Ordered a pizza and salad for pick up after a long day of driving, only to find the pizza was lackluster, which wasn't so bad but the salad was awful. First of all they ran out of strawberries for their Nutella pizza. Second I tried to get a drink at the bar & they held my ID hostage. The manager who told me since my ID was vertical and I was 23 that it was fake and he could not return it to me. Even after I gave him 3 different forms of ID. It almost came down to me calling the police. One of my friends had a bug in her drink as well. Once I walked away from the bar the manager proceeded to talk to customers about me. Awful experience. Came to Krust for first time tonight with family. The place at first looked cool. But then once sitting felt like there was no authenticity about this place. It was very sterile. The place was covered with hipsters and was trying way to hard. The best part about the place was the huge wood fire oven, that had character. The server was kind. The drinks were good and had just enough alcohol in them. Now the pizza, at first taste it was good, but it was floppy. Like it wasn't fully cooked. We had several pies, all were decent, except the Meville anchovy one which was so fishy I had one bite and spit it out. Then we had the Nora cupcakes. They were kinda good but the cake was so dry. No wonder there is so much frosting on them to make up for the dry cake. We wrapped everything to go except the the anchovy pizza. The server didn't even ask why or ask if everything was ok. Being a server for years he should have asked why we were not packing it up. We won't be going back to to this establishment. read more

It pains me to write this bad review for KRUST as it WAS an establishment I once praised. Last night I treated my daughter and her boyfriend who flew in from Maui to what I hoped to be a great dining experience. Myself and my daughter are both in the service industry and we couldn't have been more disappointed. * HORRIBLE service. We had to wait a very long time for EVERYTHING. To the point of my daughter going to the bar to grab our drinks from the well. * The sausage pizza was extremely burnt and overdone which I brought to the servers attention and she offered us a dessert. * The dessert they CHOSE FOR US was a fruit pizza, we really didn't want another pizza, and it was NOT GOOD at all. It was smothered in a dark jam and then threw strawberries on top. * We spoke to the manager who did nothing and didn't even apologize or come to the table. * Our server spent a lot of time with 2 gentlemen two tables over while not offering us service at all. This place has several pros : good drinks, good atmosphere, good pizza. But there is no justification for the horrible service I got at Krust. I was so enthusiastic for this new restaurant, but the experience was very disappointing. First of all, upon our arrival, there was no hostess to greet us. I am totally fine with this as long as they don't take fifteen minutes to notice that my boyfriend and I were just standing there! And when we asked about our seating situation, they replied with "oh I didn't know that there was no hostess up there. I'll send someone up in a minute". Except apparently to them, a minute actually means ten to fifteen minutes. And by this time a table for four finally opened up and a hostess was approaching us. And as I was getting my hopes up for finally getting a seat, a group of three walked through the door. Despite making us wait for half an hour without any service, they seated the group that came in after us first! Their reasoning was that they could seat three now but they didn't have a seat for two available at the moment. Ironically, after another fifteen minutes of waiting, they proceeded to seat us in a table of FOUR that opened up! I have had my share of bad service, but this was by far the worst! read more

I should begin by saying that I am not really much for reviews, and do not usually feel moved to write reviews, but my night at Krust was such an overwhelming disappointment, that I feel it incumbent upon me to share it with the word, for whatever it is worth. The Good: -The whiskey list is impressive. IMPRESSIVE! I imagine that if one is inclined to go out and drink whiskey, this is the place to do it, but bring your own bottle of water... The So-so: -The pizza was alright. I thought it was a little lacking in toppings, and that they are a little small for the price. Had either one of those things been different, I expect I would not have noticed the other. Also, I suspect the sauce is just canned tomatoes. The Bad: -The service. We ordered 3 pizzas, 4 whiskeys, and a mixed drink, between three people. Not an enormous amount, but a $100+ meal, which in Middletown, CT means we could have gone just about anywhere else and eaten well. First of all, it took them over 45 minutes PER PIZZA, which we ordered sequentially. Secondly, my first whiskey took 30 minutes to be delivered, and was a full pour, where I had asked for a "taste." All in all, it took us over 3 hours to eat, all without even a hint of apology for the very slow service. Granted, it was their second night, so we were willing to forgive and forget, but... The Ugly: BE WARNED!!! They charge you $2 per water here. This is what did this place in. We were already feeling downtrodden when we got our check, but had already discussed coming back after the opening craze, when we discovered, to our surprise, that water was not free. (What is this, France? South America?) Considering that they serve salty pizza, and boozy whiskey, charging for water is insane! At the very least, they should warn the customers, as we ordered refills, that we should be prepared to pay. Even better would be the option of free, old, Middletown tap water. I felt abused, and it left me with a very sour taste in my mouth; a disappointment, because I was rather enjoying the flavor of whiskey. read more

Poor Mans Chuck E Cheese - This place is a joke. Such piss poor construction for starters. There is no sign out front, so I called to find out what they were near. No one picks up the phone. Finally found it, and walked in. No host stand in the front, just a dude with a goatee, who asks if I want a pizza. Hostess tries to seat us at a makeshift table in front of the front door on a cold February night. Ordered the RED pizza and a salad. Salad had maybe 2 strawberries on it and a walnut. All arugula, no guts. College salad. Pizza comes out late. Burnt on the crust, raw on the inside. . The pizza makers were drinking alcohol each time I walked by, very unprofessional. My fiancee and I are home now, figuring out what to eat. These positive reviews are fake. I hope the owners make the pies larger, and tastier. We can drink your fancy bourbon at home. Finally a good pizza place in the area!! I was visiting my parents and they told me that there was a new place serving pizzas from a wood oven and immediately had me convinced to come and compare it to my favorite Brooklyn/NYC pizza joints(they're always upset that they have to come visit me in Brooklyn if they want to get a good pie and wanted to see how Krust stacked up!) The decor is sort of strange? It seems like they're going for the NYC-vibe where you mix sleek/modern with rustic elements however I feel as though they missed the mark with plywood floors/tables and plywood going up the walls making me feel as though I was in the wooden oven myself. The bar area itself is spacious- you can sit at the bar and watch your pizza go into and out of the oven. The restaurant area is cramped-- if your claustrophobic, get the pizza to go! I went with a group of 5 people and we literally were sitting on top of each other. For drinks, we went with wine (they have a rather limited selection, but it's a bourbon bar not a wine bar) and one person in our party ordered a coconut chocolate cocktail-- it was surprisingly very good and fresh with vodka, coconut milk, and creme de cacao chocolate. The pies themselves are a little larger than an individual pie, but almost too small to be shared. We ordered five pies: 2 Red, Honeymoon, White, and Smoked. - The Red: The crust itself was very good, a bit too "bready" for my taste, but had a good enough bite- not enough of a crunch as you can get from wood ovens, but maybe the oven wasn't hot enough when we odered. The san marzano tomato was sauce was the perfect bittersweet balance to the fresh mozzarella and basil (in my opinion, san marzano tomatos are some of the best to use for pizza sauce) and despite the generous amount of EVOO, the pizza wasn't very greasy and was perfectly seasoned with sea salt. - The Honeymoon: Not my favorite of the pies-- but good with the same san marzano sauce used in the "red" with pancetta and pineapple-- nothing extraordinary - The White: Might have been my favorite-- with fresh garlic, fresh mozzerella, parmesan, EVOO and sea salt was very flavorful for a white pie. It wound up tasting/had the consistency of a fresh focaccia with cheese. Certain slices were a bit too over seasoned, someone in the kitchen might have a bit of a heavy hand? - The Smoked: It was okay, didn't taste smoky to me? The roasted garlic was a bit too much and overpowering Overall, I was very impressed and definitely would recommend. I'm sure over time they will get better once they get used to the oven. The best part of Krust is that it's next door to Nora! Granted we went there on a Friday night (mistake number 1), so the place was crowded, noisy, and hot. My fiance and I figured we'd order pizza for take-out and get a drink at the bar while we waited (mistake 2). Riiiiight... There were 3 people "working" behind the bar, but apparently only 1 of them actually wanted to work that night. From what I could figure the other 2 were managers or owners and only served their friends and family. You were SOL if you weren't one of the chosen. My fiance finally gets the attention of the one person actually working behind the bar and orders the pizza and drinks. The keg kicked as soon as she went to pour my beer. But no worries, one of the non-working individuals behind the bar proceeded to pour 2 half glasses from the kicked keg and gave them to his friends for free. How nice... So we wait and wait and wait for our pizza (which again, is fine because it's dinner time on Friday and to be expected). But let me mention there's about ONE pizza going in the oven at a time and there's only ONE guy manning the oven... it's okay though, because this pizza is going to be AMAZING. I mean it has to be... they're like 14 bucks a pop (mistake 3). I'm drooling by the time we get the pizza home. It just has to be delicious! Well except for that the guy cooking the pizza obviously didn't know how to use the wood oven. The heat was too high in the oven so our pizza was cooked, but there was no "krust!" I was super excited to finally eat at this place after seeing all of the reviews and excitement from everyone else in the Yelp community. This place is a little small so I recommend making a reservation for a large party or during a busy night. Being a bourbon bar, they have a significant listing of them, but they also had some interesting beers on tap. The pizzas were delicious! We ordered two pizzas to split between 4 of us. We ordered the Honeymoon and the special pizza of the night, the Beet-nik. The Beet-nik was awesome. It was a white pizza with goat cheese, caramelized onions, and roasted beets. It came highly recommended by our sweet waitress. She was spot on. The bill was reasonable and there are still quite a few pizzas on the menu I cannot wait to try. Decided to finally give this place a shot after hearing people randomly rave about it. I was pleasantly surprised by the salad options and by seeing my one true love, burratta (prepared differently daily), on the menu. After hearing about the burratta preparation for the day, I decided to go with the cucumber salad. It was excellent, prepared beautifully, had torn pieces of mozzarella and croutons to die for. I wish it had more dressing, but it was incredibly fresh. I struggled to decide on a pizza since i don't normally stray from a hot cherry pepper pie, but that wasn't an option. We went with the traditional white pizza with basil, garlic and mozzarella. It was delicious. It was a Tuesday evening and happy hour, so our wines were $4 a glass and pizza was $9. This is a tough one for me. I came here with two friends not too long ago and we sat at one of the high top tables. We got drinks and ordered 2 pizzas. Then we waited, and waited, and waited, and waited. Maybe an hour later, we finally got our pizza. I know it doesn't take an hour to make a pizza! When the waitress arrived with the food, she apologized and said that they had been slammed with a lot of to go orders while we had been sitting there. I am not sure it's fair to have the patrons in your restaurant wait while you are filling to go orders for people! Anyway, the pizza that we had was good - one with a smoky flavor was particularly good and worth ordering again. Maybe I would just place a to go order next time though so I can get my pizza faster though! We shall see! read more

They have particle board for their ceiling! the food was bland and the pizza was soggy, burnt and the sausage tasted like hamburger and the red sauce tasted tinny like they scooped it right out of a tin can. They do not have a wide variety of draft beers...they were all IPAs...the only wit beer they had on their menu had just kicked... The cocktail menu is extensive...maybe that is what they are known for? The service was terrible on top of it all... Where to begin? We were super excited to give Krust a try. The Facebook hype made it very appealing. We have tried this place a couple of times now. Out of respect, I wanted to wait to write my review to see if I still felt conflicted, and I do. We were lucky that the parking wasn't all that bad each time we went, but I will admit that I can see how it could become a problem during prime times. The place is interesting - certainly a different approach to decorating, but to each their own. I am not there to admire the walls and floors, but rather to induldge in, what I was hopeful for, good pizza. The tables are small, they squeeze four people into what really should be for two, becaues they have limited space. I guess I can understand the desire to offer the relaxed setting for those munching on pizza and the bar setting to indulge those looking to drink some whisky; however, then you take a seat. The chairs are some of the most uncomfortable restaraunt chairs I have sat in, in a long time. They appear to be very similar to, if not, your average run of the mill lawn chairs, and your bottom will feel it by the time you leave. They leave a lot to be desired which seams odd to me...one would think that you want people to stay and drink more whisky. So, the pizza. I like pizza with toppings, and while the toppings were ok, they were highly inconsistent from pizza to pizza, not to mention that 1/3 of the pizza was just crust. I guess when I order pizza, I want more than crust, otherwise I would eat a loaf of bread, no? I hear they consider this to be their style. Very creative answer to inquiring minds. As a cost accountant, I think they like the cost cutting results, and they only hope that folks will drink enough whisky to forget about the crust, with a sprinkle of cheese. Oh, and some of the crust comes burnt...not charred, but burn't and other parts are chewy. Some pizzas are very moist, actually downright, weight. Yum! Again, I suppose if you drink enough, you won't mind the dough, or the wet center, or the lack of consistency, or the time between when you can expect your next pizza if you order more than one, or the uncomfortable chairs. I have frequented many pizza locations, and on several occassions I would be offered a free pizza for what I would consider to be uncomparable to this place. I suppose it depends on how proud you are of your product...clearly these folks care more about their liquor selection, than the pizza they serve. The waitstaff is very pleasant, but the bar tenders aren't always on top of filling orders for those eating in. I guess they prefer to serve those who will leave a tip that will land directly in their pocket. I was surprised to be told that the pizza with egg was burnt because it's a Neapolitan pizza. I was born in Naples Italy I've been back many times and I have never had a burnt pizza. I sent a picture to my family in Naples. They thought that was crazy. The darn egg was hard and the black bubbles on pizza were awful. Some may love their pizza, but I wasn't impressed. Ordered a brussells sprout pizza and pepper and onion. The sprout pizza has less than one sprout per slice and almost half of the crust (krust?) was entirely untouched by any type of topping. The pepper and onion pizza had at least one piece of pepper and one piece of onion on each slice, so I guess that is better, but again almost half of the pizza was just crust without any topping at all. The taste was pretty good, but not great and I was disappointed that the crust was lacking any of the crispness you would expect from a wood fired oven. Finally, at $13 each for what were basically small/medium sized pizza I thought it was pricey for what you got. Their pizzas are definitely unusual. Some may love them, some may hate them. Update 5/20: Love the pizza, but went back to sit. We both ordered a small pizza, but no room to eat a salad at the same time. :( This will definitely be on our take-out list only. Update 5/20/14 (a year later...). This place is expanding and when it's done, it will be the best pizza place in the area. We love the diversity of Middletown and are always welcoming of new restaurants that open so we decided to try Krust on Saturday May 4th, 2013. It looks pretty classy from the outside but when you get inside, the place looks like it was quickly put together with its plywood decor. Sound is horrible because of it too. You either have to speak very loudly to be heard or you have to sit almost on top of each other. Sun glare from the front door is also a problem if you are sitting across the front door at 5:00PM. Bring your sun glasses. The place is SMALL too. So if you have a large group and are visiting during a busy time, you might want to call ahead to see if they offer reservations. As for the service, first you couldn't hear waitress. I had to ask her to repeat herself more than a few times. After the food arrived she never came back to see if everything was okay. She returned AFTER we finished eating to see if we wanted another drink, we didn't. Speaking of drinks we ordered a couple of Margaritas and they came in whisky glass and I do believe the salt that was around the glass was regular table salt. If you are going to have a bar, serve the drinks in the appropriate glass. The food was okay if you like burnt crust, then this is the place for you. If I could upload a picture for you I would. It was horrible. I have never been compelled to write a review before for a restaurant, until now. If you are coming to Middletown to dine, there are much better places. read more

For a pizza and bourbon bar, this place definitely gets 5 stars. It's a tiny, trendy, rustic/industrial looking place, and likely to be crowded. The tables and chairs are NOT comfortable, but really, I doubt they want anyone hanging out at the tables all night since there are so few. We've had the smoked pizza and a few others, which were all good, but not consistent with the amount of toppings from one time to another. The waitresses we've had were always amazing, knowledgeable, and FAST. For drinks, they have a great selection of microbrews and a HUGE selection of bourbon. Definitely a must-try. read more

I have been here twice- once for dining in and once for take out (last night). The first time I was here I was only a few weeks after opening- with two friends, it was common middle ground for us as a meeting place. We all had cocktails, which were unique, delicious, with fresh ingredients, and very moderately priced. I had the Strawberry Fields, then an Old Fashioned. Deciding to skip salads, we each ordered our own pizzas (not really sure of the size but expecting smaller size) and we were happily shocked when three larger pies arrived to the table, and we were able to mix and try each other's and all left with leftovers. That night, I had the Shroom but was able to try some of my friends Veg also. The Shroom is just perfect. I'm obsessed with the idea of a hot pie with a cool salad on top (or in this case, arugula- yum) For dessert, there are NoRa cupcakes. I had a milky way cupcake, friends had margarita cupcakes. I truly cannot believe I remember everything that I had from that night and it was a year ago- very impressed with myself and Krust because it means it was very memorable! Last night was my second trip to Krust. My friend just moved to Portland and we were organizing and decorating her new apartment, when hunger set in. We hopped over the bridge and decided to have a quick drink and order some 'za to bring back and help us through the rest of the work. We were looking for a seat at the bar but only saw one, when these two lovely ladies offered to move down for us (thank you!) so we could both sit. Then, we were greeted by the owner, Kevin, who took our drink and pizza order. He was very pleasant. I ordered an Old Fashioned and my friend had a Negroni-esque cocktail. We ordered the Shroom (still can't stop thinking about it) and the Veg, and a salad. The salad was great- mixed greens, pinions, tom's, and roasted garlic, which was a nice, unexpected accouterment. The pizza was just as good once we got it back to her apt, except we realized we forgot to bring cupcakes home. Which made us very sad. Overall I really, really enjoy this place. While several other reviews complain about the small space, I actually prefer that. I like how from almost any seat in the restaurant, you can see the beautiful pizza oven- and I especially like that view from the bar. I also have this thing for open kitchens, it makes me feel better about eating at a place because it shows that they know they're sanitary enough to show it off (a little weird of me, I know). I was excited to try the pizza from this place.... After being seated, we had to wait a while for our waitress to come by and introduce herself. She then forgot to get our drinks and never came back for a refill or to check on us. Needless to say, our pizza was burnt. I don't meant slightly burnt crust, I mean half the dough was burnt and you can taste the burnt dough. Although the waitress was nice (or pretending to be), she did not do a great job at doing her job. On top of that, the burger pizza was burnt and the meat didn't taste like meat. I really liked Krust! The drink menu is fun and there is a lot to try! The atmosphere is trendy but fun and relaxing, and the flatbreads are really good! Really loved the Brussels sprouts one!! The only downfall to this place is they don't take reservations- so we've only been able to come twice now, and both times we had to go early- if you show up at 6pm there's already a significant wait time. 7pm- expect at least two hours! I wish they'd start taking reservations or at least call ahead bc I'd love to go back more often! read more

Neil the bartender was Uber attentive and Richie, one of the owners, went out of his way to thank us for coming in. I make it a point to stop in whenever I am visiting from South Carolina. My first time being here as my family has been here and had rave reviews about it. What s disappointment in the pizza. I was so upset. The burrata was Delicious hence the two stars.
