Love having a small grocery store right down the street! At the end of the day if I need to get a quick dinner or a few items, I can pop over without going all the way to to the bigger stores and navigating their giant parking lots. You have the love the "little guy". That independent business owner who is still making it in today's crazy world of big conglomerates. Kramer Foods is just such a store. In Hinsdale since 1953, Kramer's Foods provides that small town grocer feel with all the amenities of a large, modern grocery store. Want some homemade soup for lunch? They've got it- in fact they have two that change daily. How about a Door County pie in cherry or apple or some other small independent retailer like Bea's preserves (just sounds small town, doesn't it?) Or fresh, sweet corn picked in Plainfield and sold here the very same day. It's here. This place is CLEAN- none of the grime, dripping freezer cases or sticky messes like in other larger chains. Even the people working here are different. They actually remember you when you come in, the cart guys hold the door for you and the manager smiles from his office located out front. It feels a little "Mayberry RFD" but that's okay. It seems to make even the people shopping here happier as there is none of the cart bumping nastiness that comes inevitably at other stores. The other thing that is nice is Kramer's is really involved in the local community. There isn't a fundraiser that I've worked on where they haven't come forward with a meat or cheese tray from their deli or some kind of baked good. You have to apapreciate that as you know they are being asked from everyone to donate as they are one of the largest retailers in town. Hard to "wax eloquent" over groceries- but Kramer's deserves the praise. I say anyone that doesn't give this oh so delightful grocer five stars has a heart made of stone. Nothing has changed at Kramers in years and that is part of its charm. The old lineoleum floor when you enter are still there as are the old time signs above the deli and bakery. The baby blue theme is a constant and they have Mr. Clean on staff to make sure everything is spotless. Even the old conveyor belts are cleaner than the newer ones at the spiffier "we have everything and then some" grocery stores! Their burgers are hand formed and you can see and taste the difference. They wrap their grapes in plastic atop of styro trays, yep just like they did back in 1972. Go here for a deli sammie and you will never go to one of the chain places again. Since it's in Hinsdale they have upped their offerings to include lots of gourmet items (even for your pampered pets) like grass fed beef, organic produce, Boars Head in the deli, etc. I love shopping in this store. My dad and I can get in and out easily and the employees are great. Please Mr. Kramer don't change a darn thing. You sir have got it going on! read more

Once again the only reason I come back to this store is for the deli and the wonderful deli employees! Some of the grumpy old cashiers have to go! There is one lady that always has a bad attitude and scowls so I try to avoid her. I used to buy filet mignon here but I have been tricked too many times into spending $50 on steaks only to have them be tough, chewy or worse end pieces are tucked under a nice piece to fool you into buying them. Now I only purchase at Whole Foods or Marianos where the whole piece is visible and I can see what I am buying. The hot chickens are scrawny and also mushy like they have been soaking in a solution of some kind. Pass. The soups and quiche as well as a few salads and Boars Head products are really all I purchase here now. Sorry to see things go downhill. The man and I wandered in here last week and discovered their deli. Wow, what a mistake that was. All other potato salads now seem subpar. And spinach dips. And...oh, well you get the idea. This isn't the faux "home made" crap from a tub that's dumped into deli trays. This is REALLY home made by the little old ladies in hair nets behind the counter, full of ingredients, not wet and gooey and bland. The other great thing about this store is the produce department. I was shocked to see very high quality veg at reasonable prices. I scored some Italian cippolini onions and other goodies. Yes, I do actually cook sometimes. As others have said, we also found a lot of specialty items we can't find anywhere else. That's what this store is for. The regular prices on stuff is way too high to shop here on a regular basis. My advice...on a warm day go collect a number of deli items and have your own private picnic. Just remember, deli potato salad will never be the same again. read more

I have only been to this place once in my life, but I have a cool friend (Holla Ang) who always brings me delicious food from this place. She spoils me. lol Recently she brought me their Heavenly Chicken Salad. It was oh so perfect. Now some people don't like celery in their chicken salad OR grapes, but I do and this salad had just the right amount of both. It also has chutney and curry which I had no clue about until Ang told me. Scrumptious! I guess one day I'll have to go in and actually check the place out. That's all. read more

This grocery store pretty much sums up all of Hinsdale and my feelings towards living in it. On the surface, it's cute, clean, and has some unique items. And then after you've visited (or lived there for awhile), you realize that it's overpriced, not all that exciting, and inconvenient. Great deli/bakery, but it's expensive. But most everything is more expensive there. The real reason that we NEVER go there, even though we only live a few blocks away though is that the hours are completely inconvenient. First of all, it's only open until 8pm on weekdays and 6pm on Saturdays. And it's closed on Sundays! I don't know......it just gives me this whole snooty vibe....not the staff, who are incredibly polite, but the few times that I've gone, most of the women are very dressed up and wearing more make-up then I did for my high school prom. I'm all for independent stores and after reading the reviews may stop in if I need to buy something for a deli from a potluck, but for regular grocery shopping, it's so not worth the extra money or the hassle of the hours. read more

Excellent, pretentious little independant grocery store in Hinsdale, IL. The staff are all very nice- sweet like sugar! Their deli items are the bomb, my favorite is the heavenly chicken salad! They also sell the My Grandma's of New England coffee cakes, which are to die for! You can find some hard to find items that regular grocery stores won't carry. This is one of those grocery stores that you feel very fortunate to have in your neighborhood. Kramers is an independently owned small grocery store that has been open for over 50 years. Kramers changed two assumptions I have always made about small time grocery stores being 1. They are expensive and 2. They have a small selection, and Kramers is neither expensive or selective in their merchandise. Sure, some things like milk, yogurt, and bread are more expensive then you would get at a big national chain store. But remember you are also paying for the convienance. But relatively, Kramers prices are moderate. You can get some great deals on produce and deli items! There pre made deli sandwiches are heavenly! Also, their selection is very large. I've only gone into this store twice when they haven't had something I've been looking for. They have options for all types of dietary needs and if you can't find something you're looking for, just ask... The employees are so friendly and happy! They really make you remember a time when you knew your cheese man and butcher. They are enthusiastic about their work and their pride shows in the store. I love this grocery despite its few faults. Being a smaller grocery like you might have found 30 years ago, it has a smaller selection of goods. The owners have decided to focus on higher quality goods and I appreciate that. In fact, over the last few months they have steadily worked to improve their meat counter, and they are now offering grass fed beef. Some people will whine about the costs, but if they want to eat unhealthy and tasteless corn fed beef they can go to Jewell. One of my favorite things about this grocery is that 90% of the time you don't have a wait to check out.they keep plenty of checkout lanes open. There are a few staff members working the checkout lanes who seemed generally annoyed to be working, but they are never impolite. In closing, I really like the high-quality foods, the service, and the convenience. read more

Kramer's has been around forever in HInsdale, and has garnered a legion of loyal locals who shop here despite options like Jewel Osco and Whole Foods within an easy drive. They don't have the best selection or prices in the area, but their Deli is truly excellent, with an abundance of employees available to create the sandwich of your dreams. You'll also find top notch meat here, with helpful employees available to get you exactly what you need or resize packages. Checkout lines seem to move pretty quickly here, and I've yet to encounter a grumpy clerk here. Customer service seems to be top priority here. Parking in this strip mall location is plentiful. If you live within a few minutes of Kramer's, you could do a lot worse with your money. read more

I've only been a couple times cause I was in the area. And boy it didn't disappoint! What I like about this store is that it seems like a place everyone would know each other and its small and such. It's not the most fancy store especially in Hinsdale but it's not rundown either. Now they're food lol. They're salads are amazing! And I'm not a salad person at all. They are good and hefty size for a reasonable price and you can pick your own salad dressing for free. Any extra is like .35 cents. The only reason I nocked a star was cause this one person in the deli was a bit rude but other than that no complaints. Everyone else is really nice and greets you. Still making the trek from the City to do our grocery shopping here every other week. The husband loves the homemade chicken salad and I am a huge fan of the marshmallow pistachio salad! I also have grown to love the shrink-wrapped produce. Their meatloaf mix is made in house and is very tasty. I also bought some pork chops here that were coated in mayo and panko crumbs that were delicious. And - they have Pepperidge Farm coconut cake in the cooler! What more do you really need? read more

I have been a resident of Hinsdale for 23 years and have shopped at Kramers many times. This was my first thoroughly bad experience. The checkout clerk had an attitude from the start and was unfriendly from the start. I bought only four items put them down and then went to put my basket away. I returned to the wrong checkout lane. My checkout clerk screamed at me condescendingly and sarcastically about being in the wrong lane. She was Hispanic and she and her Hispanic friend who was the checkout clerk in the lane behind me began to make fun of me and spoke about me in Spanish. This is not the kind of service or attitude that I've come to be used to by your company. Your deli employees are terrific. I never write or post reviews so this was some thing I felt strongly to do this time because you have are two people you obviously don't care about customer service, and I'm sure they don't believe they'll be any ramifications on their poor service. read more

I've been going to Kramer for over 20 years. The food is always high quality with fantastic staff and it makes it worth paying a little bit more. I've had two recent back surgeries and I still have many problems with my knee. Clearly I have problems walking and Tony is always kind caring and helpful. Yesterday I was struggling getting my items out of my cart. Tony just walked over and offered to help. He unloaded the groceries from the cart to the checkout and then from my cart again into my car. I can't tell you how much I appreciate this Tony and I hope that your bosses understand how valuable you are! read more

Love this independent grocery store! They are located right outside of the downtown Hinsdale area, and if you are in the area, check out this grocery store for unique items, wonderful customer service, and a definite old school attitude. I've ordered fancy preps of meat here, such as crown pork roasts, etc; and they've always been high quality cuts. They carry a lot of unique items; irish butter, door county frozen pies, frozen apple pancakes, miniature vegetables; and I hear their deli is fresh and delicious. No liquor, though, and it's not a huge full service mart like a Jewel or Dominick's. And no, you won't see Kramer falling thru the doorway, but it's still a great place! read more

Many reviews of Kramer's on this site are very good, but many of them are pretty old. Kramer's , like the Old Grey Mare, ain't what it used to be. We were - yes WERE - customers of nearly four decades. That's not years. That's DECADES! Wife was on a first name basis with key employees and owners. Gave them much business including catering orders over many years. Believe me, this is NOT the old Kramer's. Quality of deli items (for which they are known) is just not what it was. I have a feeling that as those wonderful women who worked in the deli all those years retired, the great recipes went with them. Many of the items simply are no longer exceptional but the prices continue to increase as the traffic, those of us from the Hinsdale/ Burr Ridge area, will bear. What is worse, service has become mediocre to poor. Ask for your order (which they may or may not have lost) at the deli and you will have to spell your name over and over, repeatedly, even if it is only four letters and then they ask for your telephone number - REALLY GUYS? Apparently they are now hiring non English speaking employees. Again, however, their prices continue to escalate. The attitude of "we are happy to help you" is gone. If you point out to them any of the above, they will likely look at you as if you have two heads. As an entrepreneur, I am well aware that any business has only three things to sell. Quality, service and price. Kramer's has never been a low cost store but they excelled in service and quality, a tradeoff which we accepted for many years. Unfortunately now the service and quality components are slipping, especially in comparison to some of the new superstores with "boutique" delis within. (Trader Joe's Mariano's, Whole Foods, to name a few) Perhaps Kramer's now just has too many owner families nursing from the tit of this one tiny store in Hinsdale. Just guessing. read more

This is an independent supermarket. Can you believe one exists anymore?? It's an island in the sea of Dominick's and Jewel. Anyhow, it's small but you can get most anything you need. They've got a great deli and if you stop by at lunch be ready for a wait. They carry Boar's Head meat and cheeses. They also make great salads and soups. I highly recommend this grocery store. The deli is fabulous and the food is cooked on site daily. Their white cheddar mac and cheese topped with crumbled crackers is my favorite! Get there early as it sells out quickly. Their bakery goods are fresh and delicious. They are customer friendly and check-out is a breeze. Family owned grocery store. On the pricier side. The deli carries Boar's Head which is always a plus and the pre made salads and hot items have always been really good. My kids and hubby love the chicken salad and I actually like their cole slaw as well. I'm picky about cole slaw. I was quite surprised to find some things like "flavored ice" (my son wanted it as he is in the hospital and can only eat certain items) and as I looked where it seemed like Everywhere that Should have had them, I found it here of all places since it carries less items than your average grocery store.
