If I were to rate Kyoko's sushi based on all the sushi I've ever eaten, I'd give it a 3 out of 5 stars. For what I've tried in the area so far, I give it 4 out of 5 stars. Definitely the only place where I've actually enjoyed the sushi. My 5 stars overall is for our server (a petite woman with curly hair). My daughter has a lot of food allergies so eating out with her is tricky. We found a noodle mixed in her edamame (she has a known anaphylaxis to wheat) and informed our server. At this point, we'd already paid the bill and didn't think anything would change. We simply wanted to inform her what happened. She immediately replaced our daughter's order of plain white rice and edamame, packed it to go, and apologized profusely for it. I was so impressed - I wished all servers handled my daughter's food allergies seriously and graciously like that without making her feel self-conscious. I'd return again for such service alone. On to our food.. I really enjoyed my soft shell crab. It was extra crisp and the crab itself super flavorful. Dismayed that they didn't have takoyaki the day we came. I bet they make it great as well. Husband enjoyed the pork buns. As aforementioned, sushi is the best quality we've had in the area so far. I will say reviews that note the high amount of rice in the nigiri and maki have some merit. Nigiri was two bites per piece for me and I struggled even holding a piece of maki. Size isn't necessarily a complaint. Just thought it was noteworthy. I liked how the tempura in the bamboo roll was actually crispy. Price point seems fair for the area. Only actual complaint is there was an uncomfortable delay between receiving our appetizers and the rest of our food. But nothing major that would keep us from returning. We love sushi and I hate to write a bad review for a local business, but this place was awful. It was dirty, infested with bugs, the restaurant smelled, we waited way too long for our food, and, when it did come out, the food didn't taste or smell fresh. We ended up throwing it all away. Pleasantly surprised by our experience at Kyoko's. We started with the gyoza and edamame, which were both delicious. We shared the chicken teriyaki for our meal and it was incredible. I've seen a lot of reviews in this section talking about the cleanliness of the restaurant. As someone who's worked in restaurants before, I can tell that it is aged more than anything else. In talking to the owner, Yusuke, I've learned that he has owned this restaurant by himself since 1986. The building has not been renovated since but is cleaned thoroughly. The food was wonderful, but did take a little bit of time to come out. I only saw one man working at the sushi bar so that might be part of why. I would suggest that anyone tries this gem. read more

Would give 0 stars if that was an option. Unsanitary and disgusting. Our table was dirty and not wiped down after the previous people, dirty floor and bathroom. Waitress didn't take our order for 40 minutes. When the food finally arrived she had forgotten half our order, and thank god because what came out was not worth eating. The plates were dirty, either their dishwasher is on strike or they just couldn't be bothered. Had to spit out ROTTEN fish. We loved our experience at Kyoko! Our waitress (I believe her name was Olivia!) was super sweet and attentive. We ordered the Agemono Sampler to start. It was a lot of fried food but it was fun to sample some items including the soft shell crab! For rolls we ordered Firecracker, tuna avocado, zesty avocado, and Kamikaze (our favorite!). Kyoko has had its ups and downs in my eyes over the years and after my last visit, I think I will be choosing other spots for sushi and Japanese food. For our most recent visit, my wife ordered several rolls and I got a tempura roll, a salad, and an appetizer. I opted for pick up and was told it would be 45-60 minutes for our food to be ready. the appetizer we wanted to try (chicken kushikatsu) was not available and they also did not have ginger dressing for our salads. Knowing that there are rampant staffing challenges, general supply chain issues, and them being a small restaurant, this was not a surprise, but still disappointing. When I stopped in 45 minutes later to pick up our food, I was bummed to find that it had been done for quite some time. My tempura roll was no longer warm and it was clear the food estimate had been way off. Upon getting our dinner home, we both agreed the food wasn't all that great and we should stick to our normal spots for future orders. While I believe Kyoko used to be a great spot in Fayetteville, I sadly can't recommend them anymore. read more

Ok let's set the record straight: this is a VERY good sushi place. I know the reviews are mixed, but humans are fickle and easily swayed by unimportant factors. So let me tell you that 1. The food is great. Fong is an accomplished and creative sushi chef with real talent. 2. The service is exceptional. Theresa is a rare find in the food service industry - go, put my words to the test. You'll see I'm right. Now listen, no restaurant is perfect. It's an old building, typical for the northeast, and comes with the quirks typical for such. Don't let that be an issue - it isn't. So, to summarize: fantastic food, a nice neighborhood location, sublime service, great beer, wine and sake, and reasonable prices. I just think you'll be better for the experience, like I am. I will start this as I always do by saying that I don't give out five stars unless I am really blown away. I have been coming here for what seems like a long time now. I have had great experiences and some not so great. Even with the bad experiences I still give them 4 stars. I have stopped in 3 times during this pandemic and each time has been well worth it. The most important part is that the sushi was good. It makes me want to come back. This is pretty normal for Kyoko's food is that it is good. They do a good job of social distancing and worker wearing masks. This obviously is important during these crazy times. I look forward to the world getting back to normal soon so I can come back in for half price Wednesday's. I love coming on Wednesday's for half price it is something I look forward to. I love the rainbow roll and the kamikaze roll. Just putting in a review makes me want to order again. The appetizers here are always good to. I am sure before this whole pandemic is over I will order from here again. If you like Sushi I suggest you do the same. read more

I have to shake my own head at my first comment. I have since started ordering and trying new things from Kyoko and I am very happy with everything. The takoyaki is one the most tender and delicious appetizers I have ever had!! I'm so glad I finally gave this place a second chance, because now I have a new place to call a favorite. I still think the rice is a little too thick for the rolls, I would prefer more filling. However I don't know how I'll ever live without the gudetama roll every again, instant favorite!! read more

The service was slow and the food was okay--except that we didn't get some food we ordered, and did get some food we didn't we sent it back--but should have kept it!). Waited so long for water during the service that I went out to my car and got us bottles of water. It was a Sunday, with few diners (only 2 when we got there). What it lacks in atmosphere Kyoko has decent sushi. This is down the street from the Parochial Pinhead mecca known as the Hornet's Nest (townie bar..). Was here for work...the burbs of Fayetteville and Manlius have some charm to them. Granted, these Syracuse burbs are also terminally boring (like Wegman's is really a community social center)...but an evening dining at Kyoko was just fine and a nice diversion from Syracuse (a city actually improving somewhat away from my "Akron 1974" moniker...). read more

A Friday night disaster! We were waiting for 30 mins to get appetizer, and another 30 mins to get entrees. The restaurant was understaffed and was a mess. We found six or seven tables are waiting like us for more than a hour without food served. What's worse is the food was incredibly bad. I ordered Katzu Don and the rice was raw and meat was like prepared a week ago. My wife's entree is supposed to be served with white rice, but they miss it. We just left and finished our worst dining experience ever! read more

I've been coming here occasionally for several years and I've watched the quality consistently deteriorate. Tonight tipped the scale and we won't be back. Our poor waitress was alone and while it was clear she was doing her best, she couldn't adequately cover all the tables in a timely manner. Every step of the way took way too long - getting seated, taking our drink order, ordering our dinner, getting our food, and getting our bill. The most frustrating part is that they have done a Happy Hour with half-priced drinks and appetizers until 7 for years. This is why we made sure we arrived at 615. And this was listed in their menu. Imagine my surprise when, after we ordered, we found out that this was no longer being honored. Trust me, it wasn't worth full price. The last time we came, we waited 15 minutes to even be acknowledged. When we weren't, we left. Tonight was our last try. Sadly, we won't be back. Too costly and the poor quality of the food and beverage was not worth the cost. Thank you to our waitress for doing her best to remedy a disappointing situation. One of my worst restaurant experiences. When we walked in, it smelled like a public bathroom. We waited about 1 hour 30 min for our food, only for them to have 3 out of the 5 dishes come incorrectly and one of the dishes not even come. We asked the waitress for more water, and it never came. The waitress, named Kiera, gave us attitude throughout the entire meal, walking away as we were speaking. It made it very difficult to communicate or even want to communicate with her. The inaccuracy alongside the attitude really made me not want to ask for the dish they forgot. Although the sashimi was fresh, the cooked foods were mediocre. It started out with just the right amount of tang...Kyoto has a great deal on Local Flavor ($20 for $40) which is what brought us in. We tried the Japanese Nachos just because it sounded so outrageous. The topping was super tasty, though the tortilla chip could have been substituted for a fried wonton to make the dish a bit more cohesive. We were one of three pairs in the restaurant on a Monday evening, however it took over 40 minutes for us to finally get the 3 rolls that we ordered, which was quite a bummer. Had we not been waiting hungrily for so long, we might not have noticed that the decor really didn't make for good sushi vibes. If you find yourself in the same situation, be sure to check out the ceiling - that'll take up a good 90 seconds. Full disclosure: we took the rolls to go, so we didn't get the dine in experience. The spicy crunchy tuna roll was definitely good, other 2 were just ok (California and dinosaur). Word of advice: get the coupon on Local Flavor and plan for pick up. read more

We went here on a weekend based on a friend's recommendation, luckily we had reservations as it fills up fast and isn't large. We tried the steamed dumplings, fried shrimp, raw tuna salad, bento special box, and the super deluxe sashimi and sushi box. Overall the meal was fine... I honestly expected more! Don't get me wrong the fish was all very fresh, the flavors were on point... Especially the pork and beef in the bento special box. But something was missing for me. Authentic, fresh, and traditional. This is the best Japanese cuisine I've ever had by far. I'm from NYC and have had sushi all over, out in Chicago, and locally around here and this place offers the highest quality, you could only hope to match it. I knew just how good it was when I tasted the layers of flavors in the pork bun, with home made pickles, I bet it's all made from scratch its so good, and the pork belly was seared just right. The best one can say is that the restaurant looked nice from the outside. Everything inside was awful. The server was apathetic and service was slow. The waitress forgot our miso soup appetizer and only brought it out after we got our sushi. The odor in the restaurant was horrible, service was slow, the miso soup was cold, the gyoza dumplings were deep fried but empty and fried too long to leave a hard shell, and the sushi--traditional nothing fancy--was barely edible. The sushi was not fresh, they were packed loosely, falling apart, and was generally unappealing (black or gray tuna?). The music only made the experience even worse... muzak as the music choice. Can you believe that? Bad idea. This place needs an emergency visit from Chef Ramsey. It needs a major renovation and new vision, perhaps even new management. read more

Sad to say one of our favorite places to go to eat has taken a nose dive in service and food . We have been going for a few years but won't be going back . The last few time have been a bad experience . They are always out of the wasabi shumai my wife likes for starters ! The service was slow as well and felt the waitress was not very friendly ! Went there on a Saturday night around 7:30. There was no one there. One table of four was just finishing up. While we were there two people came in and sat at the sushi bar. That should have been a warning. Place is dirty and has a distinct odor (not a good one). Waitress was friendly enough but not that attentive especially considering we were her only table. We ordered Vegetable tempura as an appetizer. It was okay - greasy and we wondered what some of the vegetables were. Not good. Miso soup was fine. Seems hard to screw that up though. Beef teriyaki was next. Not bad. The meat and sauce were good but the pieces were huge and impossible to eat with chopsticks. Had to ask for a knife. Wife tried to order Yaki Soba special. It was sold out..surprising since there was no one there. Got tofu teriyaki.. just OK Sushi was awful. Spicy tuna. Tuna was grey and nasty. Roll was falling apart. Worst sushi I've ever had. Also a small kid was running around from the kitchen into the dining room. Not a fan of that either. We will not be back... sushi better at Wegmans. Taking location into consideration, this is the best Sushi I've had in upstate New York. Don't expect anything too fancy as the chef keeps the menu pretty short. He does have a few special rolls to appeal to all tastes, so even if you're weary of sushi there's something for you. If nigiri is your thing then this has some of the better fresh fish for its location. Don't expect the quality to be mind blowing but it'll definitely cure a craving. read more

I'm really surprised about all of the positive reviews. I think a two would be stretching it. We came here due to wanting sushi and Ichiban being across town so we figured that we would try this place. It was pretty empty so we were excited about the hopefully better service and faster food. Well the service was fine, but the food was not. Most of the sushi that we had was fishy especially the tuna. For the price that we paid you would have thought it was a lot of food but it wasn't. I felt sick all night after eating here and two nights later we went to Ichiban so that I could get my fix. There is nothing in the world that would get me to come back here, I think wegmans sushi is much better. read more
