Let me first start off and say that if you want quality, dedication, and integrity I promise you L & j's Design is absolutely head and shoulders above anything I've ever experienced before. I had to help my family out and was shocked at how insane things had gotten. I looked around to find help but the special care they took on the initial quote was stunning. The crew started and went to work and drove through the jungle and began the I clear it out. I'm not use to this much vegetation so it was astonishing how much they did each day. They spent 3 days working painstakingly in the sun, and did not stop until the job was done. It is the best the yard has looked since I was a kid. The owner deserves a beat on Virginia Beach award I mean it. I don't think there is a job too small or too big for them to take care of. So even if you speak to him and don't use them, I promise you will have an amazing experience talking to a man with a ton of integrity, respect, and great morals. He gave me the best price for this job, and I'm externally grateful for that. Their integrity carries profound wisdom. I submitted a request for a patio "make-over," and L&J was one of two to respond. A consultation was done within 48 hours of contact. He offered to service immediately; however, we held off until needed. His crew came out and removed several bushes, removed old mulch, replaced and made look new, as well as putting in a large section of pavers creating a seamless transition from patio to yard. And they did it in rather unpleasant weather. read more

After reading reviews about this company, I decided to give them a shot anyway but proved to be a waste of time. We originally had a quote scheduled and nobody showed up. I had to reach out to figure out where he was and why he didn't show. We ended up rescheduling and got the estimate done. James was friendly and professional during the estimate and I was excited to see what he could do for my project. Once I received the estimate, I contacted James to let him know I needed to adjust some things due to pricing and he never responded. I texted him multiple times to which he responded with family issues but then completely ghosted me after that. With that being said, the communication issues talked about in previous reviews are spot on. Would love to support smaller local businesses but truly it was a waste of my time. read more

I have attempted to call James and text him on numerous occasions to which I've not gotten a response.... September 28, October 9, November 6 and November 24. That was just text messaging alone not including calls in between. I have, according to him, a diseased tree and it will spread to others if not treated, mind you we have a one-year warranty contract not up until April 2025, and I did as he advised on our last actual conversation, September 21, I used a fungicide according to the directions and it has done nothing. My expectation is that he will replace the two trees that need to be replaced with something equivalent to the heights of the other trees that are growing fine. I expected to hear something back from him to which I have gotten not one word. This is very bad business. The follow up in regard to customer service is horrible. UPDATE: That is untrue. I have NOT heard back as you can see in the texts. I have emailed and gotten no response and every time I call no one answers. Replacing the trees is the expectation. If James is so sure of the disease I would expect you would get them replaced ASAP. All the other trees are just fine. You have not been out to my property since you installed as my ring cameras would have caught you. Also, if that was the case my trees would be replaced and we wouldn't be here. Uphold your contract. My contract and warranty are not with the nursery it is with you. You are the responsible party. I'm sure this will not get handled and this is how he does business. We contacted L&J through McDonald's nursery. They immediately responded to our need for a total review of a backyard "re-do". James advised he would call the following week to set an appointment, and never called back. We were surprised since he was quite enthusiastic when first contacting us. James and I discussed what my wife and I wanted done at length for the installation of an RV parking pad next to our house. Job was to install an RV parking spot 32 feet by 8 feet beside house. Excavate/remove 6 inches of dirt, maintain existing grade to allow for proper drainage away from house. Install landscape fabric, frame with landscape timbers. Install 2 inches of gravel at a time, compacting each time, for a total of 6 inches to ensure stability. He discussed the compacting process with me over the phone, and also told me that he would add a binder of some sort over the top to stabilize the gravel. The problem was, in retrospect, that none of these details were written down explicitly in the contract. Took out too much dirt towards back corner next to house (estimate approximately 6 inches too far down). Struck irrigation lines and repaired. Did not install landscape fabric, framed with landscape timbers on all sides except next to house. Added all gravel at one time, without compacting. Result is low spot next to house that will not properly drain due to non-conformance to existing grade, exposing foundation to possible water damage. I am willing to remove my negative review if the contractor is willing to come out to my house and fix the RV parking pad by restoring grade to remove low spot and compacting gravel to stabilize area. I contacted L & J through Yelp on 9/20. On 9/23 XXXX wrote to say my tree was diseased and would spread to other trees and that the job could be done that week. I was then told it would be done 9/28. I texted and emailed 9/28 asking what was going on (late morning & afternoon). No response. On Monday evening 9/30 I went on and left a yelp review saying, no one came or contacted me, etc. On Tuesday 10/1 XXXX, their CPA reached out via text to ask me to take down my bad review and explained there was a family tragedy. I took down the ad and was promised I would be well taken care of. 10/2 XXXX texted me and said he was out of town but the guys were finishing a paver job and that I was next. 10/10 XXXX texted saying they were trying to get to me on Saturday 10/12. 10/15 I text, what about my tree? 10/16 XXXX texts it will be done Friday or Saturday 10/18 or 10/19. 10/19 XXXX texts it will be done Saturday 10/19 or first thing Monday morning 10/21. 10/21 I get a text XXXX has chemo and can't do Monday. They will do Thursday 10/24. 10/23 I text, are we still on for tomorrow? No response. This is 8 appointments, 8 no shows, a lack of communication and many worthless promises... I would like a date and time for the removal of my tree since I have been dragged along for over a month. Following the above email, I was contacted by the crew leader saying he drove by my house 10/23 and he would have to contact and have a city arborist to come out since I had a lot of power lines. This update is in response to the feedback left from L&J Designs on April 30th on my review. About the communication: I have yet to receive any email from this company with the exception of the invoice that was initially sent. It is one thing to comment that "emails have been sent to the homeowner" when a simple text message will do. I did get a simple Text message that James was in Ohio, but the cancer part was not included. Pictures of text messages have been posted with dates. James did explain to me proper care, and it was followed to the letter. Yes the dogs walked on the grass, but they did not pee on it. There is one spot that the dog peed on and it is in the pictures. The spot is the size of my foot, not an entire section. There was an issue with the sections of sod that was laid, there is no other explanation. I have no issue with James taking care of his health issues, but when you promise a customer to come over every other week to check on the progress and then never show up, but instead go on vacation to the Bahamas, I have a problem with that. When I call the company phone number, I get no answer. I get a text immediately after that states, "Please text me." No answer is received from my texts. This review is all about accountability.... Do not say one thing, and then not follow through! If you are having scheduling issues, communicate that. If you are indeed trying to email a customer, ensure you have the correct email and send a simple text message that says an email has been sent. This is not rocket science, it is simple customer support. Once again, the initial work done by Jame's crew was great, there is just an issue with some of sod that has been laid and he needs to be accountable for it. I have all the time lapse pictures to back up everything I have stated in these reviews. If only he would reach out to me and inform me of his plans to correct the situation, everything would be great. I am writing this intentionally late to see if I had buyers remorse. Absolutely none. After meeting with several contractors James was breath of fresh air. He had ideas that actually exceeded our expectations and committed to our original budget. We did have a couple of change orders that he accommodated. Normal lead time and weather delays the project was finished timely. We are very happy with the results. Overall I would definitely recommend this company, only caveat is make sure open lines of communication are established. read more

I was looking to have some privacy trees installed around my backyard. They responded very quickly and were extremely knowledgeable. I felt like I had a million questions but James was very patient and answered each and every one of them. They went above and beyond to make me feel like a member of the family and to make sure that my backyard looked amazing.
