Broken "battle ready" sword. 1 strike to a piece of 3-4" sycamore wood.
    Andrew P.

I placed an order for a sword from Kult of Athena. I had a similar sword that I had acquired from a competitor for roughly the same price, and I wanted to see what KoA had to offer. I received the sword within three weeks and tested it on a piece of sycamore wood. The "battle ready" sword snapped right in half. I sent an email to KoA regarding the break, complete with cross section photos of the sword pieces. No response. I sent a second email three days later, letting them know that I had spoken to some sword enthusiasts that I knew, who said that there likely was a crack. That got a response from KoA who asked for more photos. After corresponding with their rep, Matt, he agreed that it was a defect in the sword. After further correspondence, he said that I could put the value of the broken sword toward a credit with KoA. I decided that I would put the credit toward a different, more expensive sword, rather than get a replacement sword. I told him which sword and asked how I should pay the difference. Four days went by and I received no response. Two more days went by and I called the CS number. One day later, I received two emails, one from Dusty saying she received my call and was going to figure out how to deal with it with their "new program". The second email said that my complaint had been closed. I responded to Dusty, telling her about the closing, and she replied that it was an "honest mistake". She asked for patience while they figured out their "new program". A week went by, and I had to email back, asking if the purchase could go forward and again asking how to pay the difference. Dusty emailed back and said that I could pay via PayPal or CC. I responded that I could do Venmo or CC, and asked how I should proceed. No response. Three days went by, and I sent another email. No response. Three more days went by, and I sent yet another email. No response. The next day, I sent yet another email. Five days later, and I still have no response. The lack of regard KoA has shown to my complaint is absolutely unprofessional. It has been a month, and still there is no resolution. KoA's handling of the situation can't, in any reality, be called "customer service".

BUYER BEWARE! Horrible customer service. Threats of lawsuit. Hostile, rude and oh so worried about their "bottom line". Coupled with their substandard, cheap knock-off wares this is a definite pass. Remember, these guys are only middlemen if you want any of the items on their website go to the manufacturer's page and save yourself a major headache.

Let me say that I love Kult of Athena! I have been collecting swords and medieval weaponry for a while now, and whether it be online or at the store, this is my go to place. They have a great selection, great prices, and a knowledgeable staff. The physical store is currently closed, as they are moving to a larger location, but the online shopping is still great. Whether you are looking for Eastern or Western swords, weaponry from different locations and time periods, costumes, costume weaponry, books, or decorations, this is the place to go. This is a one of a kind store in the Chicagoland area, so if you have any interest in weaponry, you need to check this place out.

If you're too cheap to go to a haunted house, take your kids to be freaked out by all the animatronics in the middle of the store while you shop for a costume.

SKELETONS IN THE CLOSET…read more Spirit Halloween is mostly crap--we know it, they know it. Don't mind me, just airing out my grievances against this chain of seasonal décor stores. I could start by bashing Spirit for charging insane prices, but that's too obvious. Maybe I should dog them on their unforgiving return policy, or the fact that no store ever appears in the same location twice (making it impossible to find the correct spot on Yelp). There's really no point in updating the address, since 9 months from now Spirit will take over (ahem, *possess*) whatever empty business is lying around. This store was on Army Trail Rd near Best Buy/Jo Ann Fabrics, in a shopping area called Bloomingdale Court. I visited in early October, long before the store has had a chance to get trashed by unsupervised children. The big ticket items are looking uglier and uglier, like they're straight off of Wish.com. The demented clowns and shrieking zombies look unintentionally hilarious and reek of a horsesh*t build quality. I stood inside for a solid minute, staring at (what appeared to be) a werewolf-type monster, thinking "what IS this, and why does its growling sound like a broken Nutribulllet??" Many of their products often malfunction, get returned, and wind up back on the shelves. This is especially true with electronics like fog machines or the motion-activated spider, as there's no easy way to repair shoddy wiring. Over the years, I've seen scores of 'open box' discounts that I've been wise enough to avoid. DO NOT buy anything with moving parts from Spirit. A plastic 5ft poseable skeleton was a whopping $100! For that price, you can probably get a REAL skeleton (just ask the props department from the movie Poltergeist ^). The exact same item at Home Depot was only $30; Spirit, care to explain why your stuff is TRIPLE the cost of a competitor? One thing that didn't suck: a set of Ghostbusters window clings ($10) that includes a terror dog, Gozor, the ghost librarian, Ectomobile, Slimer, and the Stay Puft marshmallow man. Also a decent purchase was a ouija board doormat ($21) that was discounted 20% thanks to a mail offer. They had a lot of doormat designs--Stranger Things, Hocus Pocus, Harry Potter, Buffy, etc. The guy at checkout was cool, but his pleasant attitude couldn't mask all the junk surrounding him. Only shop here if you've got a sizeable coupon, and even then be smart about your purchase--odds are good you won't be getting a refund. * TL;DR * To say that Spirit's products are cheap Chinese knockoffs is an affront to China and an insult to cheap knockoffs. Every year in early August, these stores pop up like warts on a mutant's ass, claiming abandoned storefronts to peddle their oft-broken and overpriced wares. By 10/31, the shelves are cluttered with returns marked "15% off due to wires not working", and by November 3rd Spirit has packed up whatever garbage didn't sell and vanishes into the night. Not unlike visiting the apple orchard, dragging these guys on Yelp has become a yearly tradition. I love October, but I hate Spirit for their price gouging practices on bottom-tier merchandise. All stores are virtually the same, and all of them are equally loathsome. ^ yes, they used actual human remains in the climactic scene with JoBeth Williams' character from 1982's Poltergeist. Don't waste your time with the 2015 remake, stick with the original, and remember that at the tail end of the movie those hyper-realistic skeletons bobbing around in the pool were living, breathing people at one point...now that's freakin' scary! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Well, I was shocked this location is still around as the Yelp reviews have been scoring low. But you know what? This store has a great selection. Just needs to keep it cleaner and better organized in the front area (were customers first walk in). The aisle on the far right when you first walk in, is maybe for seasonal items. However it was clustered and dirty near the front windows and sparse on down the aisle. The back of the store is kind of cluttered, but that's where the sale items are located. The check out area is nice but where are the cashiers? Only one was working the front when the line began to get long and someone at the front needed help with some items. Another cashier appeared and the line went more smoothly. This was mid morning in a Wednesday. Maybe the other employees were putting things together in the back? Not sure. Add more cashiers, clean up the cluttered seasonal section and front door area. Maybe the customers will keep returning.

She didn't say "hi" when she arrived: she looked scared to be there. She played a "game" with the kids by taking out a flamingo and telling one kid to hide it and asked me to help her talk to the children. The kids couldn't hear her because she was speaking so low. When it was time to "face paint" she stood there helpless until my sister in law asked her if she needed something and she said she didn't have warm water. But I wonder if she hadn't asked would she have attempted to try. The only time she seemed enthusiastic and talked was when she was going and it was time to ask for her money. I am truly disappointed and feel it was such a waste of money.

To start with the positives: the princess looked fantastic and looked exactly like the character she was portraying. She brought a couple of books and coloring supplies, which the kids enjoyed doing alongside her, and she danced with the girls in a circle. However, one of the reasons we booked with this company was that the initial booking emails highlighted that the princess could provide simple face painting. Unfortunately, when she arrived, she did not bring any face paint. This was especially disappointing as face painting was my daughter's top request. During the event, the princess was fairly passive and required prompting--such as being asked to join in the singing during the cake cutting--rather than taking initiative during key moments. After the party, I followed up with the company to express my disappointment and to better understand what went wrong. They responded that face painting is not guaranteed per their terms and conditions. I explained that this was not clearly communicated and asked what I should have done differently--whether I should have confirmed in advance that our specific princess could provide face painting. Despite sending seven emails and five follow-up texts, I never received a clear response or guidance on this. So while the appearance was visually impressive, the lack of clear communication and follow-through on a key feature left us frustrated. If face painting is a priority for your event, I would recommend confirming it very clearly in advance--or booking with another company that can guarantee it.
