    Seared foie gras
    Daniel B.

This restaurant has been open for over 30 years, but despite living in Montreal, last Saturday was my first visit. It's not much to look at from outside on Crescent street just below Sherbrooke. Once inside however, you are essentially entering what was once a Victorian living room and home. The vibe is very warm and relaxing with live classical/jazz piano and white table cloths. The bar and dining rooms are scattered with dressed up patrons who look like they know on which side of the plate one places a soup spoon. Once seated with a drink, the upscale atmosphere and soft music transport you to a bygone era of fancy restaurants. The food was very good, albeit the portions are far from gigantic. In fairness, the prices are reasonable. I started with a nice piece of seared foie gras served with a sweet reduction and some peach. Their rack of lamb was incredibly good. Tasting of rich dijon mustard and garlic, this lamb gives Gibby's a run for their money. Then again, the portion is about 60% smaller. Regardless, for those of you who are into reasonable portions of food, you won't have any complaints. (I eat one meal a day). For my father-in-law's birthday, they made us a delicious chocolate truffle cake which was served with happy birthday music from the piano player. The end of the evening turned into a karaoke-like sing along with several diners joining the piano player and singing tunes like Frank Sinatra's My Way. It was a really fun experience which I'd go for again in a heartbeat.

I wanted to go to a great French restaurant while in Montreal and this recommendation from a friend who had been here before did not disappoint! Aside from having my all time favorite wine on their wine list, the food was unbelievable. Do not sleep on the escargot! It was probably my favorite dish in all of Montreal! Two of my friends who were weary of trying it also said it was their favorite part of the meal! The owner was also very sweet! When we said that we would be sharing different entrees in order to taste different dishes, he had the chef plate our dishes with portions of the different entrees so we didn't have to worry about sharing at the table! The lamb chops were definitely a favorite, but there wasn't anything that we had that we wouldn't try again!

It's a bit upmarket but boy, it was worth it. I felt a little bit under-dressed when we arrived, even though I was wearing an actual shirt. However despite not having a reservation, we were welcomed and swiftly guided to a table in the crowded dining room beside a couple of guys in jeans and T-shirts, so I stopped fretting and settled down to enjoy my cocktail aperitif. A delightful Margarita it was too. The noise level from the other diners was quite loud making conversation difficult, and it was clear that our fellow diners were rather more advanced in their alcohol consumption, but we did our best to catch up with a lovely bottle of white wine from their extensive list. As I'm not all that familiar with the local wineries, I asked our waiter for a recommendation. Somewhat surprisingly he suggested an Italian white, but it did turn out to be delicious. The starter of asparagus arrived in a very practical rectangular dish and contained some of the largest and most succulent asparagus shoots that I've ever tasted. Just yummy. We followed that with pan-roasted Digby scallops with Morel mushrooms, spinach purée and mashed potatoes. These again were just perfection, practically melting on the palate. Heaven. It wasn't cheap, but the standard of food and the quality of the wine list certainly makes this place worth it for that special treat, and the period decor makes for a lovely romantic atmosphere.

I have to say the food here is excellent. The server who who is owner I believe is a bit rude, that's the only reason I didn't give this a 5 star. I did enjoy the food and I've been here a few times so I guess it's not limiting me going back. I just don't know what it is about him that he seems like a pretentious old man. However they have meals that taste like home cooked french, they are extremely well presented and it seems like they individually cook for each table so I can't say a bad thing about any of the dishes.

We were greeted by a friendly maître d' and seated in a spacious dining room where several other tables were already full of diners. Our server was excellent and made recommendations when we asked. Each dish was timed perfectly, and we never felt rushed. Each was prepared perfectly and we would easily order them again. We ordered the Rabbit Confit in a Phyllo Dough in Red Wine Sauce; Mixed Green Salad with Balsamic Dressing, Pine Nuts and Shaved Parmesan; Bœuf à la bourguignonne; and a fruit tarte with ice cream. Server was nice even though at some point he was just standing there and we were waiting for him to come back to order dessert to the point where u actually had to call him but this was nothing truly. Lamb with sweet garlic sauce Filet mignon with five peppercorn and cognac sauce Key lime pie The meat was great, truly. The sauces? a total disgrace / turn off considering the price of each plate. Sweet garlic, had nothing I could say I feel the garlic in at all. Flavorless. Five pepercorn with cognac non existent ! The only time i taste the peppercorn was if I BIT the actual peppercorn. The dessert ? I ate 2 bites and left the entire thing. The "crust" was nowhere to be found it was watered down carton... and the lime layer felt like I was biting into fake jelly. I have nothing else to say but you can decide how you spend your money. The "fancy" restaurant leaves a lot to desire.

Our waitresses recommendations were fire. We enjoyed: Complementary bread: it was soft on inside and appropriately crunchy but not overly so on the outside. Plus two huge pieces cut into 4 pieces individually. Beef tartare: at 20 cad it was a little pricy for how much you got but the taste was great and I'm a fan of comte cheese. Plus it didn't have capers which imo overwhelms tartares. Duck with carrot: as a Chinese person I've had my share of duck but this might be the best duck I've ever had in my life. The texture and cook on it was awesome! First it came with three pieces of breast. It was the perfect cook, not over like most of the places I've had duck. Then the leg had the perfect crispy fatty skin to meat ratio. Yum yum this is a can't miss dish here Burger: husband got this. I took a bite. It had a nice smoke to it and was perfectly medium rare. I was too distracted by my duck to analyze it further. Raspberry jelly for dessert: as the waitress had mentioned, it was light and a perfect sweet but tart bite. Was great! BEST "BYOB" FRENCH BISTRO DURING RECENT TRIP…read more This is the best dining experience in our recent Montreal trip. I'm glad we made reservation since the place was quite packed when we arrived. To be honest, our first impression wasn't too great. We were seated in their main indoor dining area which was a bit too warm. We asked if we can be moved to their fully covered / heated patio area, but unfortunately the restaurant was full. Fast forward 15 minutes, we have placed our order and were enjoying our bottle of wine and a basket of bread. Our server came over and offered to move us to the patio area since a table had opened up. We were pleasantly surprised because (1) we didn't ask again and (2) most restaurants wouldn't change tables once customers started eating/drinking. The restaurant setting is unpretentious with a casual and cozy vibes. The staff are so friendly that we feel like having a family dinner! They offer a pre-fixe menu in which we thoroughly enjoyed! For appetizers, the escargot dish gave us a pleasant surprise. They wrapped the escargots and blue cheese sauce in a thin crispy crust! It's hard to describe, but it's sort of like having an escargot "crepe"! The few main courses we chose were excellent, and the rack of lamb was probably our favorite - tender, juicy, and perfectly cooked. As for dessert, their creme brulee was one of the best I've had - creamy custard topped with a perfect, crisp caramel top. I'd highly recommend this place, and will certainly visit again when I'm in town next time!
