I had to ask multiple times for my prescription. First time, when I had my eye exam, their system was down, then on the phone a couple times. Finally had to go in and wait for them to print it. Turned out they only gave me my reading prescription, which is so light I don't really wear glasses to read. But, I do need glasses for distance - especially driving. So now I have to go through the rigmarole to get my distance prescription. I feel like they were punishing me for not buying eyewear from them. They could improve by being more customer friendly and not focus everything on buying glasses from their store. Sorry, but I am switching to another provider. read more

I am so grateful for Newport Optometry! Dr. Tran is extremely knowledgeable, and he's so kind and patient with all of my questions about my vision. He really takes the time to listen and then explain, sometimes in different ways if I'm having trouble understanding eye physiology. He makes sure I leave feeling as reassured as possible. I am a long time client, but I am switching offices because of the lack of organization and customer service front desk staff have. They had my eye prescription incorrect, the same they tried overcharging for! I called earlier this week to simply re-order contacts, I kept getting transferred to a different representative, having to restart the same conversation twice. Then they wanted to claim more money that front desk had previously said my insurance would cover, when I already paid out of pocket. I sent an email requesting my prescription and feedback to Andrea Escandon and still haven't heard back. My new optometrist office then followed up with them because 1) Newport had my zip code incorrect and 2) My eye prescription was incorrect!!! The new office was actually able to offer me a rebate on my contacts order. Instead of being overcharged for services at Newport, I am receiving $100 rebate elsewhere. You've been warned. read more

I have been coming to Newport Ave Optometry for years and have never been anything other than very happy with the care I've received. First off, the front desk staff is always friendly, knowledgable, and helpful. They keep that place running like a well-oiled machine! I see Dr. Chris Johnson who is both friendly and professional. The exam is quick and thorough and he's always happy to answer any questions I have. Their glasses selection is massive and they assign someone to help you pick out frames (which I always find super helpful). My last visit, I was able to pick up my new glasses about an hour after my appointment! It would take this office closing to get me to go anywhere else for my eye care! read more

I've been a yearly cash paying long time customer here probably 15+ years and the service at the front desk lately has been a little less than good. I'm looking for a new eye doctor now unfortunately. I just walked in to schedule a new contact eye exam and pick up a box of contacts. The front desk gal wouldn't give me my usual bio infinity contacts (that I've worn for at least 10 years without ANY changes) because my last visit the doctor randomly changed my prescription to the energy lens (SAME EXACT PRESCRIPTION!!! He only changed the brand) Which I didn't like at all. I mentioned to the front desk gal that I need to schedule a new eye exam and to please give me a temporary pair of contacts to hold me over since I'm currently wearing a ripped contact & I have don't have any eyeglasses right now! It's kind of important that I see. Well I was polite about the whole thing and explained I just need a temporary pair and I will make an appointment for a new exam (this has NEVER been a problem in the past) she refused to help me and now I have to pray this contact doesn't rip any further while I get into a new eye doctor. I'm super disappointed, my visits here use to have a small OB town family feel where the front desk help knew you and cared about you. Sad for my OB town. read more

I have been a regular client for almost twenty years. I understand there is a new owner. My husband transferred to another eye clinic last year after a terrible experience here. I decided to give them another shot since my last visit two years ago was good. Unfortunately, I now completely understand why he chose to leave. This recent visit was awful. The front desk staff is downright mean and dismissive. I still haven't received my contacts--despite having paid for them--and no one has bothered to communicate what's going on. I've spent hours calling and trying to follow up, only to be met with indifference or brushed off entirely. It's been nearly three weeks since my appointment, and I'm still waiting. I understand that mistakes happen, but the way the front desk staff handled the situation was completely unacceptable. I have been coming in for 5 years now never had any issues. The staff are friendly and attentive... and it's a whole new crew. I just have some minor criticism. This last time, I had to return 3-4 times with a second examine. Not sure what's happening here but eventually they made it right, but it was a total pain in my ass to wait so long to get my glasses. I appreciate the hard work and I would consider returning here but I am on the fence about not returning for future exams or glasses. I forgot to mention they broke my Prada glasses (my fav glasses) and I know this was a risk but I didn't think it would happen to me. They gave me a 25% discount to buy new frames but I don't think it was enough with the time spend going back and forth with the wrong prescription and wrong type of lenses put in. They even forgot to give me back my sunglasses lenses and made up for it by making a new set (but it has a prescription therefore I would not be able to wear my contacts with these for sunglasses). Overall they made it right in the end after multiple attempts but it took months for this to happen. They don't have great designed selections and it's very limited. I settled for this cheap plastic frames and still cost me over $150; also, I don't like it but need to wear it because I paid so much. I needed a second pair of glasses (since they broke my other one) so I just gave in to use The 25% discount. To be honest, that was appreciated but I think I should have gotten a new pair (brand name) for free since they broke my Prada ones. Anyway, not a 5 star review and will not be coming back after all the considerations. In conclusion, limited frame selections, inconsistency and will try somewhere else. read more

Great service and very friendly staff! We stopped by without any appointment and asked if anyone could help us fix a horribly broken pair of glasses. The staff dropped what they were doing and took the glasses in the back. We were convinced that the glasses were irreparably destroyed. To our awe, the staff member came back with our glasses in almost perfect condition, almost as if they hadn't been stepped on the night before. I have used Newport Optometry for about 15 years and always been very happy. My children have always been treated well too. Unfortunately, I bought a pair of prescription Rayban glasses in April 2024 (not cheap) and the screw kept coming out. I have had to take time off work because I have had to go in at least four times to have it put back in. Bc it kept coming out, we used a little glue at home to see if it would keep it in place. I did not know this would invalidate my warranty. The manager told me I need to bring them back in - again. No offer of a replacement or a credit. Just that they will try to fix it again. This is a pair of glasses that was defective from the start. I'm not going back in bc this is ridiculous. Now I'm out a pair of glasses and good money for them. I won't go back, unfortunately. read more

Stopped by today to see if my glasses were ready. I had called earlier in the week and they said they were not. Previously when they were ready they didn't call me. So today on my walk, stopped by to check. Front desk reps were on the phone, so I asked a man who I assume is one of the salespeople. He checked and said they were not ready. When I asked why, he seemed irritated and said "don't know, sometimes they are out of stock". But this is the kicker. He said "don't come back, we'll call you when they are ready". Seriously dude, who says that? I will be going elsewhere where they respect me and appreciate my business. read more

I have been going to Newport Optometry for some time, approximately 5+ years. Over the last 2 years there has been a significant decline in the front office staff. Last year with the person helping me find glasses and this year just trying to get my trial contacts. I know things happen, but the absolute absence of giving a crap about satisfying a customer is beyond ridiculous. The fact that "I don't Know" is an acceptable answer. Not great! I've been going to optometrists and ophthalmologists for over 30 years and couldn't believe how my vision improved in just one visit with Dr. Chris Johnson. My son used to see an Opthamologist for 12 years but I switched him and my husband, to doctors, Jared Hagan, and Chris Johnson, respectively because of my experience. Their expertise, care, and professionalism is second to none. Moreover, it must be known to all, opticians Marlaena and Arturo (lab supervisor) will have you leaving with confidence, about your lens choices. I have been coming here for over twenty years, and now I have moved my family's (of 5) business elsewhere. Robotic, rude desk staff and worse, a real lack of understanding of insurance coverage and willingness to acknowledge their own mistakes. In the past few years, it has also become evident that the business is working every angle it can to squeeze you for as much as it can. So disappointing - simply go elsewhere. I've been going to Newport Avenue optometry for the past 5-6 years. Their staff has always been very friendly and I love being able to help support a local business. My must current visit I had Dr. Johnson as my optometrist and I was very happy with the service he provided. After getting my vision checked we recommended some contacts which still today fit very well without any eye irritation. I was given a week supply and left. The lady that rung me up told me in case I'm the future I have issues with my contacts that I can always return them and get new ones. Such good people! If I could give 10 stars I would! The customer service and sense of urgency here is amazing! Quite literally, I owe my Cabo trip to these guys! I noticed on my layover (at San Diego Airport) on my way to Cabo that I totally left my contact lenses and case in the bathroom at SFO. Thankfully I was wearing my glasses but i had already planned an epic snorkeling adventure in Cabo... which definitely isn't as fun when you can't see. Thankfully I had a copy of my script in my email and these guys were able to get me in with 5 days worth of contacts that I could use for my trip. Overall, a very good experience. Convenient location if you live in Ocean Beach with minimal wait time. Also, good selection of frames with a wide range of price points. The only issue I had was when I received my glasses they were extremely difficult to adjust to and I let the person helping me know how blurry my vision was. She told me that I would adjust to it. Subsequently, it took two more visits and Dr.Johnson trouble-shooting the situation; he discovered that my glasses had the wrong prescription. The issue was finally addressed and I received my new pair 3 days later. read more

Unfortunately I went back during the height of COVID And my experience wasn't great. He kept touching the front of his mask and then almost touching my eyes. I had to ask home to wash his hands. My glasses prescription was too strong and it still bothers me but I'm due for another exam soon and plan to get it fixed. read more

Had a great experience yesterday at Newport Optometry! Parking was easy. Amy and Susan up front are super friendly, made the check in process quick! Got called back right on time and started with our pre-testing. Hannia even explained the machine to my son, it was sweet. Dr. Johnson did my eye exam and was so thorough and friendly, it actually made my eye exam fun! Daniel helped my son find his first pair of glasses, brought him lots of options/brands to choose from. Such a disappointing place of business. From the start they try to upsell you on every single service. Once they found out I have great vision insurance, they tried to take advantage of that by selling me contacts and glasses. I didn't need either at the time so they went on to try and sell me sunglasses. Since I had lost mine in a recent move I decided to look around. They made it seem like my insurance would cover sunglasses that are polarized so I decided to order some. After 6 weeks of not hearing back, I called their office to see if the sunglasses were in and sure enough they were. I requested they ship the sunglasses since they hadn't reached out to let me know they were in. When I finally received the sunglasses, I put them on and I couldn't see anything out of the sunglasses. They appeared to have added a prescription to the sunglasses. I called their office the next day and was unable to get a hold of them. Multiple days of calling later someone from their front desk finally picked up the phone. I explained the situation and she told me the tech helping me would need to get back to me. I waited for 2 days and did not get a call back. I finally called back again and was able to speak to the tech. She told me the sunglasses are prescription which I was never made aware of since the only added featured discussed was polarized. She said my insurance was already charged and that I would need to bring them back in. Unfortunately, I have COVID and am unable to bring them back in the near future. I also figured since this is their mistake that the least they could do is have FedEx come pick them up for return. They refused to do that and demanded that I bring the sunglasses back into their office despite having COVID. Apparently doing right by any of their customers isn't a priority. I have called my Insurance to file a report against them because I believe they pushed me to order something I didn't know I was ordering, in addition to asking me to risk my health and others. It's a shame how desperate they are for business. read more

Been a devoted customer for 20 years, love wearing fashionable eyeglasses purchase many designer brands solely from OB optometrist and have spent lots of $$$$$$ at this business. but sadly this business is not the same. Unfriendly staff and lack of willingness to help customers and their lack of interest in keeping the good customers with a smile, finally pushed me to stop supporting them as my local optometry.
