On my extended work trip in Hickory, I stopped into Ku-Ru. The parking lot is very tight but fortunately I was able to find a spot. The restaurant is small but has a variety of seating options. I was seated at a booth and soon placed my order. I opted to try their hot sake. It was tasty and came in a really cute carafe. I ordered the sashimi sampler and a spicy tuna roll. Everything was very delicious. The sampler came with either a soup or a salad. I did NOT like the salad. It was just lettuce and I didn't finish it. Otherwise, the meal was on point and the prices were fair. Service was fantastic. I will say they didn't provide a dish for soy sauce and that was odd so I ended up just trying to put it on my plate which wasn't ideal. But other than that and the salad, this was a great sushi experience. It also appears as though they have a drive thru and that's pretty cool! read more

Well I've had better and I've had worse. Everything we ordered tasted just ok, the pork pot stickers tasted frozen, the yellow tail chevice was missing the "zing", it tasted flat with no seasoning. The beer list was ok, the Lucky Buddha was really good. Our server was the best part, she was fast and very attentive. But over all it reminds me of a Panda Express just with a closed off kitchen. I went here with my dad, we both enjoyed it. Heres the full story: We came here since another sushi place nearby had a waitlist. This place looked very promising due to reviews! The outside was a bit intimidating upon arrival, but the inside was very clean and comfortable. We ordered the lunch special, (3 basic Sushi rolls with a side of soup or salad, we chose soup,) which was a lot cheaper than we expected. Soup came out first, it was excellent. The broth had lots of flavor and the meat was soft. When the sushi came out, we were pleasantly surprised by the quantities. Everything was really good and we even got a side of Yellowtail sashimi. The waiter was very polite but a little quiet. The only reason this place is a 4 star for me is because it's above average for a pretty average sushi place. I've been coming to this area for a few years and have driven past this place and thought it would be worth trying. We arrived on a Friday evening in the parking lot was full, so I was concerned if we would get a seat. We ended up having to park in the lot of the restaurant next-door. Luckily, the wait it was only about 15 minutes. The place was packed so apparently it's a popular spot in the area The waitress was very attentive and friendly, but she also apologized a lot which we couldn't figure out why. The food was just OK. I got the salmon teriyaki with fried rice and vegetables. I wish I would've gotten white rice. The fried rice had no flavor and very little vegetables. The broccoli was over done, and the carrots were large round discs and oddly sweet. If you've had great Japanese anywhere else, you will be very disappointed with this. If you're a custom to kind of basic food, this will work for you. I definitely won't be back when I'm in the area again. read more

Surprisingly amazing! My wife and I were craving sushi and found this little gem. Walking up it looks almost like a fast food chain, I even uttered the words "if this is like a Panda Express I'm not getting sushi" and boy am I glad I was wrong. When you walk in the door it's like you've gone to Narnia! It is a cute and fun traditional take on a Chinese restaurant. We just moved to NC from California and I was nervous I wasn't going to find good sushi here but we tried it here for the first time and we were both very impressed on how good it was! My favorite was the cherry blossom & omg roll but definitely the omg roll tops it! We also tried the salmon skin roll, the taste wasn't bad but the fish smell was too strong for me. Kuru Sushi is located in in the heart of Hickory is by far the most legit Sushi restaurant in the area. The restaurant offers sushi and hibachi dishes. I stopped in on a Saturday evening around 8:00 p.m. It was surprisingly quiet for dinner time. I was seated as soon as I arrived. The menu offers a great variety of sushi. There's a section for the "special rolls" and a small column for your "casual rolls". I went with one of each. When my sushi arrived, I wished that I had gone with two special rolls. The special roll -- Sexy Dragon Roll was on point. It was packed with flavors. The Philly Roll...not so much. The rolls are small so you may want to order 2-3 rolls. Honestly, this is the perfect size for sushi. I'm not a big fan of sushi rolls that takes 2-3 bites to eat. Overall, great food and customer service. Ku-Ru is tough to rate. My whole family loves it, but me, not so much. The staff is wonderful. Extremely friendly and welcoming. The dining area is always neat and clean, but the furnishings a little uncomfortable. The service is attentive but the food can be sometimes slow to come out. After going there for many years the menu is a little stale. I suppose the biggest issue is the small portions. I'm still hungry when I leave there. That's never a problem at the other Asian restaurants I frequent. I'm sure I'll be going there again at the behest of my family, but I would avoid it if it were up to me. read more

Ku-ru is a new sushi/hibachi restaurant in Hickory. Well, new to me. I chose it because I thought it looked casual enough to go in our shorts from shopping. We were seated immediately and served kindly and quickly. Our waitress tonight was a real pleasure! They brought us Miso soup to begin, and it was delicious. Very intense flavor, and just enough to whet our palate. We ordered Crab Rangoon to begin and it was crispy creamy deliciousness, but the real stand out was the light sauce that came with it. It wasn't a cloying sweet and sour sauce, but a real sweet chili sauce. We all got sushi rolls for our meal and all were fresh and delicious. Everything looked as good as it tasted. The kids wanted to try the Mochi balls for dessert and they were good, but I believe that might be an acquired taste. It was a bit gelatinous for me, but the girls seemed to like it. We also got fried ice cream, and it was fine, but I do suggest just skipping dessert. We enjoyed our meal there and are sure to be back again soon! read more

I wish I could give this review a 3.5 rating. Their miso soup was very bland which leads me to believe they skimped on the miso. Honestly, it was the worst I've ever tasted. I had to add some soy sauce!! I shouldn't have to do that with a great tasting miso soup. My sister and I also got some fried dumplings as the appetizer. While they were crispy, they were also lacking in flavor. Very disappointing! The only thing that made it better was the sushi. I got the rainbow and red dragon rolls. My favorite roll was the red dragon. The sauce they drizzled on that one was pretty awesome. If I ever stop by again, it will only be for the red dragon roll. As far as service goes, I thought they were very friendly and attentive. We were greeted when we got there and as we left. Great spot in Hickory! They have good prices on their hibachi and I enjoyed their sushi. We ordered the chicken hibachi and steak (med rare) hibachi and they were both delicious. Their shrimp sauce isn't super flavorful but still pretty good. I felt the rice had a bit too much soy sauce. I subbed out the mushrooms for broccoli and it wasn't an issue! We also shared a roll (something fried), and it was very good! I think next time we're back, I'll try a more traditional roll to try their fish quality, as I can't really speak to that. They do have a rewards system, but it's a little confusing. It makes it seem like you sign up and get a free roll right away. Not sure that's correct but that didn't happen for us. Oh well, guess I'll hope for something next time. read more

I was so impressed with this sushi! I had the Sexy Dragon and Sunset rolls. I loved them both but the Sunset roll was my favorite! Been here twice and had hibachi each time. First time was much better. Portions of the entree seemed smaller and appeared to be compensated by a heaping serving of rice. Food also tasted extra salty which was noticed by everyone at the table. Service was good.
