    Plain Naan

Our meal and entire dining experience was tasty and exceeded expectations! The restaurant was clean and welcoming and played lovely music, creating a nice ambience. The staff were kind and helpful. And the food...oh my goodness the food was amazing! We shared the samosa chaat, which was bursting with flavor! We also shared the shahi paneer which I definitely recommend. If we weren't just passing through town, we would likely be here again tomorrow.

Food is always 10/10. One of my favourite restaurants in Vancouver. Family run so the service & staff is also always 10/10. Authentic, every dish packed with flavour and great ambience!

A co-worker recently asked if I'd heard about Krsma Restaurant on Victoria Drive, knowing how fond I am of Indian cuisine. Since I rarely venture out to East Vancouver -- being comfortably based in the downtown core -- this piqued my curiosity. Out of sheer impulse, we decided to check it out that very afternoon. My friend made a reservation for two, though, as we found out later, it really wasn't necessary. Krsma is located on the west side of Victoria Drive at 36th Avenue, nestled among a variety of eateries offering diverse flavours. Not sure about guest parking availability (and probably none), my friend simply parked on a nearby side street. We arrived on time, and the dining room was quiet -- no more than five customers at two tables -- with just one waitress on duty. Normally, a well-trained server could handle that, but it quickly became clear that professionalism wasn't her strength. Despite many empty tables, we were placed at a tiny corner table, hardly suitable for two adults. This isn't a fine dining establishment with rigid section assignments -- there was no reason not to seat us more comfortably. We mentioned it was our first visit, but the waitress didn't seem to care. She left us with the food and drink menus, expressionless. Their Butter Chicken is proudly advertised on the back of their company vehicle, so my friend went with that. I chose the Chicken Tikka Masala. The waitress asked if we wanted rice or naan, and we requested two servings of rice and one garlic naan. The food took more than 30 minutes to arrive -- a bit long, but understandable due to a couple of takeout orders. During the wait, we witnessed a customer complaining to the manager. To his credit, the manager handled it well -- bringing over some mukhwas (digestive seeds) and promising to waive an item on the bill. That showed a good level of customer service on his part. When the food finally arrived, our small 20" x 20" table was overflowing: two dinner plates, two water glasses, cutlery on paper napkins, two bowls of chicken, two bowls of rice, and the naan basket -- no elbow room whatsoever. I'm 6' tall with broad shoulders, and I had to sit angled the whole time due to the lack of legroom. My friend, who doesn't eat Indian food often, asked the waitress which dish was which. Her response? She pointed and said, "Butter Chicken always has cream in it." The tone implied, "How dumb, do you not know that?" I caught my friend rolling his eyes. **The food itself?** Flavourful and authentic. Both dishes were medium spicy, and overall well-prepared. The basmati rice was plain -- nothing special. In hindsight, I should've chosen a flavoured option like coconut or saffron rice. The Butter Chicken sauce was a bit runny; my Tikka Masala had a thicker, richer sauce. The garlic naan was tasty but disappointingly small, especially for $4.95 a piece. A single bowl of plain rice also felt overpriced. While chicken entrees were on the pricier side, I get it -- that's just the cost of dining out these days. **A small anecdote:** My friend noticed a sticker offering "Free Dessert" via QR code. He asked the waitress, who said we had to scan it and leave a review to get a Gulab Jamun on our NEXT visit. We just smiled. A party of four had just arrived, and the adjacent table hadn't been cleaned. The manager once again stepped in to help while the waitress was off somewhere. One customer asked about the jars of spices on display and whether they were actually used in the kitchen. The manager answered honestly -- "No, they're just for decoration." (At least he's honest -- I chuckled.) **Final Thoughts:** Our first visit was underwhelming. The food was decent, but the service left much to be desired. Seating was cramped, prices were high for that side of town, and even with a reservation on a quiet weekday afternoon, we weren't made to feel welcome. A complimentary dessert for first-time guests would've made a lasting impression -- how much could a piece of Gulab Jamun really cost? Contrast that with a well-known Western chain that offers a free ice cream pie (12$ value) and even sings "Happy Birthday" -- no ID needed and now that's customer experience. By the way, three larger tables were still empty when we left -- so the choice of cramped setup felt unnecessary. As always, I paid cash to help the business save on card fees and left a decent tip. But for me, this was a one-and-done experience. **Final Rating:** * **Food:** (3.5/5) * **Service:** (2/5)

Looks like Old Hanoi Quarter has now been replaced by this Indian restaurant. I assume the name is pronounced "Charisma". Parking is available on Victoria, as well as the side streets. The inside looks a bit like a tropical hut. Not sure if authentic, but oh well. Bollywood style custom posters on the wall. Staff are friendly. I think it's a mom and pop, as well as a chef. Pricing is reasonable. Garlic butter naan - can't go wrong. Tastes exactly as it sounds. Lacha parantha - buttered flatbread. Nice and greasy. Beautiful. Chicken 65 - nowhere near as spicy as I was expecting, compared to other places. This one is more sweet. Something to keep in mind. Samosas - 3 per serving. Decent filling. The order was undercooked (frozen in the middle), but I ate them anyways. Buddy and I mentioned to the owner, and he gave us a discount, which was nice of him. Hopefully they cook them longer next time. Otherwise, no problems with the dish. Lamb bhuna - tasty. Decent amount of meat. Butter chicken - also tasty. Nice amount of heat when we asked for "hot". The entree portions are reasonable sized (some places use snack sized pots). While paying our bill, the owner also gave out some fennel seeds and rock sugar as a dessert, served in 2 large bowls. Pretty nice and refreshing after the meal. Definitely a good choice if one is in the area. Recommended.

Tried out this place today with my parents. We came in late Friday and just missed their lunch specials (darn!) so we only opted for a few things. We ordered the samosa chaat, eggplant and potatoes curry and garlic naan. The samosa chaat was comparable to other restaurants but let me tell you their garlic naan was so good! Fresh, hot and flavourful. Their curry was also very good! Wish it was a little bit saucier but the eggplants were great! Decor wise - I really liked the painting on their wall. The area looked clean and organized and I just wish the tables were a bit bigger. The server came by to check in with us on the food a couple times and he was very polite and I thought it was very nice of him to do so. Even though we had an issue with our bill (PST was charged incorrectly for some reason), he addressed the issue straight away and thanked us for identifying it. We are glad to have discovered this Indo Chinese place in the neighborhood!

    Gobhi Aloo (vegan)

Very solid Indian food with a clearly labeled vegan subsection of the menu. I did an online takeout order of 3 dishes plus breads, and it was ready in about 15-20 minutes. We got: -Gobhi Aloo -- very solid version of the dish, with soft, creamy potatoes and well-cooked cauliflower that still has some texture. -Vegetable Jalfrezi -- full of different veggies, cooked with a spicy, tangy, tomatoey masala sauce. Excellent. -Chana Masala -- similar to the jalfrezi but with chickpeas and plenty of tomato/masala sauce; it was even a touch on the smoky side, which was nice. You select the spiciness level for each dish. We did the Gobhi Aloo medium and the other two hot. Don't order hot unless you can handle it -- they definitely deliver on the spice, which we appreciated! Each dish was $14.95 plus tax and substantially portioned. On several days during the week, they also have buy-one-get-one deals on select dishes -- not sure how long that'll last, but that's a nice deal. The man who greeted me on arrival for pick-up was extremely friendly and professional. Good spot. Recommended.

Forage in your fridge or pantry? BZZZZTT! Wrong! The right answer is to set out for a late night traffic-free drive and head straight to the aptly named Dosa Factory. Or, for the not-so-outgoing kind, order delivery via Uber Eats. Been there, done that! Foodie Factor: Each and every dish that we have had the pleasure of trying here has been delish, from the perfect Medhu Vada (the right level of crispy on the outside and tender on the inside), the oh-so-tasty Onion Rava Masala Dosa with Paruppu Podi (sprinkled generously with gun powder), the Gobhi Manchurian (so so good that it got me nostalgic!), the yummy goat biryani, the different flavorful curries, the spot-on green Coconut Chutney and Sambhar, to the refreshing Indian coffee. Top off the sumptuous meal with mukhwas or sugar-coated saunf (fennel seeds) when you visit the counter to pay the bill, and the entire end-to-end Desi meal experience is complete! Service with a Smile: What best complements the delicious food on offer here is the fantastic, friendly and prompt service, even at 1 AM! Hats off and kudos to Bhakti and co. for serving us hungry souls post-midnight, not just with yummy chow but also with their genuine smiles :) Ambiance & Vibe Check: Given the mostly Desi crowd at all hours from day to night, the babble of conversations, the quality cuisine being served, plus the ambiance and decor with larger-than-life frames containing snippets of India's culture and its monuments, it's perfectly reasonable to feel as is you've been transported to the country itself for the entirety of your visit! Talk about a holistic and immersive meal experience which is great for dates, group meetups, and even solo treats! Parking Pain or Perk: Parking along Kingsway during rush hours is no cakewalk, and the limited street parking makes it a tad bit challenging. Cue, one or more times of circling the block! If you do get lucky, rest assured that parallel parking to fit into a tight spot by the busy road will whet your appetite (though you might lose it in a jiffy if you make a dent on the street before getting to make one on the plate!) Bang for Your Bite (Value/ROI): Given the good portion sizes along with the quality of food and service, plus unlimited bottled water, you get a fair deal for the price you pay without feeling like you're splurging. Be mindful though that the EBTT syndrome (read, Eyes Bigger Than Tummy) will ensure that you end up ordering way more than you had planned to, so it's more likely than not that you will get an inflated bill with leftovers to take home. Clean-o-meter: The place is pretty neat, thanks to the attentive cleaning staff who are constantly on their toes, attending to plates and tables that warrant their attention. The restrooms were A-OK. All in all, my mother would approve, I think! Overall: Needless to say, I'll be back here soon, risking the EBTT and ensuing food coma, just to enjoy the food-induced high! Highly recommend! *BURP*

The chicken was tender, deeply flavorful, and worked especially well with the blend of sauces. I preferred the spicier sauce preparation, which had the most depth and punch. The chicken momos were our next favorite appetizer: flavorful, satisfying, and easy to share. The Dahi Puri was refreshing, particularly with the cool yogurt, but it felt like it was missing one extra element of flavor or texture to give it the elevated punch of the other appetizers. Among the larger dishes, the Mangalorean chicken ghee curry was solid, rich and nicely spiced. The Marvai Gassi mussels were also good, with a brighter tang that made the sauce interesting. The Adraki lamb chops were more inconsistent. One was very good, while another had a noticeably stronger, almost mutton-like flavor that didn't quite match the enthusiastic recommendation from our server. Cocktails followed a similar pattern. The spicy Laguna Lime margarita was very good--bright, flavorful and a particularly good match with the food. The Nimbu Garden gin cocktail was pleasant but comparatively subdued and fell a little flat. Service throughout was pleasant, attentive and never rushed, which made for a relaxing meal. Our previous visit had been quite packed and energetic. This time, arriving as happy hour transitioned into dinner, we had considerably more space and could enjoy the colorful atmosphere without the room becoming overwhelming. It was a much better setting for conversation. Interestingly, our previous meal at Sula was stronger overall when we focused more on the mains and curries, which may be where the kitchen shines brightest. There were still some excellent bites this time--particularly the Chicken 65--and plenty to bring us back, but the experience was somewhat more mixed than our first visit. Enjoy!

It was a bit too salty for my taste, so I wasn't too crazy about this dish. Not something I'd order again. My husband on the other hand tried my dish and loved it! He said he would order it for himself the next time he comes to the restaurant. Our daughter's Mini Cheese Dosa was quite impressive. It looked more like a regular size Dosa than a "Mini" Dosa! Would I question the portion sizes to the owner on my next visit? Absolutely!!! Why do I get 2X the portions when ordering through delivery app rather than in person? But still, I rank this the best sambar I've had in Vancouver (next to my own).
