Kumare Restaurant and Bakery 8130 Park Road, South Richmond Overview Kumare Restaurant and Bakery offers a taste of authentic Filipino cuisine with traditional dishes that highlight the rich flavors of the Philippines. Located in a cozy setting, this eatery combines a bakery and restaurant, catering to guests with a range of savory and sweet options. Food Papaitan (Bitter Beef Stew) This traditional stew, featuring beef tripe, tendon, and bile with ginger and onions, delivers a complex, bold flavor that fans of this dish will appreciate. The portion size is generous, and the balance of ingredients reflects a thoughtful approach to an often-underrepresented dish. A commendable offering for those seeking a truly authentic experience. Rating: 8/10 Ukoy Kumare's ukoy arrives as two large fritters of shrimp and mixed vegetables, fried to a golden crisp and served with a side of vinegar for dipping. While the fritters showcase fresh vegetables and have a satisfying crunch, the overall flavor could benefit from additional seasoning to deepen the taste profile. The concept is spot on, but a minor tweak could elevate it. Rating: 7/10 Lechon Kawali A highlight of the meal, the Lechon Kawali is beautifully crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, showcasing the richness of deep-fried pork belly at its best. While the pork is well-prepared and portioned generously, a touch more seasoning would enhance its savory appeal. This dish stands out as a well-executed Filipino classic that offers satisfying crunch and flavor. Rating: 8/10 Tokwat Baboy This combination of deep-fried pork belly, tofu, and onions served in a vinegar-based stew brings a refreshing acidity that complements the richness of the pork. The seasoning is balanced, allowing each ingredient to shine. A delightful dish that offers both texture and flavor in each bite. Rating: 8/10 Garlic Rice The garlic rice is aromatic and well-portioned, serving as an excellent accompaniment to the main dishes. The garlic flavor is prominent without being overpowering, adding an enjoyable depth to each forkful. Rating: 8/10 Ambiance Kumare provides a clean and welcoming atmosphere that sets a relaxed tone for a casual meal. While the space is generally comfortable, one of the tables was unsteady, a minor detail that could detract from the experience. However, overall, the environment feels inviting and well-maintained. Rating 6/10 Price Considering portion sizes and the quality of ingredients, the prices at Kumare are fair and reasonable. Diners can expect value for money here, as the servings are ample and the flavors rich. Service Regrettably, service was the low point of the experience. With only two guests dining, we found the staff inattentive, with no water refills offered and no follow-up on our meal. Improved attentiveness and engagement from the staff would significantly enhance the overall dining experience at Kumare. Rating: 1/10 Verdict Kumare Restaurant and Bakery succeeds in delivering authentic Filipino dishes with robust flavors and hearty portions, making it a strong choice for those seeking a genuine taste of the Philippines. However, the lack of attentive service detracts from the overall experience, leaving room for improvement. With enhanced service, Kumare could become a go-to destination for both Filipino cuisine enthusiasts and new diners alike.

We had lunch with Por Por (Grandma) and a family friend who used to live in the Philippines. Our friend doesn't get to go out for Filipino food very often so we decided that we would try out Kumare restaurant in Richmond together. On the table we had Sizzling Bangus Belly, Manila Style Pinakbet, Calamares, Kumare Rice, Chicken Adobo, Lato Salad, Ginataang Langka, and Halo Halo. Sizzling Bangus Belly: Impressive at first when it arrives sizzling hot on a plate, but when it comes to actually eating it, there's very little fish meat to be found. Manila Style Pinakbet: Why didn't they mention on the menu that there was bitter melon in it? Bitter melon is on my list of Top 5 foods I hate! Calamares: Enjoyed it like I do in most restaurants. Hard to go wrong with deep fried squid! Kumare Rice: Shrimp paste fried rice garnished with shredded mango. I love shrimp and I love mango. Great combination for me. Chicken Adobo: Tender, moist and flavorful. Lato Salad: Never heard of seagrape seaweed before. Saw this on the menu and wanted to try it. They were tiny green spheres. A bit like the fish roe that you might see on top of Tobiko sushi in a Japanese restaurant, only these were green instead of orange. They were crunchy and neat to eat! Ginataang Langka: Jackfruit failed to impress for many years. In the last few years however...ever since I stopped eating meat and started to cook and eat plant based foods, I've suddenly developed an appreciation for Jackfruit. This jackfruit had coconut milk and shrimp paste on it. It was one of my personal favorites from this meal. Halo Halo: Why do people eat dessert after dinner? Is it based on the idea of saving the best for last? Halo Halo was my absolute favourite out of all these dishes. Such a refreshing and tasty treat. A wonderful way to end the meal.  Service: Fair (Not very attentive. We waited a super long time to be able to flag someone down and get our bill. There were hardly any other customers besides us in the restaurant, so it's not like they were super busy. The servers stood around chatting idly with each other.) I say it's fair because when they actually did come around to our table, they were reasonably polite and helpful. Parking: Plentiful and free! Location: Across the street from Richmond Centre, so...very central!

Since I always visit this restaurant, I want to make some updates. Kumare is my first Filipino restaurant go-to since I came to Canada. Its location is within Richmond Center, 8 mins walk from the sky train. I can't count how often I've been there, mostly during breakfast, as I love their silogs; it has the authentic Filipino "agahan" (breakfast) combo. Their sizzling plates, breakfast combo, halo-halo and some pastry are my favourite from their menu, which I believe would lead me to visit or take out from them every time I crave it. I highly recommend their sizzling plates menu; it's flavourful with perfect crunchiness from the sizzling plate; I love the Bangus (milkfish) and tofu sisig. Their silogs are an excellent choice for breakfast. They have an awesome combo of garlic rice +egg + meat (beef, pork, milkfish, and longanisa or Filipino style sausage) + tea or coffee. In summer, I sometimes go there just for their halo-halo, a popular Filipino cold dessert made of crushed ice with various ingredients, including ube halaya, pinipig, kaong, yam, taro, sweetened beans, stripped coconut, Leche flan, evaporated milk and ice cream. They have other desserts to check out as well as cakes, bread and pastries. I like their ube ensaymadas, Brazo de Mercedes and their fresh cheese doughnuts, which they only sell on weekends. These are just my favourites from Kumares, but they do have more Filipino dishes, desserts, bread and pastries to offer. Check them out when your in to try Filipino cuisine.

This visit to kumare surely an excellent one. Had a craving for filipino food and thisnplace never fails. Ordered the pork sisig ( sizzling pork ) crispy pata ( fried pork hock) kumare fish wish garlic sauce and kumare special rice. Pork sisig came perfectly done and not burnt. The fried egg and chili complemented it nicely. Meat was seasoned and tasted tender and crispy. Crispy pata was also done right. Fried to a crispy skin and juicy meat. Best part, was already shredded or meat sorta taken off the bones so you cannjust dig in. The fish was also done well with the garlic sauce added just before serving...making the fish not soggy. The rice rounded up the meal. With green mangoes on top to add a touch of finesse. What a nice meal after a hard days work. Best part...every cost only $50 taxes all in. Happy eating!

Having been my only filipino food experience, i didn't know what to expect but I did leave with the impression that the food is quite fatty and heavy. Of all the dishes we ordered, the favourite of mine was definitely the pork skewer that had a sticky and sweet bbq sauce glazed atop of it. I also enjoyed the panict bihon's flavours and the filling in the spring rolls. I didn't like the pork sisig as much because i could only stand a few bites and the deep fried pork belly left very little meat for me to actually eat. I did love their desserts though being a sweets person especially their hot halo halo that had tapioca, yam and fruit in a sweet coconut milk. Overall, I would like to try more filipino cuisine but there are only select dishes for me since i have no desire for really fatty foods.

This might be one of the best Filipino restaurant I have ever been in Vancouver. If you ever been to Little Ongpin or Pinpin, this place is a must to go. The restaurant is also a small bakery but dont expect too much from their bread/cake. I read some reviews saying this place had bad service. However, I experienced otherwise. We got good service and the food was very good. Ordered Pork Sisig, Crispy Pata and Bicol Express. They were AMAZING. If you consider getting the same, get those with garlic rice. Its a killer combo

This restaurant deserve more than the overall review here. Seems like they have improved alot with their service. Definitely you must raise your hand to get a faster service. This place has good vibes with good music and delicious food. We ordered the pork sisig, crispy prata and the bicol express - accompanied by their garlic rice. Their pork sisig (sizzling hot plate pork) is really tasty and good, comes with lemon and chili on the side. Their crispy prata is sooo crispy (the pork skin) and comes with the sauce on the side that is perfect for it. Bicol express was just okay, I would probably try their Lechon or kare kare next time. Definitely a must try if you like filipino cuisine and you live in Richmond. I would say it is better than Little Ongpin, taste wise. Par with PinPin and Hapag.

I don't understand some of the poor reviews. I find this place decent. Staff are always happy to see you and serve you. The food is authentic Filipino. I love the Kare Kare (dish in peanut sauce). I like that they make it with beef or chicken. I love the lechon kawali ( deep fried pork belly). I love the pork barbeque. I think they have the best pork bbq compared to Pinpin or Little Ongpin. I like the fact that this is also a bakery. I live Filipino dessert specially the ube cake (purple yam cake). The only complain I have is the exhaust. This place can really improve on their exhaust system so customers don't smell like oil after dining.

Lechon Kawali

A good looking restaurant with mediocre food. I enjoyed the atmosphere of the place as my friend says it really reminds her of the typical Filipino family style restaurant. The decorations of the place was duked out in typical IKEA furniture. They tried atleast, and I appreciate that, so they get points for that. The layout of the resturant is what I do not like. Entering you see the kitchen and the "barista" table like place with the bakery goods. I don't seem to like that, but it was interesting and different. The washroom had the weirdest sink ever, you must see it, it was an eye spectacul. We ordered the Pork Sicsig, Chicken Pandan, Pad Thai and the Lechon Kawali. (The lechon kawali really reminded me of Cha Siu Yok) but for sure the Pandan and the Sicsig was AMAZING. I can say these were my favourite dishes of the night. All these dishes amazingly mixes well with white rice, and it made the rice taste better. The only downside is the sauce was not as special as I thought. Just a lot of oil, garlic and onions used. It was really really heavy in oil, but the food was sizzling hot. The food was well made, but I just dislike how the style it is made in. It could just be the origin of the style it is made, but I don't like it as much as I thought I would. The good side is that the place is well kept, clean and tidy. Good atmosphere and a very cute waiter, who is not Filipino but very hot. :P

This was a good experience of Filipino food for my family. They never really tried Filipino food and didn't know if they would like it. I think they've changed thier minds now. The food was very good. We had 4 or 5 dishes and they were all tasty. The Pork sisig was very flavorful and developed a cruncy crust from the sizzling plate. It was my favorite dish. The milk fish was also good and seasoned well. I'm taking away 1 star because the service could be better. You need to flag them down if you needed anything. Our waitress looked grumpy. She could smile more.

the pastries are very dry. Especially the coconut "poop shape" macaroon, and the lipstick bread is dry as well. Also the service is unwelcoming. Okay that's all for today!

I asked my nephew to order leche plan and all I got is a frozen one it was so soggy n

very slow service decent food/ not my favorite place but edible lots of parking family friendly good price for portion sizes if i had to choose dish: spring rolls would I go back? No

Braso de Mercedes. Not too sweet. Just right. I like the texture.

I would love to revisit and try other items when and if we make another trip to the Pacific Northwest. They only accept cash or Canadian debit card. There is an ATM at the shopping mall next door. It reminded me of searching for pineapple buns as a kid. Unfortunately, the experience quickly took a turn. My wife, child, and I stopped in close to closing because my child wanted sesame balls. It was his first time ever asking for them, so we were excited to get a few. When we brought our items to the counter, the staff member curtly told us to grab more pastries, which already felt a bit off. Things became more uncomfortable during checkout. We were told they only accept CAD cards, which is understandable, but when we asked about paying in USD, they agreed at a one to one rate. Not ideal, but we were happy to support a local business. Our total came to 10.75 CAD and we paid with 20 USD. Instead of receiving proper change, we were strongly encouraged to take additional pastries because they did not have change. The staff was quite insistent, and we ended up with several extra items we did not really want. To make matters worse, after piling multiple pastries into my wife's already full hands as she was carrying bags from traveling, we asked for a bag and were initially told no. Only after we returned some of the coins given as change did a box and then suddenly a bag become available. The entire interaction felt unnecessarily pressured and uncomfortable. While both parties were speaking Chinese, I could not shake the feeling of being taken advantage of as an outsider simply trying to support the business. To top it off, the pastries themselves were mediocre at best. It is a shame, because the place has such a nostalgic charm, but the service left a lasting negative impression.
