BEWARE!!! Never give this man an advance payment! Hired Home & Land Repairs (Nick) through Yelp for two jobs: repairing holes in the soffit and repairing/replacing the solar panel wiring that squirrels had chewed through, plus installing a critter guard to prevent it from happening again. The agreed total was $850 including parts and labor. He repaired the soffit holes. Throughout the job he repeatedly asked for advance payments, which I reluctantly provided. About two weeks in he requested an additional $800, saying the job was more difficult and the new wiring was expensive. I paid for the wiring myself out of pocket and we agreed to add $500 to the original price. The next day he asked for another $400 advance. At that point I had paid $1,000 up front. He arrived one day several weeks ago to work on the wiring. After a couple of hours he said he was taking a three-hour break and never returned. Later that night he texted that he would be back early the next morning to continue. He did not show up. That was 11 days ago and he has ignored all my attempts to reach him since. This was not the first disappearance. Earlier in the job he left for about a week without explanation. We discussed the need for better communication and he agreed, but the same pattern continued. He has also left my extension ladder propped against the house for several weeks (I had allowed him to use it), a strap still dangling from the roof, and a table set up in the front yard. The solar wiring work remains unfinished and the property has been left in this condition. I expected the work to be completed as agreed and for basic communication about schedule changes. We hired Nick to do a very difficult task. Years of storms had washed debris, trash and reeds into the overgrown brush and vines in our backyard. The result was an entangled mess of damp, heavy, hard to remove roots, lumber, plastic and various other junk. I think a picnic table and half rotten pallet had been washed in there as well. And to add to it, our backyard is at a slope with limited access so everything had to be hoofed up the incline by foot to the street to be hauled away. Nick crushed it. He cut down the vines and shrubs and took away literal mountains of waste. He communicated well and kept us updated on his progress. I reached out to Nick on November 10th to get a quote on repairing some structural damage on my screened-in porch. I also asked to have the porch rescreened. He got back to me quickly and began work on the 14th after we discussed payment and the extent of the repairs. He showed up consistently and completed the job on the 17th. In the initial photos, you couldn't tell anything was wrong. It wasn't till I got home after work that I noticed several issues. 1. Gutter removed and not reattached- In the process of fixing the porch, Nick had to remove the gutter. When the project was completed, he never reattached it. I brought this issue up three separate times through text messages, asking if it would be reattached when I got home, where the pieces had been put, and if he could reattach it. This was never done and I still need to find a way to reattach my gutter. 2. Construction debris left behind- I found a concerning number of nails and staples in the area surrounding the porch. There were also several boards (some with nails) left in my yard. This was left behind even after he called and asked me if I wanted him to take away the lumber used/produced by the project upon completion. 3. Screws sticking out- There are several areas where the pointed ends of screws/nails were sticking out in the wood that were never filed down or taken care of. 4. Column support board crack- In one of the large support columns, there's a significant crack at the base. Instead of calling to explain the damages or what could be done to repair it, he drove several nails into it and continued the project. When I brought this up to him through text messages, he stated that: "and for the board being broken. It's not structural that's usually where the. Painting comes in if it were mine or if I was doing it, I would take some wood filler fill it let it dry, sand it and paint it. And you would never know it was there." This statement was especially confusing to me at the point where he said 'if it were mine or if I was doing it'. I don't understand why I wasn't contacted when it became clear there were damages to the board. I also don't understand why, if his personal solution would be to use wood filler and sand it, he didn't do that or ask me if he could do that. 5. Bottom boards of structure not secured properly- In two of the photos, you can see that the boards that touch the concrete next to the door can be moved freely. He had initially secured one down with glue. The other had nothing to hold it in place except for the leveler he used. When I texted him asking about this, Nick stated: "Well, as far as the pieces that are next to the doorway, I had glue under I meant to mention to you not to go in there or use it because once you move it then it won't dry in place so that being said it's not an issue for me to come back and re-glue it." I let him know that I didn't agree that glue was the best material to use for this portion of the project and asked if there was a better way to secure those boards. This concern was never addressed in any follow-up texts. 6. Promises to follow up with concerns, didn't return to uphold this promise- I've attached the entire text conversation from the time Nick completed the project (November 17th) to when he said he would arrive (November 20th) and fix the concerns I brought to him. On the 17th, he promised he'd be by before Friday (20th). There was no further attempt to reach me throughout the week. Despite receiving a text from him the morning of the 20th, Nick never showed up. At this point, I made it clear to him that I was unsatisfied with both the quality of the work and his inability to follow through. I asked him not to return, as I no longer trusted that he could do the work. All of this to say, I paid far too much for such poor work. My family and I are going to have to go back and redo much of his work, including the screen netting (Several spots where the netting is overlapping and looks odd), the posts used to support the netting, filing down the nails/screws, cleaning my yard, using wood filler to repair the column board, and reattaching the gutter. It's incredibly disappointing because, with it being so close to the holidays, my family and I would much rather have been able to focus our time and money on celebrating with each other. I give Nick credit for communicating well for the majority of the project and repairing the most pressing concerns (major repairs to water-damaged boards near the roof). He did complete the project, though the quality of his work left much to be desired. Update: Nick got back to me after I made it clear I was unhappy with the work. His response was to deflect responsibility, ignore concerns, and swear at me. Also added the part of the conversation where he "told me the materials were trash". 11/21: Dumped the concrete leveler in my trash can. The entire bottom is solid concrete. But hey, it's the materials fault right? read more

I had a huge tree branch fall on my roof on a Tuesday evening. It took landed on my shed, part of my roof, and took down a privacy wall that held backyard lights. Nick came Thursday, looked at the job, quoted a fair price and fixed it within 2 1/2 hours. He chopped up the tree and leaves, repaired the wall, rehung the lights, cleaned up the yard, and got rid of the debris. It doesn't even look like the branch fell at all. The job was quoted one price and when the owner got to the site he stated he needed more money. The money was given because he stated he needed to hire extra workers and equipment. The job went on for weeks with the owner not showing up when he stated he would and without updates for long periods of time. Once the job was half way completed the owner abandoned the job entirely. My neighbor reported hearing him state he underbid the job. In the end he got me into a feud with my neighbor because their fence was removed and not placed back properly. He also damaged a lot of their fence without fixing it. He also left debris in their yard which I hand to go pick up so they wouldn't charge me for clean up. He left my fence in a wreck with an entire section missing which somehow disappeared altogether and I have to get rebuilt now. I actually have to get about half of the fence rebuilt because of the damage done when it was removed because it won't stand up, we have 2 x4's holding the fence up. I had to hire another company to finish picking up the tree, debris, and trash left on my property. Oh he knocked out and damaged my cable box by the street bringing the rented equipment onto my property. This was a disaster and ended up costing me more in damages than the job itself. I wish I could have received every penny I paid but once he abandoned the job he stopped responding altogether and denied refunds. I tried not to take the bad reviews of this owner as an overall critique of his work but they are extremely accurate. He's unprofessional and should not be paid until job is fully complete otherwise he'll run off with the money and the job not complete. He needs to be removed from the Yelp guarantee because he's a liability otherwise they will keep having to compensate his jobs. read more

Editing after the vendor responded with how many favorable reviews he has that don't match mine. And also alleging I'm not being truthful. Of course he would say something to try to defend the indefensible but that's not possible. There are quite a few negative reviews, mine is not standing alone. I submitted the contract and pictures of the mess he left my yard in to YELP, and they reimbursed me based on his Shoddy work. Not sure how he can refute that. Initial review: The very worst experience I have ever had with a contractor. He represented himself to be a landscaper who had a lot of experience with the type of job I requested. Fortunately this job was covered by Yelp's guarantee or I would have been screwed. I needed grading and sod along the side of my home and Nick assured me he had experience in doing this. He agreed to do the work and charged me $700 to do grading project at the full side of my home, 40'. This involved digging down to add a layer of rocks for water drainage, and then top with lawn soil and sod. I paid $400 in advance even though I tried to pay only $350, which is the usual. He never sent a contract for the work, so I am glad I insisted on one. The contract specified him to dig down 4-5 inches. The base layer would be two inches of rock for drainage. On top of the rocks, lay 3 inches of lawn soil, not fill dirt. Then lay the fescue sod. I told him to make certain the irrigation heads weren't covered up. He told me the job would take 1 1/2 days. After about three hours work he said he needed to leave. I could tell he wasn't done because there was a lot of area that wasn't covered with sod, but dirt. He was rolling up the sod I had paid for, to put in his truck. I asked him to come back the next day but he said he couldn't because his wife was in the hospital having a baby, he was talking to his mother on the phone while he was cleaning up. I told him he wasn't done with the contract, there was rock at the top of the lawn that was supposed to be buried 3 inches deep, and clumps of dirt in the established grass in my yard and my neighbor's yard. He left a large amount of the rocks on the grass, which could wreak havoc on my Lawn Care company equipment. I had to search for the irrigation heads, which were covered up with sod, cut the sod from around them. He THREATENED to tear up all the work he had done, despite my paying for the materials. I had no choice to pay him but filed a claim with Yelp right after. Fortunately I made him sign a contract, took a lot of pictures to show his shoddy work, and they reimbursed me for his screwup. After he left, I measured how far he dug to lay the rocks, which was to be the base. The three samples I measured showed he dug down from only 1 1/2 " a max of 3", then an inch of rock, then two inches of soil. Fortunately, I found someone else to do the work quickly on Nextdoor. BEWARE using this man for other than routine yardwork. He doesn't have a CLUE what he is doing. read more

Highly Recommend!!! We bought a home built in 1925 with extensive drywall repair needed. Nick's cost estimate was reasonable and he does more than what is on the scope of work to make sure the finish product looks nice. Since he did such great work on the drywall we also had him do a custom renovation on our fireplace. This fireplace was as old as the house (1925) and the wood was falling apart from termite damage. Nick repurposed the front of original fireplace mantle to keep the old Victorian woodwork. Then he was able to rebuild the entire frame for the mantle front of the fireplace so that we could mount our flat screen TV. I requested Nick to come and weedeat my yard. We agreed to come Monday night but couldn't make it. No big deal. He came Tuesday morning. We agreed to $80 for just a weed trim. We are staging the house to sell, so beggars can't be choosers given that my weedeater died over the weekend. I mowed the lawn, so I just needed the edging done. I come home to work to the pictures attached. Complete lack of attention to detail. He claimed that he wasn't specifically told to trim the sidewalk, so he didn't. I do not know who Nick thinks is responsible for trimming the sidewalk, but beware, he won't trim it unless you specifically ask him to do so. He also didn't come prepared. He had to use some of my weedeater trimming line to do the job and still charged me full price. He asked my wife, who was home with our kids, if he could use my trimmer line. He took advantage of me not being home and I paid him because I took him at his word that the job was done. His word is not worth much. I can't state it more plainly, I do not recommend this guy. No attention to detail, overpriced, and doesn't manage his time well. I would put 0 stars if it was an option. I requested a refund given that my inspection of his work shows that he didn't do ANYTHING. I did not get a refund. He will charge you too much for work he won't do. When I contacted him about the quality of work, he admitted that his price was increased due to the timing of my request, meaning he understood the urgency. His price is simply him taking advantage of the situation and the quality of his work does not at all reflect his pricing. Total rip off. Edit: his response below claims the sidewalk is city property. I don't know of anyone that works for Virginia Beach that comes around mowing the sidewalks. I wonder why? Oh, that's because it's the homeowner's responsibility to cut that, meaning it should be implied that it is included in the work order request. Additionally, he still didn't do any level of respectable work on the fence line, around the house, near the flower beds, etc. included the Virginia Beach municipality code 23-50b that states the sidewalk and curb belong to the homeowner. So, Nick is wrong again. He also claims he will come by today to fix it. He has yet to confirm a time that he is coming. Edit #2: he did not come to fix this at all, despite his reply claiming he would. Virginia Beach Municipal Code section 23-50b "(b) Except as provided in subsections (e) and (f) hereof, upon determination by the director of housing and neighborhood preservation, the code enforcement administrator, or any inspector of the department of housing and neighborhood preservation, whether temporarily or permanently employed as such, that there exists on any land or premises within the city, including the area between such land or premises and the nearer of (i) the curb line, including a sidewalk if one is present, (ii) a sound wall, or (iii) the edge of the pavement of any public street abutting such property in the absence of a curb or sound wall, any grass, weeds, brush or similar vegetation in excess of ten (10) inches in height, notice shall be served on the owner of such land or premises or his or her agent, or on the occupant thereof, or both, to cause such grass, weeds, brush or similar vegetation to be cut and removed from such land or premises within seven (7) days from the date of such notice." read more

Initially working with Nick was great. He was patient and flexible as the start date of the project was pushed back due to errors in my own understanding and scheduling. He helped me to understand the scope of work that needed to be done and the amount of time it would take to get done. He worked around my schedule even offering to show up on a Sunday. I scheduled four appointments with them and received various excuses as to why they didn't show up. Nicklas apologized and promised to be here at 3:00pm on 9 June 2023. At 5:00 I texted him he still had not showed up. I texted him and told him to delete my information out of his phone as I was a very dissatisfied customer and would never do business with him. In selling our home the buyer requested some rotted wood on a door frame to be replaced. I had two quotes from other contractors in the $700-$1200 range to replace the entire frame with about two days work time and project start a week later - Nick did it the day of within 3 hours without having to replace the frame for $260. Barn door installation with problems. It is not a good idea to yell at customers. Photos attached. Also, sink food garbage disposal broke and Nick installed new one. Except I had a flood because he did not attach dishwasher hose. After fixing that, however, next day dishwasher did not empty and leaked water because he forgot to remove the drain plug. I had to pay $100 to home warranty (have receipt) to come and remove plug to fix dishwasher. Nick must refund me $100 sine he was paid $250 for installing new insinkerator. I had to pay twice to fix his mistake. Land and Home Repair is not a licensed A or B or C class contractor. No license at all. read more
