For Mother's Day my husband took me to Yamasho for some sushi. I was excited to try it as I've seen really good reviews on the sushi before and I was not disappointed! We ordered the fried oysters (kaki fry), white tuna roll and the sushi deluxe x2. The fried oysters tasted fresh and were nice and crispy. The oysters did not taste overly fishy either. It came with a Thai chili sauce that complimented the dish well. As for the sushi, the white tuna roll and the sushi deluxe was probably the freshest tuna and salmon I've had in Syracuse. The rice to fish ratio was perfect. The ginger was tasty. The miso soup was a little bland and the salad was standard for sushi restaurants. Overall, I had a really amazing time here. Its been a while since I was here... So I was excited to go to celebrate a friend's birthday. I've eaten there but never had hibachi. They are friendly and accommodating, allowing us to bring in a cake. ( With no "upcharge or "fee") The hibachi chef was doing his "thing" and it's always so fun to watch. The onion ring of fire always freaks me out a little, lol, but I love when people try to catch the food in their mouths. The hibachi soup was flavorful and the salad had that delicious, sweet ginger dressing on it. Some of us ordered sushi as well as a hibachi dinner. The sushi was very fresh and made a nice appetizer before our meal. I got the noodles specifically to bring home, but didn't realize it had a small "extra " charge. The shrimp I ordered was a nice size portion, I could have used more vegetables but overall it was very good. It was a nice setup as you walk in, there were regular tables and then the hibachi on the other side. We were seated and waited on quickly, the chef was wonderful and entertaining. The restaurant has very nice size booths and table a on one room and all Hibachi tables in other . We 4 were led to a large table that sat 12. A family sat in other seats across from us with cook hibachi in center. Our chef came to the table and oh what fun!! He put sesame oil on grill and the flames went higher! Beautiful . He entertained us for sure. He explained every step. Some ordered shrimp . Some tofu. Some steak. He cut up fresh veggies and stir fried. The noodles were also stir fried as was the rice . The presentation was fantastic! Some had sushi rolls that were so delish and eye appealing . There were so many choices! And then the deserts!! Most oriental places do not have the choices ! My family usually goes to the same sushi restaurants when we go out but wanted to try something new this time. We saw that Yamasho got really good reviews so had dinner there. It's located in a plaza with plenty of parking. The interior is split in half, one side has the bar and dining room tables. The other side is hibachi. The bar area was also split in half. One side for drinks and the other side was for the sushi chefs. Staff was friendly and helpful. We ordered a few apps to share. The broiled squid was definitely very strong in flavor. My mom liked it but I thought it was too fishy for me. The kids loved the shrimp tempura although I wish there was more than 2 shrimp. Chicken wings were crispy. We got edamame on the house which were very fresh compared to other places. For the sushi, we ordered a bunch or rolls. Although they were all different rolls, they taste pretty similar. My fav was the kiss of fire while my son loved the spider roll. My mom had the hibachi which she said was good, filet was tender. My son liked his bento box. For dessert, we tried the xango cheese cake. The outside was a crispy with a cinnamon sugar coating which was delicious but I wasn't a big fan of the cheesecake filling which was surprising because I love cheesecake. It came with a scoop of ice cream and whipped cream. The tempura ice cream was good but I wish the outside was crispy. The tempura was very light though. Prices were reasonable and service was good. We had reservations for 9. We sat right away & all on time. Took 8-10 minutes to be greeted for drinks. Food orders were taken, chef and meal: good. Steak was overcooked, but everything else was good. Not great. No one checked on us, make sure everything was ok, need anything? No one at our table was asked about drinks, nothing. we sat with empty glasses, no sauces etc. We even had one from our party ask for drinks for the table, waters and cocktails. After dinner we sat for 15+ to ask for boxes. It was my sons birthday, (his actual birthday) told at time of reservation. They didnt do anything. Didn't even sing or ask of we wanted deserts. Party across from us left after being seated for over 30 minutes and no service. After we paid our bill, $440+ for 9. We had to wait another 10 for our credit cards to be ran. We arrived around 5 PM on a Friday after having not been here in too many years. My last experience was really positive as was this current one. Upon entering, we were immediately seated, and a young lady took our order for drinks. The drink menu is extensive and there are some Japanese beers available as well as sake. The menu was quite extensive and includes variety of appetizers, sushi, rolls, main dishes, and desserts. They also have a nice children's menu and there were many families in attendance. We sat a regular table but the hibachi tables were having a great time as evidenced by the clapping and cheering emanating from the next room. It is nice to hear people having fun in a restaurant. I started with a huge Sapporo beer, because why would you drink anything less? We were provided some edamame as a treat. I ordered the salmon Bento box and my husband had the vegetarian Bento box. The nice thing is they give you a selection of appetizer, soup, or salad, type of sushi roll and type of rice to go with the box . You can have white rice, fried rice, or in my case brown rice. The edamame appetizer was great as was the miso. In the bento box, The salmon was a little bit on the dry side. I ordered a spicy tuna sushi roll which was kind of puréed in the middle rather than fresh fish. That put me off a little. In retrospect, I should have ordered a sushi roll as an appetizer. All in all, this is a great place with great staff, and the food comes out fairly quickly. Best of all, I was able to get a $30 certificate for $15 on the Flavor site. Will definitely go back but won't order the mushy tuna sushi roll. read more

Had dinner with my daughter and her fiance here on a Sunday evening. The place was mostly empty, but there were a few parties at the hibachi, and a few other tables in the dining room. One surprise is that when there is a birthday, they bring out a mini-taiko drum and beat it while singing happy birthday. Food was top notch. Looked through previous reviews, the unagi sashimi (eel) was amazing, Valentine's Day roll was very good as well. (sorry about the picture of the half eaten plate of sushi rolls. I was a little slow getting a picture of that one). The sashimi was very fresh and well prepared. The filet and scallop hibachi dinner was very good as was the filet and lobster dinner. Everything was cooked perfectly to order. Food presentation was great, staff and service was great and were very friendly/accommodating. Multiple servers are collecting dishes off tables as they pass by instead of a single person, so that's a plus. The wait wasn't long and even though it was a pretty steady stream of customers inside, the servers were on top of everything. We got some extra sushi and a desert to go because it was that good! I highly recommend the unagi. The tuxedo bomb was incredible. OMG. Our server was extremely accommodating and easy to talk to. Definitely a plus to such a nice experience. Everything tasted great! Only somewhat negative thing I could say is the clear soup at the beginning could have had a little more flavor (perhaps more green onion or scallion) but wasn't a major issue, just more of a personal criticism/preference. That was delicious! I ordered the small size because nobody wants to see me with too much sake on board! I ordered the lobster combo hibachi with steak, fried rice and soup instead of salad. The soup was a delicious miso soup. Fried rice was delicious but the lobster tail and steak were so good! I couldn't finish so much food and we got a little extra sake surprise. Decided to try dessert fried cheesecake! Cheesecake dipped in a tempura batter. Warm creamy and delicious. I brought home a take out menu. I think I might've originally dined in here a few years ago but my memory's foggy so I can't say for sure. I've heard great things about this place so am making a note to come back and sit in one day! I got the vegetable maki combo which had a Peanut Avocado Roll, Sweet potato Roll, and A.A.C (avocado and cucumber?) Roll, along with a choice of miso soup or salad. I went with the salad, which was fresh by bland iceberg lettuce and a fairly zingless dressing. Not the best sushi house salad I've had, but not a dealbreaker. The sushi itself was delicious, and a good value for the price. My whole meal was around $18, on a weekend evening no less. The peanut avocado roll was crunchy and excellent, and the sweet potato roll was warm and creamy in exactly the right way. Yamasho is one of the first new places I tried after moving back to Syracuse, and it's been the sushi place next door ever since. It's one of my favorite things, but casual sushi is far out of my price range for day to day eating. On my birthday last year I ordered the Sushi for 2 for take out and ate it myself. (My girlfriend was home, but wasn't feeling it. Or maybe she just wanted to see if I was serious about eating $52.00 worth of sushi by myself.) I'm nowhere near as well travelled as I wish I was when it comes to sushi, but outside of the excitement of being off work with no holds barred, I ranked the quality good, not great. The other places I've been before and after seem to taste fresher. Unrelated, I'm going to impart this wisdom for anyone who needs it (like I did, apparently). When you wake up in the morning hung over and ready to die, leftover sushi is not what you're looking for. I've managed to talk myself into trying some of the better looking rolls and items. I don't know enough to know what I'm going to get by the name, or even really by reading the ingredients, but I've had a great time shooting for spicy and crunchy. I've scoured my photos and I'm missing a ton from this place, which feels like a tragedy. Somewhere out there I have some great pictures of sushi rolls that each represent the transformation of a boring or wasted day into something worth remembering. We ordered some Bento Box dinner meals a while ago. We had an Uber offer to use and it turned into a full priced order from here instead. (Yeah, heads up. They use their own delivery staff, so while you can still order delivery, you won't qualify for Uber Eats delivery offers here.) Everything but the special sushi rolls has been a solid 4/5. The meat is pretty tough, and not a ton of food for a $25.00 meal. Loved the dumplings and gyoza. When going through the menu to verify a few things, I saw they added General Tso's, Orange Chicken and Red Curry. I almost put this review back into the queue, but I've been sitting on this place for too long and I'm already starting to lose photos. I will be back to see how my favorite wok items hold up against the average places I tend to get them from. Before seeing that, I wasn't really planning on going back when there are still so many other places to try. read more

We come here at least once a week, hands down our favorite sushi spot in Syracuse (and we are huge sushi snobs). I don't think I ever got a roll or a dish that wasn't delectable. Their sushis are made of high quality fishes, they even have Uni (which is hard to find in central NY)! Their drinks are OFF THE HOOK (especially Lychee martini, unfortunately not pictured) and very reasonably priced. Absolutely love yamasho's restaurant staff-attentive, nice, polite and customer focused, even when they are super busy.
