Shortly after, my sister's card was charged an extra $14.16, exceeding the $68 total for three individuals. Apparently, the woman had included an unauthorized 20% tip. When we confronted her, she denied any responsibility. Hanukkah fell on Christmas for the first time in almost 20 years and we met friends for a dual celebration dinner. This place is so good the drive-thru outside, pick-up inside, and table service were all packed. We had reservations for 5:30. Staff were hopping the entire time we were there! Amazing job!! I will start this week I always do by saying that I don't give out five stars unless I am really blown away. I have been eating here for a about 7 or 8 years now. Most of the time it is for the all you can eat sushi. They have a Chinese cuisine menu and a Japanese cuisine menu. The restaurant is nice enough very much what you would expect for an Asian style restaurant. They have a little sushi counter when you first walk in and group of tables to the right. The staff is always friendly and give good service. Like I said we have been to the restaurant a bunch of times over the years never had a bad meal but it's always been of the Japanese side of the menu. That part has always been good. This last time we went we were picking up to go Chinese. Our other go to location was closed. When I called in the order I was looking for delivery and found out they didn't do that. They told me 40 minutes. They were a little shorter than that. We ordered chicken sticks they were good. Tempura shrimp and vegetables. It was okay only two shrimp mostly sweet potatoes. Ordered steamed dumplings they were not what we were looking for they were steamed wontons kind of flavorless and not dumping like. Also tried something called then Phoenix and the dragon. Again it was okay. We will go back but not for Chinese only sushi and Japanese appetizers. read more

My family and I have been coming here since it opened (2004 or so). The chinese food is pretty good, but the sushi is absolutely fantastic. Even though they've stopped doing the all-you-can-eat sushi, the Maki combo is still a great deal. The sushi is always delicious - I have yet to eat better ("5-star" sushi in Ft. Myers tastes almost as good as Oriental Star, and 3x the cost!) It's a family-owned restaurant, and the staff has always been extremely polite and has never once messed up an order in the ~18yrs we've been going. (Even if they did, I'd still give it 5 stars!) Also, I love the genmaicha tea + soup that we always get before our meal. People complain on here (about everything, really...) that if you don't finish the all-you-can-eat, you have to pay for the leftovers, and you can't share sushi. Although it's true, every other all-you-can-eat place I've went to does this as well, and considering they probably lose $ on big eaters like me (I do ~5-6 rolls), you're getting a VERY reasonable deal. You can always order a few rolls, see how you feel, and order more. To me, it's more of an experience I enjoy than a rule that bothers me. I'd rather pay $25 for good sushi than $50, but that's just me! Also, it should be pretty obvious why they wouldn't want people to share the all-you-can-eat sushi... you'd be mad at customers too, if you were the owner! I should have been skeptical when I picked up the takeout bag and it was very heavy for having paid so little. The waitress was too concerned with repeatedly telling me that I had to eat all the sushi I ordered or I would pay extra...she said this 3-4 times and also made sure to tell me that I was not allowed to give a single piece to my wife or 3 children. The sushi was good but used an excessive amount of rice, which looked like an attempt to make it so you had to pay more when you couldn't finish. The rolls available on the AYCE are their $9.99 or less rolls, no special rolls are included (most AYCE sushi bars offer a nice selection of special rolls with the deal), also no sashimi or hand rolls, I think they have the total wrong idea of how to run an AYCE special. read more

My wife and I have eaten at Oriental Star many times, and both the service and the food have always been just fine. If we order take out, our order is always ready as promised and well prepared.Last night, it was a horror, and while I had mixed feeling about posting a review, I just am so annoyed that I feel compelled to share our experience. Arrived at 6:15 pm with my wife, son and daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren. When asked for our drink order, we also ordered our food...nothing special...two soups, fried wontons, egg rolls, chicken with garlic sauce, moo shoo pork, and vegetable chow mein. First just the soup was served, then 10 minutes later, egg rolls, then 10 minutes later the fried wontons, and that's all she wrote. At the 45 minute mark we asked where dinner was, and the waitress muttered something about soon. You have to understand that we were with two children 7 and 9, and sitting at a table without food for 45 minutes is hard to deal with under the best of circumstances. At the 57 minute mark, I told the waitress that if the food wasn't on the table in 3 minutes, we were history... Got the check and went to pay, and spoke with either the owner or manager, who had not made an appearance before. I asked what was the issue, and all she said was "I know you; you are a good customer...very sorry". Not good enough...no adjustment to the bill; no explanation. Meanwhile, there were two gentlemen waiting for their takeout order, and the had been there for at least 45 minutes. Will I be back? Maybe...I'm a pissed? You bet... Wound up with probably healthier salads at Wegmans, and home at 8:45 pm from a dinner which started at 6:15 pm. read more

Fish was perfectly done, big thick pieces of fish on excellent sushi rice. 2. one of us had the lo mein and there was a distinct Wok Hai to the dish. You just don't get wok hai that much up here, and this place does it. 3. the unagi don was perfect 4. I've had the chirashi sushi here a lot and it's out of this world: all the fish is prepared perfectly, the rice is perfect, nice dusting of sesame seeds and slivered nori. My husband and I come here every once in a while for dinner (for the all-you-can eat sushi), and we also order the sushi lunch box every now and again as well. The lunch deal is quite good, three types of rolls for 10 bucks including a salad. I love to get the salmon avocado - that combo of creamy avocado and flavorful salmon is just so good! For the all you can eat sushi, you can choose from a fairly wide variety of rolls and nigiri (no sashimi). We love sushi and we're not afraid to eat raw fish, so this is a good deal for us since the fish is what makes sushi so expensive! It's not really worth it if you're into the more vegetarian rolls. Rainbow roll, salmon avocado, eel avocado, tuna avocado and shrimp tempura are some of our favorites. I do think that the sushi is quite well done - the rice has a nice texture and isn't a gloppy thick layer around the roll, which is a pet peeve of mine. Thick rice in sushi always seems to me like they're trying to make you full with less money - after all, rice is cheap! Service-wise, we've never had a problem with waiting times and the wait staff have always been very pleasant. It is the FIRST place visitors from out of town want to order in from after a long day... they really look forward to ordering sushi after our excursions and opening tray and tray of rolls after we pick them up. We ordered for the first time supporting local small businesses during these tough times. Although the food was good, one of the items we ordered was a Shrimp Tempura Roll. A roll consists of 6 pieces right? Well in that 6 piece roll there was only 1 piece with shrimp. In paying for a shrimp tempura I'd expect shrimp to be in at least 3 or 4 of the pieces. Its outside appearance may put you off at first but just wait until you come inside! Oriental Star has very good sushi for some of the lowest prices in Syracuse. It is located by two other very good sushi bars but it holds its' own with phenomenal prices ($20 for all you can eat sushi!) and phenomenal quality. The services is very authentic to a real sushi bar experience, first with your choice of miso soup/salad with ginger dressing, then the sushi comes plated beautifully on a serving dish, and to round of the meal hot towels and orange slices! Poor being equivalent of Panda Express, average being what is typically found in most small towns and large cities, nothing memorable but eatable none the less. Above average while not a standout will pull me in to satisfy my Chinese fix. Excellent Chinese is a very rare thing and I have only sampled a handful of those. Oriental Star while not serving a memorable meal certainly will give you a competent meal when craving Chinese. I'm not a sushi lover but for those that are the sushi looks very good and is offered as an optional All You Can Eat for $22. That surely seems like a good deal. Prices for entrees, soups, etc. are very reasonable. Service is not too bad, though is has not been very busy on each occasion that I have visited. read more

This is my favorite place to eat sushi in Syracuse area. It is very reasonably priced a la carte, or you can get "all you can eat" sushi for ~$22. To be totally honest, there isn't anywhere in Syracuse to get GREAT sushi, but this is probably the best in the area. It's also extremely reasonably priced. I had been going to Sakana-Ya (whose Fayetteville location is literally right around the corner from Oriental Star), and this place is seriously about half the price, and I like the sushi better. If you want really fancy loaded rolls, I wouldn't come here (try Sakana-Ya downtown for that) but for the basic standbys, this is the spot. The salmon nigiri is gorgeous- super fresh and a generous slice of fish. I trek out here all the way from the west side when I get a sushi craving.
