This was…read moresomewhat impromptu, as I did not read up on this place in preparation for my trip - instead, I did some quick research the night before and found that it consistently ranked as one of the best breakfast/brunch spots in the city. That being said, I booked a table and we made our way over. Régine is apparently a popular spot - indicated by the rope they had set up outside which suggested that a line can form. Since we booked a table, and it was a Monday morning, there was no line and we were seated right away. The restaurant is broken up into two main dining areas with large windows that let in a lot of light. The decor was tasteful but not my style - it definitely gave off that afternoon tea feel with upscale accents and an overly feminine aesthetic. It was nice but just not my taste. The menu has a really good variety of breakfast and lunch items - I was taken aback by how many creative dishes there were, not just standard breakfast items. I needed caffeine, so I started with a cappuccino which was really good, one of the better ones I've had. For my actual breakfast I went with the Chic Croissant; this was essentially a breakfast sandwich with pulled ham, egg, arugula, and an aioli. Due to the fragility of the croissant, I did not eat it as a sandwich - but despite that the dish was delicious. Everything tasted super fresh and all the flavors worked really well together. I don't think I ever had pulled ham before, but felt it was super creative and elevated the sandwich. We wanted to try some of their bakes, so we also got the cinnamon roll and the scone. We were given the option to have the cinnamon roll covered in frosting but we opted to have it plain. Even without the frosting, the roll was excellent - I usually find cinnamon rolls to be dry, but this was super m-o-i-s-t with a generous filling of raisins and cinnamon; it was one of the best I've had. The scone was lavender and white chocolate; I don't usually like lavender but this was pretty good and not overly heavy. It came with sides of macerated strawberries and mascarpone which I don't think were needed but nice to have. Service was great - everyone was warm, friendly, and efficient. Overall, Régine Café exceeded my expectations - the food was excellent and I wouldn't hesitate to return for another meal. I understand why this is one of the more popular spots for breakfast and brunch in Montreal.

The hollandaise sauce was on point, and there were indeed plenty of meats to love. The ambiance was also great, with brickwork in the modern industrial renovation style that places have, in an open, airy space. I'd describe it as "jaunty fun". The service was great. We were able to get a table promptly, and the wait staff were an appropriate amount of attentive without being pushy. No issues or complains here.

They could have easily moved a table of patrons into one of the available booths (or nearby table) to accommodate us... but for some reason they made us wait 20+ minutes while other patrons that came in groups of 2 and 4 got to immediately sit down... at times the groups of 2 sat down in tables of 4. Not very efficient!!! I'm sure if you nicely asked patrons to move to a booth from a table, they'd take that one, especially with some TLC and incentives. The waitress was attentive, she repeated our order to ensure it was correct. She refilled our coffees and water with us having to ask though it was busy in the restaurant. Everything was served quickly, and presentation was fantastic. Coffee that came with the plates was smooth and easy to drink (medium roast). There are a few differences compared to the one in Mont-Royal. This one is larger, with a bit more climate/temperature control, and some booths for more comfortable seating when available. The decor is different. You have a different motorcycle on one wall, an elevated shelf of really cool reel-to-reel tape recorders, and a different style of rest room decor. Service and food was slightly different. Earlier this week at the Mont-Royal restaurant, I raved that hot tea came out as steeped leaves. Here, the same type of tea was steeped from traditional tea bags. Also, not all of my breakfast came at the same time. The server promised that the rest would come out "in seconds." After about 300 of those, I let my waiter know I was still missing parts, and he brought them out immediately. None of this is enough to subtract a star. As I mentioned earlier, I hope to get to more of the L'Avenus's, but it's so difficult not to go back to the ones I have already visited and liked.
