Kula Shave Ice has my favorite acai bowl in the entire world. I haven't found another place that makes a poi acai bowl, but the combination of flavors and textures in this bowl is top notch. The thick and sour poi pairs perfectly with the sweeter acai. All the crunchy toppings are the perfect addition, especially the mac nuts!

GREAT shaved ice spot. It was crowded on a Friday around noon, but great vibes! Very casual, right next to the farmers market so there's a lot of nearby seating and a restroom as well. Lots of flavors and topping options! Regular size with two flavors was $9. Loved the haupia cream as an additional topping for $2. The POG was a great flavor. The flavors were really strong and saturated, one of the best shaved ice we had on the big island!

I'm always on a quest to find the best shave ice in Hawaii which led me here. My husband and I shared: - The Local - The Kula Rainbow with Condensed Milk The flavors of the Kula Rainbow were my favorite, but I loved the Haupia Cream top on the local. That kind of topping is less common from what I've seen. This is the best shave ice I've had on the Hilo side of the island and I'll definitely be back next time I visit Hawaii.

Kula Shave Ice has been and still is my favorite shave ice place of all time. Unlike most stores, Kula makes their own flavor syrups from scratch, giving it bold and authentic flavors vastly superior to mass produced artificial ones. I am sad to see their non-fruit based flavors no longer offered (like golden milk/tumeric) but happy that this business was booming with locals and tourists alike. Highly recommend Kula Shave Ice as the best shave ice location in the state.

Of all the shave Ice, kula was my favorite. My kids talk about the quality and texture of ice--for me it's all about flavor and great local choices. I shared an Ube and guava--both flavors tasted natural and fresh, plus the mochi AND the haupia topping just made a delectable dessert. And to boot, Hilo farmers market right there! Lots of covered seating around the area too.

Hands down my favorite shave ice spot!! Their flavors taste so much better because it's derived from REAL fruit. And they also do a diligent job at making sure the syrup is coated throughout the shave ice so there's no dry spots. Highly recommend!!!!

Brah, real FRUIT flavored shave ice thats melts in the mouth!?!?! THIS is the place to try at least once during your stay on Hilo side of Big Island. Came here during a soccer tournament and during the hot weekend from morning till late afternoon, we wanted to try something new and COOL. Seeing the pictures and good reviews on Yelp knew that this was the place to be. Aside from shave ice they also offer delicious acai bowls and coffee!!! There's also food within the same hut as well for a complete meal. We came on a Sunday late afternoon during the summer and it was popping! However the line moved fairly quickly and their pick up system is with a buzzer so you didnt have to crowd around the small pick up area. Their known for their natural fruit shave ice flavors and the ice itself was shaved down smooth as honey. You can pick from two sizes: Keiki and Regular. You can also add your own toppings from condensed milk, chocolate shell, mochi. Adding a filling with the ice cream is also a MUST! They have preset menu flavors or create your own! My go to is the regular shave ice with strawberry, mango, guava flavors, condensed milk topping and vanilla ice cream. Their wait for our order of 3 shave ice and 1 acai bowl was about 10-15 minutes. They have table benches within the hut and also nearby under a roof behind their establishment. Also nearby was a small outdoor market with small businesses that we also supported. Happy to support local and will definitely come back during our next trip to Hilo, Hawaii.

One of the best desserts I've had in Hawaii. I got one of the specials called The Hapa. It's chocolate ice cream, coconut shaved ice with chocolate shell and coconut on the top. Oh my goshhhhhhh. No notes. I died and went to heaven eating this. Perfectly balanced with lots of fun textures. SO GOOD. I'll be dreaming about this shaved ice treat when I'm back on the mainland. My husband got a pog one and he didn't like his quite as much because the li hing mui topping is homemade and he wasn't a fan in this case.

Got the Hilo Acai bowl and then made our own shave ice. Service is pretty fast, they have some seating but be ready to share with others. The Acai bowl was super refreshing, filled to the top and produce was excellent. I loved the touch of macademia nuts. I'd recommend the shave ice in local fruit flavors. Both were super refreshing and filling- expect inflated prices though.

Delicious shaved ice! I got the kids' size keiki ($8 and it was a large portion) with pandan and POG seasonal flavors and haupia cream (coconut whipped cream) for an additional $2. I loved the haupia cream--it was thick, rich, flavorful, and creamy. Expect lines and not enough seating, but it's fine--you can walk around the Hilo Farmer's Market!

Food: We got the Kula Rainbow which is with mango, strawberry and blueberry syrup on top and vanilla ice cream as the filling. The blueberry syrup is on the sweet side and not a big fan but the rest is fantastic! Their vanilla ice cream is made from scratch as you can see vanilla seeds in it and it tastes very creamy! Service: common and friendly Ambiance: outdoor seating only. The whole deco is colorful and vivid. Be careful with sticky tables and benches though.

Shaved ice place at the little market in Hilo. Pretty good, and good prices. They have some great flavors it was hard to decide! We had the sunrise slushey and added Pineapple and it was soo good and refreshing, and also the Kula Rainbow! The vanilla ice cream was a great addition. When B was done with his I just combined them All and they were all tasty flavors. There is some seating outside along with other food options. Right next to the town like Saturday market with vendors.

By far, one of Hawaii's best shave ice spots. I recommend ALL my friends to go here when they visit. All of the syrups are natural and organic (something you don't get at most shave ice spots) and NO PLASTIC spoons, bowls, straws, etc. (which I think is huge.. why aren't ALL food establishments doing the same??) Organic and environmentally sustainable, they've got it right. I highly recommend the lilikoi flavor. And add the vegan coconut gelato and mochi! SO good! read more

I got the local. It was perfect for the hot and humid Hawaiian weather. It was the size of a whole meal, so I would recommend this for lunch or breakfast. The syrups tasted light and not overly sweet. The cream was perfect. Could not have asked for a better shave ice experience! read more

Five stars for the ice cream - maybe one for the shave ice. Very disappointing. Because they bill themselves as a shave ice place, I give more weight to the shave ice score. My shave ice down by the seawall in Kailua-Kona was easily 100 times better. My Kula Shave Ice was big granules of ice, frozen solid, with a hard outside, so the syrups did not penetrate the ice; more like a snowcone purchased out of a freezer in a midwestern 7-11 than what I would expect from a shave ice place in Hawaii. Only the outside half inch or so had any flavoring - and it was hard to punch through even with the metal spoons they provide. But the macademia nut ice cream was really good, so it wasn't a complete bust. read more

Unique flavors and variety! I ordered a lilikoi soursop shaved ice with vanilla ice cream and coconut cream. It was very good and since there wasn't enough ice cream for a big scoop he generously didn't charge for it. There was still plenty of ice cream in the shaved ice. The lilikoi portion even had seeds in it proving how fresh and natural the ingredients are. This is a must-try if you're in the area! :) read more

We weren't looking for this place but it was hot and shaved ice at 9 AM was a great idea. Also, it was right at the Hilo Farmer's Market area. The syrup they used on the shaved ice tasted all natural, with no high fructose corn syrup, and the coconut milk on top was a nice addition. I've never had shaved ice that was as fruity and delicious as this one. read more

Oh my gosh! So good. I wish I could give them 7 stars. We had an assortment and everything was great. They had vegan coconut gelato, which by itself was unbelievable, but in the center of their shaved ice with fruit syrups made in house from real fruit and it's a homerun! I got passionfruit and strawberry, the flavors were delicious. Two of my boys got just ice cream, one in a waffle cone, one in a bowl, and it was all great, something for everyone. Perfect spot to stop before we hit the road back to Kona. The girls working were so sweet and helpful. I will definitely be back but in the meantime you should visit them too, it's that good!! read more

This place exceeded our expectations. We had the Big Island Love and it was delicious. The mangos tasted really fresh and good. My children created their own shaved ice and they loved it. This stand is located next to a poke and grill stand and they share some covered picnic tables. There is no indoor seating. The farmers market is next door as well. Highly recommend! read more

The absolute best shave ice in Hilo. Maybe on the whole island. We love shave ice and cold treats, but hate the artificial flavorings and food coloring in most of these treats. Kula has homemade syrups, all organic and with many local flavors. This is authentic and delicious. I like everything I've tried but Lilikoi Dreamsicle might be my favorite. They also serve some Fab ice cream (only $2 a scoop!) if you don't like the ice. Their delicious organic cold brew coffee is the icing on the cake--or the cap on the ice if you will. LOVE that this is available when we are in the mood for a health(ier) treat. read more

Meet the Business Owner: Tiffany G.

Tiffany and Luke Golden started this business because they were concerned about the unhealthy ingredients in "traditional" shave ice and wanted to offer people (and their own kids) a healthy alternative. I don't think much -- if any, additional sugar was mixed in, because the smoothie wasn't especially sweet. If you're on vacation and haven't been eating particularly healthy, nor getting enough fiber in your diet, it's a good idea to give your system a boost with one of these smoothies. Smoothies here are priced in line with your average smoothie -- at around $13 or so. If you're looking for something else besides a smoothie, the menu here includes non-smoothie items as well, like juices, açai bowls, and various protein bites.

I purchased a juice pack and ended up being two weeks late using it because I was on the mainland after my mother passed away. I was spending that time handling her estate and cleaning out her home. When I explained the situation, there was absolutely no empathy or flexibility. The response I received was essentially, "Oh too bad." What made it worse was that this wasn't my first negative customer service experience here. On a previous visit, I was checking my loyalty points and learned I had earned a $10 reward, and had to use it right then and there. When I asked if it would automatically apply, the employee responded with another dismissive "That's too bad" type of attitude rather than helping me understand the program. Ultimately loosing the $10. I understand businesses have policies, and I wasn't expecting special treatment. However, kindness and compassion cost nothing. During one of the hardest periods of my life, a little empathy would have gone a long way. The juices and products are good, but customer service matters. Unfortunately, after multiple rude interactions, I'll be taking my business elsewhere. I hope management takes a closer look at how customers are treated, especially when they're going through difficult life circumstances.

Staff was friendly from the moment we walked in (which was right after they turned on the "Open" sign). There were fresh flowers on all the tables (so fragrant!) and modern decor. We got the Jus Avo with egg, strawberry smoothie with protein, coconut yogurt parfait, and a monthly special latte made with Koji rice milk, espresso, and rose petals. Definitely also loved that they had samples of basically everything they sell. Also loved, we learned, it was actually the chocolatier himself running the shop when we were there, so all our questions were being answered directly from the source. It also worked out in that they didn't actually *have* any bars of the spicy chocolate out, as he'd just made a new batch and hadn't packaged them yet, so when he learned we were leaving the next day, he pressed one for me right then and there! Sautéed veggies, house-made lentil walnut chorizo, ginger beet kraut, fire-roasted jalapeno cashew crema, fire-roasted tomato salsa, and it's topped it off with sprouts. This whole thing comes with either purple sweet potato home fries or red rice (which we went with the purple sweet potato fries and ended up getting a side red rice. We also got the side kimchi and one egg sunny side up.) And we shared a 16oz Ceremonial Matcha latte as well. This vegan plate is way more than vegan. It's mighty as hell. For those who are still not sure about vegan options will definitely second guess it for something that isn't vegan/vegetarian. It's truly nutrition packed in so many different ways. Once you are done with your meal you'll put your dirty dishes in the designated tub. I like this efficient style of serving food. This place has great vibes as well. A bit hippie-ish where bright dark colors such as purple and red are incorporated into the interior. There is even a stage where bands perform on certain days/times. Quite cool-looking. Bottom line: Gorgeous waterfront vibes and kind staff, but the execution on cocktails and seasoning needs work.

The employee that helped us was friendly, patient and helped us sample many different pokes, answered our questions and made helpful suggestions. I got the shoyu and Korean poke, and my friend got the Korean Marlin. Decent portions and you know it's fresh. Great place for poke bowls.

I stepped in the tiny storefront and placed my custom order and then grabbed a tray of buttermochi that was ready to go. After paying, I asked how long was the wait time and the cashier said 20-30 minutes. Instead of standing around, I went back to the car and hung out with BIL and watched for the people who were before me to get their orders and leave. I waited outside for about 5 minutes before they called my name and my mochi order was ready to go. There were some tourists who came by who didn't want to wait for 30 minutes and were ready to turn around and leave, but I told them there were ready made packages that they could grab and go, the rest of us were waiting on custom orders. They were really happy to hear that and they bought their mochi and headed out. I will definitely call ahead next time I go to Hilo, the wait is small kine humbug, but the mochi is oh so ono! (translated: the wait is an inconvenience, but the mochi is very delicious).

Kula Shave Ice is hands-down my favorite place ever for açai bowls. Every time I go, the bowls are super fresh, packed with flavor, and loaded with toppings. You can really taste the quality in every scoop. The vibes are always good, the staff is friendly, and the presentation is on point. I've tried a lot of spots, but nothing hits like Kula Shave Ice.
