If you are headed to Hana this is the place to stop. Ok, it's a little place and you won't expect much, but that's a good thing because you will be surprised. Think of a small convenience store on the beach, what would you want it to carry? Maybe everything you need once you leave the house for the beach. Absolutely everything you need, from sunscreen to pH+H20 and the deli is great. The location could not be any more perfect, it's right on Hana Highway so as you go by the dips in the road past Paia, do not try to speed past. It's on the left and looks unassuming. The surfboard fence is a great way to identify the location. The staff is great well mostly, the girls behind the deli counter that serve with a smile are great, from time to time you will get a grumpy little lady and although she is professional, she doesn't crack a smile all that often. This place is wonderful. They have tons of healthy items (chicken salad wrap in a collard leaf, zucchini noodles, butternut squash and chard salad to name a few), a coffee/juice/smoothie counter, kombucha on tap!!! BEER!! (Great selection too) And chips and stuff. Their ready-to-grab fridge is a wonderland. Freshly made juices and nut milks in mason jars, "famous" Kuau hot sauce, also in a mason jar, and sandwiches that actually look appetizing. Sandwiches do not come in a mason jar. Service at the drinks bar can be slow when they're busy but it's a small shop and always all smiles. Doesn't bother me. Chill reggae music to bop along to while you wait. I love this store. I have resisted writing a review because I know it's just a matter of time before everyone on Maui and every north shore visitor discovers it and takes my favorite spot at the coffee bar. But, I cannot not sing its praises - so here goes. Coffee - having spent 15 years in Portland, I am only satisfied by a deep, dark roast. Kona coffee and flavored coffee are not my thing. Kuau Store has a nice big dispenser of the good stuff (and the other stuff, but I pass that). And if you want an espresso, Americano, etc. they will make that as well. Breakfast sandwiches - fantastic. Meaty, cheesy, or vegetariany - they've got that. Even my bacon loving construction worker husband loves the breakfast paninis, and that is saying a lot. (Finally - a place we can agree on!) The panini, by the way tastes fresh baked - so it comes from somewhere on Maui. Sandwiches - I cannot get the brie, green apple, turkey panini sandwich out of my mind. I bought one on a morning I was headed on a hike - ate half on the way to the hike, and by the time I ate the second half at lunch, it was gooey melty deliciousy and I look forward to the day when we are reunited. I also had another turkey sandwich, but by golly I am now distracted by the thought of brie and I can't recall what else was in it, but I remember it being good, good, good. The sandwiches are also large and very reasonably priced. Deli case - if you can't satisfy your hunger in this deli case, there is no hope for you whatsoever. Fresh salads - spinach and pear with almonds, spaghetti squash pasta salad, kale salad, etc. Fresh poke for the Hawaiian in you. And my all time favorite, fresh caprese. Plate Lunch - you can get a good, solid lunch with meat and carbs - kalua pork, barbecued chicken, and rice for a good price. (I keep expecting this place to be more expensive for what you get!) Groceries - they have mac and cheese, soup, soap, and my favorite hot sauce - Adoboloco. I don't shop here because I do my household shopping at Safeway and Mana Foods (and a shout out to Haiku Market), but if you're staying in the area you will surely find most of what you need. Juice/Smoothie Bar - they had me at "Kuau Kleanse." One of the friendly staff lured me over for a taste one afternoon of this green apple, beet, mint blend, and I've been hooked ever since. Being a one trick pony, I haven't varied from my new favorite. Parking - If you want to get some great food and snacks on the road to Hana or on the way home to Haiku, they have lots of parking and you bypass the whole Paia quagmire. This is one of my favorite things about Kuau store and why I've been afraid to share! Staff - very, very friendly and interested in what you want in this new neighborhood store. (Did I mention free samples? Hello!) How I know it's my new favorite place? A couple of days ago I ran into not one, not two, but three friends - and also a movie star (no photos, please - it's his neighborhood so let's all be chill). When I drove by on my way to town the other day I instinctively looked to see who was on the front patio - and beep, beep! sure enough, one of my neighbors! This place is total Yelper bait - on the start of the Road to Hana, locally owned, vaguely rustic and hippie, and generally just "that kind of place." It's thankfully pretty good all the same. Kuau is a chill general store at the beginning of the Road to Hana that sells a panoply of snacks and drinks alongside some hot/cold salads and sandwiches. Prices are, as you might imagine, a bit high, but the selection is decent. The food here was pretty good. I got a hot Cuban sandwich, which I found rather tasty and fresh - not a surprise, as it was made right in front of me. My girlfriend got a plate lunch, which was equally delicious - the pork was definitely a winner in my book, be it in my sandwich or on her plate. I also got some of the kale salad, which was rather tasty, though not the best I've had by a long shot. If you can stomach the price, this isn't a bad joint to stop before hitting the Road to Hana. read more

Currently biting into one of their breakfast panini's which comes with ham, a fried egg, cheese, tomato, and some kind of yummy sauce, served on a ciabatta roll. totally hitting the spot. I ordered the "Protein Warrior" smoothie as well which is one of favorite smoothies EVER. It includes almonds, banana, almond milk, Sun Warrior protein powder, etc. This is great little deli but it can be a little pricey. My one critique is that when I went to go pay, the cashier with the red hair totally ignored me throughout the whole process of paying, even when I asked a question. Then when my friend went to pay, she snatched my friends card from her hand and looked annoyed. When my friend said thank you, the girl ignored her and rolled her eyes. Cozy little store on the outskirts of Paia Town. The store is nice and clean with your basic snacks for any road trip. They have poke, paninis, plate lunches, sandwiches and wraps ready made or made to order. I had their mixed plate lunch for 9 bucks. It consisted of two scoops of rice (I had hapa), macaroni salad, bbq pulled pork and shout chicken. It was as delicious as it sounded! The staff is super friendly too. The parking is at a minimum which right off of Hana Highway, so it can be a little difficult to park and to get back into the highway. If you can manage to find parking, it's worth the stop. read more

This a must stop before starting your road to Hana journey. Of course I found it on Yelp! They have everything you need for your all day drive. Drinks, extensive coffee bar, sandwiches, poke, salads, snacks and desserts. We chose the prosciutto caprese and the Italiano with quinoa salads. They were both very good on nice soft bread. The salad was good, not great tho. They package everything up really well for you and of course provide utensils and napkins. I thought the prices were very reasonable for being such a touristy stop, only about $20 for the both of us. read more

If you are doing the Road to Hana, this should be your mid-morning or early lunch stop. The poke here is phenomenal. I would recommend the limu and the spicy mayo one. Poke is charged by weight but if you get the poke bowl (comes with brown or white rice) it is a flat charge of about $9 if I remember correctly. The fish is super fresh and the flavors are really clean and bright. It was some of the best poke I had in Maui. They also make in house juice blends you can grab from the display case as soon as you enter on the right hand side. We got a mango lemonade that included bits of real fruit in the infusion. It was def worth a try, not overly sweet and fully organic. read more

On are way back from twin falls...we stopped at kuau store. I remember working at HC&S and grabbing a quick drink here many times. Though this place has change since then! We were told by a local to grab a snack from here before a drive to Hana. I'm glad we did because we did get hungry before we passed any food kiosks. We got the chicken curry wrap and hubby got his coffee which he said was ok. The wrap was the definition of bland! There was absolutely no salt or flavor in it! Thankfully, resourceful as I am, I had a sachet of salt and with that the wrap was just ok. So yea, if you get something to eat here make sure you have salt unless you don't take salt for health reasons! What a gem! This doesn't look like much from the outside but the cars come and go all day so I had to try it on the way home one day. Amazing! The POKE is delicious and so so fresh. So good that we came both on the way to Hana and the way back from Hana! No decision fatigue here, because they only have three flavors - ahi shoyu, spicy ahi, and furikake ahi - and all three are equally delicious (so you will end up getting all three :')) For best bang for your buck, I recommend getting the poke by the pound, versus the poke bowls. Besides poke, they also serve fresh-to-order sandwiches, premade salads, fresh juices / smoothies, trendy "health food" (ie. tumeric drinks), coffee. The other grocery items and snacks are admittedly pricier, but this is a great pit stop before hitting road to Hana. It's also located a bit further down the road from all the other Paia stores, which is nice because you don't have to deal with traffic / parking. read more

The quest for all those who come to Maui is the local experience. 5 star resorts sell the concept, but the commercialization of it all keeps a person from feeling as if they've found the true Hawaiian spirit that they're looking for. The best parts of this island, I've found, are in the most unlikely of places. The real locals NEVER eat at the 4 star restaurants, they eat at converted gas stations in broken lawn furniture with sloppy mixed plates. This is traditionally the best food of Maui. The Kuau Store defies local logic. It's an oasis in the desert between Paia and the great unknown on the Road To Hana. Between the beer and wine of this little shop lives the true Hawaiian meal. There's pork and chicken, but the mixed plate is always where it's at. Dalton (please forgive me if I spell your name incorrectly), mans the deli, and a chalkboard conveys his masterpieces for the afternoon. I made one of the wisest culinary choices of my life and asked him to make me his lunch, and I received just that. A mammoth plate of brown rice smothered in the gravy of a chicken recipe that I'll never be able to describe in enough detail to do justice. The pulled pork with BBQ sauce sitting shyly on the side didn't know its own beauty. Beside the pork sat a macaroni salad that was the perfect companion to the meal. The constant that people search for is the spirit of aloha. It's hard to find for the casually observant, but widely available to those who pay attention. Dalton didn't have to make my meal as he would his own, but his professional pride kept him from doing anything less. And in the truest spirit of Maui, I ran into him upcountry tonight at an unassuming bar having a drink. He was more gracious than most whom I've complimented on their meals, he seemed to truly appreciate my thanks and remembered my order amongst the hundreds he had likely taken during the day. To say that I recommend the Kuau store is To say that the Louvre is a good aside on your trip to Paris. You won't be disappointed by anything that you find within its walls. We popped in right as the deli closed for the day and we needed some heathy snacks and a sandwich or wrap. My kids were really wanting fresh veggies... at first we didn't see anything but the owner, I presume, jumped in and asked what we were looking for. Everytime I come in here, it is such a pleasure! I've been coming to this store here and there for years being that I'm born & raised in Paia and this is my stop before Ho'okipa and they have a better selection for alcohol than Minit Stop or anyone else on the North Shore for that matter tbh! The owner Ed, has always asked if I needed help finding something in his store to or is there stocking the fridges. An owner who is working in the front alongside his employees will always get a five star from me! The cashier, Jojo, on May 29, (sorry if I'm mistaken on the name... young girl with blue eyes?) Great customer service! Keep up the work sis! You made mine and my friends day simply by being yourself and having a genuine conversation with us. I also wanna recognize the older Filipino man? Great little neighborhood shop with all the essentials. Staff is always friendly and treats everyone like ohana. Deli counter offers yummy treats like poke poke, mac salad and sandwiches for a quick bite on your way to/from Hana. Coffee shop is also open early for your caffeine fix in the morning or fresh fruit smoothies if that's your thing. Whenever I am on the east side of the island, particularly anywhere near the Paia/Kuau area, I can not resist a stop at the Kuau Store. I always get some Ahi Poke. It is truly the best I have had. Yesterday I wanted and little more and added a vegetarian breakfast sandwich. It was absolutely delicious! When you go, also check out the juice bar and the raw food section. It is all so just plain good. I could write a bunch of fancy words about it but when it comes down to it all we ever really want to know is "is this food good", so I am telling you, this food is great! read more

In LOVE with the Kuau Store! You have to try it on your way to Hana!! Seriously, I never leave disappointed. It has all of your yummy and healthy snacks you could ever ask for, and has a sandwich and poke deli area. As an option on the menu they have a sandwich & salad combo where you can pick one of each from any of the listed options, which is what I usually opt for because it is a steal! I have had an chipotle chicken avocado bacon panini with a cucumber zoodle salad on the side, and on another trip I fancied myself a buffalo chicken sandwich and a pear spinach salad! Both were amazing and because they were so good now each time I go back I'm torn between having either those two again, or trying something new! A lot of the sandwiches and salads are changing on the menu, but no fear because everything is delightful. Kuau Store does have some pastry options as well, with the banana bread being to DIE for. And the vegan overnight oats are the bomb. Ed is the owner and he seriously rocks. He is always in there working away with the rest of the team, which you don't see too much of now a days!! I love me some Kuau store! I always stop in for a cuppa coffee after my am run at Baldwin beach, and the ladies behind the counter are always so sunny, it puts a smile on my sweaty, disheveled face. Yes, it's a lil' pricey, but there's lots of variety and quality items in the store. I'd much rather shell out for something that will do my body some good, as opposed to paying little for crappy food. The chia seed pudding is great, the chicken collard wraps are good for those trying to cut down on breads, and the cold press coffee is really nice with a splash of soy milk. This was the perfect stop for a healthy Road to Hana picnic lunch. My husband got a sandwich and pasta side salad. I got the zucchini zoodle pesto salad with sundried tomatoes and Parmesan. They had plenty of interesting juices, milks, snacks, and "power food" items. I was pretty obsessed with the options, and my husband (who is not quite as health-nutty) was able to fine a few things he was willing to eat.
