Probably the best, most refreshing shaved ice I've ever had and certainly my favorite food experience I had while on the Hilo side of Big Island. "The Local" (soursop and lilikoi shaved ice topped with huapia cream) was the perfect choice on a hot and humid day. I've never had soursop before but the taste was quite subtle and mild compared to the lilikoi (passion fruit) flavor and the huapia cream (tasted like a thick, coconut flavored whipped cream) complemented both flavors very nicely. I also added papaya chunks on top for an extra $1 and it was super sweet and fresh. I stopped by here this past Sunday afternoon with my wife while in Hilo. Kula Shave Ice is sort of associated with the farmers market and is one of the three stalls located in their "food building". Since they are a stall there isn't much to talk about other than the fact that you go up, order and sit down until your name is called. Once it is, you collect your food and sit down to eat. For a snack on this day my wife and I decided to split a regular shave ice with coconut and honey lilikoi flavors. Within a couple of minutes of ordering our food was ready. Since Kula Shaved Ice is all organic, I expected the syrups to be real and they did not disappoint. The coconut syrup was nice and creamy while the passion fruit had a bit of sharpness which was mostly covered by the honey's sweetness. As for the ice itself, well, I think that the first layer was a little tough to get into. Perhaps they molded it a bit too much? However once you were past that the rest was nice and finely shredded and it worked out quite well. The bottom line for me is that I would stop back here again in the future. I loved the fact that Kula Shave Ice is organic and so they used fruit syrups and look forward to trying them again the next time I am in Hilo. read more
