Our first impressions were how clean the restaurant seemed. The staff seemed happy and and was courteous. The food was good. We started out with the onion rings as an appetizer. They were crunchy and really good. We had the angus burger and the meat was really tasty. We also ordered the street corn shrimp tacos and they were pretty good. We enjoyed our visit to the Backyard Grill so much! Nicolette was our server and she was outstanding! She was knowledgeable and made great recommendations based on my preferences. We started with the cheese curds. We live in TX so I'd never had them before. Truthfully I wasn't sure I even wanted to try them lol. But they were delicious. I had the almond crusted walleye but Nicolette suggested that they sub in the lemon buerre blanc for the hazelnut as the hazelnut is sweeter and I'd expressed a preference for "not sweet". It was divine. I also subbed in sweet potato fries instead of the rice pilaf. My husband had the BbQ brisket burger which he really enjoyed as a chef. I also drank the 3 Sheep's Lemongrass Pils which was lovely. Typically I'm more of a wine drinker but when in Wisconsin... Great experience overall! read more

We went at 6 pm on Father's Day and were seated within minutes even though they were busy. We had a group of 6 and we were all happy with the food, drinks and service. I had the cup of soup (three cheese potato) and half sandwich (ham and cheese), which is meant to be a lighter meal but was very filling. In town for a work meeting and we stopped here for lunch. I am giving 4 stars because our waitress was very friendly and provided great service for our large group. The food was good and the portions were generous. I would have given 5 stars but we had a reservation because there were 11 of us and when we got there we had to wait for our tables. This was a spectacular find on a recent trip to Fond du Lac. First off, you get a really cool bar atmosphere with a great "backyard" style patio. Next, you have a stellar beer list with plenty of local content. From there, you get the treatment of daily rotating flavored butters (cinnamon apple on this occasion) with your roll. The curry soup (can't remember the full name) was fantastic. A bit brothy, but full of flavor. For my entree, I made the hard decision (it's a great looking menu) of choosing the Backyard Bake. This was a whitefish and shrimp dish mixed with vegetables and served mixed together. The fish was extremely tender and had such a smooth flavor. The shrimp were a bit overcooked and dry, but still seasoned very well. All in all, this dish was a hit. Not quite a 5-star worthy dish, but definitely enough to maintain the 4-star rating given here. read more

I was in Fon du Lac with a large ladies bowling group (25-ish), and we decided to have a group dinner at the Backyard Grill & Bar. They were able to accommodate seating for us in about 30 mins, even though they were extremely busy. Their menu is huge and had something for everyone. We had an amazing waitress who handled us expertly, and the food came out quickly. They even separated our bills, which doesn't always happen for a group of that size. The food was so delicious and the service was so great that a smaller group of us returned for lunch the next day before heading home. We had a different, but equally exceptional waitress and the food was amazing yet again. We'll definitely be returning the next time we're in the area! read more

Five stars all the way! Thanks to Yelp and the high rating, my friend and I stopped for lunch while driving through FDL. We started with a yummy Bloody Mary with a chaser. They make their own beer. We got a huge order of beer battered onion rings for an appetizer. Yummy! The cheesy potato soup is one of the best potato soups I have ever had. We split a chicken sandwich. Again yummy! This is a delayed review. I sat at the bar a few months ago as the Brewers were playing the Pirates. The atmosphere is quintessential Wisconsin. I had wings and a burger that were well prepared and tasty. They had Abita stout on tap. A first find for me. The most memorable part of the evening was the right fielder was a rookie for the pirates, he's also the son of one of our California managers. I mentioned this to a guy sitting next to me and later in the game the young man came up to the plate and hit a single. Even though it was against a Brewers pitcher the entire bar area erupted with applause. I was humbled. This to me is what makes our country unique. The Brewer fans put aside their allegiance to cheer on a young budding star. Magical. I can't wait to go back again. read more

First off Kay was a fantastic server and took great care of me while I dined here. Second is that the food is fantastic and not bar food in any way. All the items I had were seasoned perfect and tasty, no bland or boring here. I was going to get lunch at a different place and at the last minute I changed my mind and am I so glad I did. The place looks like one of those chain places but it's not. The place has booths and tables for dining and a wonderful bar that is in a separate room, I chose the bar to have a cold one with lunch. The bar had numerous flat screens and 32 tap beers with tons of bottles, see the beer menu I posted. The hostess stand is hiding behind a old truck door which is think of cool. The beer and food menus are enormous with tons of options. The smoked ribs that have won this or that was going to be my choice. I got smoked ribs which came with cheesy hash browns and cheesy chicken enchilada soup. I ordered the full slab and told Kay that my appetite was not that big and I would be taking left overs with me. Kay being on top of her game took charge and boxed half the slab to go right from the beginning. My plated food came with a carry out box with my other half slab ready go go, how cool is that. The cheesy chicken enchilada soup was so FUC%#NG amazing with crispy tortilla shreds on top and a small heat finish. It was so creamy and cheesy with nice chunks of white meat chicken. It was an enchilada in a cup and the most interesting soup I have had. The cheesy hash browns were a great change as a side dish and we we pretty good. The hash browns were cooked al dente, not mushy and just right. A creamy/thick cheese sauce covered the hash browns and made for a great side dish. Now for the slow smoked ribs that are smoked in the back yard as they describe. The ribs looked and smelled great, see my pictures. The ribs were smokey/meaty with a sweet BBQ sauce. The ribs were fall of the bone clean and moist/juicy. The sauced ribs were very tasty and the best I have ever had from a non BBQ place and put a lot of BBQ places to shame. Over all this place rocks and they are doing everything great and I wish I lived closer. The casual dining and serious food slogan they use is on point and they live up to it. I struggle with 3 - 4 stars. Trepaniers bar is 4 star worthy. Their food is average. I would classify this place as consistent, fairly priced, good for your family and good if you want to have a drink with some friends. Their menu offering is complete, food is average. I came here for dinner last weekend during a bachelor party and we all got something different from the menu. The service was great and the waitress (I think her name was Angela) was really polite and prompt. We all started off with a few orders of cheese curds that were awesome. I got the Reuben and it was amazing. Everything was cooked just right and had the perfect balance of ingredients. I almost ordered cottage cheese instead of fries, but it ended up working out fine because the fries were really good too. Just really, really good food. Later that night we had a conversation about how good our dinner was! He had onion rings with a great cajun remoulade sauce and I had the standard seasoned fries with garlic aioli sauce. I've been to the Backyard Grill several times while in Fond Du Lac with work - as it seems to be the favorite of all of my co-workers. I've had the BBQ Chicken Sandwich and the Wisconsin Burger (special) when I've dined in here for lunch and everything has been good. I really love their fries - as they remind me of fries from Rally's. The service is top notch and the food seems to come at a fast pace despite the restaurant always being busy when I'm there for lunch during the week. My party and I had 2 bbq brisket burgers, the famous patty melt, and the bruschetta haddock. We were seated outside and our orders were taken in a timely manner. I very much enjoyed the bbq brisket burger that I had. It was seated in a pretzel bun with onions and your choice of a side, I had the seasoned fries. Lots of flavor, however very fatty and dripping in grease. I did notice that our drink glasses were unclean. Small scraps of food were stuck to the side of my glass that I had to pick out and clean with my napkin. It's understandable that sometimes the dishwasher doesn't pick up every scrap of food off the dishes, it's just a bit annoying to see. Our waitress did not come around to refill drinks, we had to flag her down every so often for more water on a hot day. Overall it was just an "ok" experience. read more

We stopped for lunch and found menu is large with a very good variety. The layout with all the nooks for dining, at least in the bar, was pleasant and kept the noise for such a large space in check. The bar height booths in the bar area were a nice addition. We prefer to dine in the bar but not at the bar, this was a much better setup than the standard bar height tables and chairs scattered around the room. My wife had the shrimp and asparagus quesadilla, which both of us agree was nice pairing, well prepared and presented, with good flavor. I had the shrimp plate, deep fried with seasoned fries. The shrimp seemed to be the standard Sysco breaded shrimp so they were okay but nothing to get excited about. The seasoned fries were excellent, not sure if they are made in house or premade but regardless they were really delicious. What really stood out was the service, the table to server ratio was excellent, the severs were very personable and responsive. We will return, which is the best compliment. read more
