Many cuisines served at this restaurant. I decided to try it for the Sri Lankan food, especially the kotthu which can be made vegan (which is not common). I phoned in the order for pick-up (vegetarian roti without egg; $18.95 plus tax) and it was ready 15 minutes later. The kotthu was well-made, with plenty of curry leaves and a nice array of spices, without being too spicy. There were plenty of veggies (cabbage, onion, okra, green beans, carrot, and cauliflower), and plenty of shredded roti of course. I'd say it lacked a little salt but that's better than being over-salted. The portion was very large and filling. Far from the best vegan kotthu I've had but it's such a rare dish to find that I appreciated this very much. I would definitely return. Recommended. read more

It has been a year since my last review and boy has things gone downhill. For starters, we had no service. Had to flag a waiter down to take the order. Had to flag another one down for water. Had to flag one down for the bill. For a moment I thought I had became a dentist. Getting any sort of service is like pulling teeth. On to the food, we ordered the similar items except we added a fried rice. The roti was cold and gamey. The beef rangdang was dry and appears to have been reheated one too many times. About the only dish that was is "acceptable " was the fried rice. And guess what? Surprise surprise, the prices have increased 25%+. When I was getting the bill, I was remarking on our dining experience, the waitress said why didn't we tell them earlier. I tried. I could not find any single staff nor any staff bothered to see how our meal was all night long. Anyways, I would take this restaurant off my "to return" list. Go at your own peril. We bought some takeout food for dinner from Kurumba in Port Moody and brought it to a friend's place for dinner. Our order consisted of 3 pieces of whole fried fish, Seafood Char Hor Fun noodles, Sambal Tofu with Eggplant, Coconut Rice, and Goreng Pisang with Ice Cream. Everything was delicious but the star of the show was the fried fish. The man who packed our food at the restaurant left the lid slightly open for us as I had expressed concern that the fish might lose its crispiness by the time we reached our destination. While it was definitely better on previous occasions when we ate it fresh in the restaurant, it was still quite crispy when we sat down to eat it. We were impressed with how crispy the fish was, considering how far it had traveled. My husband and I brought leftovers home and reheated it a couple of days later in our Ninja Foodi machine, on air crisp setting. The menu is quite extensive since they covers 3 countries. The crispy chicken wings were good, I ordered the regular , came with a Thai sweet chilli sauce for dipping. The murtabak was ok, flavour was there but not strong enough, the curry sauce was a heavy cumin taste which is decent. We are so glad this place was open on a holiday. The calamari dish was very good, not oily tasting The roti was homemade and it reminds me of our trip to Malaysia. The sauce had a lot of heat but the flavor was tasty We ordered the lunch special Rendang Beef. The beef rendang had strong lemongrass flavors but I wasn't a fan of the curried vegetables.. The Char Hor Fun was pan fried wide rice noodles with veggies and choice of meat or seafood. The dish was saucy (not spicy) with lean chicken breast pieces but didn't have a lot of flavor. We opt to add $3 for extra noodles to share with the family. The Nasi Lemak was served with 2 pieces of fried whole fish with bones. I finally found a dish I like here. The Hokkien Mee. It looks legit and tastes pretty close to what you get in Singapore. Just do not expect the standards from the well known hawker stalls in Singapore (Eg Come Daily Hokkien Mee in Toa Payoh is my favorite). I will say it is similar to the typical average Hokkien Mee found in the many coffee shops or hawker centers. To upp the yum factor, it will need lard and more wok hei and better sambal (chili). But to find this in Vancouver, it is precious. I had tried the other dishes which some of my Singapore friends recommended - hor fun and roti prata (canai) but I was not that into it. That did not wow me. The sambal prawns I had before was tasty but again, nothing special. We had dinner here with a friend. Quite frankly we were expecting much better after reading all the great reviews. Maybe we just came on an off night. I had made reservations but they were not really required. It is very casual. Tables are nicely spaced apart, there is hand sanitizer on the table, there is a sign on the door requesting that masks be worn and our server was wearing a mask. There was only one server and while others have commented on the great service we did not feel the service was anything out of the ordinary. In fact our waitress seemed very uncomfortable and the service was similar to what we have experienced during the height of the pandemic minus the cheerful demeanor. She stood well away from the table when taking our order and did not even pour the first glass of wine or open the bottle. In fact she just placed the wine glasses and unopened bottle of wine on the table. We really felt like unwelcome visitors. There was only 1 other table that was occupied so service should have been better. As others have mentioned the portions are huge but unfortunately the quality of the food left a great deal to be desired. We had the following: For an appetizer - hot garlic chicken wings - very spicy but overcooked and dry Butter fish - a special of the day - 3 fish but definitely overcooked - very strong taste and dry Pad Thai with prawns - the best dish we had Kung pao chicken - it was okay but lacking in flavour and taste The portions are massive. We had plenty of leftovers and our friend took some of the food home. The containers for the leftovers were just dropped off at the table and left for us to pack the leftovers. It is very budget friendly. Our bill with a bottle of wine came to $93.00. We would not return because we did not feel comfortable dining in there. I liked the first few bites of dry heat, but beyond that was disappointed with it. There wasn't enough flavour to make up for the disappointing noodle like roti. Came here for lunch with my cousin, after reading reviews I'm always looking for restaurants in the lower mainland so I added it to my bookmark. We started with some roti Canai and came with a really spicy sauce (which I LOVED) best roti ever! We both choose lunch specials, I wanted to try something different. I tried a dry (curry) chilli calamari with rice it was OK the calamari was a little on the chewy side but it came with fresh veggies on the dish which was good, also came with a choice of soup or spring roll. I had the hot sour soup. Which was good pretty authentic Chinese hot and sour soup. My cousin had the beef Rendang Traditional Malay curry slow simmered with lemon grass, shallots, lime leaves, galangal and spices really good! Came with rice and a cold curry type salad (wasn't a fan of the salad) Price was great under 10 bucks for each meal. and good portions. We came and it wasn't busy at all so service was good. My friend and I went to Karumba the other night for dinner as I was seriously craving me some roti canai. It was my first visit here but I had seen a few positive reviews and my friend was raving about their eggplant dish so it was a 'must try' for me. The service was a bit slow but there were a few tables that arrived within minutes of each other so it was understandable. We ordered the roti and some drinks right away and then browsed the menu. There are quite a lot of choices here, and a good variety of different types of cuisine. We settled on beef rendang curry, nasi goreng and garlic eggplant. The roti was quite good and the curry sauce was above average. The eggplant was also quite enjoyable, however the other two dishes were a bit disappointing. While I found the beef to be really tough, the curry sauce was flavorful with a nice level of heat. We actually sent the nasi goreng back as the rice was kind of soggy and overcooked. We asked for some chicken fried rice instead, which was only slightly better. I would like to go back and try a few more dishes, because I think this place is not bad. Ventured a little further to our neighboring city, Port Moody, to Kurumba for some Southeast Asian fusion eats. We pass by this restaurant so often it has been long overdue to try this place out! We ordered the Roti Canai + Nasi Lamar w/ Beef Rendang + Char Kway Teow + Sambal Prawn. Every dish here had a lot of flavour, sauce and spice so it's good idea to get a couple bowl of rice to eat with!! The sauce for the roti cans is spicy so if you can not eat spicy food I would suggest to skip this dish or not use the sauce. But the roti is huge. It was almost the size of a pizza when opened up. My favourite was the Sambal Prawn. The Sambal sauce was very tasty and definitely pack a punch of flavour. Overall a great place to checkout! read more

We came to a midpoint to visit a friend that lived out near PoCo and due to her current diet she needed a place that was vegetarian friendly. I'm not the most familiar with the area so with a list to choose from of restaurants around the area we went with this place as the menu looked intriguing. We had a reservation, but on this day it wasn't that busy, the place is in a plaza, nice and bright, clean, let's get dinner started shall we! We ordered a few dishes for the four plates amongst the four of us, most of them vegetarian, one meat (to satisfy me!) and the dishes started to come quite quickly. First off the sambal tofu with eggplant, a nice assortment of big tofu squares, lacking on the eggplant, spicy from the sambal sauce, the tofu was solid on the outside, quite soft on the inside. There was perfectly fried green beans that accompanied the dish. It was mild, but there was some kick to it... so if you can't handle any spice.... you maybe sweating after this one. The Sri Lankan savoury omellette was next on our table, oddly enough after biting into it the taste was almost identical to that of Singaporean fried noodle, the one that I usually order at an HK style cafe. It was very homestyle how it was made, a little on the saltier side. Kotthu roti was a very different dish, not what you would expect as many would expect a regular roti, but it wasn't that, what it looked like was a dish of stir fried rice rolls with vegetables. This dish was intresting as on the menu it described it as roti chopped into shreds and stir fried wiht eggs and vegetables, a little saucy, doughy, but that is from the roti slices. Malaysian beef rendang was the last on our list of dishes. If you wanted something meaty, more like something beefy, this would be your dish. It was saucy, with spice but for me the beef was a little too over-powering from other beef rendang's I've had at other places. Even with the rice it felt like chomping down on pure beef. The meal was reasonably priced, the dishes were pretty big, and the water was constantly filled, it's a nice place to come eat in and maybe the dishes weren't the right ones for me on this night, but I would give this place another chance. On the second visit I find this to be a solid authentic Malaysian cuisine in a no fuss setting delivering value gourmet showing no cutting back on pricey spices and herbs. We ordered the top dishes beef randanng chicken curry and lemongrass chicken and I would say I can go back every other week for a repeat. Came here with the family for lunch. They have a lot of lunch specials, but we decided to just order from the regular menu so everyone can taste more varieties. We got the nasi goreng, char hor fun, fried fish, sambal tofu and eggplant and the kotthu rotti (chopped roti with onions, egg, and beef). I liked everything except for the Kotthu Rotti as the spices were a bit too strong for me. I especially liked the nasi goreng (I liked this version much better than the one at Hawker's Delight) and the Char Hor Fun (noodles with thick egg sauce). They also gave us 2 kinds of chillies -- red chili oil and the pickled green chilies. Both are good and definitely complemented the heavy-carb dishes. :) The portions were good. We got 5 dishes for 7 people and everyone was full. Granted, my parents don't eat that much, but it's really good value. I am a bit surprised that the restaurant is not very busy. Quite a few options to choose from, and they also have some vegetarian options. Their crispy fried fish is sooooooooo good (I love the eggplant and okra), it's sweet and a tad sour. Most of their curries are pretty yummy and some more unique ones. A couple curries are more general and you can get it in many other places. Their roti is a bit different from some places I've tried and more chewier but I quite enjoyed it. The curry is good and great for people who love spicy food, but it's too spicy and oily for me. I chose Kurumba as the venue for lunch yesterday. We were out & about shopping earlier, here, and in Port Moody, and headed over to the parking lot a few minutes before the restaurant's opening time of 11 am. Once inside, we were warmly-greeted by our young server, and allowed to select where to sit -- we chose a table alongside the window - with its natural light, and view towards the mountains, it looked to be 'the' perfect spot. We were immediately brought menus, and then at our request, hot water and cups. Then allowed 'our time' to warm up a little, and pursue the menu. The restaurant was nicely-decorated inside - with colourfully-painted walls, and featuring several paintings, and pieces of metal art. With the bright day on the go outside, there was indirect, natural light, making it 'look & feel' rather bright & cheery by the window. Food (dishes ordered and shared): dishes came from kitchen to table in timely sequence, with good-looking presentations, and portion sizes - perking senses and appetites!! I have used names and descriptions of the dishes as per the menu. - Calamari Rings (lightly-battered squid rings, served with a Thai chilli sauce) -- tender 'body rings' of squid, with light, crunchy, coatings - sauce sweet and spicy. - Ginger Beef (crisped beef w/carrot julienne, green onion, and sliced onion, tossed in a sweet ginger sauce) -- beef tender, flavourful, veggies the same, nothing overcooked, ginger sauce mildly-spiced. - Mixed Vegetables (variety of fresh vegetables, wok seared in a light sauce -- broccoli, carrot, water chestnut, baby corn, greens & zucchini) -- nice variety of veggies, so well-prepared, sauce very light, nicely-accompanying, and not distracting the distinctive flavours of the vegetables. - Shanghai Stir Fried Noodles, w/BBQ Pork (thick noodles, w/bok choy, cabbage, onion, and pieces of bbq pork) -- noodles a touch chewy (= 'perfect'), veggies, and pork pieces tender, not overcooked, sauce 'light', and flavourful. - Sweet & Sour Prawns (batter fried prawns, w/onion & fresh peppers in a sweet & sour sauce) -- prawns tender, juicy, coatings thin, lightly-cooked, veggies not overcooked, sauce flavourful, sweet & mildly-sour. A hidden gem in Port Moody. Everything about this place was great! There is no reason to dock stars, so 5 it is. My husband saw a previous review and wanted to give it a try...and we're glad we did. Very reasonable prices. We spent under $40 for two people, but ordered enough for at least four. The menu had a good mix of Thai, Malay, and Sri Lankan items. We had the Roti Canai which was huge! At least twice as big as other roti we've had. It was handmade crispy and flaky mound of goodness with a side curry sauce. Yummm! We also had a small Hot and Sour soup (enough for 4-5 servings), Red Curry with prawns, and the Mee Goreng. All with great spice! The curry with prawns was more like a bowl of prawns in red curry sauce. The extra few dollars for the prawns were well worth it. Many Mee Goreng in Vancouver have a ketchupy taste, but this one was not so. Better than the average Mee Goreng! They will ask you how spicy you want it and the regular spice was quite nice, hot enough without burning your toungue. But they can go milder or spicier...much spicier. According to the server, the regular spice we had was about a 3 on a scale of 10. This place is kept very clean and the tables are double wiped too. Food = Great, Service = Great! Just came back from another satisfying meal at Karumba. I love this place and hope it never changes. Hospitable service, delicious food. They are testing the waters with a new nasi lemak dish which we did not try, since we were ordering the char hor fun again, as well as trying the Sri Lankan noodle. Both were prepared quickly, and were fresh and tasty. I love that the chef utilizes his Sri Lankan roots as well as Chinese background to fuse together a number of different, and fully wonderful standalone dishes. The beef rendang is definitely unlike others in the Vancouver area, it is full on meat with little to drier sauce. I would say that the strong dishes would be the Sri Lankan and Chinese dishes, as I would go to a full on thai restaurant for pad thai. I like that the restaurant is conscious about food safety and the different nuances of chilis and spice. Definitely unique and worth the trek to Port Moody! read more

Came here for lunch with a friend. I got the sweet and sour pork with rice and my friend ordered chicken with green curry and pad thai for her kids. My dish came out the portion was good, but the taste was not good at all. It was very sour and I dunno where the sweetness went. My friends curry came out good but the pad thai was super salty. She told the staff that the pad thai is too salty and its not edible. The staff instead of taking it back to fix the issue. She just told us that's how it is and left to do other things. So we left the whole plate of pad thai untouched and the owner ask if we were going to pack it. We said no its too salty and she had no comment. We will not come here again due to the bad service and the taste of some food. I should preface this review by saying we came in the early evening of Valentines Day without a reservation. My partner and I were seated at 5:15, had our orders taken at 5:30, and got our food at 6:15... But all we ordered was Pad Thai and rice, yet every other table got their meal well ahead of ours. It seems incredulous that it would take 45 minutes for our orders when only 4 other tables seated, who all received their meal earlier. We were actually about to walk out, since no one had updated us on our order. The food came plated well, but it neither dish was exceptional. The chicken pad thai was ridiculously sweet and the meat tasted out of place. The rice was very salty. I asked for the pad thai spicy and they made the rice spicy instead. Kurumba Restaurant is a pretty simple place. Medium restaurant, basically clean. Spacious between tables. Polite and helpful staff. Only two persons on when I went there on a Thursday night, and therefore sometimes service was a bit slow when they were cleaning up tables. Otherwise fine, and kitchen was pretty fast considering we were a party of 7. Although this is in Port Moody, it was surprisingly not that hard to get to from a skytrain station -- the 97 B-Line from Lougheed Mall practically drops you outside. Kurumba's menu has a great concept: Many of the not-too-expensive (like whole crab) popular dishes of various asian / south-east asian countries can be found in it. You have Chinese, Malaysian, Sri Lankan, Thai (What? Not India? Especially given the name Kurumba). Obviously not everything gets on the menu, but a really good selection of many recognizable items. We tried a bunch of stuff, but here are just the things that I remember most clearly (remember that I do all this stuff undercover! -- generally no note-taking and no pics either). Also, to be honest, I think we caught them on an off-day in the kitchen. Some stuff was... weird. But I'll get to that. Sri Lankan Faluda Milkshake ($4.50) - Whatever you are thinking this is, it's not what you think. - Ice cream plus "red jelly" plus a bit of ice. - Jelly is soft enough to be sucked up with the standard issue straw. No extra-wide bubble tea straw required. - It's OK, especially at just $4.50. Sri Lankan Hot Buttered Calamari ($14.95) - Basically calamari tossed in a spicy mix involving butter and whole chillies. - TIP: Do not eat the chillies. Well, you can if you want but watch out, they are quite bitter and very spicy-hot! - Very salty. - Did I mention this was very salty? Thai Crispy Spring Rolls ($5 for 2 rolls) shrimp & pork rolls served with sweet Thai chilli sauce - Oops. Forgot the sauce. - Whole shrimps inside, which was probably the best part of this otherwise lacklustre item. Plus you can to dissect the roll to see the shrimps. - Looked a bit oily. Also looked dark, which suggested they were slightly over-fried. Roti Canai ($6.50) hand-made pan-grilled flat bread served with a curry dip - Decidedly NOT oily to the touch, which is a plus. - Surprisingly thick and not-very-crispy. Almost like a thin pancake. This was very odd. If you are looking for a great roti canai / roti prata, try Amay's House or Laksa King (used to be Bo Laksa King's Bubbles and Bits). - Curry was quite tasty, though. - Single very large piece. - Two would be probably good enough for a meal. Eggplant in Chilli Garlic Sauce ($13.95) - Quite sweet, masking some of the underlying saltiness, with the result that this was both extremely sweet and salty at the same time. - Otherwise quite tasty, though most of that is the sauce. - According to one member of our party, this dish has considerably shrunk in portion (?). Malaysian Beef Rendang ($12.95 small, $16.95 large) traditional Malay curry slow-simmered with lemongrass, shallots, lime leaves, galangal and spices - Underlying "correct" flavour of beef rendang, but strangely pale grey. This MAY have been because we asked for everything to have spiciness toned down. Overall... Food was passable to OK. Best item for me of everything we tried (and we also tried several other dishes) was the calamari, and that was very salty! TIP: Order only ONE main for each of TWO persons, and add an order of rice. If your main is already noodles or rice, then throw in an appetizer like roti canai. This way, you can have a light to medium meal for BOTH persons with probably no leftovers and no waddling out of there over-full. Food is, as mentioned, just OK, but price should then be under $20 for two persons. You might even get away with it just being $10-$15 per person, which is a pretty cheap dinner anywhere you go nowadays. TIP: Don't fiddle around with the spiciness.
