After several weeks of trying to get a reservation at this Richmond hot spot, my fiancé and I were able to secure a seat for two at the bar for a Saturday evening. Of course I'm thinking, "This better be worth sitting elbow to elbow at a bar for some French food." Upon our arrival, we opened the front door, pulled back a heavily draped curtain, and were punched in the face with the coolest, quirkiest, most thoroughly enjoyable experience I've ever had at a Richmond eatery! If Lestat de Lioncourt had a favorite place to grub this would be it. As you enter, the dark mysterious interior is dotted with weird and fantastic artwork, sculpture, and stained glass. The gallery is full of clown portraiture that would make Pennywise proud. And keep an eye out for the little stuffed possum with the bespoke top hat--he's nestled next to the Nick Cave vignette. As we gleefully make our way to the bar area we're greeted with a nice and spacious corner seat--no elbow rubbing here, it's perfectly roomy. We take our seats and the eclectic sounds of French pop and 80's classics swirl around the air, putting a wax seal on the ambiance. After only a few seconds we're greeted by Beth, a wonderfully energetic, and convivial guide through this dense atmosphere of art, music, and décor. She playfully inquires about our experience at L'Opossum, and we tell her we're virgins to the place (she promises a wonderful time). After some introductory banter we order a few cocktails; the Sherry Baby and the Laura Palmer. Both cocktails are smoky, tart, delicious, and heralding a great evening. As our drinks are consumed we order several appetizers; the escargots with mini ham biscuits, and the radicchio salad topped with goat cheese. Incroyable! The little escargots are salty and savory and buttery, and the mini ham biscuits are flaky and melty and divine. The radicchio salad is beautifully balanced with bright tart acidity and creamy goat goodness, and the texture is crunchy and crisp. You know what's up when the salad is elevated, right?! Absolutely delicious! Upon the appetizers being consumed we decide to really put our foot on the gas and indulge the hell out of ourselves. And under the approving sinful eye of Beth, we order the Swank Bank (lobster mac), the Beef Swellington (filet mignon), and the scallops with pork belly. I don't know what the French word for HOLY **** is, but my goodness, the food was soooo over the top great! The lobster mac was gooey, silky, and full of lobster meat and flavor. The filet was perfectly seared and was buttery tender. The scallops and pork belly were a fantastic salty duo playing on top of a bed of decadent cheddar grits. Etonnant! At the bitter end of this holy entrée course, we offer up our souls to gluttony and order the Chocolat en Flambe and the Lavender-Limoncello Creme Brulee. The desserts are delivered to us by Virgil (aka Beth), our guide through Dante's infernal decadence tour. Beth lights the chocolat en flambe with rum 151 in a way I can only describe as a Puritan gleefully lighting a witch on fire--it's dramatic, fun, and a frenzy for the senses. As for the desserts themselves, wow! Now beware, the chocolat is dense and powerful. You have to be a true worshiper of cacao to even begin this ritual of chocolate--it's that intense and orgasmic. The lavender-limoncello brulee is exceptional! The creme is light and delicate, and the hints of herb and citrus hit the right subtle notes--it's a wonderfully deft brulee! By the end of this journey through space and time, we ended up spending about $450 for 4 cocktails, 1 medium priced bottle of wine, 2 apps, 3 entrees, and 2 desserts. Certainly not a pedestrian order, but you get the picture--it's expensive. BUT, the food is plentiful, so you're not being scammed by small plates. Here's the deal...this place is worth your time and money. The atmosphere is a feast for the eyes and ears, and the service is impeccably genuine and professional. After eating at this quirky, whacky, alternate dark dimension of culinary tricks and treats I felt like I needed church. It's arguably THE most wonderful trip for your five senses in Richmond. I absolutely love this place! I am a New Yorker and don't expect to find great food elsewhere in the country, but places like this remind me not to be such a snob. The atmosphere is refined, yet whimsical, with a combination of class and kitsch (which is how I like to describe my own apartment). The seating is comfortable, the tables well spaced, and the sound (and music choices) are just right. The room is elegant, but in place of stodgier choices like conventional chandeliers or artwork, the ceiling is peppered with 1960s lucite spaghetti lamps, and the walls covered with well-curated thrift-store style art. The menu is creative, with each dish incorporating a wonderful variety of flavors, textures, and temperatures, and listening to our server (Susan) talk about the food was a prominent part of the experience, as she lovingly described each of the dishes, answered all of our questions, and made recommendations based on our dietary restrictions. We started with the house cocktail before moving onto a wonderful mixed green salad with Campari granita and the Vegan Orgy on the Beach, and then my partner had a Filet Mignon and I the Truffled Mac 'n Cheese (without the lobster). Finally, we finished by sharing the Death By Chocolate flambé, all of which were delicious. In addition to our waitress, all of the other staff were extremely attentive, even making sure to wait while my partner was in the bathroom to "finish off" the filet mignon with a port wine reduction. The only complaint I had was the sour-pussed host who seemed somehow put out by the notion of doing his job. Walked in this restaurant and was rudely greeted by the hostess ( Summer) . We came from an Uber with 2 cans that needed thrown away. They were rudely grabbed from us and told that we not going to be able to be served alcohol. Will ,the manager, told us we were going to be unable to be served alcohol. None out of the 4 of us were intoxicated. He informed us that we could stay for dinner but would not be served alcohol. No explanation was given. We tried L'oppossum for the first time last night and it won't be the last! Cool and unpretentious with terrific food and cocktails. We had the escargot and French onion soup dip to start - don't miss the escargot! It was tender and delicious and accompanied by a ham biscuit which was out of this world. We had the beef sWellington and are still thinking about how delicious it was. I never order dessert but could not resist another opportunity to be dazzled by the chef. After my visit last Wednesday, I meant to jump right in and write my review but as I'm sure most of us do, I procrastinated until...... I see that not only was L'Opossum named best restaurant yesterday (at the Elby Awards), but also David Shannon was named chef of the year! Congratulations to the team at this fine establishment! A year ago, we walked in early on a weeknight and although the space seemed empty, we were told that without a reservation, we could take a place at the bar if we'd like. We didn't thinking some of the initial hype would die down. But to no avail. It seemed reservations were becoming harder to get rather than easier so we tried again... to sit at the bar! Will, our bartender and host for the evening, made the evening enjoyable, like hanging out with a friend. The cocktails are unique (loved the Honeybadger) and when I was uncertain about which wine by the glass would go best with my entree, I was offered more than one to try. Yup, found the perfect one! Schweety and I shared the veal loin small plate to start. Tiny, but so well plated and full of amazing flavors. Hints of a Nicoice salad yet so much more. For entrees I had the filet mignon of beef "swellington" which was topped with a tiny puff pastry pouch with a "secret" inside and hubby's Darth Grouper was also a hit. I love this place. I had been circling this restaurant for some time. From its location, name, and exterior look, I was interested. Then I read the reviews. From these, I felt they had a lot to live up to. They didn't disappoint. I walked up at opening time and I had no reservation. The maître'sd was super polite and respectful and said they were booked for the night. I said I was alone and would sit anywhere. He looked at his schedule and said I could maybe sit for a drink and an app. I said, "cool." He checked with the manager and sat me at the bar. It was partitioned and felt safe. I was immediately greeted by Will, the bartender. He was friendly but dignified and mature. We engaged in banter and from that, Will decided I could go ahead and order an entrée. I asked for recommendations. He gave me two and I went for them. It was an appetizer called "Faberge Egg". And for the entrée, I took the filet. I ordered an old-fashioned after discussing with Will how he made it. Larceny was the rail whisky and he didn't muddle the fruit. Excellent. The egg was incredible. The fillet was perfect. It was called a "Swellington" because it was topped with a puff pastry filled with foie gras. Amazing. I asked Will for a recommendation for a wine pairing and he let me taste of two choices. I picked the Syrah over the cabernet sauvignon. It was the right choice. This meal was epic and Will tried to tempt me with dessert (an eggnog concoction), but unfortunately, I couldn't stay. Overall, the food and drinks were on point. But the service was what was remarkable. The host was so accommodating and chill. Will reminded me of those awesome New York bartender/servers who love and care about what they do. This was an experience I will remember and I will recommend to all my friends. Terrible service and I never even got in the door. I had a reservation with my husband and friend on Saturday night. On our way to dinner we had to turn around and come home because my friend was all of the sudden feeling ill. As soon as we stepped out of the car she started vomiting and it turns out had a stomach virus. I called the restaurant immediately and explained the situation and they said a manager would call back. Not only did they not call back but they slapped a $75 fee on my credit card. I asked how they would know who was next and how to call for us when it was our turn to be seated? She said just stay in the entry area. I explained that we wanted to get fresh air rather than keep stepping aside while people come and go, she said we couldn't step outside or we would lose our place on the waitlist. Within 20 minutes we were seated and the rest of the evening was pleasant. I suggest they work on the hostess routine. read more

Food is consistent and tasty. I sat at the bar and ate my dinner, the last couple of times. The drinks are strong and tasty, bar staff friendly and courteous. This review is for my last visit in April, I ordered the Pork Belly and Scallops dish for my entree. The food was really tasty, and I enjoyed every last morsel. The bartender made a couple of excellent Kentucky Mules; I tell you, this man is an artist! Two very negative experiences drove me to write this review. 1. My only experience actually dining at L'Opossum, my boyfriend ordered the crabcakes and got terrible food poisoning. 2. The food poisoning was about a year before so I decided to try dining at L'Opossom again for a special occasion. We had reservations but running behind so my friend with the reservation called to update the staff, they said that was fine but our table still had a 2-hour time limit. We arrived and immediately forced out of the completely empty restaurant. Two days later my friend with the reservation was charged a $150 no show fee, without explanation. read more

Hands down, one of the best meals I've had in Richmond. I've learned a long time ago that I must not judge a restaurant from the exterior, especially in Richmond. L'Opossum sits on the corner of a modest street in a modest neighborhood. The food and experience however is quite elevated. With walls filled with art, tables decorated with gold and mint infused water, I felt quite lavish. My party ordered the escargot as an appetizer. The portion size is made for one hungry individual or split amongst two who just want a taste. The snails were quite meaty and absolutely delicious. I ordered a crab festooned NY strip. The steak was cooked perfectly medium rare as requested. I also tasted the lamb. I'm not a fan of gamey meats, but upon my next visit, this would be my dish of choice. The lamb literally, will melt in your mouth. The sauce was so flavorful. I'm not sure what it was made of but I would like that poured on every single meal from here on out. Ok, yall. Kristine B.'s review basically covers everything you ever needed to know about L'Opossum. But I'll still add my 2 cents worth... These were easily the best crab cakes I've ever had in my life. I was totally NOT expecting that. But it was lovely! I devoured it. The menu says "All Crab. All the time" and they were right. These succulent lumps of crab will melt in your mouth and make you feel like the happiest girl in the world. Orrrr maybe that was just me? Before I sank my teeth into those crabby cakes, I ordered the grilled caesar salad without anchovies. I'm usually not into these alternative hipster grilled lettuce salads, but it was so good! I actually enjoyed the smoky flavor. The lettuce was wilted, but nowhere near mushy or unpleasant. I ordered a drink with my meal as well. The French Tickler. It almost had me on the floor, yall! These drinks may be small but they pack a lot of punch. This is another location in the books for Richmond's growing craft cocktail scene. I would give L'Opossum a 10 if I could. It quickly became one of the best restaurants in Richmond for me. Only downside? Service was rather slow. I get the feeling that the culture of this restaurant is literally come and stay a while. Great meal at a comfortable price. Celebrated my (vegan) friend's birthday here. Cocktails were delicious especially the one with a strawberry balsamic puree. Appetizers perfectly seasoned and entrees were tasty. My friend had one vegan option for an appetizer and one as an entree. She raved about the appetizer and decided she would try beets again after tasting the beets in the vegan Big Mac entree! Everything was beautifully presented and to top it all off our waitress was so knowledgeable. The staff was very warm and friendly. C'est magnifique! I have been hearing about this place for a while but have not been able to convince DH to venture out to Oregon Hill. But an old friend was in town for a visit so this was the perfect time to try out L'Opossum. If I had to describe it, I guess I would call it funky French. Small, intimate, lush, and charming, especially the taxidermy albino opossum at the bar. The menu has lots of creative and interesting choices. I had a tough time deciding on what I wanted to try. For my starter, I had the Grilled Cesaer, which was pretty spectacular. A halved heart of romaine, grilled and topped with all the goodies you would expect, including just the right amount of a wonderful dressing. For my dinner, I could not decide between the sweetbreads/lobster combo or the beef "Swellington". I decided that sweetbreads were such a rare treat to find, that I had to get that dish. It blew me away. The sweetbreads were gently pan-fried with a slight crust, the lobster had just the right texture, and that sauce! It came with a side of lavender-infused grits, which were a great accompaniment for the sauce as well. I was too wrapped up in my dinner to pay much attention to what BFF was eating. But I believe she had the salmon and enjoyed it very much. For dessert (or deezert as the menu calls it), BFF and I split the lavender-limoncello creme brûlée. Perfect crust, perfect taste. Worth every high calorie bite. I was also impressed with the terrific level of service we enjoyed. Attentive and helpful throughout. So my husband and I went here for our first anniversary dinner. I have been wanting to try this place for like 3 years but never had the opportunity. We had a reservation for 7 and were seated promptly. We quickly ordered a drink for me and our entrees (Moroccan chicken and the crab cakes). The drink was good but we had to wait over an hour for our food to arrive. When it did I have to admit I was sorely let down. Was the food bad, no. But was it anything to write home about... no. Honestly my mom makes a better crab cake and it doesn't cost me $34. My husband is Moroccan and aside from the chicken being presented in a tagine he said nothing was reminiscent of Moroccan cuisine so I'm not sure why they don't just call it chicken? We both left feeling very underwhelmed and honestly upset at how much we paid for lackluster food and service. Will not be coming back anytime soon. read more

My mom and I had a terrific all-around experience here for dinner last night. I had bookmarked the restaurant after reading some really great reviews from credible Yelpers and had the perfect opportunity to go with Mom last night. I was easily able to make rezzies from their website the night before. We showed up a little before the time I signed up for and were still seated immediately. As we entered, we were both immediately impressed with the interior. Dark, but charming and a little bit quirky. Additionally, both the hostess and server were friendly and knowledgeable. We split the Polyamorous Hippie Three-Way appetizer, which was a good choice. Crispy tabouleh paired with an interesting combo of flavors and textures with a black-eyed stew hummus and stewed "tomatoganoush". Everything came together beautifully. And it was just the right amount to save room for the entrees. I ordered the COQ au Morocco and Mom ordered the Big-Ass Lamb shank and we split the two. I was the biggest fan of my dish, but both were delicious. The chicken in the COQ was the most flavorful and tender chicken I think I've tasted. Absolutely incredible. Mom's lamb was also fall-off-the-bone tender and the cranberry-orange relish gave a nice sweet contrast to the richness of the lamb. The cocktail, wine and beer lists were all interesting. Since I had to drive back to W-burg later I stuck to one cocktail- the French Tickler- and as with everything else we had it was on point! Best dining experience in Richmond. I cannot say enough about the positive experience we had here. The atmosphere is incredibly quirky. There is a surplus of Star Wars and other unique wall decor surrounding the small dining space. The lighting was low and calming, and the music set the mood for a relaxing evening meal. However, the food was anything but terrible; it was in fact delectable. We got four different entrees (crab cakes, swank bank - lobster mac'n'cheese, the filet, and the scallops, and were thoroughly impressed by all. I was hesitant about ordering the filet in fear of feeling as though I was coping out on trying other unique menu items, but thank God we stuck to our guns and got it because it was truly the best filet I have ever had (and trust me, I've had my fair share). The crab cakes were good, honestly nothing spectacular about them but they didn't disappoint. The scallops were coated in cocoa and was possibly the most unique dish I've tasted. If you're not a fan of a hint of chocolate, steer clear; but if you're open to trying a dish that could blow your mind, definitely give this one a shot! Finally the lobster mac'n'cheese was the perfect combination of rich and cheesy. To top it all off we got the chocolate flambé. I've always wanted to try this restaurant because of the outstanding reviews, however, I was disappointed last night. When we sat down, our server refused to tell my friend what the best dish on the menu was. When I repeated the same question ten min later, he abruptly cut me off and rudely said "can I first take your drink orders? And then I'll go over the menu." I was shocked at his tone of voice and his apparent lack of manners. When he did finally go over the menu, he elaborately explained five dishes for ten minutes making the entire situation very awkward. We asked him to pick ONE dish that was most popular and he refused to answer that and went on a tangent. We ordered the Halibut and the Moroccan chicken. The chicken was fantastic, but the halibut was mediocre at best (the server raved about the fish). The halibut was not seasoned well and had an awful crunch when chewing that tasted awfully like sand. We could not eat the halibut at all. The way the waiter treated us completely ruined our experience at L'Opposum and it was quite embarrassing when I told my out of town friends how this place was amazing due to the reviews and they were very disappointed. When I go to a fancy restaurant, I expect the servers to treat me well and make me feel comfortable, but that certain was not the case in this situation. Wonderful food, wonderful service, wonderful funky atmosphere. We loved everything about this place and ate a ton. Two of us shared 3 appetizers, 2 entrees, 3 desserts, and we took and another appetizer and dessert to go. If I lived nearby I would literally start at the top and work my down each item on the menu over the course of time. If you can get a table - this place is awesome! read more

Save your money, four us visited for dinner. All of us were disappointed, 3 of us had filet minion, our medium rare steaks were average at best and over cooked. Suppose to have foie gras, and we couldn't see where it did. Wine selections are way over priced. For $400 we spent, it was not worth it. Had high hopes as Richmond has great restaurants. read more

Do: order the beef "swellington." It was perfectly cooked and really flavorful-- absolutely delicious. Don't: order the sweetbreads & shrimp. Maybe I should have realized from the menu that the ingredients were incongruous, and that there was a reason why the waiter didn't list it when I asked for recommendations. I thought this dish would make sense when it was served. It didn't. The sweetbreads were fine but not noteworthy; the shrimp was pretty tasty but the grits were bland; the romanesco was fine but also random; and I'm not sure how it was all supposed to go together. I've had much better shrimp and grits dishes at other restaurants. We had the escargot and venison to start-- the escargot were really tasty. The venison was interesting but it was so floral I couldn't really taste the meat at all. Most of our meal was good, I just had high expectations based on how hard it was to get a reservation here, and I was really disappointed by my entree. I would have ordered the pork belly and scallops instead, but we had a late reservation and it wasn't available anymore. read more
