Xay’s Kitchen - New owners new menu - Laotian Near Me - Orange, Connecticut

I went here for takeout. I tried the chicken fried rice. Had to wait much longer than the originally quoted time. Staff were very pleasant but seemed too busy considering there were only 2 tables with people at them. The portion was a nice size but it was mostly things other than chicken. I'll start off the review with location, it's in a plaza off a really busy major road. There is free parking since it's in a plaza. The restaurant appears to be a little mom and pop shop. Upon arrival the hostess was on the phone and just waived us off to seat ourselves. After her phone call she did come greet us and bring us menus. It was pretty empty during late lunch a little after 1:00 p.m. Decor and ambiance was as I mentioned earlier mom and pop shop feel. The menu consisted of Thai and Lao food we tried a few things but found the flavors lacking in a few areas. The pad seew was very close to being traditional Thai Pad seew, but traditionally there are never any carrots or cilantro added to the dish, the cilantro which I normally love cilantro was too floral and made the Pad Seew taste like soap. The Lard na was deemed "just okay" by my father in-law again the randomly added carrots. The sausage was over priced for literally 1 sausage cut into smaller pieces and lacked flavor and it was a bit gamey. The cucumbers slices served with all the meals were too mature to be served the way they were, just huge thick slices, if you're a gardener you'll understand. The papaya salad I don't recall anything good or bad about it. The squid salad was not what we expected but still good, again nothing that makes me say I need to try this again. Excellent interior design from all angles. Food is very rich, fragrant, and well presented with vibrant colors. 2023/2024 Lunch Special menu is different. 2025 Lunch entree comes with free selected appetizer. Portions are good amount & we took leftovers home. Con: After taking pictures, the entrees were a bit too much on the sweet side for all three, but the appetizer soups hit the spot yummy. read more

Great location with easy parking and access. We were warmly greeted and found the seating comfortable and the decor charming, including fresh flowers on the table. We stayed traditional with pork Pad Thai, Massaman Curry, and a whole fried fish. Everything was delicious. The staff was helpful and the chef came out to show us how to eat our fish. Everything was absolutely delicious! I came here yesterday to celebrate my dad's birthday, and the service was excellent. All of our food came out hot, and our server was very attentive -- we left with zero complaints. We tried a little bit of everything, and it was all amazing. If you're hesitant about coming here, don't be! The food is authentic and full of flavor. We visited on a Saturday night around 6:30 p.m. and had a great experience. If you've never had Laotian food but enjoy Vietnamese and Thai food, give Xay's a try. Lao cuisine shares many of the same ingredients and even the same dishes, but with their own unique twist that makes it worth exploring. I love how they serve rice with the Tom Yum soup unlike most Thai places in the area. Not only does it balance the strong flavors of the soup, but also makes for a much heartier meal. The food is cooked flavorfully without much oil, grease, or an abundance of MSG/fish sauce, which is always appreciated. We've mostly ordered dishes we're familiar with such as their pho and pad kee mao (drunken noodles) and admittedly have yet to branch out too much so far, but looking forward to exploring the rest of their menu! (Update 7/21: Loved the Kao Piek Sen!) It's always been the same person serving us (they only have one person in the front of the house the last two times we've been there, which is usually sufficient for a small space like this during quiet hours) and she has always been kind, prompt and attentive. The only nags we've had so far is the beef for the pho usually comes out tougher than we would like. They have a crispy pork and shrimp wonton appetizer we also found kind of lackluster, but we do enjoy the sai oua (pork sausage) appetizer. I don't know too much about the history of Xay's Kitchen, but apparently they're a family run business with a location in Danbury as well. I'm just happy they opened in Orange and right next to Lin's Kitchen, which is actually a solid option for Sichuan food. I'm hoping their presence brings even more diverse asian cuisine options to the Orange area, on top of the more recent openings of Ji Bei Chuan and K-Pot! There's always room for another "Kitchen" next to Xay's and Lin's lol. Best of luck, and as long as the food continues to be consistently good, we'll be coming back! read more

Was excited to try their pad Thai as it has good reviews but I was very disappointed. It was way too sweet, lacking in the complexity that using the right amount of tamarind offers. Also it's comes with tofu but there were only 3 or 4 small pieces. There won't be a return visit. read more

10 Stars ! This place rocks. A lot of standard Thai menu options and a lot of different Laotian options that you don't see on other menus! Great food, great service, nice atmosphere. Be careful with the heat. If you ask for medium heat it's actually pretty intense! The menu heat options are 1-5, so if 3 is medium, an American medium is probably 2. Cute vibe, friendly service. My teen and I went for a weekday lunch and had the place to ourselves. We had the homemade jerky as an appetizer, which had fantastic flavor, and beef pho (lunch menu) and nam khao as entrees. The pho broth had nice depth, but too mild for my liking (I asked for spice level 2 and it was not spicy at all). The nam khao also wasn't spicy enough (even though we asked for level three), but tasted great nonetheless. The beef in the pho was tough and bland. I'd order this dish again but get it without meat. The garnishes were plentiful and the water came with the most charming little paper roses made from the straw wrappers. read more

We just moved to Connecticut and have been struggling to find high quality Asian restaurants. Look no further than Xay's Kitchen. Clearly there is a real chef in the kitchen who uses quality ingredients and knows how to make them shine. The summer rolls are perfect. Did not opt for a noodle dish this time but will definitely be back. We went for the elegant stir fry's which had just the right amount of tang and heat. The Tom Yom soup was the best I've ever had. I would give this place zero stars if I could, the pho Is tasteless, I had one sip of the broth and the owner told me that I couldn't take it off my bill, "why did I order it?" is what she asked me... I love pho, and it being my first time there, I was recommended by a friend to try it. I didn't expect to be talked down to and berated all because I didn't like something they made.
