Enjoyed our food at The Sunset. Unfortunately all the outdoor tables with umbrellas were taken (too hot to be in the direct sun!) So we sat at a table in the bar that still overlooked the water. Took a while to get service. (I'm pretty sure the person who sat us never told anyone). Once I went up to the bar and ordered a drink the bartender was really helpful and got our orders taken. My wife had the coconut shrimp which were great. Very tasty and cooked well. I had the regular shrimp and they were more average. We both LOVED the hash browns though. There is seating outside, in the barroom and in a dining area. The nice views are from the bar and outside. Not much to look at in the dining area. They have a Sunday Buffett. Very Disappointing Experience Unfortunately, our experience at Sunset on the Water was very disappointing. The service was extremely poor. We waited about 30 minutes for our food, and when we were ready to leave, we actually had to track down our server just so we could pay our bill. What makes it even more frustrating is that this is the second time we've experienced poor service here. We gave it another chance hoping our previous visit was just an off night, but unfortunately, it wasn't any better. The food wasn't anything special either and certainly didn't make up for the lack of service. After two disappointing experiences, we won't be back. read more

Picked this place randomly on a road trip coming from Lake Geneva, we're from Pennsylvania. We liked the view of the lake from the parking lot and it was 3/4's full, so we figured it had to be a good choice. Menu had a decent selection of options. My girlfriend got the mahi mahi with mashed potatoes, a salad, and 2 ciders. I got the chicken stir fry and a cup of French onion soup. Waiter kept coming over to check on us and refill our drinks. Pete M's review hit the proverbial nail on the head when he noted that too many dinner places in this town have too many choices on the menu. No restaurant can do this many different dishes well, but trying to be all things to all people does seem to be the Fondulac restaurant way. The cheese curds were okay, chicken tenders were the kind that come from the freezer, also just okay. The French onion soup was very good as was the Tilapia on wild rice. The Wisconsin style old fashioned before eating was okay in quality, big in quantity. Great location, right on the lake, nice patio for dining al fresco, I like to avoid bugs and still had a nice big window view inside. Service was very good, though they weren't very busy. read more

We decided to drive along the East Shore of Lake Winnebago after being in Fond du Lac to see a musical at UW-Find du Lac. What an enchanting outdoor dining experience. Our server, Emily, was so sweet and kind. The prime rib melted in our mouths and was so flavorful. Cooked to perfection, the bleu cheese salad was fresh, baked potato perfect. Good view on the patio/deck. They host bands regularly. My wife and I had chicken nachos. Quite good with lots of chicken. I saw burgers and salads coming out that looked very good and more than ample portions for the price. Drinks were better than average and again priced for value. We stopped here for an after dinner drink. Been here before for the food, but didn't remember it until my friend reminded me. The bar was full of regulars for a Friday night. I felt like we were part of a parade when we walked in and sat down. Getting the stare down I didn't know what to do so I waved hello and ordered a drink. The bar is a big large circle so it's easy to interact with everyone there. We kept to ourselves, had a drink and left. I didn't notice any specialty drinks that I like, so I ordered a Blur Moon. The orange I was given with it was mushy. Grossed out I told the bartender who gave me a fresh pint and a fresh orange. They are located right on Lake Winnebago NE of FDL. First time ever visiting and they knocked it out of the park for my family of 7. We were treating my father for his 75th birthday and he had heard good things about this place so it was his choice to come here. It was a 45 minute drive for us and we would do it again in a heartbeat. We had 2 young females serving us, 1 of which was in training. They were so attentive and friendly....truly a wonderful representation of customer service done right. When they heard it was my father's birthday, they presented him with a special brownie dessert which put the biggest smile on his face and was not something we even asked for! In addition, we had a hiccup with my son's entree and they insisted on replacing it. They even took a picture of our group. The food was great, but these two young ladies are truly what left a lasting impression and make use want to return. read more

This is a really nice place on the lake. It has a nice patio with a great view of the lake and during the summer there is no place better to go. Maria is the owner and she really cares what you think. Many years ago the Sunset was a really nice and swanky supper club and the food and drinks were the best in town. Now it's just bar food, but it's pretty good. The service by and large is good. There is plenty of parking. What you can't beat is the view and the location. If you're looking for a nice place to go and have some fun you won't be disappointed. read more

Overall, a good experience. The food was excellent, the drinks were big and reasonable and our server was sociable and efficient. However, I didn't see any precautions being taken for the COVID-19 virus. I didn't see any face masks on the employees and there was no hint of social distancing. We had made a reservation for 8 people on the patio. When we arrived, the patio was full with no idea of when we could be seated. So, we took a table inside. It was overlooking the lake and the room was almost empty. As more people arrived, they kept seating them close to our table rather than trying to maintain some distance. This is a really great hole in the wall that the locals love. It's got a wonderful outdoor seating area with a view of lake Winnebago, with good views from the windows on rainy days. We had a party of almost 20, and it was fairly good service. Although some people had there appetizers forgotten, and it was a bit slow despite the fact that it was pretty empty, this was really great service. Both of our waitresses were very kind and considerate. Appetizers- We tried the fried macaroni and cheese puffs and they were the bomb. Rolls were warm and fluffy. Potato skins were delicious. Meals- I personally had the chicken Alfredo, it was very good. Others said there meals were ok, but could have been better. If I could give a place 3.5 stars, I would. It was neither here nor there. Nothing special to write home about but not bad by any means. The number one reason to come here is for the view. We sat on the patio on a summer night in August around 6pm and were surrounded by bugs the entire time. BUGS EVERYWHERE. Of course this is of no fault of the restaurant and the price you pay if you want to sit on the patio in the summer...but just proceed with caution. I'd advise trying to get a table instead that has the same lakefront view without all of the bugs, and plus air conditioning. Outside we also got to smell their dumpsters which are maybe 20 yards away from the patio...yeah, on a hot summer day those things wreak. The food was good. Not amazing but better than I expected for such a small town little place. I got cod, my cousin got the turkey club, and his wife and son both got pizzas and we all were pleased with the food. My friends and I had dinner there last night. We were a group of 8 people. When the meal finally arrived everyone who ordered a baked potatoes got a cold potato. One of the ladies had ordered fried shrimp and that arrived cold as well. I ordered an 8 oz filet mignon ( priced at $29.99). When it came I thought it didn't even look like a 6 oz steak. Everyone else at the table thought it looked more like maybe 4 oz and they mentioned it to the waitress. She said she'd check with the manager. The manager came out with a box from the freezer and said I'll give you something off but look at our package if steaks. It says they are all 8oz. I thought that was a very rude way to handle it and frankly made me very uncomfortable! She could have apologized and I would have been happy. There was no reason to try yo shame me! Oh and by the way - she gave me $3.00 off of my meal! I don't want to go out with friends and be treated that way! What could have been just fine turned into an awful experience because of how rude she was to me! read more

The sunset is really pretty, and would be better if they had any outdoor seating but there is none. We waited for about 30 minutes and it wasn't what I would call busy for a Friday night (we went tonight). Once we for seated our server was very friendly. My husband was rather disappointed for his Korbel Old Fashioned, it was obvious it was a mix and no garnishments. Poor for a WI OF. We had the deep fried perhaps and baked haddock. Both were really, really good and I would definitely get them again. I might try the soup as the dinner salad was lacking, basic lettuce, tomato, cucs and croutons. I had the sweet potato fries which if they were cooked a bit more would have been better. My husband really liked the hash browns with cheese. Besides the fish, the best part of the mean was these little cheddar herb biscuits you get. They were awesome. Overall for the price it's not bad at all and I'd eat there again. Ambiance? What ambiance - place is dark, dingy & shabby. Table was dirty & waitress nearly knocked it over when my husband asked her to wipe it off. Rest of staff seemed very unprofessional. We were seated and young server threw two menus onto the table & walked away. We waited almost 15 min. for someone to come to our table while two young men came in after we arrived, and were seated right next to us, greeted, brought drinks and menus. I finally went to the "kitchen" door and had to shout for someone to come see what I wanted. I said I wanted some service. A young woman said rather gloomily "I'll take it" - no apology, nothing. No offer of a glass of water, drinks - nothing. We were brought a basket with two very small rolls and a tray of butter. Drinks came (after my request for something) somewhat later. I ordered French Onion soup - tepid & mediocre. My husband had a Reuben and fries - just okay. I ordered a Sirloin, med rare. It was cool, looked like it was tossed onto the plate which was splattered with juice, no au jus on the side , no garnish and it was tough. I had a side of wild rice - looked like someone dumped it onto the plate with a shovel. It was tasteless and cool. We were never asked if there was anything else we wanted, never asked how we liked our food. I most certainly would not expect such lousy service in what is listed as one of the top supper clubs in the city. It seemed like the serving staff was very poorly trained, poorly dressed and extremely unprofessional. Wow. Fond du Lac, what a name that place gives you. We should have questioned things when we parked on the side, and walking around, saw the horribly unkempt "front" of the building. Weeds, only weeds, dead and alive right in the front. Not very inviting. And right along the front a "step-down" to an obviously unused doorway with very little in the way of "warning" of same. Certainly a safety hazard that the fair city of Fond du Lac should be aware of - also in plain view of the front of the building. Such a disgrace of a place that used to be a showcase of the city. I had Jamie take care of our small gathering after the funeral service. The value, service and price - everything was great. Easy to work with and she was flexible to add items to the menu. Many times at a small gathering, 35 people, the menu is fixed at three items. Several people complimented on the selection and service. Beyond happy with the package and made a hard day, very, very smooth. I would 1000% recommend anybody hosting a small event to look them up and work with them. I wasn't sure what to expect of Sunset's. We were traveling thru town with some friends and they suggested this spot as they'd been here before. It's settled right on Lake Winnebago so the views and sunsets can be amazing. But wait am I correct...no outside seating? Overall I have to say I wasn't that impressed. I'm not sure I'd make a trip back for dinner. Maybe just a cocktail at the bar might be a better approach. I just felt everything seemed a little dated inside and could use a little facelift. As far as the food they had several evening specials but nothing really appealed to me. I finally decided on chicken fajitas. They were ok but nothing out of the ordinary. My hubby ordered them too and felt the same. I have to say I'm not sure I'd come back but the setting gives this place an extra star. read more
