I was looking for a light bite, so I decided to try this place for the first time. I came on a Friday night, so it was definitely busy and packed, but we were able to get seated right away at the sushi bar. Closer to 4.5, just got back from happy hour and the seared salmon was so good. It just melts in your mouth and has a great smoky flavor. Also got the wings and they were crunchy and decent size. The spicy tuna roll was all right. Legit spicy so be aware of that (I've had spicy rolls at other places and it's never actually spicy). For my drink, I got the salaryman which had a great lychee flavor base and it was very refreshing. Enjoyed the actual lychee it came with too. I've been coming to this location since it first opened, and the quality has really gone downhill. I've regularly eaten sushi all my life, and this is the only location where I've found fish bones and scales in my food. One time there was nigiri made with stale rice, but at least that only happened once. I've had scales in the sushi a couple of times, and the bones have appeared at least three or four times. As far as the quality of the fish goes, it seems pretty hit or miss. I used to really enjoy the extra fatty tuna before I had a particularly bad order, and then I never bothered getting it again because it's a pricey order. The cuts also do not seem to be as generous as they once were. I've continued to give this place a chance because most of the servers have been very pleasant, and I've had some nice memories here. But last week I was at this location for a celebration, and we had sushi with both fish bones and a scale attached. The sushi with the bones was comped, but the sushi with the scale was not. I think I've hit my limit with this location. I'm also surprised that they don't seem to have taken better precautions against fish bones appearing in their sushi given that this has happened multiple times. As much as I've enjoyed coming here, I'm tired of having to wonder about whether or not I'll find something in my food again. Like I said, this is literally the only sushi restaurant that I've ever been to that I've had these issues with, let alone consistently. Let me start with with I am extremely excited to have tried this new place. Compliment to the itamae for the amazing sushi. The lava is probably one of the best sushi combination I've ever eaten and it's a favorite for sure; followed by the smoke salmon. Overall, this is decent sushi made much more appealing by its extensive happy hour. We visited during happy hour, which featured a strong selection of seafood, cocktails, sake, and wine. The discounts were quite noticeable. The seared salmon normally costs $10 but drops to $4 during happy hour. Service was not the fastest but our server was very kind and accommodating. *Lychee Cosmo: sweet and fragrant. Although it was advertised as lychee forward, it leaned more toward a cherry blossom or floral profile and tasted somewhat artificial. *Kusshi Margarita: refreshing with a solid pour. *Seared Fatty Salmon: a nicely thick cut of salmon that was evenly seared. I did wish the mayo topping had more flavor as it felt more textural than impactful in taste. *Nigiri and Sashimi Combo: came with three pieces each of sashimi and nigiri, featuring tuna, salmon, or yellowtail. I was impressed by the thickness of the cuts. The tuna was tender and clean, the yellowtail was rich and fatty, and while the salmon was leaner, it was still fresh and not fishy. *Toro Crispy Rice: the tuna was very rich and fatty. The rice was well prepared and not overly oily, but the dish could have used something acidic or herbal, like shiso or pickled radish, to balance the richness. *Salmon Avocado Roll: the avocado complemented the lean salmon well. The roll was generously filled and the rice did not overpower the ingredients. *Spicy Tuna Roll: the tuna was quite mild, so the roll lacked strong flavor, though the fish itself was tender. Structurally, the roll was well made and evenly filled. *Salmon Sushi Bowl: came with six slices of salmon over plain rice and pickled vegetables. I wish the rice had been seasoned with vinegar. If you're looking for a quick bite to eat, some sushi, definitely come here you can stay as long as you want, or it can be quickly brought to you because the service was also very fast, especially sitting at the bar. They had a hibiscus and rose cocktail that I loved drank two of them so fast. I hadn't visited Kusshi in a while and my friend wanted sushi so it was an easy choice. I've been here several times, but my review is old so a new one is warranted. We ordered several apps and sushi to share. The waiter was attentive and helpful. The sushi was super fresh and the highest quality as it has been each visit. Here's my breakdown: Shrimp and veggie tempura: very crunchy and the perfect temperature. Cooked perfectly. Tuna ball: always a favorite. Fresh and very very delicious Shishito peppers: charred and seasoning was spot on. The restaurant is located in the Pike & Rose retail area and offers Japanese style cuisine at a somewhat premium price (also offers Omakase, which is somewhat unique, so that's cool too!). The service was pretty disappointing. It wasn't too busy of a time, but we were pretty infrequently checked on and kind of left idling for pretty long stretches of time. The food was okay. The noodle dish was mid $20, so I definitely expected more. The meat was tough and chewy. A bit disappointing considering it was their namesake dish. The sushi was decent. Kusshi is an awesome sushi spot that is open late on most nights. They have Alaina Japanese foods such as sushi, sushi boats, noodle dishes, and sake. I ordered shrimp shumai and the Bethesda Roll. The shrimp shumai was horrid. They were so small. I called them "popables"...just pop them in your mouth and done. They were served steamed with no amount of flavor. I prefer for shrimp shumai to be medium / large with pieces of shrimp you can actually taste. I've had shumai with robust ginger flavors as well. All of what I thought was customary for shrimp shumai was non-existent with Kusshi Sushi's version. Eating it, along with the lack of presentation, left much to be desired. I would never get this dish again. The Bethesda Roll was typical -- tuna, salmon and avocado. There was nothing memorable about it. Just sushi. Although my Kusshi Sushi experience was via Uber Eats, I think all experiences -- regardless if takeout or dine-in -- should leave a good impression. Thursday 1/2/2025 I've never had a real authentic sushi experience so my friend Tyler recommended the firecracker roll from kusshi sushi. I made an online order through uber eats and got the takoyaki $9, Kusshi seared fatty salmon belly (nigiri) $11, pan-fried pork gyoza $11, Kusshi wings $14, and the firecracker roll $17. - the firecracker roll was a first time experience for me and it was alright (I still don't see the sushi hype). - The salmon nigiri was also a new item for me and it was pretty good. It had a sweet & savory type of sauce that really elevated the taste. - Takoyaki (octopus balls) is once again another item I had never tried before and they were a nice surprise. They were topped with flakes and a sweet, savory white sauce & brown sauce that complimented it well. - The kusshi wings were pretty good but could've benefited from the wings being more moist by saucing them a bit more (the sauce was good). Didn't realize until after but $14 for 6 wings is pretty ridiculous. Wings should not be more than $2 per wing. - The pork gyoza (pan-fried) was alright but none special. Kusshi will always be the first sushi place I recommend to friends when they're looking for fresh, tasty, creative sushi. Their signature rolls are so delicious and there's a diverse menu to choose from. On top of that, if you don't like sushi or seafood there are plenty of other options like ramen or katsu chicken/pork. I've been here many times and each time the waiters have been so kind and helpful when looking through the menu. So I've been here a handful of times now! Most recently was actually back in May but I found another location opened up in Rockville which is nice. My go to was always the red skins roll but their sashimi is also always a good option. Service was really good even when it was busy. Our servers checked in my table with my friends several time for beverage refills and any additional orders we wanted to place. It's a casual restaurant but also a good option for a semi-casual date night (nothing fancy). Recommendation would to have them add something unique to their menu (possibly even seasonal). I order from Kusshi twice by Doordash. Both times they messed the order. The food was food, but the lackluster service was really bad. One time they got wrong a $30 order, and the second they forgot to put the miso soup orders in the delivery. The girl that was the Doordash driver offered to go back and pick it up, (40 minutes) but by then the whole dinner was somehow disturbed. The people at the restaurant were somehow immune to the complains, in both occasions. As indicated, normal quality for the food, as it is expected, nothing that really stands up. The Pork Katsu portion was generous, but the meat was overcooked and dry, and the side of rice was extremely dry as well. It would be great to see the restaurant invest in proper Japanese rice. The sushi was disappointing. It was cold with dry rice and tasted similar to what you'd find prepackaged at a grocery store, despite the premium price. After missing out on a group happy hour here (my coworkers now love this place) I was finally was able to stop by again to dine in. They have outdoor and indoor seating and an Asian snack shop in the corner which we do frequent when we're in the area. The indoor lighting is on the dim side, but I didn't mind that (I only took notice when I was trying to take food pics While the prices do seem high at first, you do get a lot of good quality food. We ordered the takoyaki, 9 piece nigiri sampler, Sunset roll, chilled green tea soba with shrimp and vegetable tempura, and Nutella roll. There is so much on the menu so even the pickiest eater is bound to find something they like. Also, kudos to having the cold soba option. My kid loves soba but is not a fan of hot soba on summer days. Service is great, people are attentive. The food came out all at once so no one was waiting for someone else's food to come (and the Nutella roll came out later as a dessert). When they realized my daughter was working very hard to use chopsticks, they provided a little plastic contraption that clips on to the chopsticks to provide some tension. The takoyaki was done well with the center not too gooey as in some places. There's plenty of sauce and wavy bonito flakes on top. The fish on the nigiri were fresh and there was not too much rice. The soba comes with a dollop of wasabi on top and I think seven spice in the dipping sauce. Since my child wasn't a fan of the spice, they brought some plain sauce for her with no fuss. The tempura. Get it. It's crispy and flavorful. I've been used to eating Costco shrimp tempura and I feel some restaurants use it, but not Kusshi! The way the tempura was crunchy and light can only be made fresh. Writing this makes me want more. The Nutella roll was fun. It's like a mango fruit leather wrapped around a banana topped with chocolate, Nutella, whipped cream, Oreo crumbles, and sliced strawberries.
