I finally made it to Kung Fu Kitchen after hearing so many people recommend it, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. We ordered quite a bit so we could try a variety of dishes: the Shanghai pork soup dumplings, shrimp dumplings, pan-fried chicken dumplings, spicy beef ramen, stir-fried noodles, scallion beef pancake, cucumber salad, mango slushy, strawberry cherry fruit tea, Thai iced milk tea, and the chocolate baos for dessert. Everything we had was fresh, flavorful, and came out quickly. The hand-pulled noodles were cooked perfectly, the dumplings were packed with filling, and the spicy beef ramen had so much flavor without being overwhelmingly spicy. The scallion beef pancake was another standout, especially with the dipping sauce, and even the simple cucumber salad was refreshing and well-seasoned. The only thing that wasn't my favorite was the chocolate bao. It wasn't bad by any means--it was just much richer than I expected. The chocolate filling is very decadent, so one was more than enough for me. If you love rich chocolate desserts, you'll probably enjoy it more than I did. Overall, this was an excellent meal, and I can absolutely see why it's included in the Michelin Guide. The food was consistently delicious, portions were generous, service was friendly, and the prices felt very reasonable for the quality. Noodle and dumpling dishes were all good, and they have a huge TV where they screen the men's world cup! ===== We ordered - spicy peanut sauce beef noodle soup (knife cut noodle) - 4/5 - decent soup flavor and the bief pieces were tender; knife cut noodles weren't overcooked - stir friend beef and pepper noodles (knife cut) - 4.5/5 - probably the tastiest item we got; pretty big portion - jiu cai he zi - 3.5/5 - this was solid; you get 2 largeish pieces. - vegetable bao - 4/5 - enjoyed these more than the jiu cai he zi; really tasty, mushroomy filling - crab xiao long bao - 3.5/5 - mostly tasted like pork; upon arrival they looked a little over-steamed based on how the skins looked. Pretty good but pricy - nan gua bing - 2/5 - I've only ever had this without a filling (and they look flattier - these were basically balls), and the red bean filling here really threw me off and made the whole thing overly sweet. This was a good-to-generous amount of food for four people. Staff were friendly and efficient, and I'd probably come back if I were in the area and wanted Shanghainese food. Not sure how I hadn't tried this place sooner, but this is hands down the BEST spot in CT for xiao long bao (soup dumplings). The wrappers were perfect! Not too thick, but not so thin that they broke and spilled the soup when you picked them up. We ordered both the pork and the crab & pork xiao long bao. The pork was good, but the crab & pork was absolutely delicious and easily the standout. It honestly reminds me of some of the soup dumplings I've had in SoCal. The cucumber salad was refreshing and tasty, though pretty standard. It was good, but probably not something I'd reorder for the price. The scallion pancake with braised beef was crispy and flavorful. It usually comes rolled up at other restaurants, but I actually preferred the wrap-style presentation here. It made it easier to eat and the texture stayed nice and crisp. The pan-fried Peking duck buns had an incredibly soft bun with a sweet and savory flavor, though I do wish there had been a bit more duck filling. The spicy beef noodle soup with knife-cut noodles was also solid. The noodles had the perfect chewy texture and were cooked really well. The broth was flavorful, although it wasn't very spicy to me. It also had peanut sauce mixed into the soup, which I'd never had before, but it complemented the broth without overpowering it. The house special stir-fried noodles were probably the only miss for us. They were just okay and not something I'd order again. Service was excellent throughout our meal. They were attentive about refilling our water, and all of the dishes came out surprisingly quickly. There's no dedicated parking lot, so you'll need to find street parking or use one of the nearby paid garages. I was especially excited to finally try this place after hearing so many people compare it to Nan Xiang. I've been to Nan Xiang three separate times and left disappointed each visit. Their soup dumplings always looked beautiful, but the wrappers were consistently too thick for my liking. My friend and I were drawn to the dumplings as we wandered the streets of New Haven during Night Market last month. Kung Fu had a little booth outside of their restaurant and the line was super long, so we decided to wait for a table inside. We ordered the cucumber salad (which I have never seen with the cukes cut into spears!) and each ordered some dumplings. Everything was perfectly cooked and seasoned and I want like 400 more of each. This was a great visit! The service was super attentive and everything came out very fast. Beautiful restaurant! The strawberry cherry was a perfect amount of sweetness, and felt like it never finished. Typically if I'm in New York, I will just stop at Nan Xiang but Kung Fu may have influenced my next visit a bit. The chicken xiao long bao was SO good. The broth inside was perfect in my opinion (and my friend's haha) the vinegar was pretty much unnecessary. I honestly can't wait to get them again. The chocolate ones were different! The food is great! Everyone is always very friendly. However, the pacing and timing of ordering and getting cashed out is in need of improvement. We've dined here a couple of times now and while the staff is very nice it takes a little while before anyone comes to take a drink order. Twice now, we have sat and waited and waited for our check to pay for our amazing food. The waiter forgot our noodles last night but it was very very busy for the New year celebration. We did get our hand cut noodles in the end and they were great! Food is wonderful! We love the veggie dumplings, sticky rice shaomai, and the hand cut noodles. Do not miss the Taiwanese popcorn chicken. I believe it's seasoned with five spice and is crispy perfection. This place gets busy and can be a little loud but it is totally worth it. We had heard a lot of hype around Kung Fu Kitchen, so we had to know if it was better than our current favorite for Chinese in CT - and it was!! It's easy to see why this spot has received Michelin recognition. The hand cut noodles were SO good, with a perfectly thick, chewy texture. The dim sum options were great, and they definitely have the best soup dumplings. I couldn't get over how good the white chocolate soup dumplings were for dessert! That was my first time ever having something like that, and the combination worked surprisingly well. My daughter and I dropped in on Christmas after picking her up from the train station. After a long trip, she requested takeout over sit down. The restaurant itself is chic and modern. The staff was very attentive. They gave us our menus and escorted us to the cozy waiting area. We took our time, and felt very relaxed. When our order arrived, it was presented in a the cutest take out bag I ever saw. The whole experience was so enjoyable that we couldn't wait to get home and eat! Welcome to New Haven, Kung Fu Kitchen! It's always great to see a new addition to the growing Asian food scene in the New Haven area. The interior is well-lit and inviting, with what appears at the moment to be a vacant drink bar immediately upon entering. While their drink menu featured slushies and bubble tea, only soda was available during our visit, and no alcoholic options in sight. The xiao long bao appeared visually different than expected, but the filling boasted bold flavors and wasn't too greasy. The cucumber salad was seasoned lightly and refreshing. The beef tendon with chili oil was decent, and I enjoyed the hand pulled noodle soup. I found the stir fry version however lacking and unspectacular, possibly being tailored for a more general American taste. The front-of-house staff appears to be mostly locally hired, though some employees might possibly be from other locations. As with any new opening, growing pains and learning curves are to be expected. I can see challenges in training new hires unfamiliar with the culture and desired service etiquette, while also fostering buy-in and excitement into the restaurant's vision and menu offerings. I'd recommend this restaurant for small to medium groups, but they have several seating options for larger parties as well. I'm hoping they can add more broth and seasoning choices for their hand cut noodles and ramen, but as long as consistency and standards can be sustained or even elevated, this will be one of my top spots for satisfying my dim sum and noodle cravings moving forward! read more

The food was really delicious! But the service was ...odd. We had a large group which maybe was overwhelming, but I've never experienced anything like this before. Our table had ordered tea and water. Then server said he would bring tea and three waters, which seemed strange for a group of 8. Then we were only brought tea, and apparently the server had forgotten the water order, and then told us that he wished we had told him we wanted water earlier (which we did). Then he said we had to choose between tea and water because they didn't have enough pitchers and cups. They also don't have kid's cups anymore. After a couple more requests, they eventually brought us a small pitcher of water, but refused to bring more cups. The tea was really hot and took a while to drink, so we were very very thirsty by the time the tea was cool enough to finish so that we could repurpose the tea cups to drink water. So strange that they wouldn't give us even a few extra cups for water. The restaurant was relatively empty, maybe at about 1/3 capacity at the time, so it didn't really make any sense. They also brought out a different dessert than what we'd ordered, but it was so awkward after the multiple water refusals that we didn't say anything. Then there was a mix up with splitting the bill between two tables. They didn't seem to care that they had put several items from one table on the other table's bill, so we ended up asking to have it all put on one check so we could do an even split. Back to the food, everything was delicious! Our favorites were the pan fried dumplings (with soup inside, so be careful with the first bite!) and pork & crab soup dumplings. I also really liked the sticky rice shiu mai. Would definitely go back for the quality dim sum, but I'd be sure to bring my own water bottle, if you're trying to also drink anything other than water, to avoid unnecessary drama and excessive thirst. The selection of dim sum here was more limited than I expected and the menu looked like it was designed for children, but what I did order was quite good when compared to other Chinese restaurants in CT. The beef scallion pancake sandwich was satisfyingly filling and not too greasy. Their xiao long bao (soup dumplings) come out hot with plenty of soup inside. (This is the best item here.) The Shanghai Pan-fried pork buns were also really juicy and delicious. The black fungus salad was well-seasoned. As for the spicy beef noodle soup, the broth was rich with flavor. The only thing that was a bit odd was that the Chinese Cruller was served with sweet condensed milk, making it more a dessert. That's not normally how it's served at other Chinese restaurants. It was also a bit denser and thicker that the ones I normally get at other places. Still good, just different. The service was prompt and friendly. The decor is modern and clean. We decided ahead of time we were on a strictly dumpling mission this time around and ordered sticky rice shu Mai, I've never had sticky rice as shu mai and crab and pork soup dumplings. Waitstaff seems to be floating vs dedicated to specific tables which is fine. Dumplings came out in about 15 minutes. Delicious! Overall, I had a positive experience! The service and ambience were both good. Food was pretty good. Lo Mein 6/10 - Seasoning was spot on and noodle texture was pretty good, although could have been chewier. The dish was missing wok hei and the tea egg and lemon didn't really fit well with the dish. I would have preferred a stir fried or fried egg instead. Soup dumplings 8/10 -Meat was super bouncy and juicy. Skin was delicate but firm. Would have liked a bit bolder flavors with it. Chili Oil 9/10 - The best part of the whole meal and overcame some of the shortcomings in flavors. Bold, nutty, and spicy. The small bowl wasn't really conducive to pouring the chili oil and it was too liquid to pick up with chopsticks. A small spoon would be good for tables that are sharing the chili oil. Dumpling Sauce - Pretty standard and good. The container was awful to use though. It would either pour too much or too little. It would be better if it was stored in the same dish as the chili oil. Although this restaurant is not perfect, it has the potential to be one of, if not, the best chinese restaurants in new haven. I am looking forward to coming back! read more

I've ordered takeout twice, but it doesn't compare to the dine-in experience. We were the last customers dining in that evening, but the staff and the manager, Sam, made us feel very welcome. All the dishes we've tried so far have been excellent -- the chicken stir-fry, the house special hand-cut noodle soup and stir-fry, and the must-try taro puffs. The drinks were also great -- the green grape and mango rosemary beverages were both excellent. This place is definitely becoming one of our favorite restaurants in New Haven -- 10/10! read more
