This restaurant was a huge disappointment. We have eaten at many sushi restaurants from Arizona to Colorado to Alabama and I must say we were extremely surprised at how awful the sushi was. It was not fresh. The tempura was hard and chewy. The all you can eat menu is only for those who are not diabetic. They did not have any diabetic options in terms of seafood platters or casseroles. The worst part of the dining experience was that the food was just plain awful. The menu does not offer many sushi options. Fake crab was available on nearly all the rolls. Something is just not right about this restaurant. The server felt the need to explain the business model surrounding the all u can eat option. The owner had already explained that they charge extra if you don't finish your food. They've instituted a "no food waste" rule where if you don't eat the tempura batter or the rice then one will get charged for it. It felt like we were in North Korea, for certain. We are huge sushi lovers! We frequented the Kyoto in Maple grove 1 or 2 times a month. Recently they got really relaxed On How they rolled their rolls. When they fall apart before you get to put it in the your mouth doesn't make for an enjoyable experience. Then the Coon Rapids opened and we found it more enjoyable! The people speak better English and easier to understand. Their rolls are plump and made well. I love that their rolls are cold and not like warm like maple groves. We stopped going to maple grove and will never go back. Coon Rapids is the best one! Coon Rapids is rarely packed and it doesn't feel like your sitting on top of each other. Maple grove uses too much rice and not enough filling. Parking at maple grove is better but still, they aren't as good. read more

They're a buffet, but if you don't want to pay that much you can just order off the menu for something individual. We started with the sushi and moved on to Fried Rice, Teppanyaki and ramen. We used to go to the location in Maple Grove, but we live in Blaine so it is a bit of a hike. Now that this Coon Rapids location is open, we go often. This is an all you can eat place. Do not expect fancy presentations because you will not get them. However, the quality of the fish is excellent and the rolls are very good. They don't overload the maki rolls with rice. The same can't be said for the hand rolls. So we just don't order handrolls. We tried the Sakura, Boston, and another that I can't remember the name - it had wasabi tobiko and a honey wasabi sauce. They were all excellent. We always have the BC roll. Truly, my only complaint is that when we order wine, and we are there before 6 (or on a Sunday), we have only had the 30% discount applied twice. All other times (and I can't count how many times we have been there) they do not take the discount. We have to ask for it. Last night, and the last time we went, we just gave them our card. When we got the credit card receipt, the discounts weren't there. Both times we had them re-run the card with the discounted amount. From now on we will just tell them, as they ask when we are finished, not to forget to add the discount. I have a feeling their management tells them not to include the discount because we have had several different servers and, other than 2 experiences, they all do not include the discount. A friend took me out to eat here this afternoon. We arrived about 25 minutes before lunch ended. Our servers were very good at bringing us plenty of stuff to eat before the price increase. In addition to the food, I enjoyed the chill-out lounge music in the background. Katsudon is a rice dish topped with a fried pork cutlet with eggs, a special sauce, and veggies. Comes with soup and salad. You get a pretty big plate. I often have leftovers. You can get your things to go too, if that's what you like. Lots of sushi choices. My friend swears by the red bean ice cream, but I have never had it myself. PRICE I think it's pretty darn reasonable. I think if you order a lot of sushi, it could get pricey, but I usually get a single order item. Doesn't cost much. Now I know what you're going to say...dang 4 stars for an AYCE sushi joint! But I tell you what, yes the food is typical for a sushi buffet so I won't be commenting or comparing to places like Sugarfish and Asuka (great sushi in LA). We had a sizeable table of 4 adults and 5 kids (which can be terrifying), and they were busy for lunch. Joe refilled every beverage no less than 5 times and was always courteous. This was my favorite place to eat... until March 8th, 2019 when my lunch partner and I got bad food poisoning. The only thing we had that was the same was the dumplings and shrimp tempura. We won't be back for a very long time, if ever. The service was awful too. The coke syrup was out so we asked for new cherry cokes because the syrup was out... they just added more grenadine. The waitress reached across our table instead of walking 2 more feet to had us our food from our side of the table, and it took forever to be checked in on until it was time to pay the bill. Then she wouldn't leave us alone. One of my pet peeves is a hovering waitstaff when taking about how much of a tip to leave. This location was hands down the best we've tried, until Friday. But we've noticed the lack of love and pride in the food recently (loosely rolled Maki, messy plates, dirty silverware). My wife and I decided to try this place. Not exactly the most clean place I have ever been, dirty floor was a bit concerning, you could see spilled food on the floor. The waiter was prompt, friendly, should really apply for a job somewhere else where his talents would shine. No outside food or drink, well yeah, you will be charged for wasted food... kinda makes me wonder what kind of place this is, and who they are catering too. My wife got a sexy lady roll, she enjoyed it and said it was good. I got 7 piece sushi. salmon, yellow tail and Tuna. Presentation was OK wrapped in a rose look, but it dull, colorless and was fishy tasting, the texture was also all wrong clearly indicating it was old fish. Even my wife gagged when she tried it and she loves sushi. Maybe this is the all you can eat section? which we avoided for a reason.... We also ordered fried Gyota, I have never in my life had a Gyota swimming in grease that dripped off, they were disgusting. They were also over cooked and slightly burnt on the outside, not to mention TINY! I would say it might be a good place if you can't afford to go to a good sushi joint, but really they were not that cheep. Kyoto in Coon Rapids has the worst customer service of any restaurant I've ever been to. While eating there tonight I noticed something floating in my soda. It was brown and squishy, and had a very rotten smell. The server apologized, said it looks like a green tea leaf, and brought me a new drink. The smell was extremely unappetizing, so my husband and I struggled to eat the rest of our food. Rather than offering a discount for our $70 meal, the server had the audacity to tell us that they will be charging an additional $6 for the wasted food. They did ultimately waive the fee, but the damage has already done. We will no longer be eating there. read more

This place is amazing! We had the lunch buffet. You order off a menu and they bring it to you (as opposed to getting old food off a buffet line). The food and service was outstanding. We tried several different rolls, sushi pieces, udon, teriyaki salmon (awesome), teriyaki beef, gyoza, tempura (shrimp and vegetables), and miso soup. I thought the price to value was very good.
