me to get my money back from the battery purchase. I very much appreciate the time and effort he put in, even knowing that it wasn't going to lead to a sale for his shop. I can imagine he treats his bike customers the same way. read more

Went there with my four-year-old son to check out this small shop. The person at the desk was on the phone, chatting. There was a loose dog in shop that kept on jumping on me, and eventually it jumped on my son, knocking him over. That guy did not even get off the phone. Go there if you enjoy being ignored by the salesperson, while being harassed by an untrained dog. I'm a dog lover, but I don't expect to step in a business and have my son knocked over by a dog. read more

ALWAYS does a great job and returns it looking like new AND does it for a very reasonable price. because of Miguels excellent service and GREAT vibes we decided to get my son the BMX bike he has always wanted, through Miguel.
