Came in to see what the hype is about since there is a $5 promotion off on Fridays... nothing to be excited about. It's just the fried chicken wings & sushi and ribs that are $5 on Fridays. The Mac and cheese looks unappetizing to eat. The cashiers are slow at their jobs ringing people up, you're better off using self-checkout. Deli area is coddled with a swarm of flies. The produce area is super filthy to look at , I couldn't even fathom eating from the bakery either. read more

This Safeway location is new, clean, and well-organized. The cold food section was very cold since they don't have doors on the coolers, unlike many other grocery stores. The staff was friendly. Prices were definitely higher than on the mainland, but that's expected for Hawaii. read more

Safeway is not my favorite grocery store but I still go there at times. What I like: Convenient location at the edge of Kahului. They offer a discount coupon if you get your flu shot there. Wide selection of products. Good sale prices for ice cream. Cheaper gas than most places. What I don't like: Freezing cold inside! Terrible traffic jams at times to enter the lot...they need more access points. Prices are higher than other places. Stupid in- store apps to get discount on items. But the service is always friendly and helpful so I'll continue to visit here occasionally. read more

Always an awesome place to get some basics like water, bread, snacks, fruits, and.... POKE! If you want a large selection of POKE to choose from, Safeway is a safe and solid place to go. This place is always busy, and especially this branch because it is right smack in the middle of tourist town. But there is a large free parking lot so it's convenient. Also the location is very convenient. Everyone from our party seemed to have found a place to stay along this strip. Well, it used to be a great location to stop for things on the way home, but they've now locked up the liquor. Not usually a problem but this Safeway has always been understaffed. Nobody around to assist with the booze. I understand there was probably theft but this location will lose customers because of that, just waited 15 mins after seeking help and pushing the assistance button. Wonderful customer service! Most grocery stores just feel like, you know a store. But this store genuinely feels like the workers actually care. There was one checker, Kim I believe was her name was an amazing help to me and my family. Not only did she check through our items with speed, she also had a pleasant conversation with us throughout. I also noticed that she helped other cashiers and other customers, all while being a checker. I asked if she was a manager and she said she was not Kim was a wonderful worker, I even seen her help an elderly woman to her car! read more

This is a decent Safeway - maybe a level 2? I shopped around Target, Walmart, and Costco and I think this Safeway had a larger variety of local, made in Hawaii/Maui products. The chocolates are cheaper at Costco and Target though. I like that this location was easy to drive in and out of and that there is a gas station. read more

The first stop on the road to Hana to load up on snacks for the 10 hour trip. If you would have seen all our group bought for the trip you would have sworn we went grocery shopping for the week! It was a bit over the top. This grocery store was a nice mix of big and local. Great selection of fresh as well as the standards. There is a full isle of beer, wine and the good stuff too. I like it that you can buy alcohol in a grocery store. They have a Starbucks in here and a small floral area too. They are very clean and quick to get you checked out as well. Overall, I enjoy shopping at Safeway but my most recent visit was unexpected. It was a Friday, it was expected to be busy since the deals are so great on Friday's! We got wings since their salt and vinegar wings so good but when we got to the register to pay near the sushi, Imelda was behind the register obviously distracted "tried" to help us. Normal routine if you shop at Safeway is to enter your number, we weren't prompted to and I thought that was unusual.. Imelda asked us to enter a phone number if we had and I explained that it didn't show up on the machine.. she then asked us again and I repeated myself, it's not there. She then proceeds to enter it manually on her end and once the transaction was done she repeated herself AGAIN saying next time to enter a phone number for the promotions and I again said it wasn't on there. Everyone around us heard her raise her voice at me and instead of making a scene I walked away. Imelda, you work in customer service.. do better. Wings was good though ‍ Went back today 12/15 and had a much better experience.. did the same thing, went up to the counter after getting my wings and Miss Sherwin I believe was her name was so sweet and pleasant to ALL her customers, thank you! read more

Love the new store! Pulling into the parking lot, it has a mainland feel to it and reminded me of my days back in Colorado. Everything is completely brand new and shiny. They have a good selection of fruits, vegetables, dairy, meats, & basically have everything you could possibly need in a grocery store. Like other Safeways, they have hot food selections, a bakery, floral department, a pharmacy, & a Starbucks. What makes this Safeway standout is they have a pretty great poke selection, kombucha on tap, dried fruit, grains, oats, & candies by the pound. They even have their own gas station. I've gotten the pipikaula and the imitation crab poke and both were really good and have the perfect amount of spice. The bakery selections are also on par with the other locations and have really cute and affordable cakes and cupcakes; perfect for any occasion. It's a total upgrade from their previous location in Kahului and is way more spacious and bright. I look forward to coming here again and again. I hear their gas is also one of the cheapest on the island and will have to check that out for myself in the future! read more

Im really likiing this new Safeway. It's huge... brand spankin new. It's nice and clean and the shelves are very well stocked.. workers seem happy. There's a Starbucks on the left hand side of the store close to the restrooms. This is mmt 3rd time here and today was 5 dollah Friday. Perfect for s evening of pupus.. sushi was on special and chicken tooo. We waited at the chicken place no one came around to ask us if we needed any assistance so we left. When my wife and I are looking to really relax and reconnect, Hawaii is always at the top of our list. There is nothing like being in a place that takes you away from the "hustle and bustle" that takes place on the mainland, it literally forces you to slow down (the max speed on the highway is 45 MPH)! Upon arriving in Maui, my wife and I thought it would be a good idea to do some grocery shopping. Since we were staying at an Airbnb with a full kitchen, we figured that we should make the best of our housing and safe some cash by cooking our own meals (on occasion we did indulge in the local restaurants). We stumbled upon this Safeway store that was located 15 minutes away from our room. If you have ever been to a Safeway, you will not find anything terribly remarkable about this location. However, we were enamored by the alcohol section that offered some beer, wine, and hard liquor that is exclusive to Hawaii (unless you want to pay the upcharge fees of purchasing this at your local Total Wine). This not only saved us from running up ridiculously high tabs at local bars, but also allowed for us to travel back with some Hawaiian drank (sorry I couldn't help myself)! As a tip (I will add this to the official "tip" section later), I HIGHLY recommend opening a Safeway rewards account prior to visiting this store. The difference between the non-member and member prices are substantially different, especially when purchasing multiple items. Need an example? Prior to entering our Safeway Rewards card information, our transaction was $229. After entering the Safeway Rewards information, our transaction was reduced down to $134 (that's a saving of a whopping $95)....your welcome! read more

Today is the Grand Opening for the new Safeway Kahului. What a beautiful new store. As you all know, the very old, first Maui Safeway Kahului closed down recently. This Safeway is replacing it just in a different location. It has bigger aisles, great lighting and today they are offering great deals. There are also vendors offering samples such as samples of Maui Gold Pineapple, Meadow Gold Haleakala Dairy iced tea and juice, Valley Isle Kombucha, Boars Head meats and cheeses, Paniolo Cattle Co. steak and Maui Brewing Company is also offering samples of their root beer and island cola. I also got a few reusable bags from a couple of vendors. Yay! OVERALL: Great location, lots of parking, and great customer service. I'm glad I chanced it on my 1 hour lunch break to go check it out. I use this gas station even though I live on the West side as their gas is so cheap when I use my points, cheaper than Costco! 90 cents off per gallon, yes please!! I also like the selection of groceries at this store. The Lahaina store has been empty for weeks (sigh) and this store was like manna from Heaven when I walked in yesterday with so many products available. Tater tots!! Big nope in Lahaina and also surprisingly in Costco, but this store had an embarrassing surfeit of tots available which I took advantage of. Green grapes, yes please. Starbucks to go, no problem. At first glance, this modern Safeway seems more like a share house instead of a grocery store. Their HUGE well stocked spacious isles and ever present bright yellow $ale items for Safeway Reward Members really make you feel you are on a quality store! I was very impressed with the layout of the store and the friendly staff that is eager to serve up great $5.00 Friday deals! Their made to order Breakfast Burritos, are also Huge and delicious! I opted for the Spicy Chipotle Mayo since there wasn't any Salsa. Note to Safeway Management: All burrito bars should have at least a Pico de gallo salsa! After securing my Big Beautiful Breakfast Ham, Egg, cheese, potato and veggie Burrito, I headed over to the deli counter in search of FIVE DOLLAR FRIDAY SALT & VINEGAR WINGS & BBQ'D MINI RIB-LETS! 2 pounds at $5.00 a pound, made for a sweet & savory Friday Kine of deal! Since the new location has opened a few months ago, I've only visited this location a few times...less than 10. I must say that out of the last 5 visits, 3 was to fill up my gas tank. The store itself is so nice, fresh, clean and bright. I need a few more visits to get acclimated where everything is located. I have to say that the refrigerated section on the far right where the frozen food, milk, juice, etc did seem a little more crowded than the fresh produce, bakery section. It was definitely nice to see the coworkers with smiling face and I definitely felt a bit more safer than the previous location. Now that their fuel station is open I may utilize this store more. I mean for every Safeway reward there's $0.10 per reward. The last visit I had $0.60 off the regular price. I mean hey...their gas lasts longer than Costco and I've never seen prices that low since I first started driving. Guess I'll be utilizing Safeway more for that reason! read more

Maui's newest 24/7 Safeway opened on 7/24/19 in the brand new and still being-constructed Hookele Shopping Center. Also a first for Maui is the island's first Safeway Fuel Station which will open in a few months. Because it was opening day, a balloon arch and rose giveaway greeted customers as we entered along with live entertainment and prize giveaways. There are numerous seats and tables along the sidewalk out front. As you enter, to the left is a Starbucks, and in-store eateries The Cafe, Boars Head Fine Crafted Foods, deli, bakery, and pokē counters. I noticed a lot of prepared foods including sandwiches, salads, and even a fried chicken wing bar. Nuts, anyone? They've got a ton of bins to choose from. There were numerous free food samplings including pokē. The right side of the store is home to the pharmacy and Bank of Hawaii, with a second and closer entry/exit. The floral and customer service areas are right in the middle. Aisles are wide and not too high. There are 8 cash registers and 4 self checkouts. This new location is bigger than both the former and Maui Lani locations, but not as gargantuan as Lahaina's newly expanded/renovated store. TIP: The Safeway on Kamehameha Avenue next to Ross closed and moved to this new location. OVERALL: I've never been in a grocery store on opening day and it was surreal to see fully-stocked shelves with everything neat and organized. They'll do great here, regardless of it being out-of-the-way for most central residents. I wonder who'll take the old location's place? read more

I enjoyed attending the Grand opening this morning. It is a definite upgrade from the old store . The sad thing is it has taken this long for us to get an upgraded store like this one with so many options for people on the go. It is your typical layout for Safeway just nicer and roomier. Great nice big store. Only gripe I have is something I've encountered more than once. Double check your ice cream! I get off work and decide to stop by and treat myself to some ice cream. After getting to the isle I noticed a bunch of gooey lidded pints and the clear pints had a layer of defrosted/refrozen ice cream at the bottom. I opted into going toward the end of the fridge and get a set of boxed ice cream bars, only to go home and find they that two are melted to shit. Just a heads up next time you go. If some of the ice cream is melted, chances are they all are. I'd be less upset if this hasn't happened to me more than once. read more

The newest Safeway on the island is big and bright with more stock on the shelves than the Kamehameha location it replaced. I've tried out a lot of new ( to me) brands and haven't been disappointed. The produce department is large ,where you'll have your choice of conventional, organic and local produce. Very Large Super Size Big Box grocery store which has an outside of the isle set up so you have to walk through the whole store to buy items.I feel manipulated by this type of design the lighting is extremely harsh there are no covers over the fixtures and when you drive by the store at night it's just a white LED fluorescent buzz. If this is the state of the art of grocery stores than the state-of-the-art doesn't fit my goals. I do like the staff if it wasn't for the nice staff I'd say I give this place a bad review. The parking spots are narrower than the other parking lotand it's going to be very busy once the gas station opens read more
