Mmmmm...Doughnuts! When that fresh sign lights up, I sprint to this place only to literally drool over these tasty and fried little treats. First, the dough gets pumped out into the doughnut shape and is left to rise for a few minutes. Then, it gets plopped into the oil. Next, it gets flopped over to create that evenly golden hue. Then....and Then...Oh, It's my favorite part....!!!!!!!...it gets coated in the glossy sugary glaze! The blanket just covers the doughnut in a single woosh! Oh, yum -gooey goodness! The best part is that they have seasonal doughnuts like heart shaped ones in strawberry frosting for Valentine's Day or pumpkin spiced ones for Halloween. The worst part is that they are always changing their hours. So don't get your hopes up if its 2 am and you think the take out window will be open because it might not be (I want to cry). I wanted to give it no stars for the health aspect, but you have the following here: 1) Science: you have kind of a museum where you can see the doughnuts being made; 2) Religion: when the doughnuts fall off of the conveyor/process and go to the floor, it's like "doughnut hell" 3) Entertainment: the workers there are, well, interesting; 4) Sports: The customers eat numbers of these things at one sitting that could qualify for an extreme show. When we first moved to the South, there were a lot of food items I didn't "get." Among those items were Chick-fil-a sandwiches (It's just a piece of fried chicken on a roll, what's the big deal?), pulled pork barbecue (Where are the ribs?), and Krispy Kreme original glazed donuts (Where's the chocolate frosting and cream filling?). Thankfully, I've now seen the light on all those fronts, and for the last in that list, the "light" is quite literally the hot light on the front of each of these stores. Krispy Kreme original glazed are "meh" when an hour old, but straight out of the fryer and glazer (is that a word?), they are a kind of pastry magic that casuses guttural groans when consumed. This location is huge, with ample parking, plenty of indoor seating, and a giant window into the donut making "factory" so kids and kids at heart can watch the magic take place. They even have a drive-thru, so you don't even have to get out of your car to pick up a dozen (or two), and I guarantee you will win office points when you send out an email on Friday morning letting folks know there are hot Krispy Kremes in the break room. Perhaps best of all, one hot original glazed donut is only 200 calories, so it's a breakfast indulgence I don't feel *too* guilty about. read more

"I just lost 50 pounds on the Krispy Kreme diet!" -- Bruce Almighty (2003) How can you NOT stop when it is 2 in the morning, you have been out drinking and the HOT and Fresh neon sign is lit, I ask you? The lobby is closed by that time, but the drive-thru is definitely open for business and the ladies are always friendly ready to hand you a hot and fresh glazed KK donut and some coffee for your long ride home from your night or bars and dancing with friends. And it doesn't really matter who you are, you cannot eat just one. Don't even try. So here is what you do - order 3. One for immediately, one for 10 minutes later when you cannot believe you still want one and the third will be for the next morning when you wake up and you know you ate KK, but can't really recall the taste. Trust me. Now, when you are completely sober and you wake up on a random morning and you are getting ready for work and you imagine the hot and fresh sign is lit up somewhere and it is like a Bat Signal in your brain calling to you - this is when you are hoping there is a KK on your way to the office (there was for me when I lived in San Jose - yay me). The you come up with a reason to buy donuts for the office - just because it is a random Tuesday and the staff has been working hard. So you buy several dozen glazed and maybe 2 dozen assorted for the people who just crave chocolate or key lime or boston creme (yea, I said it). KK is more than just glazed, people. It was August 1998, before Krispy Kreme had spread like kudzu, blanketing the United States. I had been going to grad school in Austin. When the time came to head back to Atlanta, it was not a moment too soon. My mom and brother had flown to Austin to help me drive back to Atlanta. Oh what a trip it was! We set out on the highway at night. Only a few hours into our drive, this idiot pulled out onto the highway, perpendicular to traffic and not paying any attention to the cars zooming by. I swerved my little Tercel into the next few lanes trying to avoid this drunkard. I knew whatever happened, I couldn't slow down because my brother might slam into me from behind with the moving truck. It was the nearest I have ever been to being in a horrific auto accident. After this near miss, we exited the highway immediately. Waxahachie, Texas. We went to the first hotel - all booked up, some sort of softball tournament was in town. Okay, hotel number 2. They told us they had one room because someone else had just turned it down and given up their reservations. WOOO HOOO! We'll take it. What we would find next could only be described as biblical. The town was having a cricket infestation. I mean there were literally hundreds of thousands of crickets everywhere. The walls and ground were covered. It was like a breathing, chirping carpet of crickets. Had we not almost just died, we probably would have continued down the road. But alas, we stayed. I would wake several times in the night to find crickets in my hair! The next morning we set out to continue our journey to Atlanta. We stopped somewhere in Mississippi to get gas. I opened the hood of my car to check the oil (the car had been having some "issues"). D'oh! I forgot to put the oil cap back on when we were in Austin. There was oil everywhere - all over the engine! Oh lord, side trip to find a Toyota dealer and get a replacement cap. Back on the road, we had never seen so much rain in our lives. We could barely even see to drive. It was insane. The storm seemed to be traveling along I-20 with us. Would this trip ever be over?! All I could think about was my new apartment in Virginia Highland and Krispy Kreme donuts. After all, it was late night runs to the Krispy Kreme that had gotten me through 4 years at Emory. I could not wait to be home! Finally, we found ourselves rolling down Ponce. There was no power anywhere. Oh my lord! The donuts! The conveyor belt needs power!!! What about my precious donuts?!!!! We finally arrived at our destination. The Hot Now sign was sadly dim. Fortunately, they were open! No power and they were still open! The donuts have never tasted sweeter than on this day. read more

Staff is usually friendly but you can't always understand what they are saying when placing your order. And the Cops are often times lined up in their patrol cars near the back of the building.....I have no comment about that. I appreciate the fact that they are there! I mean, it's Krispy Kreme, let's be real here! On this particular occasion I had some coupons from my local circular I had been wanting to use. $2 off a frozen latte. I ourchased a caramel latte and 3 original glazed. When I pulled up to the window there was a sign for $.99 donut holes, so I exchanged one donut for the cup. Somewhere along the line I was misunderstood and was being charged for an extra donut. However, the guy at the window was patient, understanding and remorseful. I've had Krispy Kremes that were not as fresh, and they're still good, but you cannot beat a donut that has come right off the conveyor belt. Of course, I ordered an Original Glazed. I've tried their specialty donuts before also and while they are tasty, nothing beats a hot fresh Original Glazed. I was right -- I had a tiny bite of the boyfriend's raspberry jelly donut. It was yummy, but as soon as I bit into MY donut, I had a mouthgasm. Pardon the crude made-up word, but there is no other way to describe it. I INSISTED he have a bite of mine too, and he was instantly hooked. I think he was wishing he'd ordered the same, instead. The donut is light as air. Slightly crispy on the outside. The glaze has cooled enough so that it is not sticky, but it is still warmed by the donut. You bite into it and it dissolves slightly in your mouth. Oh. My. God. I think I need another one, stat. It is so hard to restrict yourself to just one. I was only slightly surprised to find they charge 99 cents per donut, no matter what kind it is. It has been many years since I've been to a KK. I remember it being cheaper, but figured they would raise the price over the years. For $6.99 a dozen, you might as well be a glutton and get a whole box, but oh well. This is my only Krispy Kreme. It looks sort of retro but fits in with the area in an awesome kind of way. It seems like the only time I make it here is walking back down Ponce at night from the Masquerade or the Clermont or whatever other sort of trouble I have been getting into to the North Ave MARTA. I pity myself for my childhood with Dunkin Donuts. All I had at my disposal was a sad, dry donut with a glaze that doesn't even cover the bottom. Krispy Kreme's glaze is in every nook and cranny, but even if it wasn't the donut itself can hold its own. Although I'm sure everyone's eaten them, and knows this. So the store...it's cool because if you're easily entertained you can watch the sheet of glaze covering the donuts as they go through the conveyor belt...a realistic version of Willy Wonka. Mmm. Watch for the "Hot Donuts Now" sign flashing outside the restaurant. This is the time to make a stop, since it means at least one type of donut is being made at that moment. There's also goofy Krispy Kreme gear for sale here...I bought someone Krispy Kreme boxer shorts once, in memorial of the day he tried to eat a dozen donuts in one sitting. INSTANT Foodgasm. Krispy Kreme doughnuts are THE best in the world, no doughnut establishment can compare. PERIOD. The curious thing about this location is that the Hot Sign is always on, gotta love that, I mean gotta love love looooove that. This mean's there's almost always fresh original glaze baking. Krispy Kreme gets you in the price though, b/c by time you purchase 4 doughnuts ($1 or so each), you're like eff it, I might as well get a dozen ($6.99), it's sickening, but it happens to me every time. You can mix and match your dozen for $7.99, which is what I started to do over this past year b/c I realized that I have only had original glaze most of my life (and I was born and raised in the A). So nowadays I'll try atleast 3-6 different flavors in my dozen... and I definitely get the seasonal doughnut in that mix (for example this summer they had a super delish lemon doughnut and the pumpkin spice every fall is to die for). I do wish they'd go back to the days when a dozen doughnuts was $5 box., though. That way we'd probably all buy 2 dozens, 1 for ourselves and the other to giveaway :) read more

They are so delicious, sugary and lightweight that you could eat a doughnut in less than three bites. I went 2 weeks ago and asked the lady behind the counter if she could bring me a hot doughnut fresh from the line. Without blinking she obliged and came back with my delicdable treat in a bag. I couldn't even leave the store before I devoured the contents. The gooey sweetness was amazing! I challenged my old roommate, a self proclaimed donut fanatic, to a donut eating contest at Krispy Kreme. She's about 5'4 and maybe 105 lbs. Me - a little bigger. We each ordered a dozen hot nows and hunkered down. The deal was whoever ate the most in 10 minutes or first not to puke, whichever. Now, I can eat. I mean, really really eat. I cruised through the first 3, so did she. I crushed another, she slowed down. Around the fifth donut, all that sugar entered my bloodstream and I started laughing uncontrollably. The other sugar mainliner caught the giggles too and we cracked up for a good few minutes. Our friends who were there to watch did not see what was so funny - that's because they didn't consume 11 pounds of sugar in 2 minutes. Back to the contest, I struggled through number six. She struggled more. In the end, I squeaked a win by about two bites. Before you judge me, we had both just finished dinner at the Vortex where we had both cleared our plates. My partner and I parked here to go to the little Chinese place next door, only to find out that was a big mistake. Don't park in this lot unless you are going INTO Krispy Kreme! They will tow your car!! It was funny, too, because they manager would not tell the tow guy to stop, even though we went in KK right after we ate for dessert. Just a note about all Krispy Kremes: I can't eat inside, because I feel like I am inside a doughnut; the smell is over powering. Kind of like when you eat something really rich, you can only have a little bit? That's how it feels eating inside. Mmmm Doughnuts. So, living just down the street from here, maybe I'm a little biased, but I love having this little haven of sweetness just down the street from me. Particularly bad mood? This is where I'm headed. There's not a lot of problems that a fresh glazed doughnut can't help improve. The staff are generally friendly and accommodating here. I've never felt rushed even when I'm standing there, totally indecisive, with a huge line of hungry patrons behind me. They've always gotten my order/total price correct at the drive through, and I've never experienced an unreasonably slow moving line. Their coffee is not fantastic. I'll be honest and say I prefer Dunkin Donuts' coffee over this stuff. That said, I'm picky about coffee and I only really like it black, so I can't mask the taste with a bunch of creme and sugar! But it gives a good excuse to make a nice pot of coffee at home, get a dozen glazed doughnuts and pig out in the privacy of my own home! read more

I've been meaning to write this review for a long time, and I got the push I needed after the most recent weekly Yelp. Basically, I'm not really sure why Krispy Kreme wasn't on the weekly Yelp Doughnut Edition. Sublime, Revolution, Sub Base (was surprised to see that on there) are interesting, but classy can't compare to classic. The one and only Original Glazed is Krispy and Kremey and is one of the few foods out there that can substantiate its "melt in your mouth" claims. There is nothing else in the world like a HOT FRESH NOW Krispy Kreme Original Glazed. Really- nothing else. How it manages to be instantly addicting, I'll never know, but it's the only doughnut I can eat, and have to withstand a raging desire to order an entire box. I know for sure I couldn't eat a whole dozen, but after my first bite I'd be able to do away with half- no matter what state I'm in. I'm sure other humans are no different. The rest of the donuts are actually not bad. I'm partial to the classics, so the most I usually do is a chocolate glazed, but all in all, Krispy Kreme knows how to do a donut. But really, there's a reason why the Original Glaze has it's own neon sign. If you choose to go inside- the drive-thru gets most of the traffic, you can watch the donuts go through the mini donut factory through floor to ceiling glass. My favorite part is the glaze waterfall- it's probably the closest I'll ever be to Willy Wonka irl. The Ponce Krispy Kreme is also an Atlanta Landmark, IMO. If that seems trashy to you, keep in mind we are the birthplace of Waffle House. I've been coming to this location for about 20 years (I'm that old). Before my family was taken over by health food crazes, my dad used to drive me into the city early Saturday mornings to get a dozen donuts for the family breakfast as a treat. He also got a lot of amusement out of teaching his 3-4 year old daughter the meaning of the term "wino" and made sure our morning rides were enriched with some good ol' fashioned "spot the wino" fun. I am not making this up. I really feel that Ponce is the soul of Atlanta, and Krispy Kreme is a undeniably important feature of that, along with other one-and-onlys like the Clermont Lounge. 9/29/2017 UPDATE!! So, back in ATL and visited here just now and have to report that the service is greatly improved!! Now, it's not Sunday morning so not as crowded, I understand. However, I was greeted and treated enthusiastically and even the zombie spoken of in my prior post had a smile on her face and a can do attitude. Good job!!!! This place got a star based solely on the hustle of the manager who rang me up. Just spent 30 minutes waiting in line for my donuts. Shouldn't have but wanted to talk to manager who was running the cash register. Don't know what's going on here but one solution would be to get rid of the zombie behind the donut counter. And, really, Sunday morning and there's one person behind each station?? Come on up to Richmond VA and see how it's done!! read more

I have been eating Krispy Kreme since I was a child in North Carolina. They are a little bit of heaven and when that hot sign is on, step right in and KNOW you are getting your money's worth. But I learned something disturbing from an acquaintance that worked at the Krispy Kreme on Pleasant Hill in N Metro. Please take the time to go in. Do not go to the drive thru. At least at that store, the boxes that sit near the drive thru window only make it that far back after they have been in the front of the store during a lull. Frequently, if you ask for hot doughnuts from your car, the drive thru doughnuts are reheated!!! I did not believe my my friend at first, but being a pathetic drive thru addict, I could not help but notice the difference when I sent a family member in for a fresh out of the oven dozen, and I grabbed a hot to go with milk at the window. Here's a checklist; the requirements are easy to fulfill: Drunk? Check. Is it sometime between the hours of 1am and 3am? Check. Hungry? Check. The best part about this place is the 24/7 business hours. This also means that the drive through is the busiest during the above hours on the weekends - believe me, I've witnessed this many times. But seriously. If you're going to put something unhealthy in your body, you might as well be generous to yourself and hit the Krispy Kreme. It's worth every single calorie, gram of fat, and the little extra poochy-pooch your stomach gets in the aftermath. I deduct one star because they seem to not know what "assorted box" means. If you have never had Krispy Kreme you must live under a rock. Yum..I almost had an accident trying to make my way to Krispy Kreme when the "HOT NOW" sign was lit. By the way, that's the best time to visit Krispy Kreme because you get the freshest of the freshest doughnuts!! I like the original, chocolate iced and lemon-filled. But they have a lot of variety. If you like milk with your doughnut, help yourself they sell milk. You can either order inside or in the drive-thru. They have areas inside if you want to stay a while. My mom and I split a dozen one time and I ate all six of my doughnuts, because when they are hot they just melt in your mouth! I don't recommend that, I paid for doing that later that night. I would go to Krispy Kreme any day instead of eating those stale doughnuts they serve at Dunkin Donuts (yuck). read more
