I rate my experience here as a 1 star based on the following: We were referred to this business. We scheduled online with our issue and made an appointment 1 week out. When we arrived at our scheduled time, we were told that our issue could not be addressed based on our bike's seat type making access to the lift not possible. A better run business would have confirmed they have the right equipment before taking the booking. Their system allowed us to book with our bike type. An excellent business would have recognized their error, which was not waiting for a customer to walk in before declining service. A top business would have found a way to get a light bike on the lift. My 12 year old was easily able to load the bike in and out of our pickup truck. My hope is the business will see this review and improve their intake process for prospective new customers. I also hope to warn potential customers to check in and see if their e-bike can be serviced here. read more

Guess they don't want to sell bikes. Walked in on a Wednesday, place is empty except for an associate on the phone. I stand and wait. The conversation is obviously about bike related matters. I don't mind waiting. Stand there for a couple minutes and the associate won't acknowledge I'm there. No glance over to confirm I'm there waiting, no gesture that perhaps it'll be a moment or two, no "hold please" to the caller and tell me he will be with me. I just stand there. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly and charming. However their business practices left me very disappointed and I felt hoodwinked. I purchased a $3,000 bike and I was told that I could get a $900 "rebate" from Alameda county's AVA program. I was told that it is a lottery that I must enter, which I did. What the sales person failed to tell me is that the so-called rebate applies only AFTER you purchase the bike. A month and a half later I learned that I won the lottery. I was delighted to be getting $900 back. That's my understanding of how rebates work. So I happily went to the New Wheel to claim my "rebate". I was shocked to learn that I was denied because I had already purchased the bike. WTF? That is not a rebate that is a discount. The sales person never explained this to me. If he had done so, I would have not bought the bike at that time. I am a 75-year-old senior and I felt that they took advantage of me. I was very upset then and I'm still upset. The joy of riding the new bike was taken from me. I no longer wish to give them my business. Beware of their charm offensive. I will be utilizing Blue Heron from now on. read more

I walked my bike in with a flat tire and Jacob was able to immediately put it in the bike stand, remove the wheel, pull the tube and tire to determine cause and fix, and put a new tube and tire (the tire upgrade was offered and made sense to me), and put me back on the road the same day. I am an over 70 woman and I came to the new wheel on Leimert Blvd to look at electric bike. I had been to 4 other bike shops in Oakland, Berkeley and Alameda prior to The New Wheel. I felt so well taken care of by the crew there that I wanted to share a review with others. I had not been on any bike since my road bike was stolen several years ago, so I was a bit nervous at each store I visited. The new wheel guys were great. Robert went out with me, the only shop to offer, and it was a huge deal, he helped as we rode a quiet cul de sac behind the store and helped me gain confidence and refine my wants. Jason and Kansas helped with figuring out what I wanted/needed and after renting a rental one, I pulled the trigger on a new Tern NBD s5i. i researched over a dozen ebikes and features. I wanted a belt drive and internal shifting and since I was interested in Exercise not mountains and so I did not want a throttle. I picked it up Saturday the 10th and my husband and I rode in Alameda. I heartily recommend The New Wheel in Oakland. They are not overwhelming or pushy, and they are not indifferent as if you already know everything, they are genuinely nice and obviously love what they do. read more

Jacob who serviced my bike was so kind, professional, welcoming and communicative. I have been to a lot of bike shops, and this might be the best service experience I've ever had. The New Wheel is great for learning, test rides, e-bikes, etc., but today I learned that they are my favorite shop in the East Bay to get bikes serviced at (probably for analog bikes too!). I had a great experience at The New Wheel. They are not like other e-bike stores. First of all, all the bikes in the store are demos. You test ride different e-bikes and if you find one you like, you buy it and it is built for you. In my case, Kansas listened carefully to my wishes (very low step through, forward leaning road bike, adjustable handlebars vertically and horizontally). I came in wanting a specific brand, but it didn't ride comfortably. I checked out different ones and ended up purchasing the perfect e-bike for me that was less expensive than I had expected. The other thing I really like about The New Wheel is that they are in it with you for the long haul. They have reasonably priced comprehensive multiple year service and emergency roadside assistance plans. Now I can take longer trips around the Bay Area and not have to worry about bothering my kids at work to help fix a flat tire....that is peace of mind! I have learned how to ride, adjust, and better understand the more technical components of my e-bike. I test rode bikes today and Brett spent about an hour and a half with me (possibly longer as I lost track of time I was having so much fun!) talking about my needs and wants, variations between different models and brands, and what I could expect from each. I appreciated so much about my visit today. First, that he talked to me like an equal--men tend to man-splain to women, especially about technical details. As an early adopter of cargo bikes and e-bikes, I'm pretty fluent and knowledgeable and I appreciated him talking to me as such. Second, he took his time. Quality customer service, especially when making a big purchase, carries a lot of weight for me. He didn't rush or push, and took his time, handling the increasing customers smoothly and respectfully. I test rode four different bikes today--two Terns, a Benno, and a Reise and Muller. These are all top of the line bikes and I appreciate that they took care to vet each one of them, top to bottom. They stock bikes you can feel 100% sure will go the distance, so test riding is about you and your needs! The store is laid out super well. Displays are mindfully organized with curated inventory. The space is open not cluttered with every bike under the sun which allows customers to move freely without being overwhelmed. They even have water and glasses for when you get back from your test ride! After spending a fair amount talking with Brett about my old Boda Boda, what worked, what didn't, what I want in my new bike, etc., he gave me the lowdown on the different models of Tern and Benno that most closely matched my needs and wants. I did a couple of test rides solo and some with my daughter and one, he even came along with us! The Reise and Muller's belt drive was suh-weet! The Tern was nimble and quick. The Benno smooth and stylish. About their location! The Oakland location is in a commercial strip at the foot of the Oakland hills in the Oakmore neighborhood making it a prime location for putting a new bike through the paces. It's scenic and hilly with low traffic in the residential area. They've thought about every aspect of bike ownership, from purchase to service to end of life. I learned that they even have roadside service! While I hope I never have to use it, I love having the reassurance that someone has my back. I happened to be walking by with my very, very recently purchased used bike from a local person in the neighborhood, except both the tires were deflated! Walked in and asked for a bit of help and they kind enough and generous to re-seat my front tire and pump both of my tires up. I came all the way up from Los Angeles to buy a bike here, you know why? Because this bike shop is how everyone should experience buying an E-Bike! I have bought E-Bikes and regular bikes in the past from other stores and am usually met with an un-welcoming "bro" vibe. This shop is changing the game and has invented a new culture around buying bikes. The staff is incredibly helpful, kind, and communicative. They want to help you and are happy to have you test ride as many bikes as you would like. They are patient and well equipped to answer your questions without wanting to rush you out the door. They also offer financing with 0% interest which makes buying these bikes so much more accessible for folks! The shopping experience was a delight, so much so that I brought back two of my friends to test ride just so they could experience what it was like. The shop makes picking up your bike special as well. They dedicate an hour with each customer to review questions, set up your bike, and make any final adjustments before bringing it home. Every bike also gets complimentary tune ups for the first 6 months! The location is great to test ride because there is a huge hill right next to the shop so you can really get a feel for what an E-bike can do. The shop is clean, nicely designed (with complimentary tea), and other nice touches that make it feel like you are actually buying a vehicle rather than some bro sport bike.
