The crust was thick and rigid rather than crisp, the pastry was noticeably dry, and it lacked the buttery richness and delicate layers I was expecting. There are many factors during lamination, proofing, and baking that can influence the final result, but this croissant simply didn't deliver the texture or flavour I associate with an exceptional one. Perhaps my expectations are high. I grew up with a neighbour from Paris who regularly made croissants from scratch, and those set a lasting benchmark for me.
