It's tiny when you walk in and I was afraid it was going to be a wait but we were shown to a much bigger area downstairs and were seated straight away. The menu is very limited but oh so very uniquely special, which is difficult to find in CT for a Chinese restaurant. The pork ribs clay pot was almost a spicy Chinese curry flavor which was absolutely delish. We ordered pork soup dumplings, beef dumplings and shrimp dumplings. Kids and the Mrs were not disappointed. Big kid ordered the wonton soup which was a larger bowl than expected with a lot of wontons, seaweed, egg and some veg, yumm, The braised beef brisket noodle soup with bok choy was also an absolute winner with a good spice kick. We devoured and shared everything in our typical tapas fashion and thoroughly enjoyed all the unique tastes which will keep this place firmly on my radar. Excellent job guys. read more

Steamed is one of those places that looks much bigger on the inside then it does on the outside. There's seating downstairs, and the whole spot is pretty cozy. This is the first time I've been since the pandemic started and the first time I got noodles instead of dimsum, but I think that's the move. Their noodles/entrées are priced very affordably (I think more so than their dimsum). The soup isn't too salty and the broth I had tasted like it was good quality. This will give you a little bit of a good coma but very much with it. Their location is also great, you can swing by and get boba or grab some HKM groceries on the way home. read more

This place really surprised me. Walked in for lunch to dine in, which they have downstairs. When we got downstairs it was a bustling lunch spot, with well spaced seating and cozy. We ordered off the menu and it did not disappoint. Everything was so tasty and plentiful. The star dish for us was the beef noodle soup, which has just the right enough of spice, and the meat was so tender. I really enjoyed their chili pepper dumplings, one of the better ones I've had. A really cute spot. When you walk in you're greeted with a buffet area but just ask for seating. Downstairs is nice and they had their AC on, which is nice. It's cute and modern. Overall, my experience here was just ok. The food is not that great. Whenever I visit a "Taiwa ese" styled resturant or XLB place I always order what is usually the signature or staple. They are the beef noodle soup, XLB, and Sheng Jiang Bao. The beef noodle soup was disappointing. The beef was a bit overcooked and if they are going to serve the piece of beef with the tendon the need to wash the tendon better before cooking. The noodles were more mushy than chewy. The bok choy was overcooked and soft. The broth was oily looking and was lacking a lot of herbs and spices. The XLB had a thick skin and I know it is a style, but more typical XLB places serve it with a thin skin and it takes more skill to steam thin XLB than thick skinned XLB. The meat was just ok . The broth threw me off in that it was quite concentrated. The broth should be a light and compliment the rest of the bao. The sheng jian bao was also not made well. It seems more store bought rather than self prepped. The bao was too dense and the some of the meat in a few of the baos tasted old. Sheng jian bao is an oily dish but it is prepared steaming hot and when you bite into it there should be broth bursting out. The meat should be a large portion of the bao and the bao skin should be thinner. I agree with the other reviewer that for this type of food, they should be coming out piping hot and not just warm. If it isn't hot enough the juices in the baos are usually absorbed into the dough and you arent able to experience the bursting juices of the broth. read more

My takeout dishes were on point. The vibe is similar to Xi'an, but they did away with the ordering counter, and the top floor is mostly tables for dining in. They focus primarily on soups and dim sum. The soups looked huge! I kind of wish they had more options in terms of dish types, but the food we ordered was good. The soup dumplings were some of the best I've had in New Haven, with a good ratio of skin, soup, and meat. They were nice and delicate and popped with soup. What a nice find! Steamed was one of those restaurants I went to with reservations about the authenticity and quality - I am happy to say that it absolutely blew my expectations out of the water. Upon entering, you are instantly greeted with the fragrant smell of peppercorn and sweet chili oil and classic Chinese decor. They even have a whole other section downstairs with even more seating! Being our first time here, we wanted to be able to try a bit of each. That being said, we ordered the: Har Gow (Crystal Shrimp Dumplings): (5/5) This dish alone scores Steamed a five star review just by itself. These are some of the largest har gows I have seen, bursting with juicy, jumbo shrimp and encased and the beautiful "crystal" skin that had just the right amount of chew. These dumplings were almost the size of the XLB! I have had har gow at some top dim sum establishments from NY to HK and this stands out among the very best! Wow, just wow! Sheng Jiang Bao (Pan Fried Pork Buns): (4/5) Classic Shanghainese buns, Steamed does these just right. They are nice and juicy on the inside with what I think is the perfect amount of crispness to the fried bottom. The dough is clearly homemade and the quality shows. Only slight personal adjustment would just be for a thinner wrap. Pickled Pork Belly in Chinese Bread (Pork Bao): (3/5) The most lackluster of what we tried at Steamed but still good nonetheless. The Bao here is homemade and the pork belly is well prepared. However, they would have benefitted greatly from more pork belly and perhaps some scallions and hoisin sauce to provide more depth of flavor! Xiao Long Bao (Pork Soup Dumplings): (5/5) XLB done right: thin skin and an interior filled with rich pork broth! Filling was a bit light in salt content but that is more a personal preference. The standard accompaniment of black vinegar and ginger helps balance this out. Beef Brisket Noodle Soup: (4/5) Perfect bowl of noodle soup for a cold day! The broth is addictive and spicy and the beef is fall apart tender. That being said, the noodles started clumped together and the amount of beef was quite low. These qualities don't stop this from being a killer bowl of noodles though. All in all, Steamed is an amazing addition to the New Haven food scene and stands out among the other authentic Chinese spots. I would make the trip again for those heavenly har gow themselves, but their other nuanced dishes command attention as well and make Steamed one of my top favorites in the New Haven area! read more

I couldn't bring myself to order more than one thing from the menu because I was just worried that it would be as dirty as the place looked. Providing a much-needed dim sum dining experience to the area, Steamed has relatively authentic dishes, but the quality is just not up to par. The menu isn't as diverse as most dim sum establishments typically are, but given the dearth of similar restaurants in the area, this restaurant is okay. The food itself is mediocre, and the quality of the ingredients does not seem to be very good, insufficient enough that it is discernible by taste. As for service and the ambiance, there's not too much to complain about; there's definitely enough space, and even if the service is slow at times, the wait staff is kind and diligently takes your orders. When I came here, I had the tofu cold dish appetizer, fried leek dumpling, pork bun sandwich, spicy pork soup, and pan-fried pork dumplings. The tofu cold dish appetizer came as expected, not bad but nothing spectacular. As for the fried leek dumplings, these were good and tasted relatively genuine, as was the pork bun sandwich and the soup. The pan-fried pork dumplings, however, seemed quite deficient, as they tasted very off in the content of the filling. It wasn't a problem of quantity or amount, but more about the quality of the ingredients and how it tasted almost expired or refrigerated for too long. I thought a dim sum joint would make sure that their dumpling varieties would be top-notch, but I found this slightly off-putting. As for the interior, there's seating both upstairs and downstairs, and the ambiance is quite homey. Something about how the tables were oriented in the general layout seemed off-putting, but I can't exactly put a finger on it, but otherwise the interior design was charming. The service was pretty slow, at least compared to other restaurants of similar nature. The wait staff was kind and attentive, but I would note that the kitchen was backed up when I came during a late afternoon. This is why I love hole in the wall restaurants! It is a very cozy atmosphere with only a few tables. The décor is very warm, it feels like someone invited you over for dinner. Since the restaurant was so tiny the service was immediate. The food was exactly what we were looking for - authentic dim sum. We tried the shrimp dumplings, pork soup dumplings and black sesame glutinous rice balls. The shrimp dumplings were consistent with the quality you would normally find in NYC. The only difference was that they didn't have quite as much shrimp inside. The pork soup dumplings were also what I would expect from NYC. I came here with my partner for a weekday lunch for the first time last week. We had only ever had proper dim sum once previously elsewhere and it was disappointing. I feel like here, at Steamed, I experienced what dim sum is meant to be! The place appears small, but does have a downstairs so there's more tables than the three or four up top. We were able to park on the street just a block away. We ordered the scallion pancakes, beef dumplings, pork buns, and sticky rice. My favorite was, hands down, the sticky rice. Lots and lots of dark wood paneling if you're into that. Yeah definitely a time warp. Let's move onto the food. My friend and I had a very large bowl of vegetable noodle soup. The vegetables were delicious and there were tons and tons and tons and tons and tons of noodles. If you like noodles you will love the soup. It should actually be called noodles and vegetable soup because you get a lot of noodles. We also shared a dish of pork fried dumplings which the waiter thought would be a better choice. The dumplings were overcooked and greasy and definitely freezer burn around the edges. However the soy sauce was pretty good. If you want a blasé lunch go there. Connecticut has a serious lack of dim sum places, so I was overjoyed when I found this on Yelp while searching for a dinner spot in New Haven. It really satisfied the major craving I'd had for some good dim sum for months. I got pan fried pork dumplings and shared a scallion pancake with my friend. Both were really flavorful and just so delicious. The dumplings were big and juicy, and the pancake was crispy but not overly so. This place is really adorable too. It's very small, but set up in a way that makes it feel like a home. It's a perfect spot for dinner for two, but definitely do not come here with a large party. My usual take out order is a rotation of scallion pancakes, ma la chicken wings, pan fried pork buns, and chilled cucumbers (usually some combination of 3 of these). The chicken wings especially go great with white rice!! I've enjoyed all the noodle soups I've gotten here although they're usually fairly heavy on the noodles. Personally I think the sticky rice (cakes) and soups taste better in person compared to to-go, but that might be me being picky lol and there are plenty of delicious options that are take out friendly! So I've mentioned a few times before how much I love food travel shows, but also how much I hate them as I am so often made to watch some random person eat these amazing foods that I know I will likely never get a chance to enjoy. Such was the case with soup dumplings. Just these little pockets of soupy, brothy happiness with a little meaty surprise inside. Sure, there were probably places within striking distance that offered these, but my laziness combined with what is sometimes a complete lack of motivation meant it just wasn't going to happen. Then one day...Yelp happened. While doing some reconnaissance for a New Haven Valentines Day dinner, Yelp just "happened" to suggest this place out of the blue. Well played yelp, well played. The reviews and images were enough to get my wife and I and son and his girlfriend in the door the next night. First off from the outside, you would likely drive right by this place and not even notice it was there. Basically a converted house, nothing flashy or screaming "COME IN HERE AND FEED YOUR FACE", and I like that. Also, super handy parking like right next to it and if you get the right table you can actually keep an eye on your car, big plus in New Haven. There were what looked like 2 entrances, one at street level and one down a set of stairs, we went in the street level one and that seemed to be the right choice. We were seated immediately and offered some tasty fresh New Haven water. Pro-tip incoming: Do NOT drink this water. We had done enough recon to pretty much know what we wanted so we put our order in right away. Now here's the thing about this place, the service is a bit...odd. Not bad or terrible, just kind of spur of the moment I guess? The food came out really oddly timed, like one main, then an app, then someone else's main, etc. We were all basically sharing everything so it didn't bother me as much as it might have at another place. The same thing happened during our second visit but again, if you're sharing it's not really that big of a deal. As far as the food goes, it was literally everything I had imagined. The pork soup dumplings were like little pasta oysters that offered a large pearl of heavenly meant. So amazing. It took some practice figuring out how to eat them without looking like an idiot, but we got there. Pan-fried pork dumplings also amazing and some of the best we've had ever. And if you go hear and DON'T try the pickled pork belly bao, you've made a grave mistake my friend. Other highlights from that night and another subsequent visit would include the Braised Beef Brisket Noodle Soup, the Pork Ribs Noodle Soup (both of which had just an amazingly delicate and complex broth) and the Ma La Chicken Wings app. The wings were especially amazing as they had a really uniquely spicey dry rub that made my tongue feel stuff. Besides the water, my other pass suggestion would be the Nanjing Salted Duck app. My son ordered it and said he loved it, I can tell you with no hesitation though that it was awful. Just cold, underspiced, sad pieces of sliced meat. Hard pass there. Overall this place is a win for me and was an instant add to our ever-growing New Haven dining rotation. If you're within 30 minutes, it's worth the trip. And put some extra money in the parking machine and walk to Koffee On Audobon right down the street for an after dinner java fix. read more

I was super bummed to see that the tofu that I raved about in my older review got taken off the menu, but we ordered the savory chilled cucumber (guests sitting at the table next to us recommended it) and it was so good I forgot all about it. It was literally just chopped up cucumbers, sesame oil, chili, and garlic, but there was some other mystery element that made it taste amazing - whatever that was. Then we had the scallion pancakes which were the literal best I've ever had. They were SO perfectly light and crispy. We also got the pork soup dumplings again, as well as the pan fried pork buns and the har gow. The soup dumplings were even better this time around and the pork buns were unreal. To say I am impressed would be an understatement. While not every dish was flawless, what put Steamed at the top of my list is their commitment to authenticity and that deserves the utmost praise in my book. Xiaolongbao (4.5/5): These xiaolongbao are hardly small. Each pouch easily outsized my Asian soup spoon. The xiaolongbao burst with hot juices when bitten into (mine popped before I had the chance to scoop them into my bowl!) and were filled with a classic pork filling. The pork filling could have used more seasoning, but the skins on these pouches were super thin and tender. The ripples at the top are clearly demonstrative of a pinching technique long perfected. Har Gow (5.5/5!): Yes, 5.5 out of 5!! These har gow are the largest I've seen on the East Coast and oh so succulent. Each generously-sized pocket enveloped not one, not two, but three (at least!) pieces of pale pink shrimp! Moreover, their shrimp was marinated in such a way that brought out a pleasant sweetness. The fact that the skins were practically translucent also speaks to the attention and care the staff took into making sure the wrap were thin. The har gow is easily the BEST dim sum dish here. Pan-fried baos (5/5): The pork filling used was en pointe--extra pink and very flavorful. The dough for the buns was homemade and on the thicker side, but successfully held up to the heft of the meat mixture and pool of juices wrapped within. The only critique I have for these is that I wish the bottoms had been crispier. Pan-fried dumplings (5/5): These were surprisingly juicy, as we learned when a stream of liquid squirt forth at first bite! The restaurant was out of baos so they threw in two dumplings to compensate. The filling was akin to that used in the xiaolongbao but had more leek and scallion. Pork belly filled bread (4/5): The pork belly was extremely soft and served in a piece of folded bread (bao). The bread here, too, was homemade and had a pleasant chew. While the pickled veggies and scallion were nice additions, the dish could have benefitted from the inclusion of a thick, sweet, hoisin-like sauce as it was a tad dry served as is. Braised beef brisket noodle (4.5/5): I wasn't a huge fan of the choice of noodles used here, but the broth was extremely flavorful and fragrant. The chili oil used was reminiscent of Szechuan cuisine. The brisket yielded easily to my chopsticks and I loved the pieces of chopped bamboo used as topping. I only wish there had been more brisket! Until Steamed, I've never had worthy dim sum in CT. I would be hard-pressed to believe that there is better! read more

Came here after visiting the one in Madison, CT (which is AMAZING by the way). The ambiance here feels a little bit classier, with a slightly different menu than the location in Madison (attached is the menu of the New Haven location). It's a little bit pricey, but I think the price is worth the flavor and quality. We ordered shrimp dumplings, pork soup dumplings, Ma La chicken wings, scallion pancake, sticky rice, braised beef brisket noodle soup, and pan-fried pork buns. Everything we ate was incredible and came out in a timely fashion. The food was so flavorful and delicious (my mouth is watering writing this review). As an Asian person, I was excited to try a dim sum place in the area and was severely disappointed. I thought a new place would be fresh and alluring for an Asian person craving authentic dim sum without trekking to NYC. But alas! I got the braised beef noodle soup - there were 3 small pieces of beef in the soup which is quite shameful. While the broth tasted fine, the highlight should be the braised beef which was lacking. To add salt to the wounds, I tried the Chinese pork belly (which is charged per bun at a whopping $10). The pork belly was dark and withered and only a thin single piece. No juicy fat or tenderness!
