Beware of this optometrist and his office. I was Dr. Kuhn's patient when he operated out of Costco, and he recently moved to his own location, a year maybe a year and half ago. Visit #1: Everything felt fine, routine exam for rigid gas permeable and soft contacts, as well as an update to my glasses prescription. I ordered lenses, next door from Costco Optical. After picking up my contacts, it was clear that the prescription was wrong. I initially complained to Costco Optical, but Dr. Kuhn had actually written the incorrect prescription. Visit #2: Dr. Kuhn fixed my prescription, and waived the appointment fee. It was a huge inconvenience, but he was able to get it fixed. After moving to their own office, I called to request my prescription records from my visit back in 2016-2017, the lady who picks up their calls quotes me a $25 administrative fee for obtaining my record from storage as "it is an hour away", and is incredibly rude, as if requesting my patient record is clearly a huge inconvenience to her. After calling to see if I can get the fee waived, she eventually hangs up on me and won't take phone calls from my new optometrist either. It is absolutely awful that I cannot obtain my patient records, by law they are required to have it for a minimum of 7 years, yet they are unwilling to provide a prescription from just two years ago. I would think twice about coming to this office, as it is likely you will receive poor service and never be able to obtain your patient records. read more

Been coming to Dr. Kuhn for a few years now, first year at Costco and then to his new place on Convoy. No complaints until this year. Their "office" is incredibly small so when they overbook or are running behind it's uncomfortably crowded. We arrived on time and were kept waiting 15 minutes to be seen. They blamed this on an emergency walk in. Fine, if that's the case then you call your appointments and let them know you are behind schedule and let them decide if they want to reschedule. You know - common courtesy. I'm sure if I was going to be late they'd expect that from me. The first part of the exam is done by the woman in front and you do it right out in the open. Which is fine I guess when there isn't a bunch of people but I really wasn't down for having an audience, especially the old guy who was staring at me the entire time. People coughing, just not a good experience. The woman was juggling so many people that I felt like I wasn't getting the proper attention and was in a group exam. If the exam was super cheap I maybe wouldn't be as bothered but it wasn't. Anything to do with your health is personal and important and should be treated that way. Dr. Kuhn has been my optometrist for the past 10 years for both glasses and contacts (initially at Costco Optical and now at Sunglass & Optical). I fully trust my vision care needs to Dr. Kuhn. He is very patient​, and answers all of my questions. The prices are very reasonable as I do not have vision insurance. His staff is very professional and always finding bargains/rebates for my contacts. Also, the selection of glasses and sunglasses (well frames) at Sunglass & Optical is quite vast (Definitely better than Costco Optical). This was by far the worst customer service I've ever got! No professionalism at all. I came in exactly 5min late for my appointment and they canceled my appointment and said they couldn't take me. The Asian girl (referring to her so her boss knows how she treats customer) said it exactly like this: " YOU ARE LATE" with such a ugly tone. She offered me another appointment 1hr and 15minutes later, I said I would think about it bc I was dragging my 2small kids with me, I returned few minutes later and the Asian girl working said no I can't give u that appointment anymore. No reason at all, just seems like she was having a bad day and decided to make clients pay for it! This office has no knowledge of what customer service really means. UPDATE: Sure nuff...the glasses my mom got from this charlatan are worse than her 10-year-old glasses. ORIGINAL REVIEW: This guy who does the eye exams has the personality of a rock...and that's probably insulting rocks everywhere.. He has absolutely zero "bedside manner". I went with my mom to get her eyes checked and he calls her name and we both go into his office. I say to him "i'm going to sit in" and he goes "if she wants you to". No shit dumbass...it's my mom, of course she wants me to sit in on the eye exam. I was just saying that to be polite to you so you understand why I am sitting in on the exam. FROM THERE IT JUST GETS WORSE... He fires through the exam in less than 3 minutes. It was amazing how fast he went. Either his precision is uncanny or his ineptness is inherent. We will probably never know since my mom's vision is pretty bad for starters. So after the initial exam they have my mom go back into the main sardine can of an office and have her sit at this little machine. One of the office staffers tells my mom to look through the viewfinder and press a button every time she sees a squiggly line.. The girl is still regurgitating the instructions when her cell phone rings (her fucking cell phone!?) while the girl is giving my 80-year-old mom instructions on the machine. She then proceeds to talk the whole time my mom is taking this assessment. It's really comforting. Later we go back into the examination room with Mr Personality after my mom's eyes have been dilated so he can check for cataracts. He mumbles his way through it saying something about cataracts that are starting to form. So I ask him questions pertaining to them and he blows me off 100% saying "yeah you'll have to have her see a doctor". I realize that dumbfuckle but I'm simply asking you a question about cataracts. But he is onto the next 50 buck eye exam and we get the bum rush out of his office. It was a fucking joke and I feel bad because my mom was hesitant to have me take her to Costco for her eye check up and I assured her it would be just as good as going to an actual eye care practitioner. Sorry mom. At the end of the day, visiting this place is like going to a Tijuana brothel on a busy Saturday night. You're in and your out. You're wallet is a bit lighter at the end and you probably will regret going there in the first place. read more

I am running out of contacts and in order to buy more, I realized I need to have another eye exam. I call this Costco (I had my previous exam in the Chula Vista Costco) because it's a convenient location when I am on my way to visit my bf. I was able to get an 10:00 am appointment. I wasn't told it was the first appointment of the day, nor was I told that getting there on time was super important...nothing. If you've ever been to this Costco, you know that parking is the worst. Even worse than the parking lots in Convoy. Due to that, I walked up to the little office at 10:10 am. The assistant wouldn't take me. What!? Not only that but she told me there wasn't any other openings that day. She simply told me to "hang around and see if any openings came up." Um, no. I am not going to spend my day for no guarantee. That's all she said with an attitude. I would have appreciated if she let me know that appointments were back-to-back and only 10 minute intervals when I booked my appointment. Don't bother coming here. The front office women sucks. Considering that I handle people's calendars for a living and interact with other schedulers, I can fully vouch that they are awful and have poor costumer service. read more

No complaints here, Dr. Kuhn and staff are friendly and professional. I see them about once a year, he asks me the questions about my eyes and career (looking at a computer screen all day), updates my prescription if I need it and sends me on my way. Never really had trouble booking an appointment that fit my schedule and they're open on weekends too. Regarding the negative reviews: - Yes, the office is small. It's inside a CostCo. I've been to similar ones in NJ and NY. It's not supposed to be glamorous, it's supposed to be inexpensive for the customer. - CostCo parking lots are notoriously mad houses. This is not the doctor's fault, nor his staff. Plan accordingly. - Like most physicians, things happen and sometimes you have to wait. NOT HAPPY. I came in for a regular eye exam for contact lenses, and I was in and out in 5 minutes. Two receptionists greet you as a normal robotic routine greeting, doing the initial checking in process. Dr. calls you in, has you read a line or two, and if you can read, your vision is diagnosed! Bam! No switching of lenses, or the whole "which is better...a or b...this or that" which j am accustomed to. Grabs a pair of lenses with your new prescription. I wash up making my way through the tiny office with no direction to put them in. I wear Them, read the board...and he sends me on my way. I swear this is not even my right prescription, Just because i can read something, does not mean i would not be able to read any clearer if i were to experience with other powers. Prescription is sloppy, can't really read his penmanship and whatever he directed me to do, he mumbled his way making sure i didn't understand. Horrible. I came to Dr. Kuhn a year ago. I came with the intention of getting contacts and had also lost my glasses. This was the fastest examination I have ever been through. He was friendly and made conversation however my prescription is completely wrong. My left eye was always better than my right but the prescription he gave me were the same for both eyes. Don't quite get the negative reviews. Yes the office is tiny and busy, but if you want a waiting room experience you can pay more and go elsewhere. I've seen Dr. Kuhn for over ten years and find him to be thorough and very professional. Zero complaints. For the record, Dr. Kuhn and his staff take about 30 minutes for a full work up and examination (usually Dr. Kuhn takes about 15 minutes per patient). Came here on a weekend and saw one of the associates, Dr. Lee. You don't need a costco card to get an exam here, but you will need one to order lenses. They were able to give me a saturday morning appointment with only one day advanced notice, so that was nice. The assistant was nice and I saw the optometrist after a wait, but it wasn't unreasonable. I was told about a new type of toric lenses for astigmatism and they ordered a pair for me to try. I got a prescription for my usual type of contact and the new type. I was out of there and on my way after about 15 minutes. I felt like the exam was thorough and Dr. Lee was very informative and professional. Some things that would've made it a 5 star experience: if they had samples of the lenses already in stock so I don't have to come back to pick them up. Also, I wasn't offered any samples, but if you ask then they have plenty. I come to this office because ordering contacts at costco is much cheaper than all the other competitors and the cost of the exam is also very reasonable. However, I just checked and there are online sites that beat costco, so make sure you do some comparison shopping before ordering lenses or contacts. read more

I have gone to Dr. Kuhn twice and both times I did not get a service. I felt rushed and Dr. Kuhn showed absolutely no interest in explaining to me anything. My first contact lens prescription was filled out wrong and I had to go back and request a corrected one. His staff was also very unprofessional when I called. I had to wait about 5 minutes before the receptionist told me to call back later since they were very busy. When I read all the negative reviews, I was pretty apprehensive about making an appointment here. But I was in a tight bind and needed my contact prescription ASAP and my regular optometrist office didn't have an appointment till over a week later. This place was close by and could take me in within a few hours. So I went, and yes, the office was small but it's not like I planned to stay there for hours and make myself at home. It had all the essential things needed to run - talk about maximizing the space you got! Anywho, I was expecting to meet a "rock", as so many people have described the doctor being, but I ended up getting let down by a smiling and occasionally joking Dr. Kuhn. Either people got him all wrong or he must have read these reviews and instilled change in himself. See! People can change! Give the guy a break! The staff was also welcoming, unlike what the reviews said. Was it me? Was I bringing out the positivity and happiness from these so-called stone-cold people? I'd like to think I have that effect on people, but I shouldn't take all the credit. Minus 1 star for the lady at the desk who had her cell phone on the loudest setting. She was helpful, welcoming, and attentive with customers, but we didn't all need to know when she was receiving a text. Lady, you could easily hear the phone if it was on vibrate since the place was so small. And it's just more professional to keep your phone on silent or vibrate while at work. Dr. Kuhn moved from Costco to a new office in Sunglass & Optical Warehouse, but still provides the same excellent customer service. The examination was quick, less than 15 minutes. Dr. Kuhn gave me a sample pair of Acuvue Vita lenses to take home as well as samples of contact lens solution and eye drops. I ordered my contacts through his office and Maryann completed an $80 rebate for me. The process was seamless and the staff is always friendly. I highly recommend Dr. Kuhn! read more

I don't think some of the fellow yelppers commenting on this business understand how yelp works. It's designed to talk about the business itself. Example: how is the quality of what is being sold or practiced, are costs reasonable, how is the service and so on. Yelp is not designed to talk about a person's personal attributes (which includes personality). When that happens, it's called bullying! Now onto the business...I think this place is great! I have been seeing Dr. Kuhn now for a couple of years. The staff is great and I have full trust with the doctor. I'm terrible and are usually late coming in (after my prescription has expired), and he always gives me sample contacts in my prescription to go home with. You also can't beat the cost! A typical contact and glasses exam runs anywhere from $130 to over $200 and that could also be if your medical insurance covers eye exams! He's only $79 for both! i do believe you have to have a Costco membership to be seen by this business, but don't hold me to that. read more

Dr Kuhn is the best! Let me start by saying that he and his staff took every precaution for COVID-19. They gave me a new mask, only had one customer at a time, and sanitized all areas frequently. Rest assured, they ensure a comfortable and safe experience. I came to see him for a contact lens exam. He and his staff are extremely friendly, willing to answer any questions you have, and have very reasonable prices. I am surprised that he does not have better reviews given my experience. doesn't even deserve a star. i usually don't write reviews, but i want to make sure people are aware of what they're getting themselves into and that no one has to go through what i just experienced. i'm never coming back here. i really regret not reading some of these reviews before i decided to get an eye exam here. BOTH receptionists have NO idea what good customer service is. they're rude and act very unprofessional. they barely acknowledge you when you walk in that teeny tiny office. i was in the middle of a sentence and she just cuts me off by picking up the phone. usually, people would say "sorry" or "excuse me" if the phone is ringing, but she just straight up ignored me. 6 months ago, i had an eye exam for my contacts prescription with "dr." kuhn. (ugh it pains me to see that he calls himself a doctor.) i told him that my eyes have been bothering me. they were dry, itchy, and it felt like there was sand scratching them when i blinked. he took only 2-3 minutes to look at my eyes and said that he didn't see anything wrong. he suggested using eye drops regularly because it may have been just a case of dry eye. so i took his word for it, because after all, he was licensed -____- i learned my lesson. i went to get a second opinion from an opthamologist -- someone much more educated. i had an eye condition caused by poorly fitted contacts. about a month ago, my vision was blurred. it was like looking through a dirty window. my cornea was inflamed for days. for 6 months, i didn't know that i was developing keratitis because "dr." kuhn said that i just had dry eyes and nothing else. today, i went back to "dr." kuhn to get my contacts refitted. he pretty much refused to give me a fitting even though i had a note from my opthamologist (he rudely said "i don't need to look at that"). he was so adamant that he was right. i reminded him that i had already told him about these symptoms 6 months ago. all he had to say was "you should have come to me earlier". well SORRY for trusting your poor judgment in the first place when you said that there was nothing wrong with my eyes. what a joke. i agree with all the negative reviews. if you care about your eyes, don't come here. go see an opthamologist instead. if money is tight, go to another costco location. you only get one set of eyes, so don't let them near this guy. read more

Worst Costco eye experience I've had. I was going back and fourth between one and two stars because the staff was "nice." Here's the breakdown: Pros: -I got an after work appointment within three days of calling. -The receptionist and the doctor were very nice. Cons: -The office was super busy, and in my opinion, over booked. The seating waiting area was full. -I was forced to wait 25 minutes (after my appointment time) before being called for testing. Big pet peeve of mine. I made an appointment for a specific time and I think it's rude that I was forced to wait nearly a half hour without them even acknowledging it. No one said, sorry we are running behind. They just acted like you are suppose to wait that long. Not cool. -This place made me feel like it was a cattle call. I spent less than five minutes with the doctor. They move you in and out in moments. It's all about getting you in and out to see as many patients as possible. I do not feel the exam was thorough or accurate. The part of the test where they show you different slide options consisted of two total examples. At all previous appointments with other doctors, I've been shown no less than 10 or 15 of the "which is better options." -He said my prescription is lower than what I currently have now. Yet I feel my eyes straining and have had to make the documents larger on my computer screen to ease my head pain. Hmm... Overall, I feel like I wasted an hour of my life and $49. I will be making an appointment somewhere else for a second opinion. Don't waste your money. Go somewhere else. read more

I would leave ZERO stars if i could!!! I was going to order contacts from 1800contacts however my prescription had just expired. Against my better judgment I decided to come here for an exam and prescription- horrible idea!! After looking at my eyes for approximately 1 minute, the "dr" said my eyes looked dry and irritated (dry eye only- i use drops!) and that He couldn't possibly finish examining them and write a prescription unless I see an ophthalmologist first-- but get this!! He still wanted me to pay for the exam and Rx that didn't happen. Crook! I told the office I would pay upon completion of the exam and Rx when I returned from ophthalmologist. I have been coming here 15 years and I'm ashamed I ever gave them any business-- they do not deserve any. You wouldn't pay for 1/10 of a haircut, and you aren't liable to pay for an incomplete partial exam either which is missing the EYE examination and Rx!! He must think the people who come to his office are complete idiots to swallow his BS and agree to pay for imaginary exams with no Rx or eye examination!! I will NEVER EVER go here again and I will report this thief and charlatan to the Better Business Bureau. He is not a doctor, he is a crook!!! Dr. Kuhn is so devoid of bedside manner, it's a little jarring. He doesn't like talking because he is going SO FAST. And you still will have to wait because he is so overbooked. It's really a move-them-in, move-them-out mentality. But, you can get a leisurely, thorough exam at other optometrists for just $10 more around town. Terrible, terrible customer service. I made a follow up appointment because my new contacts were not properly correcting my vision. So I show up and get taken back to the exam chair. Literally 30 seconds later, after having me look through two sets of lenses, Dr. Kuhn tells me my eyes have gotten worse and he will write me a new prescription. I start to ask him some questions (like should i be worried) and he cuts me off. I try to ask again, but he literally stands up and shows me the door. 11 years I have been going to Dr. Kuhn (ages 16-27) and he can't spare a few minutes for someone WHO MADE AN APPOINTMENT. How long did they schedule me for? 2 minutes? That was strike one. I don't live in the area, so the clerk says she will mail me sample contacts to try out the prescription. Great. A week later, my contacts are in and they let me know they are going to ship them. Great. A week after that, I call to see if they were sent out. The clerk tells me, no they haven't been. I say "you mean you still haven't sent them?" in an incredulous but polite tone and the clerk just explodes at me about how hard her job is and how she has to work all alone. I try to get a word in edgewise and calm her down but she just hangs up on me. Strikes 2 through a million. I call back. More of the same. It turns out that she would have to go through a lot of trouble to mail them to me, but how am I, as the customer, supposed to know that? Why did she offer the service in the first place? Anyway, I ask to talk to her supervisor and she informs me that she is it. I know that much is true because I've been there a million times (service is usually adequate, convenient). About five days later, i finally get my contacts (so count it, i've been living about 20 days with blurry vision). they were shipped in a regular envelope. just the contacts. no paperwork, no packing, no nothing. of course the envelop was ripped to shreds my correct sample prescription contact case was torn open as well. I'm not paranoid, but the way the actual plastic contact holder was "torn" looked like it was cut from the bottom on purpose. Anyway, I'm back to square one with vision. strike a zillion. Although the office is small the staff invites you to browse the store while you wait for your appointment.
