This is a much needed GEM on Shelter Island. From the moment we walked through the main dining area; to sit on the outdoor porch we were happy. The atmosphere both inside and out are genuine in soulfulness and charm. It is a wonderful place to spend time in and have a delicious meal. We went for brunch and were knocked out by the French Toast with Peaches and Blueberries ;and the "everything but the Bagel" offerings. Crazy deliciousness. We are headed back. Quite expensive for what it was. Window beside our table wouldn't open and no fan inside. Upon arrive they seemed to be annoyed that we had no reservation even though the entire inside was empty until we left. Definitely recommend the pancakes and eggs Benedict. Don't recommend the coffee or Bloody Mary. We also noted on the bill "bakery open item $36" This was the gratuity for a group of 6 or more. But there was still the request for a tip on the bill. In the city we would call this a hidden gem, in Shelter Island, I call it a hidden treasure. We came here during the Memorial Day weekend. One best thing in this island is probably this place that we visited for lunch. I checked the reviews before entering any places. The reviews were all positive so as a positive person, I said to hubby, let's go here. The restaurant is actually a home, sort of. It's like we're visiting Kyle at home, and she made some great food for her guests, something like that. So if Kyle decides to have an open house, we say let's go! Nice decor, cozy ambience, quiet neighborhood, luxurious food. We got it all! There's a small statue that I thought was cute standing on a decoration table. There's a pair of big folk and spoon on the wall. We parked the car at the back, plenty of parking so if you plan to come here on a bus trip, sure, you can have a bus trip to Shelter Island and come and eat here. There's some tables outside by the back porch too. We were greeted by a young boy, very pleasant and polite. He wanted to make sure we found our way in. Soonest we entered there's a man greeted us and asked to make ourselves comfortable. The moment he said that, I started taking pictures here and there, now that's comfortable! They need to not say that to me, because I'd really make myself too comfortable there (because the place is beautiful!). We ordered lunch. I had buddha style lunch and hubby had chicken gyro. Yahoo! I had the best rice, vegetable and shrimp bowl! Hooray! Hubby had the best chicken gyro! My dish is rice and vegetable and if you want with chicken or shrimp you have to pay extra, but truly worth it with the shrimp. It had some asian taste in it, a little sesame taste, so if you like asian taste, you should order this. I tried chicken gyro and that was great too. They also have the best french fries sweet potato style. Overall we hit a jackpot because we wouldn't know that we would end up at this superb food place. So delectable, palatable, fantastica! After we ordered, the Chef came out to say hello to us. She's Kyle! WOW! So glad to meet Kyle at Kyle's. I always enjoy meeting the Chefs of restaurants. We enjoyed our meals. Wow, this place is a gem! Though it was a lovely Sunday at 10 am, our party of 7 was seated immediately for breakfast. Our smiles started with the coffee (robust and satisfying) and were magnified when the dishes arrived. Wonderful chocolate chip pancakes, croissants served with strawberry butter, a delicious sausage and smoked gouda fritatta, amazing braised short ribs with eggs benedict (without the ham), and their multi-grain porridge served with apple slices was yummy too. Fabulous bakery on Shelter Island. Wonderful place to get a fantastic breakfast, be you an egg eater or a pastry person. One must-have from the bakery is her sinful jelly donuts. These don't behave like a standard donut; there's so much jelly in that puffed up pastry that it oozes out of the side. The sugary coating complements the raspberry perfectly, and the sweetness marries well with the fried dough. 10/10, would recommend you stop in and drool over the pastry case! read more

Kyle's Will Not Disappoint! Staying in Sag Harbor for a family event the day before we decided to make an Sunday morning visit to Shelter Island where I hadn't been for years. Hopped on the ferry ($17 one way $19 roundtrip . . . a bit pricey) but afterall we were on mini-vacation. In no time we came to Kyle's with three seating options - - inside table or bar, outside outback and outside under an awing or porch. We chose inside which is quaint industrial if that is possible. Beautiful mermaid paintings and sculpture. Nice relaxed vibe. Shortly I as sipping a fresh orange juice mimosa with my own 6 oz. bottle of Prosecco while Tom enjoyed his Bloody Mary. We were warned about the jelly doughnuts but were too slow to claim one of the last few. You must jump on the jelly doughnuts! Had delicious Egg Benedict, only one with the potatoes. Loved the egg that was perfectly poached but not the potatoes which were more like chips and not what I enjoyed or expected. Had a wonderful chocolate croissant that was light and fluffy with rich chocolate filling with my coffee for dessert. Tom had the short rib hash with poached eggs and enjoyed it but had a similiar reaction to the potatoes. Wait service was a bit slow but it was preseason and she had three areas to serve. Surely that will change as the season picks up. Kyle did circulate as well. As luck would have it Kyle made a few more jelly donuts and we took one to go. It was so very good! Stopped by for lunch yesterday with 2 friends. It was the 1st time for all of us. I had a delicious Greek turkey burger with amazing and addictive fresh house-made potato chips. Ine buddy had a hamburger with a salad. He said that it was perfectly cooked and very yummy. My other friend had what was effectively eggs benedict with short ribs and hash brown potatoes. He was very pleased with his meal. The service was friendly and attentive. We sat out on the patio which was a lovely setting. Kyle came out to greet us and spent time talking to us. Was a delightful meal and well worth the trip from Bridgehampton to Shelter Island. Highly recommend it. Got a bag of donuts to go. They were amazing! read more

I don't even know where to begin. Let me start by saying I'm not just a newbie weekender, I've been coming to shelter island for 35 yrs. I love how low key and understated this island is. I am far from high maintenance. With that said....I will NEVER come back here and have told the rest of my family to never come back. We waited a good 10min in the sweltering heat for water and menus. Fine. Ordered a Bloody Mary -they're out of tomato juice (it's Sunday of a summer weekend). Proceed to order brunch. They're all out of chicken. Really!?! Okay. We wait an HOUR for the food-during which we had to practically beg for more water and some ice. During this time....the owner struts in-talking to the kitchen staff AS she's walking thru our tables shouting into the kitchen. Then she comes out and says openly to 4 tables of ppl "you guys okay? Need help? No? Okay good-I can go back home now" huh???? So crash-so rude. From here we watch her attempt to help bring out food-she brings out a plate while chewing food from the kitchen-ew!! Then proceeded to berate her server in front of their table for not bringing enough syrup-so in professional. THEN!!! We ordered hash browns and when the food finally comes potato chips are with if-we say "excuse me we ordered a side of the hash". The owner says-"oh yea-were out of the hash-these are chips, theirs like the same thing just cut differently" um, yeah-no they're not. At all. AND-we should've been told you were out of the hash. Then we hear her screaming from the kitchen as she's eating saying "YO-these shoe rib hash are the bomb" (a-thought you were out of hash, and b-be professional, you sound like a child) Overall it was a disaster-my Buddah bowl was less than mediocre and coat $22 waste-it was so hot when it came out and swimming in grease. My son and husbands "burrito" was a folded over tortilla-not a burrito. This was an absolute mess. I will never come back-biggest waste of money and left hungry and angry. Buyer beware-there's SOOO many better places for food on the island. read more

Great gem of a bakery serving amazing croissants and other goodies. Croissants are as good as any I've had at numerous Parisian patisseries. Their new 'Cruffin', a cinnamon roll muffin is sweet and creamy good. Also very pleasant for breakfast, brunch or lunch though a bit pricey but in line with the other pricey island eateries. We are local on Shelter Island, and had heard that the new and improved Kyle's was worth a visit. We saw some mediocre reviews on yelp, but decided to find out for ourselves. We called and made a last minute reservation on a Thursday night without a problem, 7:30 PM, 4 people. Maybe that should've been a sign. Anyway, we arrived and had our choice of any table in the entire restaurant indoor or outdoor bar, as there was no one else there, except for a couple sitting at the bar. We ordered a variety of things, the shrimp/pesto toast (so so), burrata w red peppers (slightly better than so so), 2 different pizzas - one plain, one with mushrooms (both soggy and bland). I am assuming that it was Kyle herself who served us, and she was not unfriendly, but lacked any charm or charisma. She did offer us dessert, but we decided we would be better off at the Tuck shop. Dinner cost us about $150. We won't be going back. read more

We had our "rehearsal dinner" pre-wedding celebration at Kyle's on October 2, 2015. Kyle worked with us to create the menu. We had planned on having the event catered in our home, but with the pending hurricane, we moved indoors to Kyle's. We were going for casual comfort food, and serving local beers. Kyle knocked it out of the park! Pulled pork, brussel sprout slaw, grilled shrimp... just to name a few. She even created a homemade pretzel station with dips, to compliment the local beers. Dessert was banana cupcakes and whoopie-pies! I can't recommend Kyle enough as a caterer, or as restauranteur. We often go there for breakfast, get there early for the doughnuts! For dinner, everything is delicious... but we recommend ordering off the specials menu. read more
