Stopped by Berto's Deli & Pasta Shoppe for a casual lunch and came away with mixed feelings. It's a cute little neighborhood spot with both indoor and outdoor seating and a very low-key, relaxed atmosphere. Definitely the kind of place that's easy to stop into when you're looking for something simple and unfussy. We ordered the Italian beef with hot giardiniera and a garden salad. The standout for me was actually the bread--it was fresh, soft, and really elevated the sandwich. The beef itself was decent, but it was drier than I expected and didn't have as much flavor as I was hoping for. Thankfully, the hot giardiniera added some much-needed moisture and spice, which helped bring the sandwich together. The garden salad was very basic--just lettuce, cucumbers, and tomatoes--but the Italian dressing was excellent and packed with flavor. Sometimes a great dressing is all a simple salad needs. First time trying Berto's today after hearing good things about their sandwiches. I placed an Uber Eats pickup order around 11:40 AM, and the app notified me around 11:50 that the order was ready. I arrived around noon. The place wasn't busy from a customer standpoint. There was no line, a few people eating, and four employees behind the counter preparing food. I could already see a bag with my name on it sitting behind the counter, but after standing there for a couple minutes, nobody acknowledged me. Eventually someone came over, but there was no greeting, smile, or "Can I help you?" I gave my name, he put the bag on the counter, slid it aside, and walked away without saying anything. As I started leaving, another employee called out that the order actually wasn't ready yet, despite the app saying it was. She added another sandwich to the bag, tied it up, and handed it back to me. Again with no thank you, apology, or even basic friendliness. The sandwiches were decent, but not so amazing that the customer experience doesn't matter. I'm seeing this kind of indifferent attitude at more and more restaurants lately, and it really affects whether I come back. A little acknowledgment and courtesy goes a long way. read more

I've wanted to try Berto's since moving into the area and finally did this weekend. There was a long line when I arrived but it moved pretty quickly and luckily my wife & I were able to find a table. I ordered the St. Joe's sub sandwich and really enjoyed it - the right amount of meat, cheese and toppings (I ordered w/o mayo) made for a great sandwich. They have a decent sized deli menu with a ton of frozen pastas, sauces, canned goods and deserts sold on shelves around the store - true deli style. This was a nice, small Italian deli right in downtown Downers Grove. When we went in, the place was packed with a long line to order, but by the time we were leaving, the place was almost empty. There were a number of large families taking up most of the tables when we came in, which led to limited space for waiting in line and likely a bit of the delay to get up to the counter to order while the staff took care of the multiple large parties in front of us. I ordered the Berto's sub (no mayo) and my husband ordered the St Joes (no mayo). The subs were no frills and limited toppings beyond the meat & cheese. The St Joes was much better of the two in our opinion if you're looking for an Italian sub! The bread was the highlight for me, and we had a nice quick lunch before running errands around town. Finally tried this place after living in the area for a few years. I would say this place is mostly take out, but there are some tables if you want to eat there. This is a no frills place with many great options for sandwiches. I got the Trojan sub, which was turkey and ham. I absolutely loved the bread and the Italian seasoning with the oil that was on the sub. That made it stand out to me from other sandwich places. I ordered at the counter and it did take about 7-10 minutes to get my order, although it was fairly busy. Unfortunately a little bit of our order was incorrect. I've had the pleasure of eating at Berto's for years. It's a family owned local place that everyone goes to. I've never had anything that wasn't fresh or tasted bad. It's all fabulous. Today I enjoyed a Mustang Sub. Roast beef, turkey, cheddar cheese, lettuce, mayo and oil. And I added gardiniera. What a great taste. It's so good I had to take a bite before I took the picture. They have daily specials, a full deli case, drinks and of course pasta and sauces to go. I can't say enough of the great food and personal service you get when you come here. It's not a real fancy place where you need to dress up and sit at a white table cloth table. It's convenient and comfortable, with no thrills, just great people, great food, and a family owned place. This was my first time here and I will definitely be back! I placed an order for carryout. I had a small Bertos Foccaia sandwich, a small Caprese sub and an order of Manicotti. I called Berto's deli at 10:20 in an attempt to order 3 18 inch subs to be picked up at 11:45 same day. Typically that is plenty of time for 3 sandwiches. The lady that answer the phone immediately had an attitude from the get go, but I was excited to give this place a try so I continue to attempt to place my order. With every question I could hear this lady getting more and more irritated. At one point I said do you sell cakes or desserts. She said, WHAT?!, I repeated, do you sell cakes or desserts? Her response, NO!. I then asked, can you add ten bags of chips? her response, NO, You can grab those when you get there! At this point, I had to know, so I asked, am I irritating you? Her, response, yes, typically we need 48 hours for a pickup order. 48 hours for 3 sandwiches? I politely said, please cancel my order and work on your customer service. I called Mr. Submarine in Downers Grove, he took my order in 5 minutes to be picked up an hour later. He actually thank me since I would be doing business with him. Back to Berto's, I would assume by her terrible attitude that this person was the owner of this business. I would advise anyone to stay away from a place where the owner clearly hates what they are doing. If they can't give quality customer service, I would be 100% sure that there food quality is below average and they cut corners. As a full blooded Italian myself I am shocked that this is the kind of treatment they give there potential customers. I am proud of my Italian heritage and this place makes us look very bad. Let's start by saying that when it comes to Italian sub sandwiches, while there are MANY MANY places that make them, few make them properly. If someone offers you mayo on an Italian, they don't know what they are doing. This isn't an opinion, this is old school authentic Italian sandwich fact. And with a good Italian, it always starts with the bread. The bread should be somewhat chewy with a crisp crust. Bertos bread is PERFECT. Not sure where they get it, but it is hands down authentic. Then you move into the deli meats which aren't piled high in an attempt to over-compensate for bad bread. Instead, a nice thin amount of very flavorful sliced meat was placed perfectly on the bread. Nice white provolone cheese, strong sliced onions, and shredded lettuce topped with tomato. Lastly, the dressing. Not sure if a vinegar mix, blend, or simply vinegar but, again, very authentic Italian and tasty. This is the perfect Italian with all the elements coming together perfectly. I have not had a good Italian like this in a LONG time and I keep going back. Sometimes I eat them twice a week. Amazing job well done Bertos. You made this so good I'm afraid to waste a meal on anything else you have! Ha. Strongly recommend the macaroni salad as a side to complete the experience. Very Italian as well.
