It allowed me to get an extra hour of a workout in during the week and now I'm hooked! Krav is a real world self-defense that makes me feel strong and prepares me for real life situations. ASD also offers many other classes and so many talented instructors! Coach Shayne has been a big influence on myself and my husband. He continues to help us learn proper fighting techniques. Andrea is an awesome coach who continues to amaze us! Amit, Troy, Chris, Sergey, Marziya, and Jason have all taught me so much in Krav. Ilya's Hyrox and Fighter Flow classes are fun and a great workout! He also has a cook book that explains easy and healthy recipes! Manny's Boot Camp/kickboxing classes are always intense and will leave you sore. James' DEKA class was creative, hard and definitely worth a try! My son has enjoyed the Kids Krav classes....thank you James, Andrea, Anh and Marziya for teaching the big group of kids! I love watching him come home and practice and share what he learned. We often compare what we are all doing in class during the week. I can't forget Neal, the owner! And Carrie at the front desk! They always make us feel welcome and at home! I joined the Locked In For Summer Challenge that they organized at ASD. It has helped me stay focused on my nutrition and fitness goals. And has helped me meet some new friends! Overall, ASD is a super special place. I'm so glad my family found it and I'd recommend it to anyone interested!

What I really liked about this gym was the variety of classes they offer. You can try different types of workouts and figure out what you enjoy without having to commit right away. They also let you borrow gloves and other equipment for free during the trial classes, which I thought was a really nice touch. I ended up trying the HIIT and DEKA classes, which were my favorites, and most of the coaches I had were really great. Unfortunately, my experience with one of the kickboxing classes wasn't as good. I specifically asked multiple times beforehand if it was okay that I was a complete beginner, and I was told that it was totally fine. However, when I showed up, pretty much everyone else already knew what they were doing, so I naturally felt a little intimidated. I also wasn't given much guidance despite being a first-timer. What really bothered me was that the coach called me "silly" when I wasn't able to follow the instructions. I understand that a fast-paced class can be challenging for beginners, but I didn't think making fun of someone who was trying something for the first time was appropriate, and it definitely put a damper on the experience. One other thing I wish they had was a proper locker room or changing area. They have gender-neutral bathrooms, but they didn't feel clean or comfortable enough to change clothes in, especially if you're coming straight from work. I really liked the variety of classes and the generous trial period, and most of my experiences with the coaches were positive. I just wish the beginner experience was a little more welcoming and that they had a better space for changing.

They are both more aware and more in control of their bodies, which was a big deal for my older girl, as she sprouted quickly and lost her confidence and her ability to control her new body in the same way that she had when she was younger. Learning the specific skills, as well as getting great coaching, meeting new friends and having fun has been a major confidence booster for both of my girls! They love coming each day and even continue practicing with their dad at home on new skills they are perfecting. They love sparring with their peers at different levels of skill and push themselves to improve daily. Triune has been a major positive influence to their confidence, their listening skills, and their attitudes towards everything! They absolutely love coming daily and plan to continue working towards more advancement. The coaches are phenomenal and pay special attention with the smaller ones and make sure the kids are pushed, but safely and effectively, so they learn and are eager to be able to do more. Every day is different and all levels working together allows the newcomers to gain skill while the more advanced practice and learn - it's a really good set-up that I was originally unsure of, but it works! My girls get to work with more skilled kids and it pushes them to want to be better! When working with the younger, less skilled kids, mine are better able to hone their technique of the moves and more skillfully apply that knowledge when sparring. No day is the same and they get bummed when they miss a day! Triune is THE best thing I've done for my kids!! They love it and it's helping them outside class, even when they don't recognize it!! 5 STARS AND THEN SOME!!

It's like what a real old school gym is like - no classes... you walk in and warm up and the Kru and Sr. Instructors come up to you and provide you with one on one instruction. Honestly, if your goal focus is to compete then this is NOT the gym for you - not saying there is anything wrong with training to compete - but this gym isn't for that! But if you want to sharpen your ring technique - in addition to going to where ever it is that you train now - then by all means come here and learn this style. But like i said... if your sole purpose for training is to compete, Muay Thai Academy is not the gym that will be out there trying to get to fights. Here we focus more on techniques that are more applicable to real life, self-defense, protection, law enforcement, etc - but with the Muay Thai twist to it. So what I am saying is.... Muay Thai Academy is very welcoming with a team of experienced instructors that you won't find anywhere else. I wanted a place that kept the authenticity and integrity of Muay Thai and I found it here.

With so many McDojos and ridiculous UFC-wannabe gyms in the South Bay, the Muay Thai Academy truly…read moreis something different. There is a reason people have come from around the globe to seek instruction here -- it's just that unique. While 'Muay Thai' is in the name of the school, it is merely the foundation of the principle art taught here: Close Quarters Combat. Close Quarters Combat is a combination of several martial arts (old style Muay Thai known as Muay Chao Chur, the military style known as Ledrit, as well as Boar Bando and Kalaripayat, a Burmese and Indian Combat Art) and is designed for street applications: law enforcement, VIP Protection, multiple opponent, military, and self defense. They can teach "ring style" as well, but sport/competition is less of a focus here. In addition to hand-to-hand combat, bladed and stick weapons training are also available. Instruction takes place in a free-form, semi-private format. With the exception of a conditioning class here and there, there isn't a structured class setting like you'll find at other gyms. The Academy is open from 5pm to 9:30, M-Th and late Saturday morning/afternoon, and you can go in any time during those hours and train for as long as you'd like or can handle. Instructors and Junior Instructors walk the floor, answer questions, setup drills, and help you work through techniques on an individual basis, then let you try them out on your own or with others. The Instructors are all top notch, have been working together for years, yet still have varied backgrounds and unique methods of teaching. Collectively, the knowledge they can impart is unmatched in any martial arts school in the area. I've trained here for the last several years off and on (my hectic work/travel schedule and frequent basketball-related injuries keep me from going as regularly as I'd like) and can't recommend it enough if you're a self-motivated, hard-working individual looking for unique, personalized martial arts training with street-applicable, self-defense focus from some of the most experienced combat technicians around. It is a real privilege to live in the same vicinity as this school.

There are also strength and conditioning classes that have HIIT training, which I highly recommend for fitness. I joined because I moved to the South Bay area and was thrilled to find Nakano Judo. I didn't have the opportunity to do it while I was young though I was always a fan watching it on the Olympics. Judo improved quality of life for me in the Bay Area and continues to improve my physical and mental health. Everyone is very welcoming and friendly here. We all help each other learn and improve our techniques with sensei's expert teaching style. If you are thinking about joining and learning judo, just do it and give it a try. All ages are welcome and there is option to observe and do a trial class. See you on the mat! I recently went on the annual Japanese judo tour and it was an incredible experience getting to observe and train at top universities in Japan and at the Kodokan, the birthplace of judo. It was an incredible privilege to see and learn from famous judoka guests at the different world class universities and Kodokan, like Joshiro Maruyama, Ryunosuke Haga, Takeshi Sasaki, Ken Oyoshii, Keiji Suzuki, Michihiro Omigawa, and Ashida Shoki (Assy Judo), just to name a few.. There were so many judo stars during the judo trip and they are great examples as human beings too. The trip that sensei Nakano leads is a great opportunity to meet judoka from Japan and around the world, as well as experience Japanese culture and food. You won't find this kind of experience elsewhere. Sensei Nakano also has a youtube channel, where you can refresh on the techniques you learned and a few watch lot of judo content. Guests come from Japan and around the world to teach or train, so it's a great opportunity to connect with others this way too.

I have trained at several other academies since starting martial arts, and have come across dozens of coaches and teaching styles, but Mikey's structured teaching regimen and cerebral approach to training is unmatched. It's remarkable how much I've learned in a relatively short time thanks to Mikey, and when I train at other gyms for sparring or while traveling, I'm routinely commended on my technique. Mikey's one of the rare people who manages to be both, an excellent coach and an active professional MMA fighter and BJJ competitor, so there is a practical, "tried-and-true" aspect to his training, and the techniques he teaches are battle-tested. Unlike some coaches who are great competitors, but are unable to communicate what they do in the ring effectively to their students, Mikey is very analytical and detail-oriented, breaking down new techniques into easily digestible steps that even I can learn. Once a technique is mastered, Mikey spends time to explain strategy and goes over the right time to set-up and practice using new skills in a combat or self-defense context. Whether you're a complete beginner interested in learning sound fundamentals for modern martial arts or self-defense training, or you're a seasoned martial artist who has hit a training plateau, I guarantee you will improve your game by training with Mikey.

After a few meager attempts to get into an exercise routine, it became clear I would need to pay someone to kick my proverbial butt on a regular basis. I was excited to find a gym with such consistently great reviews nearby, and WESTCA absolutely lives up to the hype. I have a decent amount of experience with lifting and resistance training, but I also have some physical limitations, so the semi-private training format has been perfect for me. It provides the structure and accountability I was looking for while still meeting me where I am in terms of experience, fitness level, and physical capability. I've been training with Ivan, who consistently brings good vibes. His instructions are clear, he's quick to adapt exercises around physical limitations when needed, and he progresses training safely and thoughtfully with encouragement along the way. Progress has been steady, and I love feeling stronger and more energetic. As many other reviewers have mentioned, WESTCA is a smaller gym with a welcoming, low-pressure atmosphere. It's the kind of place that makes it easy to stay consistent. If you're looking for a gym, WESTCA is an easy recommendation.
