One of my favorite sushi restaurants in the Rockville area. Sushi Oishii is sort of a hidden gem, not located near downtown or any popular destinations. Hidden in a strip mall near Darnestown road by the the Universities at Shady Grove, it is easily passed by without notice. Parking is plentiful in the rear and the front of the restaurant is quite small, so easily overlooked. The food is fresh and there is a great rotation of specials that change over time, be sure to try the fresh seafood selections that are seasonal like oysters, sea urchin, or premium sushi. I like how they have some interesting ingredients that is far and few between like Foie Gras and specialty sea urchin selections, some of my favorites! read more

My order from this place was through Uber Eats, so I'm taking that into consideration. It was a 50-minute drive time, and that possibly may have effected some of my ratings. But, I honestly wasn't a big fan. They had some coupons, and I wanted to try a different sushi place. I like the ones I like, but sometimes you just want something different, right? I ordered a bunch of good sounding food. First off, I grabbed a Chirashi. Chirashi is where it's at, guys. This is sliced sashimi, usually kind of omakase, served over a bed of sushi rice. It's my favourite dinner from a sushi restaurant, but I'm going to rate Oishii's a 1/5. There were several issues going on here. First, it's supposed to be served over sushi rice. What I got appeared to be white rice covered with a /generous/ layer of what appeared to be Taijin spice. Taijin spice is a Mexican spice blend of lime, chili peppers, salt, and what the heck is it doing in sushi? I admit, it gave a nice taste to the rice, but it got onto my fish. My sliced sashimi was seasoned with it as a result, and ... it does not work as a combination. Also, the amount of fish in the dish was far lighter than what I get anywhere else. My chirashi came with a bowl of miso soup. It was a little sweet for my personal preference, but overall it was pretty good. And, it was nice to get a really good sized portion, too. I'll give this one a 4/5. Next up was sea urchin. I ordered it sashimi style. The description says sashimi is 3 pieces, but I got two. It was served in a little shot glass carved out of a cucumber. Cute presentation. But there's a reason it's usually served on a shiso leaf. The cucumber, as mild a flavour as it has, made it really difficult to taste the uni. I basically ate cucumber. The uni is supposed to be the star, not the topping. It was okay, but ... I'll give this one a 3 / 5. My next sushi item was a shrimp tempura. This was actually delicious. Good flavour, good presentation, and good portion. 5 / 5 here. Finally, I tried the goose liver pate -- foie gras -- sushi. I kind of expected it to be weird, and it was. This was the thing that didn't travel well at all. It's pate served on rice, Nigiri style. It might have been good if I ate it in restaurant, but it was basically a gigantic blobby ball of grease. Flavour-wise, it was also so incredibly different from everything else that it clashed wildly. It was okay on its own. Like I said, I think the bulk of the reason here was travel, and I'm not gonna score it at all. I'm hard on sushi restaurants, but this is one I don't feel the need to give another try to. Sushi is a tough food in this area: we're kind of sushi saturated, and there are lots of good sushi restaurants. It's hard to exceed the high standard, but it's easy to fall below it, and this one did. read more

Back for Valentine's Day dinner and another great time at Oiishi. Servers were very busy, but prompt and attentive. Food came out fast! We started with beef skewers and shumai shrimp dumplings, both tasty, then the wife had a big soba soup and I had two fancy rolls, the sweetheart and the Godzilla. Liked both. For V Day they had lovely flowers and gave all the diners fun light up bears in crinkly cellophane! So fun. This place puts in the effort and we appreciate it. read more

My family and I used to really enjoy this restaurant and ordered takeout from them regularly. Unfortunately, our most recent experience was extremely disappointing. One of the dishes contained a large amount of hair -- not just a single strand, but enough to make the food completely inedible. It was honestly one of the most unpleasant dining experiences I've had. My order was thru Uber Eats. I specified (in all caps) SOY PAPER on my California roll. I have done this several times with this restaurant, and they always call me and ask for a credit card for the additional fee for the soy paper (like $3.00). This time I missed their call ---- I cannot handle normal seaweed --- and yep... they sent it wrapped in seaweed. I called them, and they knew what they did. Said I didn't answer so they ignored the special request. Didn't try to call me again, didn't put it on soy paper as requested and trust that they would get the $3.00 --- instead I had to watch everybody in my family eat while I had to watch. They have permanently lost my business as a result of this. Sending food that I cannot eat and made clear about it, instead of trusting that the customer will pay (with my long, long track record of always paying) on an order that cost me over $99.00 on Uber Eats... well, I personally think that sucks. Small business? Well jerking customers around for $3.00 and ruining dinner is no way to build good will. Good bye forever! For what it's worth, I did like their food. Excellent for sushi. They're the only ones around who offer a salmon skin hand roll which is my fave. Maguro was a beautiful piece of tuna. Uni was expensive but so worth it. Very friendly & efficient servers. Top notch sushi. Highly recommended. read more

It's been years since I've visited Sushi Oishii. My latest visit didn't disappoint and the food was actually better than I remembered. Shared the vegetable tempura, lovers roll (special roll #21), and the sushi deluxe (sushi entree #7). Vegetable tempura came with an assortment of fried vegetables (green beans, broccoli, sweet potato, etc.) that was battered lightly with tempura. Pretty good and didn't require the dipping sauce. I really enjoyed the lovers roll, which was a roll with avocado and tempura crunch that was topped with tuna and salmon. Although this roll was supposed to be spicy since it was topped with some chili pepper and spicy mayo, I didn't think it was spicy at all. The sushi deluxe was also very good and came with 9 pieces of nigiri and a spicy tuna roll. Everything was fresh! The spicy tuna roll was a tad smaller than I'm used to and also lacked heat, but overall still pretty good. Luckily we saved room for dessert and decided to try the fried cheesecake. This dessert was interesting, but in a good way. The cheesecake was lightly battered in tempura and flash fried. The dessert surprisingly wasn't too sweet and the cheesecake was smooth and creamy. I'd definitely order this one if you have room for dessert. Service was pleasant. I liked how our waitress offered up suggestions. Parking is available in the rear of the restaurant. read more

I've ordered takeout many times and it is reliably good sushi at a decent price. I particularly enjoy the specialty Lovers and Alaskan Beauty rolls. There are lots of good options. Such great quality sushi and fish. We came here starved and while our eyes were bigger than our stomach, we ate almost everything, which is a testament to how great the specialty rolls were. We had the screaming salmon appetizer, lightly seared and full of flavor. We then split the fantasy roll, angel roll, oishii roll, and Alaskan beauty roll. This whole experience is a 10/10. I own a restaurant but we focus on breakfast, American Soul and Latin food. So anytime we go out it's going to be Thai or Sushi because that's out of our wheelhouse. Everything here was divine! Initially went for the double salmon roll, and between that and the Alaskan Beauty Roll, they've absolutely superseded my expectations! I didn't know smoked salmon and regular salmon would be so good together! Other places take notes! Now if only the location in Owings Mills could get on board with that roll I would be in heaven! *cough cough* Food came quickly and the service was lovely! This is my go-to jam for delivery sushi. The rolls and the negiri sushi are always on point. The fish is always fresh --never skunky. Service has been consistently top-notch. The order is always correct. Special requests are never a problem, and the meal arrives on-time every time! Truth be told, I haven't eaten in their dining room for quite some time. However, I do stick my head in when I'm at their shopping center. It's clean, orderly and tastefully appointed. IMHO Sushi Oishii is a solid choice for sushi on Rockville's west side. read more

Fresh and great quality fish. We ordered so much food. We ordered the sushi sashimi platter. 11 hand rolls. 6 special rolls. Had two large sakis and some tea and soft drinks and total was $340. For the quality of fish it's an excellent price. The service was amazing, she really went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care, as well as the other guests. The ambiance is nice and calm with music in the background. Everything is made fresh to order. They don't accept reservations but you can call a few hours in advance to put your name down. Fast service, however the food wasn't as great as I expected for the price. For lunch it is about $12 for 2 rolls only. There are other sushi places that have that amount for $2 less! The sushi was about average quality and I'd rather go somewhere else where the tempura is more crunchy and crispier. Granted, I waited about 7 minutes to get home so that could have been a factor. I had seen this place from the outside for years and had a picture in my mind of what it would be like inside -- I imagined the classic very narrow Japanese place, with a skinny front and long hallway-like interior (Incidentally and by the way! Do you know the reason for this? It has to do with taxation of property in the old-time Japan of yore -- property taxes were higher the bigger the front part of a building was, so people began to build very narrow, skinny places that are long front-to-back to avoid being charged higher taxes .... ), dimly lit and with a sushi bar to one side (the left, specifically) -- but enough about what I'd imagined! The place inside is large, open, brightly lit, with friendly ordering assistance (I got a to-go order.), a large selection, and oh-so-yummy food! Cute place. Never actually sat at the bar in a sushi bar before, weird. Anyways, light crowd for lunch, and we did. Peeps were nice, sushi chefs were very cool, and engaging. Menu was pretty awesome, and looked delicious. We did a tuna wonton to start , pretty awesome. Also I did something that I've never seen before, and it makes me sad. I usually get a ginger salad or miso to start my meal, but they had something that looked intriguing, a clam miso soup. Kaaahhhhnnn!!! Damn you for the soup. It was so delicious that I will haunt you for the rest of my days! I don't live in the area, so won't be back soon, but would get that clam miso every time. It literally had 8 ish whole baby clams in it, and the pairing was perfect. You have ruined me, hope you're happy. Fish was great, fresh, and they had pretty much everything you're looking for. I don't want to write this review but I feel obligated to. I've ordered from here in the past and don't seem to recall having a lot of complaints. However, this time I'm pissed enough to post about it. I concur with others that have posted about teeny tiny rolls here... Ordered King Crab California roll ($13.95) and Shrimp tempura maki roll ($8.75) and they were the tiniest rolls I've Ever seen. For perspective; there's a sushi place I took my 3 yr old niece and 5 yr old nephew, that makes kid sized rolls for them (think nickel sized)... that's how big these damn rolls were. Literally toddler sized . See pics with Chic fil A mint and toothpick for size reference (2 pieces=toothpick length). To make matters worse, the rolls barely had any rice and were loosely wrapped, so they fell apart if you touched them. Forget the wasabi/soy sauce because they just disintegrated if you even thought about dipping them. Couldn't even use chopsticks -fell apart - had to resort to using my fingers. Frustrating! I feel like a dumbass for paying so much. Never again. 2 stars because the gyoza and spring rolls were decent, and Tonkatsu orders were massive. Tonkatsu was OK, a bit bland, but katsu sauce and spicy mayo compensate, so whatever. This definitely wasn't worth the $80+ I just threw away . read more

Always excellent fish and seafood. And when I dine in for deluxe lunch Friday and I'm told there's no Uni if I say "that's too bad, I was really looking forward to it". The sushi chef has been known to open their weekend shipment early for me. They have fresh local rockfish which is delicious and relatively affordable. Mackerel is always excellent. Gyoza and shumai are very good. And the place is tidy and neat and clean. Good service. I think it's the best sushi North of Rockville. And I've tried most if not all of them. read more

Everything was so good. Also ordered some Genmaicha tea. I've never had this before. A brown rice tea? IDK it was really comforting. Service was great. What a lovely lunch we had at Sushi Oishii! Located conveniently in Traville Gateway with easy and free parking, I had never been there before. I'm so glad we tried it! The lunch menu offered a "two roll" or "three roll" special with a broad variety of choices. It came with salad or soup. My go to sushi spot is in DC. And when I moved into the neighborhood, I was worried it would take awhile to find our spot. But the first place we tried, was the one. FATE! The service here is wonderful. They are always so warm and welcoming. And out of the hundred of times we've ordered, we've never had one error. Prices are on the higher end, but you are paying for what you get. FRESHNESS and QUALITY. My wife and I love the sushi and fish here. Everything is SO FRESH. We also love the grilled squid and tempura! They actually have a lot of great Japanese dishes here that you don't commonly see at other sushi spots in the area. How do they not understand that putting a baked roll and a raw tuna roll in the same to go container will ruin it. I don't just mean the same bag, literally in the same little plastic sushi box so the baked roll steamed the raw tuna. Then the box of fried jalapeno roll was on top for extra baking of the tuna.
